LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR... Greetings! Welcome to the 2nd Annual Wind Fest at Fresno City College. My name is Elisha Wells, and I’m the Director of Band, Brass & Orchestra here at City College Since my first semester here in Fall 2018, I have wanted to create a concert band festival that would continue the tradition of excellence in band music, established here by so many of my predecessors as FCC Music Faculty. In Spring 2019, we launched the Inaugural Wind Fest at Fresno City College, and it was a complete success! Even though we planned a 2nd Annual event in Spring 2020, we had to cancel it due to Covid19. This event has been postponed for two years, and I’m so excited that it’s back, and we have some eager students ready to perform!! The purpose of the event is to give music students an opportunity to hear other regional bands and receive feedback from professional adjudicators. The educational impact is more valuable than 100 hours of band rehearsal in school. Hearing other professional perspectives about the technical and musical aspects of their playing allows students to reach for higher achievement, and it also reinforces the wonderful teaching that is happening within the classroom. This year’s lineup of adjudicators is a dynamite group of professional band directors from the central valley. We welcome Christine Keenan, Dir. of Bands at Reedley College, Mike Tackett, Dir. of Bands at College of Sequoias, Dr. George Dougherty, Dir. of Bands at Fresno Pacific University, and Paul Lucckesi, Dir. of Jazz Studies at Fresno City College. Each of these adjudicators has extensive and professional training in concert band teaching and conducting, and we are so fortunate to have them here with us today. ADJUDICATORS Dr. George Dougherty Dr. Dougherty is the Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Music at Fresno Pacific University where he conducts the Symphonic Band, coaches chamber ensembles, and provides performance study instruction for brass instruments. He received training from the North Carolina School of the Arts, Piedmont Bible College (PBC) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has performed with the Greensboro and Winston-Salem Symphonies, Arturo Sandoval, Market Street Brass and Stratford Brass (all NC) and has been a substitute with the Des Moines and Cedar Rapids (IA) Symphony Orchestras. Recently, he has regularly performed with the Sequoia Symphony Orchestra in Visalia, CA. George has taught at PBC (11 years) and provided trumpet instruction for Guilford College (NC). For fifteen years he taught at Faith Baptist Bible College of Ankeny, IA, where he directed the instrumental music and music education programs, conducted the FBBC Community Orchestra/Wind Ensemble and coached chamber groups. In 2016 he joined the music department of Simpson College as an adjunct/affiliate Artist Teacher, providing private instruction for the trumpet studio. Dr. Dougherty’s primary performance outlet is with Artisans in Brass, a brass quintet with whom he has recorded two CDs: Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs, and a 2017 release, Just A Little Off the Top. International appearances include the Central African Republic, Slovakia, and Brazil. Dr. D, as his students know him, enjoys arranging music to fit the needs of ensembles under his direction, and has a growing catalog of works that can be found on his website, www.georgedoughterty.com. These include settings for student and church groups, as well as professional level works performed by Artisans in Brass. Dr. Doughterty studied conducting under Joan Winner and David

Kish, trumpet with Karl Kassner, Ray Mase, and Ed Bach, music education with Randy Kohlenberg, church music with Jack Alexander, composition with Eddie Bass, and chamber music with Ed Bach, and received additional mentorship in chamber music and music business from Robert Nagel. His degrees are from Piedmont Bible College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with additional study at North Carolina School of the Arts. George has served three churches as Minister of Music, and enjoys presenting sacred concerts as requested. He is certified in the Kodaly methodology, levels I and II, has adjudicated for a number of fine arts festivals in the Midwest and Northeast, and been the featured clinician for Seminario Batista’s Music Conference in Crato, Ceara, Brazil. Other international appearances have included Kezmarok, Slovakia, and Bangui, Central African Republic.

Christine Keenan Christine Keenan is the Director of Bands and Program Director for the Music Department at Fresno Pacific University, where she conducts the Symphonic Band and coaches the Saxophone Quartet. She also teaches courses in music education and is a supervisor and mentor for music credential students with the School of Education. Mrs. Keenan is a co-conductor of the Wind Symphony of Clovis and the founder/ conductor of Summer Band at the Shaghoian. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Master of Arts in Instrumental Conducting at California State University, Fresno and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Music Education through Boston University. Mrs. Keenan lives in Clovis with her husband Vince, and their two daughters, Vivian (7) and Roxanne (5).

Paul Lucckesi Paul Lucckesi is the Director of Jazz Studies at Fresno City College. At Fresno City College, Paul runs the Fresno City College Jazz Ensemble, the City Jazz Festival, and the music faculty teaching woodwinds. Paul has a degree in music education from CSU, Fresno, and a Master of Music Education from Central Washington University. He previously served as the Director of Jazz Studies at the Buchanan Educational Center in Clovis, California. Under his direction, the Buchanan Jazz Band ‘A’ received awards from the Downbeat Student Music Awards in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014. The band also performed at the 50th, 51st, 57th, and 60th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival. Paul taught on the Monterey Jazz Festival Education Program staff, where he directed the County All-Star Middle School and High Schools Jazz Ensembles. He previously served as a director of the La Sierra Music Camp. Having presented clinics at California All-State Music Educators Conference and festivals throughout the state, Paul is an active jazz adjudicator/clinician throughout the Western United States. Including serving as the director of honor groups for FMCMEA, Monterey, and TKMEA, in February 2014, Paul was the director of the inaugural California All-State Middle School Jazz Band. He returned to direct the first (and hopefully last) virtual California All-State Middle School Jazz Band in 2021. He was the recipient of the 2013 Jazz Educator of the Year for California, now titled the Paul Shaghoian Jazz Educator of the Year Award.

Michael Tackett is a Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Music at College of the Sequoias, Visalia, CA. Michael earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music. In 2002 he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra/Opera Theatre and the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his tenure at College of the Sequoias he served as Director of Band/Orchestral and Musical Theatre Activities at El Diamante High School in Visalia. Michael has served fourteen years as conductor for the College of the Sequoias Music Theatre Program and sixteen years for the Tulare County Office of Education Musical Program. He has currently conducted and/ or directed over fifty musical productions for a variety of theatre companies. He has been a guest conductor with The Tulare County Symphony Orchestra, The Citrus Wind Ensemble, The TKMEA Honor Orchestra and Band, and The Fresno-Madera Counties Music Educators Association Honor Orchestra. He currently sits on the CBDA board as CASMEC Exhibit Host. Michael has been awarded a Certificate of Merit from the National Band Association (2007), was named Tulare/Kings County Band Educator of the year (2008), Orchestra Educator (2011), and Teacher of the Year for Visalia Unified School District in 2013. Michael is a member of The California Music Education Association, the National Association for Music Education, and The College Band Directors National Association. Michael loves his job and feels blessed to work with such wonderful students.

About the festival director Elisha Wells Elisha K. Wells is the Director of Band, Brass and Orchestra at Fresno City College. Prior to serving at FCC, Elisha was a Horn Instructor and Lecturer at Sacramento State, Stanislaus State, Delta College, College of Sequoias (Visalia & Hanford), Conductor of the Visalia Opera Company, and has been Horn Faculty at Cazadero Music Camp since 2015. Ms. Wells currently serves as Principal Horn in Sequoia Symphony, Wind Symphony of Clovis, and regularly performs with the Fresno Philharmonic, having served as Acting Principal Horn. Elisha studied at Chapman University in Orange, CA, University of Houston in Houston, TX, and Fresno City College briefly. However, her formal studies include a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts with an emphasis in Horn Performance from California State University, Fresno. Elisha is an active faculty member at Fresno City College, and is a patron, supporter, educator and adjudicator within the music community. She is currently 1st Vice President of CMEA Central Section, Past President of Friends of the Arts at FCC, and serves on the Sequoia Symphony Board. Elisha regularly adjudicates Solo and Ensemble festivals regionally and state-wide, All-State & Regional Honor Band auditions, and presents clinics on Best Practices for Horn Players and Teaching Horn for Band Directors. She is a current member of the Local 12 Musicians Union, NAfME, and the International Horn Society, and maintains an active teaching studio called the Happy Horn Studio, with students from Visalia, Fresno, Clovis, Modesto, Sacramento and coastal areas. For the past decade, her horn students have earned All-State and Regional Honor Band chairs annually, as well as full scholarships to the Kendall-Betts Horn Camp, Cazadero Music Camp, Sequoia Lake Music Camp, National Symphony Youth Fellowship, Interlochen Summer Arts Academy, Tanglewood Summer Institute, NAfME All-National Honor Ensemble, and local citizenship awards for

contribution to the arts. Her professional conducting career began in 2012, conducting Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Bizet’s Carmen, and an original Mariachi Opera with Visalia Opera Company. In the summer of 2014, she conducted a professionally-cast production of Les Miserable with the League of Christian Actors in Visalia, CA. Since then, Elisha has conducted junior high, high school community college, and university bands in California, and has adjudicated wind ensemble festivals in the Central Valley and Bay Area. Ms. Wells has been invited to be the Guest Conductor for Cazadero Music Camp High School sessions, the TKMEA and SCMEA Junior High Honor Bands, as well as the 2022 FMCMEA High School Honor Band. Elisha has been an active horn soloist for almost 20 years. Earlier in her career, Elisha performed as a horn soloist and dancer in the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, “Blast!”, traveling around the United States and performing in large venues for 2 years . She also competed with a group called The Edge for the nationally televised show called America’s Got Talent in New York. Ms. Wells has performed in Australia, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, and continually performs solos throughout the west coast with groups including Sequoia Symphony, Kingsburg Community Band, Stanislaus Community Band, and the Wind Symphony of Clovis. Additionally, she has played in accompanying orchestras for world-renown artists such as Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Renée Fleming, Andrea Bocelli, Jackie Evancho, Branford Marsalis, Juan Diego Florez, Sarah Chang, Jon Nakamatsu, Airborne Toxic Event, and Mannheim Steamroller. Elisha is also a noted Artist and Endorser of Robinson’s Remedies-Lip Renew. Ms. Wells feels fortunate to have studied with world-class hornists such as Brian Drake (LA Phil), Nancy Goodearl (Houston Symphony), Dr. Tom Hiebert (Fresno State), and David Krehbiel (formerly, San Francisco Symphony). In Summer 2022, Elisha will be a Guest Conductor and will perform as a Horn Soloist in the Larry Sutherland-Fresno State Alumni Wind Ensemble for the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference in the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany during July 2022. In August, she will be conducting at La Honda Music Camp, and soon after, she plans to also begin her Doctoral Studies in Music Education with Boston University in Fall 2022. But for now, she is enjoying life as an actively performing musician and educator with her supportive and loving partner, Cody Forcier.
