BR IE F HI ST O RY The name of the province is derived from its earliest inhabitants, the Zamba ls. They worship spirits calle d "anitos", thus they were referred to as "Sambali" from the Malay word samba, meaning "to worship". Th e term was later Hispanic ized to "Zambal".

MORE H IS TO R Y !! The province of Zambales was formally organized in 1572 after its exploration by Don San Juan de Salcedo, and originally included towns of Alaminos, Bolinao San Isidro and other places which now belong to Pangasinan.
