Bishop-elect Izen was born January 12, 1967 to John and JoAnna Izen. He is the youngest of their six children. He grew up in Fairmont (in the Diocese of Winona-Rochester), attended St. John Vianney grade school and Fairmont High School, graduating in 1985. Father Izen has a sister, Ann Wehner and brother Tom Izen, living in Fairmont and two sisters and one brother in the Twin Cities area. Bishop-elect Izen is currently the pastor of the Churches of Saint Michael and Saint Mary in Stillwater, the parochial administrator of the Church of St. Charles in Bayport and the canonical administrator of Saint Croix Catholic school. A native of Fairmont, Minnesota, Bishop-elect Izen, 55, earned an un-dergraduate degree in mathematics and computer science from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and upon graduation, went to work for 3M as a systems analyst. During his nine years at 3M, it became clearer that God was calling him to discern a possible vocation to the priesthood, so he en-rolled at The Saint Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning a Masters of Divinity. Bishop-elect Izen was ordained to the priesthood May 28, 2005, by Archbishop Harry J. Flynn. Fifteen men were ordained to the priesthood that day, one of the largest ordination classes in decades. Following ordination, then-Father Izen ministered at Divine Mercy in Faribault until 2007, when he became pastor at Saint Timothy in Maple Lake, where he served until 2012. In February of 2012, he became pastor at Saint Raphael in Crystal, where he served until 2015 when he was assigned to Stillwater. As an auxiliary bishop, Bishop-elect Izen will work alongside Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Williams, to lead the Church in the 12-county metro area. “I was surprised, humbled, and a little terrified when I received the call from the Apostolic Nuncio informing me that Pope Francis had appointed me as an auxiliary bishop,” Bishop-elect Izen said. “Archbishop Hebda has been very supportive and reassuring since I first received the news – very fatherly. I look forward to being an extension of him to our Archdiocese, and serving and being present to the people of God.” Archbishop Hebda said: “It is with deep gratitude to Pope Francis and Christmas joy that I welcome the wonderful news of the appointment of Bishop-elect Michael Izen as an auxiliary bishop of this Archdiocese. The priests and faithful of the Archdiocese should be honored that once again the Holy Father has chosen a priest of this local Church to serve as a successor of the apostles. I have come to know Bishop-elect Izen as a generous and capable pastor with a great love for Christ and for his sheep. I have particularly admired his ability to collaborate effectively with brother priests, Religious Sisters, and lay leader-ship in advancing the work of the Church. His impressive natural gifts all suggest that the Lord has long been preparing him to serve as a bishop. I am confi-dent that the Archdiocese will benefit greatly from his leadership and experience and I personally look forward to working with him more closely as he be-gins this new ministry. Please join me in both congratulating Bishop-elect Izen and offering him our prayers as he prepares for his upcoming ordination.” His episcopal ordination is scheduled for April 11, 2023, at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The ordination will be live-streamed on the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis’ Facebook page. Please see The Catholic Spirit for more information on Bishop-elect Izen’s appointment and see the Archdiocese’s event page for additional information on his episcopal ordination. We survived 2022 and can now look forward to a new year, a new start, and a new attitude. Many of you started this year with new resolutions. Good for you! We at Burtis Chiropractic applaud that attitude and would like to help you achieve success in that arena like never before. So much of health is based on your decisions about your lifestyle. Sleep is huge, as are diet and exercise. These were easy topics to ace 100 years ago, as sleep deprivation was not an issue and seed oil, high fructose corn syrup, and sugar in everything was not as common. In addition, for most of us, our jobs were enough of a workout that gyms were practically non-existent. Boy, have things changed. Being healthy these days requires near-constant vigilance. You really have to watch what you eat. Many people are good at reading food labels and understanding the good and bad stuff that is in almost all of our food. Gluten and dairy sensitivities are much more well-known. More and more often, healthcare practitioners are advising their patients to change Putting the U back in Resol-U-tion Dr. Scott Burtis, M.S., D.C., Burtis Chiropractic Center Guest Columnist their diet and lifestyle before turning to drugs, but it is a slow process. In fact, if your own doctor has suggested medication before diet and exercise, I’d urge you to ask them why! The challenging thing is that almost all of us know what to do, we just don’t do it. Exercising three or more times a week for a half hour or more. Cutting out sugar, processed food, seed oils, and high fructose corn syrup is not easy, but it is doable. Look to my functional medicine patients who used to have type 2 diabetes as an example of how it is, indeed, possible. Getting more high-quality sleep can be as simple as turning your TV off an hour earlier or avoiding scrolling through your phone right before bed. Getting back to health practices like seeing your chiropractor on a regular basis to clear stress out of your system is also important. As a functional medicine practitioner, I have seen the difference these choices can make. Thankfully there are many vitamins and supplements that can make the change easier. However, there are not a lot of blanket recommendations I give, as functional medicine is a personalized style of health care. Transformation occurs on an individual basis. Knowing your individual weak spots helps me determine the right supplement, timing, and dose for each person. In many cases, supplements are a temporary assist to accelerate the transformation. Sometimes, in cases of mutations or epigenetic issues, the prescription is a permanent one. Again, the operative word we use in functional medicine is “personalized.” One of the more popular resolutions people make is to return to the gym. Unfortunately, this is often a short-lived commitment. This year, Cutting Edge Fitness in Fairmont is helping to make this a little easier to help you financially commit to that change. They are offering a buy one, get one free offer on their body composition test if you mention Burtis Chiropractic! Before you start your new workout routine, go get your body composition tested. In addition to weight, you will know your body fat percentage, fat-free mass, BMI, intracellular and extracellular water content, and even know where in your body you are retaining water and fat. After a month of working out, get this same test done again to check your improvements. When you mention Burtis Chiropractic, you will get this second test at no cost! You don’t have to be a member at Cutting Edge to take advantage of this test, but I do recommend it—I am a member there. Why is this test important? Because sometimes when starting a workout program, you may only lose five pounds, but you may actually have lost 10 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of muscle, which will be easier to tell through this test. The reinforcement of knowing you are doing well is sometimes enough to keep you going. Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions! Health transformation can be yours. Sometimes you need the right guide, and sometimes you need the reinforcement of knowing that what you are doing is working. Both of those just got easier; let us help you. Messages of Sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.kramerfuneralhome.com Doreen F. Rabbe, 92 Wilhelmine Janssen, age 97, of Granada, MN passed away Friday, January 6, 2023, at her home. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements. Wilhelmine Charlotte (Kruse) Janssen was born on March 27, 1925, to Robert and Wilhelmine "Minnie" (Mayland) Kruse on a farmstead near Buffalo Center, IA. She received her education from the Center German Township country school near Titonka, IA. On June 11, 1947, Wilhelmine was united in marriage to Ernest A. Janssen at Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka, IA. They farmed in the Buffalo Center area before moving to their farm near Granada in 1961. Wilhelmine kept busy as a housewife raising her children. She taught us all the basic skills of how to clean house, make beds, cook, wash, fold and iron clothes, etc. We reluctantly did these chores at the time. Not until after we were out of the house, starting our own families did we begin to fully appreciate that a clean and organized home helps create a little peace, and harmony in the chaotic world around us. The role of a full-time Mom is exhausting, and somehow she did an amazing and wonderful job. When she asked us to do our chores, she meant it. She was firm, but firm with love. We again learned a lesson in boundaries, and following rules is an important life lesson as an adult, a lesson to pass on. Wilhelmine Janssen, 97 Wilhelmine enjoyed listening to music, reading, baking, watching old classic TV shows, having coffee with friends and neighbors and most of all loved her family and was always interested in what they were doing. She had a sense of humor and a good laugh. As young kids, we would occasionally overhear her conversations with friends and family. We would hear the laughter, finding humor in situations that may not have seemed funny at the time, but laughed about them later. We learned that life was not always to be taken too seriously. Wilhelmine was baptized and confirmed in the Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka, IA., and was a member of the Congregational Church of Granada. Her deep faith stayed with her throughout her life. She, also, belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in Granada, the Square Dance Club, and Mayflower Circle. She leaves all of us behind with fond memories. She was a strong woman, loving wife, and mother who cared more about others than herself. She will be missed, but her love and life lessons will live on with each of us forever. Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Allen (Brenda) Janssen of Pensacola, FL and Bruce Janssen of Pensacola, FL; two daughters, Sharon (Darrell "Dean") Bloome of Lakefield, MN and Darlene (Dennis) Hilpipre of Blue Earth, MN; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-greatgrandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Arlene Kruse, Ed (Lori) Janssen, Art Janssen, Marcy James and Glen (Arlys) Wittmus; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Arnold Janssen; grandson, Eric Janssen; two brothers Willie Kruse and Raymond Kruse; sister, Katherine (Kruse) Meinders; sister-in-law, Caroline Kruse, and brother-in-law, Dick Meinders. www.lakeviewfuneralhome.net Berniece “Bea” E. A bride’s walk down the aisle, a married couple’s first dance together Tips when toasting the happy couple and, of course, the moment couples say “I do” are just a few of the many memorable moments to take place during a wedding. Another memorable moment, and one that couples have little to no control over, is the wedding toast. Toasting is a tradition that some historians trace to ancient Greece, which should give nervous toastersto-be a little more confidence as the wedding day approaches. After all, given the lengthy history of toasting, it’s likely that millions of people have toasted happy couples over the years. If millions of others can do it, then so can this year’s crop of best men, maids of honor and proud parents who will be asked to raise a glass to happy couples. As a couple’s big day draws near, those trusted with toasting the newlyweds can consider these tips. • Introduce yourself. Unless it’s a very intimate affair with only a handful of well-acquainted guests, introduce yourself before beginning your toast. This not only ensures everyone recognizes who you are, but also provides a simple way to begin your comments without feeling a need to impress. • Keep things lighthearted. Though it’s best to avoid being too informal, a lighthearted toast with a funny anecdote and/or a joke or two can help to maintain the jovial vibe of the reception. • Explain your relationship. Maids of honor and best men are often chosen because they have a special relationship with the bride or groom. So it’s alright to give a brief explanation of that relationship and explain how much it means to you during the toast. • Toast the couple. Even though most people toasting at a wedding have a special connection with just one half of the newly married couple, it’s normal to toast the new couple and their happiness before closing your remarks. If you want to toast each person when delivering your remarks, speak to your counterpart (i.e., a maid of honor if you’re the best man, or vice versa) for some special insight. • Keep your toast short. Toasts need not be lengthy. In fact, toasts should be on the shorter side so everyone tasked with delivering a toast can do so in a reasonable amount of time. • Avoid winging it. Plan your remarks ahead of time, even writing down your toast or at least organizing your ideas before you’re handed the microphone. Winging it might seem like an option, but if you speak off-the-cuff you’ll likely find yourself rambling and going off course. Planning also allows time to practice your remarks before the big day, which also can help to calm your nerves. • Remember you’re among friends. If need be, remind yourself before your toast that you’re among friends. Speaking to a room full of people you know or are at least familiar with should help you avoid the nervousness that can come with speaking to a room filled with strangers. Toasts are a beloved wedding tradition. People tasked with toasting the happy couple can follow some simple strategies to stay calm and deliver remarks couples will remember forever. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 2023 PHOTO PRESS | FAIRMONT, MINNESOTA PAGE 7 Wedding planning is a unique experience unlike any endeavor most couples will ever encounter. Much effort goes into planning a wedding, and that includes building a budget that ensures the big day will be fun without breaking the bank. Most couples planning a wedding have never tied the knot before, so it can be difficult to determine a reasonable amount to spend. It’s easy to go overboard when planning a wedding, and couples may find their list of wants and, consequently, their expenses, growing as they get into the weeds of wedding planning. Though it might require some difficult decisions, couples can keep these tips in mind so How to build a wedding budget without breaking the bank they can build a wedding budget that won’t land them in debt after saying, “I do.” • Determine funding. The days when a bride’s parents would finance the wedding entirely on their own are largely a thing of the past. According to a recent WeddingWire Newlywed Report, parents now pay for 52 percent of wedding expenses. As couples begin establishing a wedding budget, it’s imperative that they first determine who, if anyone, will be helping them finance the big day. Fiftytwo percent of wedding expenses is a significant amount of money, but in that scenario, couples will still need to come up with roughly half of the money needed to fund their weddings. Couples without substantial savings may be forced to cut back in order to avoid beginning their life as a married couple in debt. • Make a list of potential expenses. Location will be a significant factor when determining potential expenses. Call Us for Hall Rental After a formal wedding ceremony, complete with processionals and “I dos,” comes the part of a wedding that enables the happy couple to brush off the last vestiges of jitters and celebrate. A wedding reception marks the culmination of How to curate your reception playlist months or even years of planning. Oftentimes a hundred guests or more gather to dine, dance and toast to the prosperity of the newlyweds. Certain components of a reception will prove more memorable than others. Food is one such element. The other component that tends to make a lasting impression is the music, which means couples curating reception playlists should do so with care and consideration. Deejays and live bands can help couples choose music that fits the mood. But couples also can consider these tips when curating their reception playlists. •Calculate your needs. Couples may wonder just how many songs they need for a standard reception. Unless you’re working with extra-long songs, like “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” or “Bohemian Rhapsody,” most songs are around three minutes long. That means for a four-hour reception you’ll need roughly 80 songs. However, plan for moments such as speeches/toasts and other breaks. • Pair songs with key elements. Traditional weddings have certain mini-events within the receptions. Music enhances these moments. Jot down ideas for the following components: - Bridal party entrance - Couples’ entrance - First dance (wedding song) - Mother/son, father/ daughter dances - Cake cutting song - Garter/bouquet toss songs - Spotlight dance - Any other special element • Select calm dinner music. After a day rushing around, most guests are looking forward to sitting down, conversing and, of course, eating. Cocktail hour and dinner music should be at a low volume and not too fast-paced. It certainly shouldn’t drown out conversation. Musician Peter Lee Johnson performs violin covers of popular Top 40 songs, and his music may be an option when choosing songs to accompany food service. Postmodern Jukebox is a group of musicians who take modern songs and give them a bygone flair. Their tunes also can be fitting. • Tie the music to the theme. Weddings that follow a specific theme, such as a beach wedding, can be enhanced by music that coordinates to that theme. Think steel drum bands, Hawaiian stylings or even Beach Boys surfing songs. • Be mindful of older guests. Some seniors may appreciate modern music, but they also may want to hear songs from the era when they were growing up. Pepper the song list with options across various decades to keep as many people on the dance floor as possible. Article provided by Metro Creative Graphics, Inc. MARGARET ST. • FAIRMONT, MN • 238-1885 pawprints.petfinder.com Email: [email protected] Dogs: Neelah is a black Great Dane mix. This big girl is about 11 months old and full of energy. Neelah does well with other dogs. She is good with people but would probably be best in a home without easily breakable little children. Echo is a young yellow lab mix adult. She is a happy girl with energy and enthusiasm. Echo loves people and has a sweet personality. Cats: Gretchen might be confused with a Holstein cow, except that she only weighs about 6 pounds and meows instead of moos. Her white fur with black patches is distinctive and her sweet personality is hard to beat. Maddie has medium length hair and is gray tabby with white. Her fur is very soft which matches her personality. We think she is about 10-12 months old. BOGO on all felines. Adopt one cat for $120 and get the second cat free. All of our cats and dogs are spayed or neutered, have distemper and rabies vaccinations (if old enough). They also are dewormed and treated for fleas. Dogs have been tested for heartworm and cats for feline leukemia. Thank you to all the people who made our Holiday Bake Sale and Give to the Max campaign successes.
