From the Artistic Directors Dear Friends, Welcome to The Jungle. We are thrilled to finally bring this astounding theatrical experience to Washington, D.C. Both STC and Woolly Mammoth announced this show a few seasons back, and it feels almost surreal to bring it to Harman Hall at last. It is a project that neither of our theatres could undertake alone and one that feels so important to bring to this city of leaders and policymakers. It's a big deal for two local theatres to join forces in this way. We hope this co-production serves as a reminder of the strength of the D.C. theatre community and its growing ecology. With supplemental VR experiences of the camps of Calais in our lobbies, a communal poem wall on the windows of the Harman, and invigorating conversations held throughout the run, we hope you find The Jungle and all its parts to be galvanizing, immersing, and, ultimately, transformative. At STC, Here There Are Blueberries closes our 22/23 Season by delivering a message both important and hauntingly timely. And our 23/24 Season: Greater Wonders is just around the corner. From the effervescent rock opera Evita to my own interpretation of Macbeth to the joyful mash-up of the Bard and The Beatles in a charming As You Like It, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy. And please do go around the corner to Woolly to catch the final two shows of the season: First, Aya Ogawa’s critically acclaimed The Nosebleed delves into parenthood and what it takes to forgive, complete with a transcendent appearance by a 20th-century icon. Following is Incendiary by Dave Harris, which explodes into a collision of the hilarious and the tragic as a mom is determined to break her son out of death row. Thank you for your continued support of STC, Woolly, and D.C. theatre. See you in the lobby,

About Good Chance Good Chance creates ground-breaking, heartthumping theatre at the intersection of climate, migrant and refugee justice, working with artists from around the world to tell bigger stories of hope and humanity, spark new conversations and make real change possible. Founded by British playwrights Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson, Good Chance established its first temporary Theatre of Hope, an 11-meter geodesic dome, in the heart of the ‘Jungle’ refugee and migrant camp in Calais in September 2015, promoting freedom of expression, creativity and dignity for everyone. The original Calais dome is where Joe and Joe spent seven months running the theatre before writing The Jungle play. Since then, Good Chance has built 11 Domes in Calais, Paris, New York, London, Sheffield and Coventry, engaging over 77,500 people through community-led art-making and coalition building, bringing together diverse groups of people who might otherwise struggle to connect. Alongside the Dome theatres, the company creates groundbreaking Good Chance Productions. The multi award-winning The Jungle is a New York Times Critics Pick, the winner of the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Theatre, the Evening Standard Award for Best Design, Best New Production Award at Broadway World UK, Mousetrap Award for Special Recognition for contribution to Theatre and a Special OBIE Award. We are delighted to welcome back so many performers from the original productions of The Jungle and to welcome our new company members, in total spanning performers from 11 countries all now based in the UK and France.

About STC Shakespeare Theatre Company creates, preserves, and promotes classic theatre— ambitious, enduring plays with universal themes—for all audiences. THEATRE

Land Acknowledgement

Theatre is an event—a special event, an extraordinary event. Theatre is something people do together. Theatre is a search—every day—for the common threads that bind us all.

Shakespeare Theatre Company is honored to welcome everyone to our theatre, which sits on the unceded homeland of the Nacotchtank, Piscataway Conoy, and Pamunkey peoples and their descendants. It is our hope that in gathering together communities from near and far to engage in art and storytelling, we are doing so responsibly, with respect and recognition of Indigenous people and First Nation members and elders who are with us, and of all the Native peoples for whom D.C. is their ancestral home.

SHAKESPEARE The work of our house dramatist has endured over the centuries because it has evolved over the centuries. Shakespeare’s stories, characters, and words continue to resonate, challenge, and evolve by burrowing their way into an audience’s imagination. These plays are like the theatre itself—spaces for endless and restless reinvention.

AUDACITY & VITALITY Classical plays are realized best not by originalism but by walking the path Shakespeare himself followed, creating works that spoke to his own contemporary audience. A classical theatre that does not speak to the present moment is a museum. We tell vital stories in audacious forms. We tell stories that are Shakespearean in the deepest sense, even if (and especially when) they are not written by Shakespeare.

COMMUNITY & EMPATHY Each show is an opportunity to build our community. The theatre is a place—one of our first places, one of our last places—where we are encouraged to inhabit the thoughts and feelings of people radically different from ourselves. By building empathy, we build community; by building community, we build empathy. We create impactful and responsive arts education and community engagement programs to connect audiences to the significance of classic works and themes. We provide a home for leading classical artists and a training ground for the next generation of theatre artists and arts administrators.

Prologue “Zhangal. A Pashto word, which means forest. But this was no forest. It was an old landfill site on the edge of Calais, located between the ferry port and the channel tunnel.” –THE JUNGLE (act one, scene two)

Zhangals can be a place of refuge, a place of solace and solitude. They can also be places of danger, of threats lurking in the shadows. Zhangals are ecosystems of creatures big and small, an environment equal parts welcoming and foreboding. We can take to the trees for shelter, we can hide in the underbrush or nestle in its arms. But the Zhangal shifts with the seasons; it has a life of its own that does not consider those living beneath its canopy. Similarly, zhangals are bulldozed every day with no thought to the communities that call them home.

Photo Ammar Haj Ahmad in the 2023 St. Ann's Warehouse production of The Jungle by Teddy Wolff.

Like young lovers carving their initials into the sturdy trunks of trees in the zhangal, the refugees of the Jungle have this place engraved upon their own hearts. Perhaps their stories will leave a mark on you, too.

Plot Synopsis

We begin at the end, in a refugee camp in Calais, France known as “the Jungle.” Although the camp serves as a relatively safe place for refugees on the arduous journey to asylum, the French police have received authority to demolish the southern half of the Jungle. In a small Afghan restaurant within the camp, the migrants and volunteers try to conduct a census for an accurate number of residents. During this count, devastating news arrives that brings chaos to the group. The police eviction comes to a head and the camp is torn apart. We return now to the beginning, to the genesis of the Jungle in March of 2015. Safi, a Syrian refugee who serves as our narrator of sorts, introduces us to the camp and the refugees residing within it as they form their own community. When a viral photo sparks an influx of volunteers to the Jungle, the ecosystem they have created is challenged.

We learn more about each refugee, the homes they left behind, the borders they have crossed, and the dreams they have for their futures. With police authorization to bulldoze through a portion of the camp, the threat of the French government hangs over the community. With the reassurance that there are no additional evictions planned, the refugees look to move 2,000 people to another area of the camp within three days. However, there is resistance among several nationalities, especially those whose areas of the Jungle would be impacted by the eviction order. The plan to move the camp is successful but, even as the community tries to relocate, they stand against the government with Salar, a restaurant owner who was integral in creating community in the Jungle. Six weeks later, half of the camp is formally evicted. By October 2016, the Jungle disappears entirely.

From Peshawar to Calais BY

AA GILL

Full version of this review originally printed in The Times on February 28, 2016. Reproduced by kind permission.

The first refugee story I covered was a famine in southern Sudan. An editor on the paper (now departed) implored me not to go. Sending a food critic to report on a famine was just bad taste. But who would you trust with bad taste if not a food critic? In the Calais Jungle a few weeks ago, I was reminded of this by a trio of doers-of-good, who were walking up the muddy main drag when one of them saw me and did a theatrical double take. “My God, I was just saying AA Gill should come here and do a review. And here you are.” “And here it is,” I said. They were working in the tented theatre, run by a pair of playwriting Joes, called the Good Chance because the refugees say: “Tonight there's a good chance I shall get to England.” Of all the things I have told people back home, the stuff about the theatre has caused the most eye-rolling, browfurrowing, exasperated exhaling. What a monument to bleeding-heart liberal pretension, a theatre in a refugee camp, I was told. Well, yes, but if I ever find myself lost and penniless, I hope it's the liberals with leaky valves and a penchant for quoting Shakespeare that find me, and not the sanguine, pity-tight realists. When are you too poor, too bereft, too unappreciative to need or deserve art? Is this culture stuff only the property of those who can pay for it—only ever bourgeois decoration? Next door, a Peshawari man makes rotis in a small bread oven, taking the tennis-ball-sized white dough, patting it and flipping it onto a cushion and then sticking it to the inside wall of the stove. Some of the best unleavened bread I've ever eaten was in Peshawar, and this was as good as I remember it. I bought two for €1. The baker

made the long and difficult journey across to Libya, got on a boat over the Mediterranean and ende up in Bari in Italy. Next door is a caff without a sign. I ask the owner what it is called. It has no name. Everyone knows it's here. A name would imply permanence. “My name is Mohammed Ali. But I am not Cassius Clay. Don't be mistaking me for him,” he laughs. Mohammed is also from Peshawar. Today, for lunch, he is offering red bean curry, reheated fried chicken and a stew of chicken livers. The room is a tent, with a make-do kitchen in one corner, a couple of gas rings, a banged-together counter, a kettle, some pots and pans. There's a television and a deep bench around the sides where a handful of young men recharge their phones, text and scroll the unchecked great diaspora of displaced information. The dishes come hot and generous, with fluffy, butty white rice. The red beans are a great, solid aromatic dose of slow-release carbohydrate, as warm and uncomplicated as a hug. The surprise, the great surprise, is the chicken livers. They are perfect. Soft, with that mysterious, renal flavor that is medicinal and industrial, but also like earth and grass licked copper. The sauce is pungently hot, but still a negligée, not a shroud, for the meat. This was a properly, cleverly crafted and wholly unexpected dish, made with finesse and élan that defied the surroundings, but at the same time elevated them. Ali smiled with a rare pride. A cup of coffee—Nescafé, with a lot of milk and even more sugar. After years of po-faced hipster coffee, the sweet, thick Nescafé comes like a mouthful of remembrance. It is the taste of the south, of the Third, leftbehind World. I have sat in the make-do shade of the red earth in so many refugee camps and roadside temporary halts and sipped this bittersweet, mothering coffee. So many slow, hopeful journeys. The desperate desire of everyone is that this is a temporary stop. A brief, cold and trying moment. But despite the best intentions, the Jungle is beginning to become a place, with churches and theatres and art and restaurants. It is germinating into that collective home. But then, isn't this how all places once began? With refugees stopping at a river, a beach, a crossroads and saying, we'll just pause here for a bit. Put on the kettle, kill a chicken.

THE CRISIS... AND THE OPPORTUNITY

ccording to the United Nations, 70 million people suffered displacement in 2015. Millions were refugees from their own countries. Millions more were forced to leave their homes within their own countries. Along with this loss of citizenship and disenfranchisement, many experienced some form of persecution, conflict and violence. In Europe, more people sought asylum in 2015 than any year since the end of World War II.

The Syrian Civil War was one reason for this crisis. So, too, were America’s “nation building” wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another factor was the shared realities of

16

SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY

climate change. Disproportionately impacting the global south, millions more left their homes to support their families. By the end of 2021, the number had grown to more than an estimated 89 million. This is a crisis. It is the largest nonvoluntary movement of people in the history of the world. Though Washington, D.C. seems remote from these events, decisions made here in the capital of the American empire ripple around the world each and every day. And America’s history of intervening in other country’s affairs, colonial in all but name, has helped

shape the contours of this crisis. As V.S. Naipaul, the Booker Prize-winning author who was born in Trinidad to Indian parents, once said: “We wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there.” Between 2015 and 2016, Good Chance Theatre was formed, building a theatre in the camp in Calais known as the Jungle and creating art alongside migrants living there for 7 months. They have dramatized their experiences and the resulting play immerses audiences in a world at a moment of fever pitch. The company’s name is actually drawn from a phrase regularly used by residents in the camp, describing their hope of a ‘good chance’ of reaching the UK, and is spoken by characters in the play. Salar, founder of the Afghan Café, feeds the camp’s residents, regardless of their background. Describing the Jungle, he points to its polyglot origins and the violence forcing people to leave, joined in by a chorus of other voices: “It is Darfur. It is the streets of Kabul / Basra / Gaza City / Aleppo.” The actors pause and look out at the audience, asking them to recognize the opportunity to build a better future. “Tonight we are all Paris. Now more than ever we have to stand together. Good chance may soon be no chance.” In the years since the play first premiered, those words have only grown more resonant. This global manmade crisis may

“[The Jungle] depicts the creation of a syncretic culture. Conflicts arise at a moment’s notice, reflecting differences of nationality, religion, culture, language, and race. At the same time, unexpected connections arise too. The play suggests that borders— between people as well as countries—are more porous than we like to think.”

THE JUNGLE 17

well have contributed to a nationalistic and anti-immigrant backlash. In a 2016 referendum, the United Kingdom would “Brexit” the European Union, and Donald Trump would assume presidential power in America. Around the world, countries closed their borders and hardened their immigration policies. The Jungle, a transient place, served as home in this time of trouble. People from all over the world came together here, forming a place to call their own. The play depicts the creation of a syncretic culture. Conflicts arise at a moment’s notice, reflecting differences of nationality, religion, culture, language, and race. At the same time, unexpected connections arise too. The play suggests that borders—between people as well as countries—are more porous than we like to think. The location of Calais is significant. For much of its history, this port city in France, 22 miles across the English Channel, has served as a dividing line of empires and nations. Some say Julius Caesar led the Roman invasion of Britain from Calais. Richard the Lionheart landed there in 1189, leading a religious crusade in the opposite direction. In 1346, King Edward III laid siege to the city, threatening to kill all the inhabitants. Six brave citizens—the “burghers” of Calais—offered themselves up in self-sacrifice. These stories hover in the background of The Jungle. The creative team of The Jungle is English, and English voices, the first ones heard, frame the play. Having come from the UK to help, these figures are naive, albeit wellintentioned. The real main characters, as we learn, are the camp’s residents. Part of The Jungle’s achievement is providing them with dramatic representation, a local habitation and a name. Alongside, we see representatives of the French government. Most are nameless and faceless. They are enforcers of orders handed down from administrative centers in Lille and Paris. Here, on the periphery of empire, words become acts of violence. In the Dred Scott decision, Chief Justice Taney wrote that Black people, either free or slave, had “no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” As Hannah Arendt observed, once a person’s citizenship is stripped away, it is easy to justify their dehumanization. Among many other things, The Jungle clarifies the interconnectedness between anti-Black racism and the anti-human logic of the modern bureaucratic state.

18

SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY

To emphasize the complicated international interdependencies propelling forced migration, The Jungle integrates documentary materials into its theatrical framework. Cell phone videos and projections of newsreels remind us of offstage events that had untold effects upon millions of lives. The British characters stream into the Jungle after August of 2015, when a viral video of a drowned Syrian boy, washing up on the shores of Turkey, horrified the world. We bear witness to the aftershocks of the November 13, 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, and the resulting Islamophobic and xenophobic response by the news media. But The Jungle is also a thrilling piece of epic theater. Like Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht or Suzan-Lori Parks, the creative team utilizes the full range of theatrical effects: song, dance, direct address, poetic monologues, and dialogue combine to tell multiple, overlapping stories. It is a dramaturgy designed to encourage empathy, to teach perspective, to balance out the needs of the one with the lives of the many. In content as well as form, Shakespeare was familiar with these stories. One of the only pieces of writing thought to be in Shakespeare’s hand is from the manuscript to Sir Thomas More. This unfinished play dramatizes the refugee crisis of 1517, when Londoners reacted with hatred to people fleeing the mainland, once again through Calais. In an extraordinary speech, Shakespeare asks us to recognize the crisis, and the opportunity: Imagine that you see the wretched strangers, Their babies at their backs and their poor luggage, Plodding to the ports and coasts for transportation, And that you sit as kings in your desires [...] “This is the strangers’ case,” he concludes, “And this your mountainish inhumanity.” These words, written in 1604, could have been written today. Now more than ever we have to stand together. Good chance may soon be no chance.

Learn More Voices from ‘The Jungle’: Stories from the Calais Refugee Camp (2017)

Border Crossings: My Journey as a Western Muslim (2021)

In this moving collection of individual testimonies, Calais refugees tell their powerful and vivid stories, offering their memories up with stunning honesty. Childhood dreams and struggles for education; the genocides, wars, and persecution that drove them from home; the simultaneous terror and strength that filled their extraordinary journeys; the realities of living in the Calais refugee camp; and their deepest hopes for the future remind readers that no matter our history, we are all uniquely human.

Whether negotiating the mind-games of the Israeli intelligence services or performing ablutions in a London bathroom, Mohammad Chowdhury’s life as a British Muslim travelling the world brings daily challenges. Gripping in some parts and shameinducing in others, as he describes a lifelong struggle to reconcile the British, Asian and Muslim sides of his identity, constantly dealing with the mistrust of Westerners alongside the hypocrisies of his own community and their misunderstandings of Islam.

What Is a Refugee? (2019)

Hamid & Shakespeare (2023)

Who are refugees? Why are they called that word? Why do they need to leave their country? Why are they sometimes not welcome in their new country? In this relevant picture book for the youngest children, authorillustrator Elise Gravel explores what it means to be a refugee in bold, graphic illustrations and spare text. This is the perfect tool to introduce an important and timely topic to children.

Good Chance ensemble artist and previous resident of the Jungle, Majid Adin, writes and illustrates his debut graphic novel inspired by an imaginary friendship between Shakespeare and a young refugee. From light to dark and back again, it’s a relationship of humor, exasperation and great humanity as Shakespeare and Hamid become the guides to each other’s worlds, both father and son, and teacher and student.

The Kitchen without Borders: Recipes and Stories from Refugee and Immigrant Chefs (2021)

The Calais Sessions (2016)

More than a collection of delicious foods from around the world, this inspiring cookbook- with its intimate chef profiles and photographic portraits-offers a glimpse into the journey of displaced people and highlights the profound link between food and home. With over 70 authentic and surprising recipes, the food (and the chefs) celebrate the culinary traditions of Syria, Iran, Eritrea, Venezuela, and more.

From the raw Syrian folk song to the nectar-sweet Ethiopian gospel lullaby, and the clannish Sudanese drum circle to the most infectious Afghan pop, Europe has been bestowed a treasure chest of rich and exotic cultural heritage. The Calais Sessions, written and recorded entirely within a makeshift studio in the Jungle, centers the voices and stories of the refugees behind the headlines.

The Hungry Road (2016) Documentary-maker Bairbre Flood spent over four months in the Calais refugee camps, hearing the stories of the refugees housed there. If we’re going to come up with humane solutions, she says, why not start by challenging the prevailing language for displaced people? Asylum Speakers Podcast with Jaz O'Hara: Stories of Migration Episode 5 - “Crossing the Sahara, the Sea and the Calais Jungle at 13 years old: The Story of my Eritrean Foster Brother Mez” (2019) Join host Jaz O’Hara and hear from the people leaving their countries and everything behind them, volunteers working alongside them, those currently living in refugee camps, and people working on the front line. In this specific episode, O’Hara’s foster brother, Mez, shares his story of resilience and survival. From fleeing compulsory military service in his home country when he was 13, to crossing the Sahara Desert and not eating for 15 days. From his boat capsizing in the Mediterranean Sea to hiding underneath the Eurotunnel train to get to the UK. Beauty of a Stateless Mind (2019) Meet the filmmakers, illustrators, calligraphers, dancers, and dreamers of the Calais refugee camp. Directed by Lutia Swan-Hutton, this short film is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of documentaries from independent creators.
