Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday Scripture Reflections

1st Reading

Isaiah 49:3,5-6

The Prophet speaks of the Servant’s prophetical mission, namely to rise up the tribes of Israel, who were downtrodden in Babylonian slavery. The Church replies this poem to Jesus Christ, God’s Servant, whose mission it is to raise up you and me when we are depressed. That is what a friend does for a friend!

2nd Reading 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul sends his greetings to “the church of God that is in Corinth!” We are members of the universal Church, which is realized in our own congregation. We should not be narrow-minded and identify our own congregation with the universal Church.

Gospel

John 1:29-34

Domingo Escritura Reflexions

Primera lectura

Evangelio Juan

1:29-34

This Gospel reading tells us about who the Lord Jesus is and about the process of getting to know him more intimately. Jesus is “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” : Christ, our Passover sacrifice! He is great, greater than John the Baptist himself: He is to baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is God’s chosen one. Do you recognize the Lord as such in your life? Pray that you may see for yourself as John the Baptist did with the help of God.

Pray also that God may help you to recognize the Lord Jesus, to see him as a beautiful person, a friend.

Catholic Relief Services Annual Collection Will be next Sunday January 22, 2017 Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. Founded in 1943, they are an organization of 5,000, working in 91 countries and reaching more than 100 million of the world's poorest people each year with innovative solutions to tough problems like poverty, hunger, drought, disease and emergencies. They work in close partnership with the Catholic Church around the world and local, national and international organizations that share our focus on finding ways to meet immediate needs while empowering communities for the long term. Rebuilding Counts 37% of programming focuses on emergency relief. Once they meet immediate needs for food, water and shelter, they transition to rebuilding and reconstruction, supporting the survivors of natural disasters and chronic emergencies in reclaiming their lives. Innovation Counts. Hunger is the easiest disease to cure. Yet more than 1 billion people—one-seventh of the people on earth—suffer from it. Enough food is produced to feed everyone, but many go hungry because they lack the money to buy it or the land to grow it. We're changing that landscape with 164 sustainable agricultural projects using innovative approaches that combine health care, literacy and microfinance with proven agricultural practices. For 26 million people, hunger is already a thing of the past. Connection Counts Here at home, they carry out the social mission of the Church with 8.5 million Catholics in 14,337 parishes, dioceses and schools through programs such as CRS Rice Bowl, and CRS Fair Trade.
