SUSTAINABLE FASHION

A Head-to-Toe Sustainable Fashion Guide

With all the headlines about the damage fast fashion is doing to the environment, it’s no wonder there has been a proliferation of brands getting into the slow fashion, sustainable space. At the same time, there’s no industry-wide standard for what organic fashion even means. Still, if you’ve decided you’re ready to ditch fast fashion and lean into a wardrobe featuring pieces that are ethically sourced, carbon neutral and arrive in recyclable packaging, read on for Organic Spa’s head-to-toe guide to 14 items that are good for the planet. We tried every item in the book.

\\\\\ head

Keep your head (naturally) warm

A cute hat can make the difference between a fun outfit and one that’s just meh. For a morning run, reach for Allbirds Pom Beanie and you’re topping your head with a hat that’s made from 100% premium ZQ merino wool, a lower carbon regenerative wool. $38; Allbirds

Costa

Swap your sunglasses for ones that help save the oceans

We think Costa’s Untangled Collection is a pretty cool way to reimagine shades. Made from recycled fishing net material, these sunglasses are a reminder that healthy oceans devoid of discarded nets and gear polluting them and harming marine life—are good for everyone. $229; Costa

Read all about eco-friendly readers

If you’re at that point in life where there are reading glasses in every room of the house, consider this stylish collection of Peepers readers, which feature glasses crafted from recycled plastics, water bottles and even wheat and wood. $29; Peepers

Rethink your undies

While cotton underwear may have long been your go-to, opting for bamboo undies is a far better choice since often cotton farmers use highly toxic chemicals during production. The ones from Bamboo Body are soft and comfy and, best of all, bamboo itself doesn’t require pesticides or fertilizers for healthy growth. $25; Bamboo Body

With a trifecta of products that are carbon neutral, certified organic by GOTS and partnered with Fair Trade factories, the adorable underwear from Pact lives up to its mantra of being Earth’s Favorite. $14; Pact

Sweet dreams

The Goodnight Slip Sleep Dress from Boody is as soft as it is flattering. Crafted from bamboo viscose, a naturally eco-friendly fabric, this slip-on nightie is sure to keep you cool while you snooze. $51; Boody

Switch to earth-friendlier support

We can all agree: Not all sports bras are created equal, but the ones from Definite Articles are decidedly soft and offer excellent support—for even the longest runs. Best of all, each item in the collection uses CiCLO technology, which helps synthetic fibers biodegrade naturally when they are discarded. $58; Definite Articles 4 Organic Spa Sustainable Fashion | 2023

Get a leg up

Slip on a pair of Reprise plant-based leggings and you’ll feel the difference. Made without any polyester, they’re soft, breathable, stretchy and sure to keep you cool. $120; Reprise

Nathan Sports

Stay cozy and warm no matter the season A Puffer Jacket from Nathan is just right for nightly strolls or a long hike. Props for the fact that it’s not only water-resistant and windproof, the outer shell is made of Pertex, a durable recycled fabric and filled with an eco-friendly down alternative that’s recycled and loose so it won’t clump even if you wear this jacket in a downpour. $100; Nathan

Keep your toes warm and give back

The team at Darn Tough Vermont upped the ante last year with the launch of its Knit to Give program. The idea: Why not take overstock merino wool yarn and create super cute limited-edition moisturewicking socks and then give all sales proceeds to the Vermont Foodbank. We’re on board! $23; Darn Tough

Ibex

Top it off

We all know a base layer can take a frigid outdoor workout to a fun one and Ibex is back with its iconic 100% merino rib knit base layer. So yes, it’ll keep you warm and dry (and looking cool too), but we love that Ibex has teamed with Climate Neutral, a nonprofit that’s helping the company assess its current carbon footprint and implement programs to reduce its carbon output. $105: Ibex

Outerknown

Button it down

The Blanket Shirt from Outerknown is as adorable for a WFH Zoom look as it is perfect for a midafternoon hike. The company exists to be sustainable, too, with 95% of its sourced fibers organic, recycled or regenerated. $148; Outerknown

Get poetic

Unleash your inner poet and cozy up in a rose quartz crewneck pullover that’s GOTS-certified and sends a message with its meaningful script by Rumi. Love the ribbed details on the neckline and sleeve cuffs in this soft statement piece created by Marci Zaroff, a fashion visionary who coined and trademarked the word “ecofashion” in the 1990s. Best of all: Every purchase plants a tree! $84; YesAnd

This wrap-dress by Grae Cove goes glam thanks to its ruffle trim and rest assured: This 100% linen dress is OEKO-Tex certified and sourced from the flax plant—so no intensive irrigation and heavy pesticides will ever go into the making of this party dress. $64; Grae Cove

Grab a jumpsuit you’ll jump for joy about An evening out in a jumpsuit is always in style and this long-sleeved organic cotton number that sports a faux-wrap style is not only super versatile, it’s also delivered straight to your door by Wearwell, a women-owned sustainable marketplace. $116; wearwell

\\\\\ formal

Lean into linen

Slip into a softer wrap

The Jersey Midi Wrap Dress from Quince mostly contains Tencel, a biodegradable fabric made from the cellulose in wood pulp. The result: a softer, more breathable fabric than cotton produced with 10-20 times less water. $59; Quince

Quince

When only a heavenly soft sweater will do Made of 100% Mongolian cashmere, known for its sustainable sourcing, this Naadam V-neck cashmere polo—we love it in red as well as dark navy—pairs as well with to-the-office trousers as WFH jeans. Best of all, since Naadam was founded in 2013, the company has been committed to transparency, ethical practices and, ultimately, “making clothes with a conscience.” $225; Naadam
