Breaking User Facets

By Carel Go

S

ocial media, a lure for countless users to share and receive any information they wish to view of their free will. It is where people can choose to be who they want to be, and present themselves in such a way that allows others to

look up to them in admiration and awe. Hence, social media users create certain facets of their personalities but never reveal their entire true self online in order to look presentable in the best way possible while hiding their vulnerability in the shadows. Everyone has their own comfort zone-it is only natural. For a young female teenager, freely sharing her genuine feelings on social media can be considered quite uncomfortable for her, as everyone can freely have an idea of what she is really like and what she does in her everyday life. It worries her, knowing that going public impulsively on social media can expose her to unwanted and unsolicited attention. However, she still wants to share her proudest moments and significant changes in her life with others, especially her family and friends, as well as some personal and fun moments that she had with close friends. Because of this, she decides to have two different accounts, one public and the other private. Her public account contains moments that she feels confident enough to share with the world and most of the people she knows. She is more selective of what she posts publicly and always strives to pick the best photos. On the other hand, her private account is a secret that is only shared with the people closest to her heart. She is more carefree of what she posts privately and freely posts about whatever she feels like posting, from wacky selfies to food and scenery.

"NOT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE POSTED ON PUBLIC, SAVE SOME FOR PRIVATE." -Margaret Arboleda

But why does she need two accounts? Why does she need to hide who she truly is? What is stopping her from revealing her real self? It could be her fear of showing vulnerability in a cold society where a single mistake can be unforgiven, because of the eyes watching her from every corner of the screen–analyzing and always ready to throw judgments across her face for every single picture she posts. Social media causes people of her age and generation to have several masks for certain occasions due to the need for tactful and cautious posting. It does not have to be this way though, as people’s judgments can only hinder her from growing and developing as a person. Therefore, she decided to break out of that shell and take a breather from social media in order to focus more on herself and catch up on life. Eventually, after taking a break from posting on social media, there are some realizations that were made by the young teenager. She realized that social media is more than just posting, liking, commenting, and sharing. Social media can be used as a relief from boredom, a source of information for educational purposes, a platform for news, and a stage for self-expression. It can be all sorts of good things, as it is a free, clean, and blank space for anyone of any background to write upon.
