This is indicated by the following circular symbol on our balls. Special conditions require special features. Training? Floodlight? Kids? Indoor? Competition ball? Certain conditions require paying special attention to certain ball characteristics. They affect the weight, colour or surface texture of the ball. These special characteristics for some balls are outlined in the actual product descriptions.

Some might say a football is a football. We don’t. We know that there can’t be one ball that suits all playing conditions. And we set out to find those other ball designs. Over the years, we have developed three patented ball constructions. Each one of them is unique. The choice of which one is best suited for your team is up to you. „Un balón de fútbol es un balón de fútbol.“ Nosotros no compartimos esa postura y mediante nuestras novedosas construcciones de balones tratamos de perfeccionar constantemente todas las características que nosotros consideramos esenciales. Our classic. Tri cONcepT.

This ball construction comes closest to the standard football design. We start by closely tuning the width and weight of the individual panels order to get the highest level of ball stability possible. Obviously, when developing a new idea for ball construction, one has to address the issue of abrasion resistance. Now after 20 years of success with TRI CONCEPT, we can in all modesty say that professional clubs continue see TRI CONCEPT as a viable option. All TRI CONCEPT models distinguish themselves with their classic white-background look.

pT 5. A different kind of football.

For this ball construction we sought above all else to reduce the number of stitches. Why? Fewer stitches means less water absorption. The result was PT 5, a ball made of only 5 panels, which, thanks to a revolutionary layout, provide exceptional shape retention. What other benefits are there to a reduced number of seams? It helps reduce abrasion wear to a minimum, since this is often most pronounced at the edges of panels. PT 5 construction. The other professional option.

This unique ball structure, which has been adopted by top teams in professional leagues around the world, gives the ball exciting play characteristics. This 13-panel ball structure also features a lower stitch count and therefore guarantees high shape retention and roundness. This ball construction also helps minimize water infiltration and abrasion wear.

SCS stands for Standard Chamber System The ball bladder is made out of high-performance natural latex. Air loss is significantly reduced – less than 10% over 72 hours. SCS guarantees high flight stability and ensures good play and bounce characteristics. SCS is an outstanding choice for standard balls. It ensures an even lower rate of air loss – under 7% over 72 hours - and features an even better flight stability. It provides great play and bounce characteristics. ACS is a good choice in the middle of the price range. ACS significa Advanced Chamber System (= sistema de cámara avanzado). Cámara de aire fabricada de látex natural de gran calidad. Garantiza una pérdida de aire aún más baja –menos de 7% en 72 hrs.-. Y garantiza una elevada estabilidad de vuelo. Además garantiza un buen rebote y buen comportamiento durante el juego. DMC stands for Dynamic Multi Chamber System. We have got a patent on this bladder design. It is made out of high-performance thermo polyurethane (TPU) and contains 4 different chambers that are connected inside the bladder via two perforated partitions made out of TPU film. What does this mean concretely? Incredible shape retention and fantastic play and flight characteristics that are further enhanced by a built-in counterweight opposite the valve. Its compact multi-layer bladder skin brings air loss down to phenomenally low rates of less than 3% over 72 hours. In other words: The choice for demanding professionals. DMC significa Dynamic Multi Chamber System (= sistema dinámico de cámaras múltiples). Esta cámara de aire para balones fue patentada por uhlsport. 7. STABiLiTY OF SHApe ANd SiZe (only required for the FIFA APPROVED seal) A ball of the highest quality grade must retain the initial characteristics after a period of usage. After shooting the ball against a steel plate 2000 times at 50 km/h, the seams and the air valve are inspected, along with a repeat measurement of pressure loss, circumference and spherical stability. The specified values only apply to balls of size 5.

1. SiZe

1. CIRCUNFERENCIA

The size of a ball must be constant for it to react to the gentlest touches, during dribbling for example, and for the ball to break into the right direction. In this test, the circumference of the ball is measured at 16 different spots at an air pressure of 0.8 bar. The permissible results must meet the ranges of 685 – 695 mm (FIFA APPROVED) or rather 680 – 700 mm (FIFA INSPECTED), depending on the seal.

La circunferencia de un balón debe permanecer constante para que pueda responder incluso a los toques más suaves, como los propios de los driblajes, y siga la dirección deseada por el jugador. En esta prueba se procede a medir la circunferencia del balón en 16 puntos diferentes con una presión de 0,7 bar. Los valores permitidos dependen del sello de calidad y oscilan entre los 685–695 mm del FIFA APPROVED y los 680–700 mm del FIFA INSPECTED.

2. SpHericAL SHApe

La redondez de un balón es determinante para el juego con efecto. Una curva de vuelo óptima solo puede garantizarse si el balón presenta una esferidad perfecta. De nuevo, aquí también se realiza la prueba en 16 puntos distintos. Se determina el diámetro y la diferencia entre los diámetros mayores y menores no puede superar el 1,5 %, en el caso del distintivo FIFA APPROVED, y el 2 %, en el del FIFA INSPECTED.

The spherical shape of a ball is very important when cutting the ball. An optimal flight curve is only guaranteed, if the ball is perfectly spherical. Again, the ball is measured at 16 spots. This time, the diameter is determined, and the difference between the widest and the narrowest diameter must not exceed 1.5% in the case of the FIFA APPROVED seal, and 2% in the case of the FIFA INSPECTED seal.

3. WeiGHT The weight of a ball must also be calibrated precisely to minimise variations in the trajectory and height of ball flight. Otherwise, the player may not be able to aim a header towards the goal or a team-mate with sufficient precision. To determine the exact weight of a ball, it is weighed three times inside of a sealed enclosure at an air pressure of 0.7 bar. The prescribed weight is set at 420 – 445 g (FIFA APPROVED) or rather 410 – 450 g (FIFA INSPECTED).

4. LOSS OF preSSure It is maddening to any athlete when the flight dynamics of the ball change due to pressure loss in the course of the game, so that the force employed must be readjusted for every single shot. For this reason, there is a further test, where the air pressure is measured twice in a period of 72 hours for comparison. In this case, the loss of pressure must not exceed 20% for the FIFA APPROVED seal, or 25% for the FIFA INSPECTED seal.

5. reBOuNd Receiving a ball successfully is an important part of any football match. If this fails, the ball is often lost already. It is much easier to bring a bouncing ball under control if the player is able to estimate the ball‘s rebound characteristics. For this reason, this property must also be tested and calibrated. During the testing procedure, a ball is dropped onto a steel platform ten times from a height of 2 metres to determine the rebound height. FIFA APPROVED balls must rebound to a height of 125 to 155 cm, FIFA INSPECTED balls must bounce to between 115 and 155 cm.

6. WATer ABSOrpTiON Wet balls become heavier and slower, and are much harder to cut than dry balls. A good reason to prevent the soaking of the ball. For this test, a ball is pressed into a water-filled receptacle 250 times, and spun around inside it. The ball is measured before and after this procedure. The maximum deviation from the initial weight after the test must not exceed 15% (FIFA APPROVED) or rather 20% (FIFA INSPECTED).

En caso contrario, el jugador será incapaz de dirigir correctamente el desplazamiento del balón en un cabeceo a puerta o a un compañero. Para establecer el peso exacto de un balón se le pesa tres veces en un contenedor cerrado bajo una presión de 0,7 bar. El peso prescrito oscila entre 420-445 g (FIFA APPROVED) y 410–450 g (FIFA INSPECTED).

4. PÉRDIDA DE PRESIÓN No hay jugador que soporte de buen grado el inconveniente de que su balón pierda sus características de vuelo durante un partido debido a la pérdida de presión, y que haya que ajustarlo de nuevo para cada ocasión. Por ese motivo, existe una prueba adicional en la que se mide y compara la presión del aire del balón dos veces con un intervalo de diferencia de 72 horas. En este caso, la pérdida de presión no puede superar el 20 % como máximo (FIFA APPROVED) o el 25 % (FIFA INSPECTED).

5. REBOTE Sin duda, la correcta recepción del balón es un aspecto básico del fútbol. Si ese factor no está garantizado, la posesión del balón puede darse por perdida. El control de un balón en pleno bote se logra mejor cuando el jugador puede calibrar precisamente las características de bote del mismo. En uhlsport somos conscientes de ese desafío y por ello hemos analizado y calibrado las características de bote de nuestros balones. En la prueba se deja caer el balón 10 veces desde una altura de 2 m sobre una plancha de metal, y se mide la altura del bote. En el sello FIFA APPROVED, el bote del balón tiene que oscilar entre 125-155 cm, en el del FIFA INSPECTED entre 115-155 cm.

6. ABSORCIÓN DE AGUA Cualquier balón húmedo se vuelve inevitablemente más pesado y torpe y entorpece con ello el juego con efecto. Motivo suficiente para reflexionar sobre cómo evitar la absorción del agua. En esta prueba se sumerge y gira el balón 250 veces en un recipiente lleno de agua. Antes y después del ensayo se mide el balón en cuestión. Una vez concluida la prueba, el peso puede variar como máximo en un 15 % (FIFA APPROVED) o en un 20 % (FIFA INSPECTED) respecto al valor inicial.

7. CONSERVACIÓN DE LA FORMA Y EL TAMAÑO (solo para el sello FIFA APPROVED) Un balón de máxima calidad tiene que mostrar las mismas características de juego tras un uso prolongado que al comienzo. Después de haber lanzado el balón 2000 veces a 50 km/h contra una plancha de metal, se procede a controlar las costuras y la válvula de aire y se verifican de nuevo la presión, la circunferencia y la esferidad. Los valores indicados solo son válidos para balones del tamaño 5.

The process of continuous re-engineering and adjustment of processes and/or components, with sustainable and social ideals in mind, is of great importance to us. This is implemented through our guidelines for suppliers, which have been in place for a long time, and are particularly concerned with the working conditions at the production locations, whilst entirely prohibiting child labour. We do whatever we can, within our scope of possibilities. We consciously look for certain parameters when selecting our suppliers, and we require certain assurances regarding health and safety and social responsibility in their dealings with the workforce in writing. Regarding sustainability, ecological issues are of particular importance when considering packaging and transportation. Nonetheless, and just because we want to make a difference, we are always looking for possibilities especially in the area of product development. This is an exciting area, where the area of football also yields new approaches every year, which we are always glad to adopt.

Our enduring goal: A mostly pVc-free product range.

The reasons? After thoroughly analysing all the data on the lung and joint ailments amongst many workers involved in PVC manufacturing, the employers’ liability insurance association declared that they recognized VC sickness as a legitimate occupational hazard. Vinyl chloride can cause cancer in humans and can cause genetic mutations. Soft PVC is physiologically undesirable because of the softening agents it contains, yet it continues to be very widespread because of its usability and its price. The softening agents can damage the liver and the kidneys and also are suspected of causing cancer. Reasons enough for us to aim to be PVC-free.

What have we achieved for 2010?

In this catalogue, we are presenting a product line-up that is 99% PVC-free. This means that our huge efforts have paid off in that all our clothing, goalkeeper gloves, football boots, and shin guards, all our footballs except one, as well as our entire packaging material, are now PVC-free.

And what else?

The pigments in our goalkeeper gloves and football boots are water-based. Our glues are almost completely solvent-free. The bladders in our balls are made mainly from natural latex. Our bags are produced in ecologically-certified facilities. We have revolutionized our packaging and shipping operations. We ship our goalkeeper gloves and shin guards in soft packaging. We ship our balls deflated. How come? That way we pack a third more product per crate, which means a third more product per container, which means energy savings of 30% per unit shipped – there are no two ways about it: it just makes sense to be environmentally minded. That’s how we see things. That’s how we do things. Para nosotros, el concepto de “progreso” va unido al respeto por todo ser vivo y por el medio ambiente. Concedemos un gran valor a la sostenibilidad ecológica y social. Ello se refleja en las instrucciones que damos a nuestros proveedores, vigentes desde hace años y que, en particular, determinan las condiciones laborales en los centros de producción y prohíben por completo el trabajo infantil. En lo relativo a la sostenibilidad medioambiental, enfatizamos la importancia del embalaje y transporte desde un punto de vista ecológico. Con todo, y precisamente porque pretendemos ser diferentes, nos esforzamos en abrir nuevas vías respecto al desarrollo de nuestros productos. Se trata de un área de desarrollo fascinante que ofrece año tras año nuevas alternativas que deseamos incorporar a nuestra filosofía empresarial. Seguimos trabajando además para ofrecerte en un futuro próximo una gama de productos libre de PVC.

¿Por qué? Como reacción ante las enfermedades pulmonares y las artropatías de un gran número de trabajadores del sector productivo del PVC, las mutuas de accidentes de trabajo y enfermedades laborales reconocieron como enfermedad profesional, tras un profundo análisis, la enfermedad ocasionada por el cloruro de vinilo. El cloruro de vinilo puede producir cáncer y también provocar efectos mutagénicos en las personas. El PVC plastificado es fisiológicamente un producto sospechoso debido a los plastificantes que contiene, pero, por desgracia, y debido a su bajo precio y sus propiedades, es todavía de uso masivo. Los plastificantes pueden dañar el hígado y los riñones, y se sospecha que podrían ser cancerígenos. Para nosotros estos motivos justifican sobradamente el objetivo de conseguir una producción libre de PVC.

¿Qué hemos logrado para 2010? En este catálogo el 99% de los productos que presentamos carece de PVC. Eso implica que, con un gran esfuerzo, hemos logrado eliminar el PVC de la totalidad de nuestros textiles, guantes de portero, botas de fútbol, espinilleras y resto de artículos, así como de todo el ma-

terial de embalaje, con la única excepción de un solo balón. ¿Y qué más? Los colorantes de nuestros guantes de portero y de las botas de fútbol son a base de agua. Nuestros pegamentos están casi libres de disolventes. Las vejigas de nuestros balones se producen principalmente con látex natural. Nuestras bolsas se fabrican en centros de producción certificados según criterios medioambientales. Pero también tenemos una política de embalajes especial. Los guantes de portero y las espinilleras se distribuyen en embalajes plásticos. Nuestros balones van desinflados. ¿Por qué razón? Bien simple: porque ello significa un tercio más de productos por caja, un tercio más de productos por contenedor y, por consiguiente, un tercio menos de combustible consumido por unidad enviada. Eso es lo que para uhlsport representa una adecuada política de envíos en términos ecológicos. Esa es nuestra forma de pensar. Y de actuar.

In an industry that used to be infamous for low wages and unfair working conditions, we set out to work with producers who commit to upholding our standards of social welfare and provide their employees with good working conditions and completely reject child labour and who submit to scrutiny by IMAC, the Independent Monitoring Association for Child Labour. Where applicable to ensure compliance with our standards, we demand that stitching centres conduct self-audits, which we monitor regularly. As a result, we will offer two fair-trade balls in our 2009 collection. These balls are our way of showing support to the organisation that has done the most to improve conditions for workers in plants around the world.
