While some go through plastic surgery as a shortcut to getting a perfect figure, more people have recently engaged in working out by doing plank exercise. Unlike plastic surgery, which usually costs an arm and a leg, performing planks requires 1 your own body and a soft mat if necessary. There is no need to go to a gym because you can do it 2 anywhere at any time. Planks can be part of your whole set of workout plans or simply a form of exercise that takes less than half an hour before bedtime. You do not have to be a professional 3 to do plank exercise. As long as you wish to make your muscles stronger or to 4 your back pain, planks done from different positions can surely help you achieve your goal. There are several ways to do plank exercise, 5 what muscles you would like to train or how intense you would like it to be. To do the basic plank, simply start from a pushup position, and 6 bend your elbows and extend your legs. That would make your whole body, from the torso to the ankles, 7 a straight line. Tighten the abdominal muscles and hold for 50 seconds or so. Be sure to use your forearms to support the weight of your body 8 put the body weight on your hands. To give yourself a further 9 , you may make it a side plank by rotating 90 degrees to the side. You can also increase the intensity by 0 one of your limbs. Once you get into the habit of doing planks, a figure with a f lat tummy and strong muscles will no longer be just a dream.

Over the past decades, the AIDS virus has deeply troubled the world. Many biologists believe that the virus came from monkeys, infecting the first humans sometime during the first half of the 20th century. 1 However, a new study might provide the answer to this question.

9

10

Scientists in this study claim that the spread of the virus is likely to have started from a bloodsucking insect called the stable f ly. It scraped the skin of the victim and sucked up some blood. Then, it f lew to the next victim, where it spit out some of the blood. It is very likely that a stable f ly bit an infected monkey, then bit a human, infecting the human. 2 The stable f ly is unique among blood sucking insects because not many pose as high a risk of spreading viruses. 3 This way, no blood is exchanged from one bitten animal to another. They also spit out the blood again, but they usually digest the blood first, killing most viruses. 4 This means that the viruses can survive in the stable f ly until it is passed on to another being. A Today, there is still no knowing how it was spread. B In contrast, the stable f ly keeps blood undigested in its stomach. C Then, the virus could have been spread from human to human through sexual contact. D The most common way to know whether a person has the AIDS virus is blood tests. E Other insects, such as mosquitoes, inject poisons through one tube and suck blood through a separate one. 1

As toddlers begin to explore the world, most Asian parents seldom let them get near anything dangerous. They take many things away, such as scissors and knives because they worry that their children might hurt themselves. In contrast, some Western parents allow their children to try their hand at everything freely. They view bumps and cuts as part of the process of growing up. A famous British survival expert, Bear Grylls, urges that instead of teaching kids to avoid anything dangerous, we should teach them how to play with it safely. He even suggests that some basic survival skills like making a fire and using a penknife should be included in the lessons at school. Grylls’ idea is supported by an expert on child health, Jan Murray, who points out that parents should not over-protect their kids; on the contrary, they should allow them to develop independence and various skills. She says that trial and error is the main way for children to learn, and by taking risks, they understand the outcomes of their behavior. But most parents take away children’s freedom to cross the road or walk to school alone. It’s a pity that parents’ own concept or cultural expectations stop their children from taking adventures. “An adventure means a bold journey or action with uncertain outcomes. But by taking this adventurous ride, we gain great experiences,” explains Phil Harrison from Scouts Australia. “So, stop hesitating, parents. Take your kids to cook on an open fire, sleep under the stars, climb a tree or go canoeing. In this way, they are sure to have a wonderful childhood.” ( )1 What is the main idea of this passage? A Asian parents always overprotect kids while Western parents do not do so. B Safety is always the main concern when children play games. C Allowing children to take risks helps them learn more. D Children are more likely to play with dangerous things than adults. ( )2 What does Bear Grylls expect to happen at school? A Teachers offer survival kits for all children. B Children are taught how to stay alive in the woods. C Teachers introduce children to common creatures living in the wild. D Children practice fighting skills in order to survive.

D Most children do not realize something is dangerous until they touch it. ( )4 According to the passage, what does the author encourage parents to do? A To create a natural wild place for children at home. B To teach children how to appreciate the beauty of nature. C To take children to seek excitement in adventures.

As all the baseball players fixed their eyes on the pitcher, they looked completely focused. They all hoped to stand out in this tryout and be chosen to play in the World Cup. Sadly, no matter how well they performed, they could hardly receive any attention from the media simply because they were women baseball players. Women playing baseball are usually discriminated against. General people believe what girls or women should play is softball, which is considered safer and better for ladies. A.G. Spalding, the founder of a famous sports goods company, who made baseball popular, even announced in 1911 that baseball should be all-male, for women were not strong enough to play the game. Yet, the origin of women baseball can be traced back to the 1830s, when women played in baseball clubs, on amateur teams and at schools. In 1931, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were stricken out by a 17-year-old girl, Jackie Mitchell in a warmup match. Many female baseball players had great performance, such as Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, who pitched among male players for a couple of seasons. Women’s teams formed and attracted greater attention during World War II. However, in 1952, Major League Baseball stopped women from signing contracts with baseball teams. They said that women’s bones were weaker than men’s and that female baseball players ran a higher risk of getting breast cancer because their chests often got hit and neither of them was convincing. Female baseball players continue to be neglected, which is nothing but a result of sexism. ( )1 What is this passage mainly about? A The historical development of female baseball. B Great women baseball players in Major League Baseball. C How women master baseball skills to become professional players. D The unfair attitude people take toward female baseball players. ( )2 Which of the following is most likely to be the special feature in the sports section of the newspapers during World War II? A The picture of girl baseball players. B The interview of male softball players. C The announcement of banning women’s baseball. D The analysis of softball games.

There is no doubt that the lion, often called “the king of the jungle,” is one of the most powerful animals in the world. Far from what the name “jungle” suggests, however, most lions live on the grasslands on the plains of East Africa. The only lions that can be found to live in a jungle habitat are those in the Gir Forest National Park in western India. In Africa, lions use the long grass on the plain to hide themselves in when they are hunting their prey, which includes other large animals like zebras, giraffes, buffalos and wildebeests. They usually hunt for food at night. In a group with around 10-15 members, it is the females that are responsible for up to ninety percent of the hunting. A male lion typically protects the pride and looks after its territory. Lions are amazing hunters. They can run at up to 80 kilometers per hour over short distances. They have to do a lot of hunting, as a female lion needs 5 kg of meat a day, and a male lion needs at least 7 kg. An adult male lion can make very loud sound. Its roar can be heard even 8 kilometers away. Both males and females live for an average of 12 years in the wild. Few live longer than 16 years. In zoos, they can live around 25 years. ( )1 What is the best title for the passage? A The Lion, an Amazing Runner B The Lion, an Amazing Star of the Zoo C The Lion, an Amazing Animal on the Plain D The Lion, an Amazing Hunter in the Jungle 2 Fill in the blanks in the chart with the key words from the passage. Basic Facts About Lions They are often called “the king of the jungle.” Their habitats are mostly grasslands on the plains. The only exception is those living in , found in a national park in India. Their life span is generally years, both females and males, with the longest being years. Zoo lions can live up to 25 years. Each group usually has 10-15 members. Their speed is per hour, and they eat up to 5-7 kg of meat daily.

4 wish to+VR=hope to+VR「希望做某事」,所以本題應填一原形動詞,故選C ease。

A 1830 B 1911 C 1931 D 1952 (根據本文第二段倒數第三句。)
