THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - October 26, 2014

Today’s Gospel Reflection: Matthew 22:34-40 LOVE SHOWN IN ACTION Do you receive the word of God with joy as the Thessalonians did? Their faith showed in their actions. They became models for other believers. The first reading tells us to put our faith into action. This passage is part of a long list of ordinances God commanded the Israelites to observe. God will judge us by how we treat our neighbors. God will hear the cries of any whom we neglect or mistreat and will come to their defense. In today’s Gospel the Pharisees put the question of God’s law to Jesus. “Which commandment of the law is the greatest?” (Matthew 22:36) How could he possibly choose from all the detailed commandments the Jews observed? He was sure to offend somebody by his answer! Of course, Jesus went right to the heart of the matter. Love is the greatest commandment—love of God and love of neighbor. Everything else is based on this. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK RELATIVES AND FRIENDS. PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY “Go, therefore, and make disciples from all nations. Baptize them in the Name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to fulfill all that I have commanded you. I am with you always until the end of this world.” - Matthew 28:19-20

Priests are Christian disciples. Their role in the Church is to teach, preach, and to witness to the God of Jesus Christ’s call to holiness. By their faithful teaching, preaching and witness, the whole Church community grows in its mission to the God of Love in the world. Their service to our parish is a sacrifice. By sacrifice, we mean, priests give their very selves in order that the whole Church might continue to further Christ’s mission left to the Church. We, the community of St. María Goretti, are very blessed and thankful for our priests, and celebrate them especially on this Priesthood Sunday. May God continue to bless our priests, Fathers Francisco, Michael, Arthur, and John, in your ministry to our parish and to all of our Church. Thank you all for your presence in our Community!

WHOLEHEARTED esus insists that all religious rules, the witness of prophets and saints, and every aspect of faith rests entirely on wholehearted love of God, and loving others as ourselves. A woman named Carla could not sleep one night. Restless, she opened her Bible and came upon these two greatest commandments. She realized, guiltily, how many things displaced God in her life. She hid behind baggy clothes and believed herself not good enough. Carla’s parents had emphasized sin and a harshly judgmental God. Carla saw that the commandment was to love God, love neighbor, love self. The common thread was love, not sin, unworthiness, or judgment. Next morning Carla read the words again. Jesus said “love your neighbor as yourself.” Carla equated self-love with selfish pride. She had to understand love in a new way. So began a new path for Carla. She prayed gratefully every day for God’s love and blessings. Step by step, she changed. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Thoughts on Giving The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches heaven.” - Sirach 35:16 Throughout sacred scripture we are reminded that it is not enough to just love the Lord. We also must serve Him. Yet, scripture also promises that those who serve the Lord will be rewarded. God will hear the prayer of the good steward.

Stewardship Renewal Begins Today!! As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are continuously both challenged and given opportunities to adopt Stewardship as a Way of Life in more meaningful ways. When we adopt a positive “attitude of gratitude” for all the many gifts God has given us, we are better able to use our gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure to serve one another. When we share our gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure in a manner that is intentional, active and generous, we are doing our part to help build the Kingdom of God here on earth. This year, the theme for our annual Stewardship Renewal is “Building Upon Our Past; Charting Our Future.” As we begin our annual Stewardship Renewal, and as we hear more about Stewardship as a Way of Life, let us all prayerfully consider how we all might more meaningfully offer our time, talent and treasure to build God’s Kingdom among us. The four pillars of Stewardship: Prayer, Formation, Hospitality, Service

IN THE VOTING BOOTH Catholics in Political Life By our baptism, Catholics are committed to following Jesus Christ and to be "salt for the earth, light for the nations." As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate, according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This is inherent in the dignity of the human person ... As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” (nos. 1913-1915). United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

SHOULD CATHOLICS CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN?

T

he word Halloween is a contraction for All Hallows Eve, which, before the reform of the liturgical calendar following the Second Vatican Council, was the vigil of All Saints and All Souls Days. As such, Halloween can be considered a Christian holiday. As with many Christian holidays, the secular world has attached its own traditions to the day (costumes, trick-or-treating, parties) that are not intrinsically wrong but can become problematic when the religious meaning of the holiday is set aside or forgotten. Celebrated in the right way, Halloween can be a reminder of human mortality and the need for Christians to prepare themselves to face God. The festivities attached to the holiday can—like Mardi Gras for Lent—prepare Christians for All Saints and All Souls Days and for the month of November, which the Church traditionally has set aside for remembrance of the souls in purgatory. Celebrated in the wrong way, Halloween festivities also can distract from the meaning of the holiday. Christian parents have a variety of options for celebrating the holiday in a Christian spirit and should feel free to choose what works best for helping their families learn the "reason for the sea(Source: Michelle Arnold, Catholic Answers Apologist) son."

NOVEMBER 2 DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS. Turn clocks back one hour.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sadly, one of the most difficult reforms of the Second Vatican Council for the Church to embrace has been one of the most thorough and beautiful: the sacrament of penance. Because it is individual and private, it has been difficult for the changes to take root. Sometimes a priest may be grounded in the earlier form, and at other times the penitent may resist the priest’s attempt to blend in the proper texts and rituals. Perhaps because the new form is almost identical in structure to the old, it has been difficult to insititute. It may also be true that with the liturgy in English now, it is far more clear that the Eucharist, too, is a “sacrament of reconciliation.” It is certainly true that there are different skills and gifts in ministry, and experienced penitents know that not all priests are equally at ease in this sacramental encounter. Sometimes a difficult experience can drive people away from a liturgy that is spiritually rich and rewarding. Yet we know that one bad meal seldom puts people off restaurants forever: the dinner gong tends to dispel bad memories, and so we try again. Individual confession and absolution is for us both treasure and tradition. If you haven’t been for a while, consider coming back to praise God for this gift of mercy. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HEALTH CORNER Food Allergies - Common food allergens include eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts such as almonds, pecans and walnuts and wheat. Childhood allergies to eggs, milk, soy and wheat are commonly outgrown but peanut allergies are almost never outgrown. Only about six to eight percent of children have true food allergies. It is important to have a physician diagnose a suspected food allergy.

HUMOR The Sunday School Teacher asks: “Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?” “No Sir,” Johnny replies, “I don’t have to.

¿Somos unos buenos corresponsables? ¿Estamos ayudando a nuestra Iglesia y a obras caritativas?

Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
