The pounding feet mock you from behind. The fini h line slowly focuses in the runner's vision. and the adrenaline kicks in. Keeping a steady pace throughout the race is essential for the runner's po ition in the end re ult. but the race gains its peak of interest in the final stretch. Everyone on the team this season has pushed themselves to the very limits. A young athlete. Alyssa Allison (10) , has defined what it mean to push yourself to the limits. Alyssa Allison won fir place in the meets at Hancock, Poto i. Conference. and Distri ts. She al o won an overall 2nd place in her di .: :-::>n he state meet. Another young thlete pushing the limits was Tiffany S mith (9). Smith impressed the coache by placing in the top twenty spots in all regular season meet . Deon Russell (11) and Cole Allison (9) worked as a team to push their opponents to the limit. Russell and Cole Allison kept a steady pace with each other as a mean. of keeping ahead of fellow runner and moving them elve, to the front of the pack. The motivation behind cross country runners i n t only the physical prowess. but it is also the mental challenge to become the best. r

This year our chool had a new pirit about It. We ·aw more black and gold faces, chool tee-shirt . and energy at our pep assemblie Our students caught the ·pirit thb year with some motivation from our cheerleader . The cheerleader::. tried harder than e er to get the spirit going with new cheers. chant , and a newly-found readine for the game. They have been preparing for this year all summer. At camp, they won camp champs for having the best cheer. 3rd place for their dance routine, blue superior ribbons eve1 ' night. spirit stick every night. and had two UCA ALL-STARS. Deanna Patterson (12) and Tiffanie Hedger (12) When asked about the u d's spirit and how they keep their's up while spreading it throughout our school and community. He dger said. "In all other sports when you mis the catch. all you lose is the ball." This was also one of the quotes on the team's camp h1rts. So while they spread spirit and made it reach a new nigh. they still stuck together and stayed proud of the fact that they were not nly cheerleaders. but also spirit throwers. D

What makes track different from any other sport? Jeremy Culton (11) answered with his statement. "I like track because it gives me, along with many others, a chance to shine." Instead of playing as a whole, each person gets to be in ~......'i'.:·:"'...:.i. the spotlight for a moment. Although the boys faced tough competition from the beginning of the season until the end, they managed to pull together to produce a great season. Brandon Moore (12) showed off his hard work and dedication by being a constant threat to his opponents in polevaulting. Cary Armbruster (12) placed first in the 100meter hurtles in sectionals. "It was kind of rough for me to get ~~;~~~tM back into it after having such a long break, but after all of the ~ practices, it got easier for me." Not only will Armbruster be going to state, but also the 4x100 and 4x200 teams will be attending as well. Antonio Tullock (12) said, "I am really proud to say that I am able to go to state with a great group of guys that have worked hard all season. What a way to end my track career at Festus." In the end, the Festus boy's track team did what they had to do in order to get as far as they did, while still having time to be in the spotlight.

The teams are tied. Buzz ... the sound signals the last chance for either of the teams to win it all. "I could have sworn I was faster on the button, and I hope they are wrong," were the thoughts that raced through Dustin Lorenz's (12) mind when he heard the other team hit their buzzer. Even in the spirit of lo ing, Lorenz did show some creativity. "We created many conspiracy theories on why another team won" Amanda Krus (11) also showed her creativity, "I wore fun ock and tights. Also, we wore ties once because I wanted to be less nerdy and more fun at the academic tournament." When many people think about academic teams, they don't really consider academics as "fun,' o our Festus academic team tried to liven things up. Some of the team memb rs shared the atmosphere of the Academic Team. "!learned a lot of thing and was nervou in the beginning, but I eventually loosened up," aid Branden Welsh (9). Haley Beckman (11) saw progre sion by" ... having a greater knowledge of mi cellaneous thing ." Even emors. hke Lorenz , learned a few things. ''I wasn't on the academic team last year, so this has been a learning experience. I had to understand what is involved in academic team." said Lorenz. By .eeking a more personal per pective in the aca mic team. one can ee that while there was much hard work involved. there wa also ju t as much fun.

••• Throughout the year Student Council worked hard to organize the activities and events that students have at school. Some of these activities were the most memorable events for the year. For example. StuCo was respon ible for assigning a grade to organize. decorate, and clean up everything for each dance, homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, and prom. While it's true that everyone likes to have fun, it is also true that no one likes to do the dirty work that ensures school events are fun and meaningful. Well, that is exactly what StuCo did successfully this year. One meaningful event StuCo organized this year was the spring blood drive. This year, StuCo started a new tradition--hall decorating. Before homecoming, battle of the classes. and holidays, each class decorated its respective hallway. The competition between classes created school spirit that seemed to have been lying dormant. Between the tiger paws in the senior hallway and the sea of red in the junior hallway, the friendly competition furthered good-sprited rivalries. To get ideas and ways to organize school events, some StuCo members went to a camp in Cape Girardeau. Although they do all this work throughout the year, they also enjoy being together and having fun at these events. tuCo was a lot of fun. My favorite part was getting the groceries for Christmas, said Maggie Page (1 2) . Student Council is an organization that does so much for our school. but at least they had fun doing it all. II

club o\e t;coFV1o\ This year, Spanish Club welcomed a new leader, Mrs. Laura Fernandez. Mrs. Fernandez offered take the reins of the club to "share the Spanish culture" with the students. The president this year, Kasey FraserSmith (11) was excited to participate in the fun activities provided by Spanish Club. "We eat chips and salsa a lot during the club meetings, that is what I look forward to the most," smiles Fraser-Smith. Jaime Sansoucie (11), the vice president this year, had more fun playing the game of BINGO in Spanish. "It's an easy way of learning very common words in Spanish and having lots of fun all at the same time," laughs Sansoucie. Susie Wulfert (11) reveled in the Spanish versus French Club kickball tournament that was held earlier in the year. "Spanish is clearly better than French; we can beat them at anything. We have proof with the kickball game when we came from behind and beat them late in the game," said Wulfert. Although some club members anticipated the competition, others, like Delaney Osbourne (9) , found the meetings very interesting. "I look forward to the meetings because they are really laid back and we have lots of fun trying to talk in Spanish," Osbourne said. 'This year was filled with a variety of students, and I hope to see great turn outs like this again in years to come," concluded Mrs. Fernandez. By Brittany Abrams

Walking along the track, you may not be aware of how clean the area is, but if there were mounds of trash from the previous night's football game, you would notice. "It's sort of hard to wake up early on a Saturday morning to clean, but seeing a clean stadium is worth it. Oh, and the McDonald's is good too," says Mandy Kennon (11) . After every trash pick-up. Key Club members are treated to a breakfast at McDonald's. This year, Key Club also repainted the numbers on the school parking lot. Kelsey Hope (1 0) says that, "it was really hard to see the numbers, and something had to be done about it." Other than cleaning up our schooL Key Club holds a number of fundraisers. Each year. Key Club does such fundraisers as "Pennies for Ponybird" and a toy drive for the less fortunate. Key Club has one motto, "Caring- Our Way of Life." and they live true to that motto. As long as there are students at Festus. there will be a Key Club to help make the school a better place.
