2022 SKS A healthy mind in a healthy body! The new information that neuroscience offers us is the human body is the state and the human brain is the government. The gains of sports on one's character are also undeniable. The strong character of the athlete is important in the continuity of success. If a person does not have a sustainable character trait, success will come and go like a flash in the pan. In other words, mental health is both the cause and the result of physical health. The one who manages his/her brain well manages his/her body well. That is why the strength of personality and character is important in sports. So is team spirit… Being excited about the same thing and giving the same reactions is equally important. Sports and physical exercises are an area that positively affects our mental health. Sport is also used as a method of reducing stress in people who are coded to move and exercise My biggest advice to those who are engaged in sports for professional, hobby or health purposes, it is very important that you combine all of these with the endurance training you learn here, focusing on the target, determining your purpose and adding meaning to the sport, in order to ensure permanent success. If sports or other exercises are done with pleasure without competing with someone or oneself, it contributes to mental and health. Feeling energetic and vigorous at the end of the sport shows that the sport is beneficial. The effect of movement is known to reduce the heart diseases and some other diseases. Regular and measured sports are known to contribute to emotional discharge, calmness, comfort and relaxation of the mind as well as physical health. It is considered as an occupational therapy. Western scientists carry out large research projects to make people both wealthy and happy. For example, Director of the USA Morrishtown Center for Stress Diagnosis and Treatment, Dr. William Rosenblatt, in his study which summarize the results of long studies showed us that: “Married people are exposed to less stress than singles, those who have a balanced diet than those who have malnutrition, those who do not drink and smoke are less exposed to stress than smokers and alcoholics, and those who do sports are less exposed to stress than those who are clumsy.” Strong personality and strong character are important in sports. We know that behind the success of sports there is a great labour and effort. As it is always said in sports, ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body', we can say that the opposite is true as well, 'A healthy body resides in a healthy mind'. The person who are not strong-minded cannot be successful in sports. It is quite possible to show hundreds of examples of this. No matter which field you look at in a successful sports field and whether it is an individual or a team, it is seen that that athlete or team has a strong mind. I must say that Üsküdar University has the same principle in its success in the field of sports. Once upon a time, we came together with officials from the National Team as part of a study. We brainstormed on how to provide focus training to athletes. We had a lot of discussion about how negative cheering and speech negatively affecting the athletes and losing their focus. Here, in such situations, it is important for a person to focus on the target, and this is only possible by adding his feelings to the work he is doing. Just playing with logic is different and playing it by attributing a high value and meaning to what you do is completely different. The feeling of being national affects the love of the country a lot. While I wish the first issue of our SKS UNI LIFE journal to be good for our university, I would like to emphasize once again that I wholeheartedly support all sports branches of Üsküdar University, our athletes and our managers who are devoted to sports. Personality and character strength are very important in sports If there is no sustainable character, success is not permanent! Stay healthy, stay active… Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan Üsküdar University Founding Rector-Psychiatrist

The position of television in digitalizing platforms I Asst. Prof. Cem TUTAR In the 1980s, television broadcasting came to the forefront as a mass media that is located in the center of the advertising and marketing world, with purely entertainment content, in which similar contents are presented in a global context in parallel with the developments in satellite and communication technologies. Umberto Eco meets this period with the conceptualization of Paleo-Television and Neo-Television. While Neo-Television emerged in Italy in the early 1980s as the demand of the global economic system, it is a represent of horizontal and vertical monopolies in the media and financial sector. In this period, when advertising activities were placed at the heart of television broadcasting, commercial channels became visible in Neo-Television. While the understanding of public broadcasting came to the fore in these years when television gained wide currency, television fulfilled basic functions such as informing, entertaining and notifying. The economic transformations in the social sphere, especially the neoliberal policies that have become visible since the 1970s, have caused the public broadcasting approach to be set aside in television broadcasting and accelerated ÜNİLİFE 1.number 1 n the historical process, technical innovations and the development of technology stand out as an important factor in shaping the socio-cultural field. While the mass media, whose prevalence increased in the 19th century, primarily focused on the printed media, in the early 20th century, with the invention of the cinema, which can be considered as a continuation of the camera, the motion image affected the socio-cultural field. Cinema, which was also used as a propaganda tool in this period, achieved a significant breakthrough in the field of mass communication with television as a domestic tool since the beginning of the 1950s. private television broadcasting. Artist: Kadriye Çetinkaya sks.uskudar.edu.tr

This development process of television as a mass communication tool continued with the reflections of these technologies in the field of broadcasting, with the concept of digital capitalism became visible in the socio-economic structure in the 1990s. In this period, the configuration of the service and entertainment sector of the capitalist system on digital platforms has also dramatically changed the structure of television. IDATE's statement "Institut de l'Audiovisuel et des Télécommunications en Europe" will be useful in determining the current situation of digital broadcasting and thematic channels in Europe and America. IDATE is a founding member of ETCA “Europen Thematic Channels Association” and ACCES “Association of Cable and Satellite Channels”. While thematic television broadcasting increased rapidly with this period, mainstream television channels opened many thematic sub-channels, especially news channels. Thematic channels later diversified and developed in many fields such as hobby, beauty and aesthetics, fashion, reality and so on. In the transformation of this publishing approach, which is a product of the socio-cultural field of the period, the desire for individual differentiation in the structure of the postmodern society and the systematic use of the leisure and cultural industries in the process of gaining identity in the social field are effective. IDATE summarizes the transformation process in television broadcasting as follows: The number of digital houses has increased dramatically as a transformation in television broadcasting in Europe and America since the early 2000s. In this new home structure, where smart home systems and internet and satellite technologies show an integrated structure, television has also been integrated with digital systems as a technical tool. As the number of subscribers increased in the rapidly growing digital market as opposed to terrestrial broadcasting, Pay-TV and similar pay-to-watch platforms began to come to the fore. Another dramatic change in television is the rapid increase of medium and small-sized niche channels alongside mainstream television channels. ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 2

As emphasized in the short development line above, television, as a technical tool, is both influenced by the socio-cultural field it is in and transforms it by influencing it. In this dialectical process, digital broadcasting platforms, the number of which has increased rapidly in 2010 and after, should also be considered within this structure. In the process of transforming society as a socio-economic model of the capitalist system, digital broadcasting platforms can be seen as a represent of this process. Art and culture events banned due to the pandemic, cinema halls have made large audiences dependent on digital screens, especially considering that most of the day is spent at home. In this transformation process we are in, while television is affected by this situation as a technical device, I think its importance as a home device has increased even more. Although it is possible that digital platforms can be seen as a negative effect on classical television broadcasting, this process does not work unilaterally against television, considering television as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Television will continue to exist in the socio-cultural field, including in the post-pandemic period. Considering the income inequality in the society inthe economic-political sense, television is still a means of accessing news, entertainment and information for very large masses. Television is still a means of accessing news, entertainment and information for very large masses. For these reasons, television has enriched its presentation medium with platforms such as IPTV and Web Tv by using internet technologies together with digital broadcasting. In this context, it would not be wrong to say that television channels in terrestrial or digital broadcasting will continue to remain as a fundamental tool in shaping the socio-cultural field alongside digital broadcasting platforms. Their platform can be seen as a represent of this process. Especially with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic on November 17, 2019, the restrictions in working life in the global process, parallel to the increase in life for the home, these platforms have started to accompany them in the home environment of millions of people. The fictional or factual contents on these platforms have been decisive in the organization of the time in terms of the values of the consumer society. Digital platforms offer different content to the audience; hobby channels, movie and TV series platforms, and news channels have become the dominant communication tools of this period. Selman Utku Success And Life İn Sport: Get out of your own way! It is difficult to change old habits. Therefore, whenever you learn (or teach) something new, it takes a lot of iteration to change it. Nevertheless, athletes find it difficult to apply what they have learned and applied to competition. That's when the most important key to success comes into play… Nothing more than learning, practice and repetition is sometimes insufficient as well. The most important key to success (which is more about mental play) is when athletes trust their skills and what they have learned. You or your players may have outstanding form or technique, but you need to rely on what you have learned in practice to apply them in competition. Discover your passions! Health, Culture, Sports Specialist Lack of confidence in their skills is the most important reason why athletes cannot repeat what they easily do every day in practice - in competition. What is the reason for the lack of confidence? A few mental game hurdles can come your way: Fear of failure, Perfectionism, High expectations, Focusing on results rather than process, Pressure to play in a big game, The concept of trust, applies universally from youth to professional athletes. To do your absolute best, you must - consistently - rely on what is learned from practice. How do you learn to trust your skills in competition? Start by overcoming the mental barriers I listed above. Get out of your own way and stop controlling your body or over-coaching yourself. Remember that change does not happen overnight. In order to be successful in sports, you need to have good instruction, practice, repetition and trust in your skills. As you can understand from the subjects mentioned above, success in sports is achieved through a multi-factor structure. Be with people who support your dreams! ÜNİLİFE 1.number 7 The key to success in sports, up to a certain level: good training, practice and repetition, most importantly, confidence in your skills. In new learning, thinking that the athlete should be able to apply it immediately is the same thing as believing that some athletes should work on their game and immediately get paid, and it is purely a flight of imagination. Change doesn't happen overnight. When you expect a change to happen overnight, such as suddenly learning how to take a step, you're setting yourself up for failure. Athletes must practice putting what they have learned into action. You need to be an artist and let your skills come true. This is what we call a performance mindset. Great athletes have both a training mindset and a performance mindset. The performance mindset is the ability to trust practice, play freely and let it flow. Athletes with a performance mindset rely on their skills and ability to drive their performance on autopilot. Athletes with a performance mindset describe their performance as fluid, instinctive, unconscious, natural and effortless. sks.uskudar.edu.tr

The pandemic and the measures it has forced on us have undoubtedly affected all of us; however, some social groups in society had a more disadvantaged position than others. Elderly individuals, children and women have felt and continue to feel the effects of the pandemic very heavily. Statistics show that men have a harder time surviving the disease caused by the COVID 19 virus than women, and the death rate is higher in men. On the other hand, women are faced with economic and social problems caused by the pandemic much more than men. Women are employed more in precarious jobs than men, so they stay economically vulnerable with the pandemic. Women have unpaid duties such as taking care of children and the elderly, and during the isolation period, these duties were added with other responsibilities at the same place and time. It is a fact that domestic violence has increased during the pandemic period. We have witnessed that older individuals were subject to more leave-of-home restrictions than other age groups in the pandemic, they were discriminated against more than ever due to their age, and they become unemployed. The fact that they are more vulnerable to the health risks created by the virus has also left negative marks in terms of mental and physical health. At the age when contact is the most important and educational, they experienced non-contact, distance and being away from nature. Since the COVID virus, which entered our lives at the end of 2019, was declared a pandemic, strict isolation and social distance measures have been taken almost all over the world. The frightening images and mass deaths from China, the country where the virus was first seen, and then Italy, greatly increased our level of fear. The pandemic process has started with bans on leaving the house, masks, social distance and hygiene warnings in Turkey. Problems that emerged with the pandemic such as unemployment, economic problems, closure of schools, and children who do not have internet access or have limited internet access being away from education problems seem to leave lasting effects. It's easy to say, but we went through a very difficult time in our life, and we're still not quite over it. Assoc. Dr. Gül Esra Atalay The Silent And Peaceless Children Of The Pandemic; Generation C ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 16

The pandemic experiences of children and adolescents may have left indelible effects throughout their lives. Such that, Generation C has become mentioned. The letter C refers to Covid, and this concept aims to emphasize that the pandemic has deeply affected children who experience it. According to UNICEF's report, more than 750 million children worldwide have been affected by partial or full school closures. School is not just a place for children to learn and take lessons, it is also a place to socialize and receive news from the world outside of its own social circle. The problems experienced by children who could not go to school for a long time, had to get used to distance education, or stayed away from education in regions where there were not sufficient technical equipment and infrastructure opportunities, or in socio-economic groups, do not seem to be easily overcome. They fell in the middle of a masquerade ball at the time when they would get to know themselves by meeting and communicating with others. Peace, trust, sincerity gave place to fear, panic and distance. The mental health of these children who experience this period at a very critical age when the connection with real life is reduced to a minimum, is in danger. As the European Commission underlined, depression, anxiety disorder and suicide attempts among children increased during the pandemic period. Lockdowns for isolation have caused family members to spend much more time together at home than usual. While this seems like an advantage for strengthening family relations at first glance, the situation may lead to different results in different segments of the society. Women are not the only victims of domestic violence, which has increased in the pandemic. Parental violence against children has also increased and it is seen as an important factor in negatively affecting the mental health of these children. Artist: Aslıhan Kuruzu ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 17

Pandemic-era children have met with isolation while they are still growing up. Previously, we expected them to be curious and interested in everything. We were encouraging them to get involved in life and limit their relationship with technology. We wanted them to maintain good, warm and sincere relations with their environment. However, the pandemic forced the children to the contrary. This time we said, "Don't touch anything", "Stay at home", "Do not stay away from the computer", "Stay away from people". They were confined to their homes at such a time when they were still trying to understand and make sense of the world and social life. At the age when contact is the most important and educational, they experienced not to contact, have distance and being away from nature. Children whose physical activities and real-life experiences are restricted and who are stuck in their homes are looking for a solution by socializing in social networks and digital games if they have the opportunity. This situation exposes children to many online risks, especially cyberbullying. We do not know to what extent it will be possible to discourage children who are accustomed to sitting in front of computers and tablets for education, entertainment and socialization during the pandemic period to take them back to physical environments, gardens and nature. A silent, peaceless, angry and fearful generation of pandemic has emerged and efforts to reverse it are lagging. We should not forget the effect of the pandemic period on adults. Due to the pandemic, primary and secondary schools, as well as universities, have switched to distance education, and many courses are still carried out with distance education. Online applications, where interaction is very limited compared to face-to-face education, have deprived adults of hands-on lessons that would serve to socialize, meet new people and practice their profession. University life is transformative and developer, and this is not just because of the knowledge gained in lectures in lecture halls. University canteen, corridors, gardens and the communication established in these places, getting to know people from different cultures, sharing ideas and discussions are sometimes more effective than lectures. The pandemic has interrupted these encounters and development opportunities. University students, who were on the way to find themselves by being away from the family and becoming adults and independent individuals, had to return to their homes. The sedentary and inactive years of the pandemic dragged university youth into stress, anxiety and depression. Yet, wherever young people are, there is creativity and hope. Although the pandemic generation, COVID Generation, Generation C or whatever it is called, it feels good to think that today's children and youth have lost a lot of energy and time in dealing with the problems created by this painful period, more efforts are made than previous generations to prevent similar global epidemics and disasters, they will spend money and gain the conciseness and awareness needed for a more liveable world, albeit the hard way. 1984 – George Orwell It is a politically revolutionary book which is written in 1948, and a cleverly fictionalized. Even though 1984 has passed, this novel, which symbolizes the present and the future, is far beyond the period in which it was written and will never lose its actuality. ‘’Commitment means not thinking, it means not needing to think. Attachment is unconsciousness.'’ Of Mice and Men – John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men chronicles the complex story of the friendship between two seasonal farm workers. Their biggest dream is to buy a small land and live humanely. Unfortunately, the best-thought-out plans of rats and humans often fail. ‘'A man's heart does not need mind to be good. It seems to me that these two do not go together very well. You look at a smart man, and you see that he is not a good person at all.'' Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury "There are worse crimes than burning a book. One of them is not reading a book." It is a successful dystopia that reveals a world without books. ÜNİLİFE 1.number The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini "Children are not colouring books. You can't paint them your favorite colors." zIt is the story of a true friendship that you will re-read from the beginning. This novel, which reveals the behind the scenes of history that has not been mentioned in any novel before, tells the story of two friends who cannot be separated from each other despite ethnic and religious differences. Dönüşüm – Franz Kafka "Everyone lives behind a bar that they carry with them. That's why so much has been written about animals now. It's an expression of longing for a free and natural life. However, for humans, natural life is human life. But they don't understand it. They don't want to understand it. It's very difficult to live like a human, so there's a desire to get rid of it, at least on a fictional level." Franz Kafka pushes people to think and question life through the metaphor of the insect. It is strikingly expressed how a person who has lost his identity is ostracized by society and his family and left to die. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger "Don't tell anyone anything. Then you start to miss everyone." The Catcher in the Rye, also known as Gönülçelen in Turkish, tells the story of the difficulties of adolescence and being left alone. sks.uskudar.edu.tr 21

ÜNİLİFE 1.number Seagull - Jonathan Livingston It is a book that tells us that we can go beyond our own limits through the life of a seagull. Animal Farm – George Orwell "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." It is a magnificent novel about the transition of the dream of an egalitarian society to a dictatorship. Chess – Stefan Zweig "One lived like a diver with a glass bell in the black ocean of silence, even like a diver who realized that the rope connecting him to the outside world was broken and would never be pulled up from that quiet depth." It is a compelling novel written unlaboured that you can finish at one sitting. 22 "We can break our ignorance, find ourselves using our skills, talents and intelligence, be ourselves. ÜNİLİFE 1.number Written by Nobel Prize-winning author Luigi Pirandello, One, No One, One Hundred Thousand is an unsettling novel about how we perceive ourselves and how the outside world perceives us. The author tells us that the concept we call reality is actually a simple illusion consisting of our perception of that moment. The novel, which started when the main character Vitangelo Moscarda heard from his wife one day that his nose was slightly crooked to the right, invites the readers to internal confrontations from physical analysis. Who do we see when we look in the mirror? Is it what we perceive or what others see? Moscarda, who lived happily with her imperfect nose, which she did not consider until the age of 28, starts to reflect on the perception of herself and others with a single word from her husband and includes us in this journey. Truth is diverse. According to everyone's eyes and depending on the moment, we perceive the outside world differently. However, we are so confident in our perceptions that we believe that everyone experiences the same things as we do. Otherwise we begin to dictate our reality to others, which is a futile effort. Our experiences are as unique as we are, and it is not possible for anyone else to have the same experiences as us. Disturbed by this, Moscarda begins to play games to destroy his image in the eyes of others. Inherited from his father, he transforms one of his thousands of selves, popularly known as Moscardo the Moneymaker, into Mad Moscardo. This transformation is liberating as well as encouraging for new steps. One, No One and One Hundred Thousand: A World of Countless Realities Aycan Öztekin Book review sks.uskudar.edu.tr 23

ÜNİLİFE 1.number “If I don't feel like what I see, or don't want to be, what I see is a stranger to me, even if I've said so far this is my destiny, I can dream of a whole new future.” With this sentence, the author begins an uneasy questioning about how we become alienated from ourselves. The transformation of our own selves into thousands of different forms in front of our eyes is disturbing and impossible to ignore. So why do we settle for being cut into a thousand pieces? “Our eyes do not know what they see unless the perspective of others helps us shape our own perception; Our perception gets mixed up because what we think is unique to ourselves actually speaks to others within us, and we can never feel alone.” So, do we need the perspective of others? Do we need each other's perception to make sense of the world and thus survive? However, we become a prisoner of a self that does not belong to us by doing this. This situation makes our main character Moscardo nervous as well as the readers. As we are in between the lines, we are separated from our stranger selves and become lonely. It's really lonely, but that is it. A liberating and insane solitude, away from all labels and all unnecessary imputations… Perhaps it is a dream to reach freedom without madness. One of the important works of modern literature, completed in 16 years by the author, One, No One, One Hundred Thousand is a unique novel that will change the reader's view of himself and his environment, and will make the individual question the search for identity and the impossibility of existence. sks.uskudar.edu.tr 24

I was born in 1986 in Gazipaşa, Antalya. I studied primary school in the village school, secondary school in Gazipaşa İstiklal Primary School located in the district centre, and high school in Antalya Karatay High School. In 2004, I won the Physical Education and Sports Teaching Department of Akdeniz University, School of Physical Education and Sports, with the 1st place. However, due to the National Team Camps, problems arose in terms of participation and absenteeism in the camps. In order to create a better working environment and achieve the success I aimed for in sports, I continued my education in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching at Adnan Menderes University, School of Physical Education and Sports, since 2006. I graduated from this department in 2009 and completed my higher education. Education: Professional Career: In 2013, I was appointed to Antalya Youth Services and Sports Provincial Directorate as an athletics trainer. Under the same roof of Alanya Youth Services and Sports District Directorate, we continue our work with the young athletes who are the champion candidates of the future. I also advise and mentor young athletes at the National Team level and some elite athletes at the Olympic Level. I continue to bring important achievements to my country by continuing my active sports career, and I share my knowledge and experiences with young athletes. Interview with Ahmet Arslan, the Lion of the Mountains: "First meeting with running" ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 38

My Sports Career: I started athletism in 1998 with the guidance of my physical education teacher. Between 1998-2004, I competed in cross and track events (races). In this process, I was running with pleasure and willingly on cross with a high degree of difficulty, and I realized that I am more successful in such races. This situation enabled me to lead to mountain running in the following periods. In 2004, I had to take a break from athletism for a while. However, I had a great love for athletism and it made me unhappy to quit athletism before I could achieve my goals. This situation continued about a year. In order to reach my goals, I decided to do athletism again despite all the difficulties. Since 2005, I have focused on mountain running. My orientation to mountain running was similar to the trial and error method, but eventually I discovered my favourite sport branch that best suited my physical characteristics. As a result of the right branch, the right coach, the right training techniques and devoted efforts, I achieved significant success in this branch in a short time. After a successful and important career, I ended my active sports career in 2019. What is the most important breaking moment in my sports career? Since my high school years, I started to train regularly within the club. I competed in cross and track races between 2000-2004. Between 2004-2005, I had to take a break from athletics for a while. In 2005, I decided to continue athletics again. After continuing with athletics again, I became aware of the existence of a branch called mountain running. In those years, mountain running had just came to be known in Turkey. I was running with pleasure and love in challenging cross races. I believed that I could do it in mountain running as well, and I informed my trainer that I wanted to participate in the race in this branch. My coach gave a positive response to this request. The first mountain running race I participated in was the Turkish Championship and I was selected for the national team as the Turkey Champion. Since therefore, my mountain running adventure started. I went up to the level of the National Team in a short time and started to run in international competitions. The most important breaking moment of my sports career was to start sports again and to choose the right branch which was mountain running. First meeting with running When I was in secondary school, our gym teacher was choosing the school running team members, so I took a part of the auditions. During the auditions, I was ahead and won by landslide and that's how I got my teacher's attention. The most important factors for me to start sports and running were the guidance and help of my physical education teacher, and the fact that my older brother was a member of the running team. ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 39

My memories of the race that stuck in my mind the most: I started sports in 1998, but my professional career started in 2005 when I met mountain running. After 2005, I won 6 European Championships between 2007-20012, 2 times in the World, 3rd place in the world 2 times, 3rd place in Europe 2 times, Red Bull 400 World Championship, 14 times in the mountain running races I participated in. I have won the Red Bull 400 Championship and many international competitions. When I won my first European championship in 2007, the Italian athlete, who came in second, could not accept being passed and did not go up to the rostrum at the ceremony. Because my championship that year was a complete surprise. I still can't forget this attitude of my opponent as I achieved the most important achievement of my career. However, in the following years, we became very good friends with the Italian athlete Marco De Gasperi and when I made sudden fit in many races he did not dare to counter because he knew that it was difficult for him to pass me. He had fully accepted my mastery. Lessons about life we can take from a running track or a running race: Throughout my active sports life, running has always been the most important occupation of my life. Running wasn't just about fighting with opponents on the tracks or trying to surpass for me. Running was actually a way to be stronger against life and life's difficulties. With the effect of time spent on sports and training, our body gets stronger physically. At the same time, a physically strong body becomes mentally healthier and has a strong will. Sports not only brought me to a good level in terms of performance and won championships, but also contributed to the forming of my personality. The branch I did was mountain running and mountain running races are run on up and down tracks in nature. I always think that these ups and downs have similarities with the difficulties in our lives. The road to success and results can sometimes be at the end of a difficult hill, and sometimes behind a hard descent. How is your sports life going? Do you have other hobbies besides running? How do you fell when you run? In 2019, I ended my active sports life. After this process, I dedicate a little more time to normal life. In recent years, I have been working as an athletics trainer apart from running. I try to help young athletes who are talented and willing to play athletics, and help them become athletes. I am also trying to lead the Alanya Ultra Trail Organization that we started in Alanya in 2017. I am very happy with the point reached by the Alanya Ultra Trail organization, which we have realized to contribute to Turkish sports and to add value to the region I live in. The organization has reached a very important position in the international arena. ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 40

Millionaire: Life Repays Those Who Don't Give Up Slumdog Millionaire tells about the journey of Indian Jamal's difficult life to lead him to millions. Explaining that the passion for survival and struggle finally pays off, the film differs from classical Bollywood and Hollywood productions with the atmosphere it creates. The movie starts with the scene where Jamal, who works as a tea man in a call center, comes to the final question of 20 million rupees in India's millions-winning contest. Jamal, who is tried to be humiliated in front of everyone due to his job and social position by the speaker, remains unresponsive and does not give what he wants to the speaker. Jamal is an 18-year-old teenager who has passed all the exams of life. His life experience is much more than the ignorant speaker in front of him. His heart is as if he has a crust and these simple words will not hurt him. He is too strong to suffer ever after. Believing that Jamal is cheating, the competition team tortures the young man and forces him to confess. However, there is no cheating or copying. Traveling between the past and the present, we see how questions are answered. The answers are hidden in Jamal's hard life. The first question and the first answer give us an important clue about our main character. The first question was the movie star which was very popular in Jamal's childhood. The answer is the actor who came to their neighbourhood one day and Jamal jumped into poop and forced all the possibilities to get a signature from him. In this scene, we see a determined and faithful boy who overcomes all kinds of difficulties to get what he wants. This feature of Jamal will become stronger as the years go by and will form the key element of his character. Aycan Öztekin Movie Review ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 41

However, the answers to some questions are not hidden in the past. At that moment, it is determined by Jamal's clever moves in that competitive atmosphere. He won't be fooled by the speaker who wants to redirect him during the ad break. He knows who to trust and whom not to trust. It does the opposite of what the speaker says and surprises both the speaker and the audience. His brother Salim, who has an important place in Jamal's life, has the opposite character of Jamal with his rebellious, unlimited and greedy nature. He will cause difficulties for his brother throughout his life, and the interests of these two brothers will often conflict. After their mother is brutally murdered, they have no one left but each other. Sometimes they find a way to survive by stealing and sometimes by being vigilant. Although they are opposite to each other, they still have the only support from each other. At the end of the movie, Salim takes a critical decision to make up for all the injustices he has done to his brother and undertakes an important role in Jamal's happy ending. The biggest motivation of our main character to win the contest is his childhood love and his best friend Latika. Sharing the same difficult fate, our couple falls apart because of Salim, and Latika is forced to stay with an abusive, oppressive and controlling man. The competition thus takes on a different meaning for Jamal, who is determined to save the love of his life from this prison life. “The Three Musketeers” is the name Jamal, Latika and Salim give to their friendship formed by the intersection of their unfortunate lives, and the contest ends with asking about the third swordsman in the Three Musketeers book by Alexandre Dumas, as if to emphasize the struggle of these three friends that form the basis of the movie. Jamal, who won the grand prize and got his love, finally got the reward of his fight. The point he has reached by dragging himself up by his bootstraps as peaceful as his childhood, who lived like a fugitive with his brother on the trains years ago and could not even imagine this. This contest is just a symbol. A hopeful story that shows that life finally pays off to those who struggle, and for those who do not let life win... ÜNİLİFE 1.number sks.uskudar.edu.tr 42
