The Majestic Theater

T

he Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas, has been named the top Live Performance Venue in this year’s Readers Choice Awards. This historic theatre has been a fixture in the downtown area since it was built in 1929, and it continues to be a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Designed by John Eberson for Karl Hoblitzelle’s Interstate Theatres, the Majestic Theatre was intended to be the most modern building in South Texas. It was also the first in the state to be fully air-conditioned. It has since become one of the finest examples of atmospheric theatres worldwide and received National Historic Landmark status in 1993. One of the reasons the Majestic Theatre has maintained its popularity over the years is its ability to work within public and private partnerships. In the 1980s and 90s, the theatre underwent

Meals on Wheels

ongratulations to Meals on Wheels in San Antonio for being voted the top Local Non-profit! Founded in 1977 by two downtown churches, Meals on Wheels has provided nutritious meals and community support to seniors in need for over 45 years. With a new 44,000 sq ft facility that opened in November, Meals on Wheels continues to be a vital part of the community, serving 3500-4000 people daily. Their “neighbors serving neighbors” mission is at the heart of their organization, with a huge swath of the city and community partners that help fund their efforts. Meals on Wheels delivers more than just meals. They provide a living history tour with every delivery and serve as a reminder of the people who built the community. One member of that community is also one of the most inspiring stories — that of Ms. Clara, one of the first African American nurses in Texas. She helped found Meals on Wheels and served on the board. In her later years, Ms. Clara received

Meals on Wheels has come a long way since serving 8 home-delivery meals and now serves 8,000 people annually, delivering 2 million meals this past year alone. Looking to the future, Meals on Wheels has plans to expand their services to more counties and to grow the number of clients they serve. They also plan to offer more services, including home safety programs, home modifications, and support for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. Volunteers are also vital to Meals on Wheels’ success, and they are always looking for more help. Daily deliveries are a great way to get involved; families can bring their children during summer and holidays. Meals on Wheels also provides pet food delivery on weekends once a month. H

aven for Hope has been named the number one Non-Profit to Work With and Volunteer For in San Antonio, and it’s no wonder why. Since opening its doors in 2010, the organization has served more than 40,000 clients and helped countless individuals and families experiencing homelessness get back on their feet. What sets Haven for Hope apart is its unique approach to tackling homelessness. The organization has two sides — individual treatment and helping them care for themselves — which allows them to meet clients where they are and provide the resources they need, whether it’s a safe place to sleep, access to food and showers, or programs to help them get back on their feet. One story that exemplifies the impact of Haven for Hope is that of a Vietnam veteran who, during the pandemic, lost all of his savings and was left with nowhere to go. He turned his life around with the help of the organization’s dedicated staff, including other vets who had been homeless at one point.

They helped him connect with the VA and secure benefits, and he regained his sense of pride and self-worth. Haven for Hope’s core values, like integrity and servant leadership, are another reason it’s a great organization to work with and volunteer for. The staff is recognized monthly for exhibiting these values, and there’s a strong focus on work-life balance, including self-care days and quiet and massage rooms for staff. Looking to the future, Haven for Hope plans to continue doing what they’re doing as long as there is a need. They also have plans to expand their outreach to young adults aging out of foster care and the elderly population.
