MEET YOUR MENTOR

BRANDON RAMIREZ WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?

WHAT'S YOUR PROGRAM?

I initially wanted to become a

cardiothoracic surgeon.

Thankfully during Covid, I

began to reflect on myself

and realized that I was going

into the wrong field. As a

Latine individual mental

health has often been

stigmatized in my culture, so

I thought it would be a great

opportunity for me to learn

and provide resources for

my community.

PsyD qtr 2 WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH?

Fall 2022

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Seattle, WA

WHAT WOULD

YOUR MENTEE(S)

TO KNOW ABOUT

YOU?

WHAT IS

SOMETHING YOU'D

LIKE TO ACHIEVE

THIS YEAR?

I am terrible at saying

"no" but I am working on

my personal boundaries

this year.

I would love to finish my

first year of grad school! I

am also looking to fully

launch my art store again!

IF YOU WERE

STRANDED ON AN

ISLAND, WHAT

WOULD YOU

CHOOSE TO TAKE

WITH YOU?

Dora's Backpack!

That thing has

everything I need

inside.

IF YOU COULD ONLY

EAT ONE FOOD FOR

THE REST OF YOUR

LIFE, WHAT WOULD

YOU CHOOSE?

Curry. I think most

cultures have their own

version of curry, even if it

is called something else.

But I would chose it,

because there is so many

different types.

WHAT ARE YOUR

PROFESSIONAL

GOALS/INTERSTS? As of right now, I am super

interested in working with

children and young adults

for therapy and then

working in forensic

psychology doing forensic

evaluations.

WHAT INSTRUMENT(S)

DO YOU PLAY, OR DO

YOU WANT TO LEARN?

I play Ukulele, Saxophone,

and the Kalimba. I used to

play Guitar, but I haven't

played since I was 7.

MEET YOUR MENTOR

KORY HARDCASTLE WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?

WHAT'S YOUR PROGRAM?

I could save you all this time reading

an "about me" and give a generic

answer, "I've just always been

interested in the brain." I'm an open

book (sometimes too open) but a few

of the more nuanced reasons range

from mental health struggles that I,

and people close to me, have

experienced; recovering from

multiple brain injuries (how am I

here?); wanting to help children and

their caregivers; a deep dive into

consciousness studies; and, many

more reasons that you'll learn once

we get to know each other better! :)

PsyD

WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH?

Fall 2020

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Seattle, WA

WHAT ARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL GOALS/ INTERESTS? Eventually, I would love to help infants with

disorders of consciousness through assessment,

diagnosis, and treatment planning. The biggest

interest I have held in research surrounds Theory

of Mind, also known as "Mentalizing," and child

development with a pediatric neuropsychology

focus. No matter what, I know I feel a greater

sense of purpose when I'm helping children. Plus, I am able to match wavelengths with kids better

than adults sometimes (jury's out if it's because of

the TBI but I'll let you be the judge).

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF

YOU WERE INVISIBLE FOR

A DAY? Probably cry and be thankful it is only for

a day! You may be able to relate, but I

have experienced the feeling of being

invisible to everyone during some of my

most difficult moments. Being invisible

just doesn't seem fun. For that "silly fun

wack-ah-doo" answer: I'd complete the

mission started by a bunch of Redditors

and see what's really in Area 51

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR

MENTEES TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I have been told that I am very easy to talk to and

that I have a presence that makes others feel

safe. I know from personal experience it is easy to

not reach out for help, but luckily (or unluckily) for

my mentees, I tend to schedule everything and

that includes checking in on a consistent basis.

Outside of being a grad student: my activity level

lies on the extreme ends of a range from

spending lots of time with my 3 cats to bungee

jumping eight times in a handful of months. I have

worked in research for the past 3 years and will be

able to help mentees with most needs

surrounding it. I'm unsure what else to write

without subjecting you to a novel. I look forward

to finding out who wants to be my mentee and

helping you in any way I can! :D

WHAT’S YOUR

FAVORITE LINE FROM

A MOVIE?

This is for my future

mentees, "I can only

show you the door,

you're the one that has

to walk through it" –

Morpheus

IF YOU COULD TALK TO

ONE SPECIES OF ANIMAL,

WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

I want to say cats but I can only

imagine how mean they may be

(except for two of my three cats

where I can imagine how

loving/annoying they'd be. I may

have rubbed off some old

attachment patterns onto

them). So... knowing that... Yea,

I'd still say cats

MEET YOUR MENTOR

MARINA MASAKI

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?

WHAT'S YOUR PROGRAM? CFT, 6th quarter WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH?

Fall 2021

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Seattle (Fremont)

After completing my undergraduate

and graduate studies, I moved to the

SF Bay Area to start a career in Data

Science. Almost immediately, I

started to feel unfulfilled and

unhappy at work. To get by, I started

going to therapy and retreats on

mindfulness, meditation, resilience,

and healing. Through this journey of

self-reflection, I started to notice that

the parts I enjoyed the most about

my job was empathizing and

connecting with others. I hired a

career coach, and realized I need to

shift my career to an LMFT who

fosters connection and growth in

order to feel fulfilled.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL GOALS/ INTERESTS?

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR

MENTEES TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

One of my main goals while practicing couple and

family therapy, is to destigmatize mental and

sexual health issues for the BIPOC community.

One of the ways I advocate for mental health is by

serving as student leader for the Counselors of

Color Student Support Group at AUS. It is a space

where BIPOC students provide support for each

other through race-related issues at AUS. By

serving as the student leader I create a safe

community for BIPOC students, and collaborate

with CFT and CMHC Program Chairs to make

program policy changes that improve the mental

health of future therapists of color.

I have a unique perspective because of the

intersectionality of identities I embody:

cisgendered female, child of immigrants,

Asian-American, bilingual, tech worker, and

trauma survivor. Though I hold many

privileged identities, I have experienced

racism and sexism in White male-dominated

systems and persevered. I value and

appreciate showing up with our whole

selves, because it takes vulnerability. I strive

to be a clinician and mentor with an

acceptance-based approach that celebrates

all forms of self-expression, while affirming

diversity in relationship expression, sexual

expression, race, culture, and trauma.

WHAT DO YOU

VALUE THE MOST

IN A FRIENDSHIP/

COLLEAGUE/ANY

RELATIONSHIP?

Trust, honesty, and

accountability. I love

when I can trust

others, others tell me

things as it is (in a

compassionate way,

not rude way), and

are accountable.

IF YOU COULD

ONLY EAT ONE

FOOD FOR THE

REST OF YOUR

LIFE, WHAT

WOULD YOU

CHOOSE?

This is so hard to

say because I

LOVE food! I would

eat Chipotle

burrito bowls for

the rest of my life.

WHAT IS

SOMETHING YOU

WOULD LIKE TO

ACHIEVE THIS

YEAR?

If I become the

WAMFT student

board member, I

would like to make

a dent in

advocating for

paid internships

for CFT interns.

WHAT

INSTRUMENT(S)

DO YOU PLAY, OR

DO YOU WANT

TO LEARN?

I used to play the

violin, clarinet, and

piano. I would love

to learn how to play

the harp!

MEET YOUR MENTOR

YEONGJU LEE

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?

WHAT'S YOUR PROGRAM?

I chose this field to

positively impact people

with comprehensive

knowledge and

information. I really

appreciated how Clinical

Psychology program at

Antioch University values

social justice as a core

competency to understand

the system of hegemony

and coloniality.

PsyD, Clinical Psychology

WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH? Fall 2022

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Seattle

WHAT WOULD YOUR

MENTEE(S) TO KNOW

ABOUT YOU? I tend to stay quiet at first and

need a time to warm up. I was told

that it could be perceived little

intimidating! It has been my "work

in progress" project. If I seem too

friendly or too quiet at first, that is

probably me trying too hard or

me feeling too nervous. Nothing

about you personally.

WHAT INSTRUMENT(S) DO YOU PLAY, OR DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?

I play clarinet but want to learn

how to play ukulele!

WHAT ARE

YOUR

PROFESSIONAL

INTERESTS/

GOALS? I am currently

interested in

prescription and

psychology.

being in school, but I am also

interested in exploring jobs outside

of therapy.

IF YOU COULD TALK TO

MEET YOUR MENTOR

ANDREA BENSON WHAT ARE YOUR

PROFESSIONAL

INTERESTS/GOALS?

WHAT'S YOUR PROGRAM? CFT, 8th quarter

I am primarily interested

in working with children

and families. My goal is to

work in community

mental health and hope to

mitigate the impact of

adverse childhood

experiences through

community building.

Ultimately, I hope to help

families heal generational

trauma and find new ways

of relating to each other.

WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH? Spring 2021

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE

POTENTIAL MENTEES

KNOW ABOUT YOU? In addition to being a student, I am a

mom of 2 boys, I work at the local

elementary school as a paraeducator,

and I am very involved in my

community. I am excited to share

with you my enthusiasm for learning

and community building!

IF YOU COULD

LIVE ANYWHERE,

WHERE WOULD

YOU LIVE?

I would live in Chile-

There's desert,

mountains, ocean

views, and

Patagonia- so much

to see and do. And

Chileans (in my

experience) are so

warm and friendly.

WHAT IS

SOMETHING YOU

WOULD LIKE TO

ACHIEVE THIS

YEAR?

Starting my

internship! I have

been working for 2

years to get here

and am looking

forward to taking the next step

toward becoming a

therapist.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS

FIELD? I always wanted to be a therapist, but for the longest time I didn't believe I was smart enough or disciplined enough to go to college. I started journaling about my dream back in 2015 and I believe that the practice of writing about my hopes and dreams helped make them a reality. After 18 years as a chef, I finally found the courage to finish my bachelors degree and work toward becoming a therapist.

IF YOU WERE

STRANDED ON AN

ISLAND, WHAT

WOULD YOU

WITH YOU?

A pen, colored

pencils and lots of

paper so I can use the

leisure time for

writing and drawing.

My mentorship style is

very flexible and

mentee-led! I'm excited

to get to know you and

work together to figure

out what YOU want from

this mentorship and

support you in your goals

at AUS and otherwise.

WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH? Fall 2021

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Seattle

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD

OF STUDY? Prior to coming to grad school, I was working in

theatre and education. I have lived experience

with mental health struggles, and have always

been very involved in mental health advocacy

and felt very drawn towards "helper" roles, but I

never wanted to leave the theatre part of my life

completely. When I learned that drama therapy

existed- that I could combine my two passions in

such a beautiful way to help others- I knew I had

to follow that path!

WHAT

INSTRUMENT

(S) DO YOU

PLAY, OR DO

YOU WANT

TO LEARN?

I've always

wanted to learn

to play the

violin!

IF YOU COULD TALK TO ONE SPECIES OF ANIMAL, WHICH

WOULD YOU

CHOOSE?

I would talk to a

manatee for sure- they

are my favorite animal

and they just seem like

they would be a very

chill conversation

partner!

WHAT ARE YOUR

PROFESSIONAL

INTERESTS/GOALS? Post graduation, I'm looking

forward to working both as a

"regular" mental health

counselor and as a drama

therapist. I'm particularly

interested in using drama

therapy and somatic theory to

work with clients who have

experienced complex trauma.

IF YOU WERE

STRANDED ON AN

ISLAND, WHAT

WOULD YOU

CHOOSE TO TAKE

WITH YOU?

Probably my kindle! I

love to read and it

would keep my mind

off the whole "being

stranded on an island"

thing.

MEET YOUR MENTOR

ANNABELLE FALLORIA WHAT'S YOUR PROGRAM?

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE

POTENTIAL MENTEES

KNOW ABOUT YOU?

PsyD, Clinical Psychology,

2nd year

I am an open book and very

candid -- sometimes to a

fault. I have no filter but I am

here to listen and help and

provide resources! I have a lot

of interests in live music

(which Seattle is rich in), the

Marvel Cinematic Universe,

food and desserts, tv shows

and movies! Ask me about

anything and/or everything

and I will answer or try to get

you answers!

WHEN DID YOU COME TO ANTIOCH? Fall Quarter (October) of

2021!

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Lynnwood - a suburb north of

Seattle

WHAT ARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL

INTERESTS/GOALS?

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD OF

STUDY? I was actually on track to go to medical school as I

graduated with a BA in biology and took the MCATs. I

learned that the psychology/psychiatrist course was only a quarter in medical school in the fourth year and I didn't

want to go through three full years if all I was interested in

was working with people and learning about behaviors and getting further into the mind. Beyond that, I have personal

stories and interests within mental health and the field of

psychology so at this time of my life it just seemed like the right decision to switch course and pursue a doctorate in

psychology fully. I chose the PsyD over an PhD specifically because I want to work with people as opposed to

focusing on research and voila, I came here to Antioch

Seattle and have not looked back!

WHAT IS

SOMETHING

YOU WOULD

LIKE TO

ACHIEVE

THIS YEAR? Reduce the

imposter

syndrome I

currently feel as a

part of my

program!

At this time I am kind of in an in-between and

open to all experiences. I have just accepted

a practicum placement to work with inmates

at Monroe Correctional Complex and have

spent the past months as a student clinician

with the Antioch Community Clinic. I hope to

get some other experience inpatient and/or

with a community mental health clinic

setting. I have future aspirations to teach

psychology as well, but after I have worked in

the field and have done psychotherapy for a

number of years. Population, methods,

placement are all in the air right now but I

really am passionate about hearing people's

stories and helping reduce distress they are

feeling.
