CONTRIBUTORS We asked our contributors for this issue what their POWER WORD for 2023 is and here’s what they have chosen to guide and inspire them this year:

Over the years, A TASTE OF RIYADH (@atasteofriyadh) has developed a finer sense of tasting which enabled her to fairly rate the food she eats and share her experiences. She chose the word CONTENTMENT because there are countless reasons to feel content, especially when working towards her greater goals in life.

DQL’s resident fitness fanatic, MOHAMMED AMEENUDDIN (@ameen_amster) is building up his 2023 with his guiding word AUGMENT: no more just following the flow, but focusing on exponential growth instead.

IQRA LODHI (@iqlodhi) is a biotech engineer and a mom of two boys. Juggling her tasks every day, she still aims to focus on her personal health, happiness, and knowledge. Thus, her power word for 2023 is SELFHOOD. Working positively on herself is her lifelong project.

DANIELLE O’CONNOR (@growingupsaudi) is a veteran American educator living in Riyadh with her Saudi husband and children. She has a lengthy list of things she wants to achieve professionally and personally. AMBITION will be her springboard to success for 2023.

THE PINK TARHA (@thepinktarha) is a pioneering, award-winning lifestyle blog by Janelle Vales Yasay and Reina Tejano Berina. They chose the word, BE. To remind themselves that there is peace in letting things be and just living in the moment.

LAURINE GAYLE VALES, DQL’s project coordinator, wishes to be able to adjust better to life’s constant changes. Her power word, ADAPT, is for the happenings and challenges that will come her way so that she can keep moving forward.

Having lived and worked in 30+ countries, PALAVI KELE (@sojourn_in_saudi) is a curious traveler and blogger. Her appreciation for culture made her choose the word INTEGRATE because as expats, we are given the chance to integrate into the Saudi culture.

SALMA SIDDIQUA (@thevoyagersoul_) is a medical doctor, foodie, and adventurer. She welcomes the new year with her power word GRATITUDE, a sense that what is given is sacred and transient, passing in time into the eternal cycles of living.

DQL columnist and award-winning writer ALEXANDER WOODMAN regularly discusses global health challenges and diplomacy. The author of @thelandofadat chose the word EXUBERANCE, the highest level of respect for life, which certainly inspires him.

HEALTHY TO A TEE DQ LIVING STAFF The weather is just right again to return to the golf course. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned player, golf has its amazing benefits for your body and mind. In your quest to be fit and strong this year, may the course be with you.

DQ LIVING MAGAZINE JAN-FEB 2023

FEATURE Golf is a fascinating game; a sport that is rich in tradition and history. Most of us think of it as a passive game that doesn’t give much room for exercise. However, golf is more exercise than you think and it’s a tee-rific activity to hit a hole in one in your fitness goals this year. THE R&A, a leading body within the world of golf, has published a new golf and health report* that shows the physical and mental benefits of golf. Since 2016, R&A and its partners have sought to raise awareness of the health benefits of gold to encourage people of all ages to participate in the sport. According to the study, the health benefits of playing golf are significant: it allows golfers to enjoy a form of exercise and boosts mental wellbeing in a social environment. As a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, abilities, and background, golf, as a physical activity, can help prevent and treat over 40 major chronic diseases including diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. The study found that on average, golfers live five years longer than non-golfers.

Golf presents golfers and even spectators the opportunity to engage in moderate intensity physical activity. There is a certain amount of cardiovascular activity that is involved in golf just by walking the course. Most courses are spread over multiple acres of flat and hilly grounds. Provided, of course, you forgo the golf cart and leg it from one green to another. Swinging a club and lifting golf bags also train your strength and work your muscles. Golf also helps balance your body and build a strong core. The sport also needs a great amount of focus and concentration and so it does not only exercise your body but also your brain. Golf is a great all-around way to exercise both the body and the mind. Fortunately, Saudi Arabia has active golf courses where you can practice and play. Golf Saudi, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Saudi Golf Federation tasked with developing the game of golf in the Kingdom, has listed the active golf courses where you can play in Saudi Arabia.

GET FIT TOGETHER DQ LIVING STAFF To help with your fitness goals this year, join a group that will encourage, motivate and support you. Whether that be hiking or running together, playing games in groups, or just discussing essential issues, a like-minded community will bring out the best in you. It’s great to make a fitness goal and resolution on your own but it’s also a great idea to work out with a group of people that share the same vision and goals. Joining a group adds a layer of accountability which will be a good reason for motivation. Surrounding yourself with people who can boost your confidence and encourage you is not only good for your physical health but also good for your mental and social life. Riyadh has a lot of groups that get together to achieve common goals. A supportive like-minded community like RWG will surely help you. This year, the RWG community will focus on building relationships with their members across all activities. For them, the best place to hike in Riyadh is the Diplomatic Quarter. The DQ provides many beautiful wadis in the heart of Riyadh.

Look around you and you can see a developing appreciation for the arts, a wide array of entertainment options, and a rapidly changing education sector that is making enormous strides to nurture and grow the next generation of internationally competitive and globally minded students. No longer is education a concern for expat parents as the educational landscape of Saudi transitions to a diverse, competitive and, most importantly, high quality sector.

The world of education in the Kingdom has been on a blazing path in the last few years and is only accelerating. Parents have a plethora of choices in everything from quality, curriculum, culture, language, examinations, co-curricular options, and student life. What was once a very small pool of choice for expats mainly based on nationality has since become a diverse and motley sector of international brands.

In order to achieve the ambitions behind Vision 2030, the Royal Commission of Riyadh City in partnership with the Ministry of Investment has pursued attractive names and options for expat parents in Riyadh who have long desired education that mirrors the standard of their home countries. Riyadh is finally answering that call. Under the banner of making Riyadh one of the most livable cities in the world, the RCRC has established part-

nerships with some of the best global international school brands. Besides livability, the school attraction program strives to ensure that young Saudis and expatriate children have access to the opportunities that lead to global competitiveness. “As part of our city’s strategy to enhance the education sector, our partnership with the Ministry of Education along with the Ministry of Investment reflects commitment to providing education and learning opportunities for Saudi and foreign students. Also, this step comes in line with the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030, and RCRC’s strategy to build on Riyadh’s position as the regional economic powerhouse in becoming one of the world’s top ten cities, and one of the most prominent in quality of life, tourism, and services by 2030,” said HE Mr. Fahd Bin Abdulmohsen Bin Saleh Al-Rasheed, RCRC CEO. Schools coming to the Kingdom were selected based on a number of selective criteria including global reputation, a focus on 21st century skills, innovation programs, academic results, notable alumni, and academic results. One of the most prestigious names in UK education, King’s College, was the first to open under the commission’s support in historic Diriyah. King’s graduates are amongst some of the most accomplished in the world including world leaders, Nobel laureates, Olympians, and global changemakers. With more than 140 years of experience, King’s has a host of values including the spirit of self-respect, partnership, and the importance of contributing. DO TOP 5 SENSORY PLAY IDEAS TO ENJOY WITH YOUR KIDS IQRA SULTANA LODHI Overstimulated little humans need simplistic activities that pique their senses and bring about a calmness to their nifty hands and frazzled minds. ‘Tis the time of the year again, when the world is winding down, winter is all around and adults and children alike are looking forward to spending their time indoors tucked safely within the warmth of their homes. This is a great time to build family bonds, play, gather around the warm hearths (heaters!), eat, and make merry. The long dark wintry nights are perfect for movie nights, art days, reading marathons, game nights, and more.

2

Sensory play is a form of play wherein the five senses- touch, hearing, sight, smell, and taste are stimulated to create, explore, play, and learn. Sensory play is extremely helpful when it comes to picky eaters; the different food textures help toddlers warm up to varied food items.

Some great ideas are: • Slime or oobleck creation using household items like cornstarch and hair conditioner. • Play dough kneading and molding using rolling pins and cookie cutters. • Hide tiny toys in a pit of Kinetic Sand and let your child excavate for treasure within. • On a sunny day, take your child to the beach and spend a beautiful afternoon playing in the sand and building sand castles. You could also take them to indoor sand pits with their beach toys in tow.

Here are five sensory play ideas and activities that you can enjoy with your bundles of joy!

Play Dough and Sand Play Kids love to get their hands dirty with play dough, clay, slime, and sand. Even though the aftermath does get stressful sometimes, no worries because this activity is great for their cognitive and muscle development. It is therapeutic and encourages creativity. Concepts dealing with science, math and arts are strengthened with the help of such activities.

Water Play Children are obsessed with splashing, jumping, and playing in and with water in general. They can spend a good thirty minutes or more just pouring and playing with water and thirty minutes is eternity in parent language. It encourages social development, discussions, research and emotional aptitude in kids. “Jumping up and down in muddy puddles” sings Peppa Pig and it is an anthem for the children of this generation. No rain, no issue! Here are a few activities to enjoy with your babies.

•P oster paints and shower walls are perfect for a fun day indoors. Grab paints and brushes and let the children create art on the bath walls. Easy to clean and a happy mommy! • Provide children with funnels, tubs, mugs, droppers and colored water. Let them pour, play, mix colors, and create. It’s great for concentration and motor skills.

4

Sound Play Auditory play helps kids learn voice modulations and sound limits. Music is used as a therapeutic tool in kids and adults alike. The development of a child’s hearing starts in the womb itself and continues to develop well through adulthood. Following are a few auditory sensory activities•D o a shared activity with your kids by listening to music and audio books. • Make rainbow bottle shakers using empty plastic bottles and colorful rice/pompoms/salt/sand. • Learning to play musical instruments • Participating in musical chairs

5

Olfactory Sensory Play Play using the sense of smell can be used as a calming tool in children. Smell can be alerting or calming to the nervous system. Children can learn how to differentiate amongst varied smells and categorize faint and strong smells. •M ake aroma pots with a variety of essencescinnamon, vanilla, eucalyptus, lavender and more. • Home-made play dough with cinnamon and other fragrances. • Play a smell differentiation game where kids can categorize the given smells according to their strong and faint strength.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER: 1. When using rice or dough to make taste-safe material, make sure you bake it for a while to kill microorganisms. 2. Invest in huge bins or containers to store colorful rice, sand, salt and play dough. If stored properly, these can last years. 3. Do not worry about the mess! Messy is awesome! Spread a cloth/plastic sheet and enjoy. 4. Shaving gels, hair conditioners, cornstarch, baking soda, vinegar are essential components of sensory play. Sensory play is a part of the Montessori education system and encourages motor skills, handto-eye coordination, cognitive development, literacy and gives children the opportunity to explore and discover their surroundings. COLUMN FITNESS IS FITNESS A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION? MOHAMMED AMEENUDDIN When a new year rolls in, 9 out of 10 new year’s resolutions will have “fitness” in them. It may be losing weight, getting more fit, hitting a specific weight goal… the list goes on. But should fitness be added as a resolution every year or should it be a daily part of our lives just like all other chores and tasks?

New Year’s resolutions are notorious for having fitness goals included, but within the first quarter of the year, it’s common to hear people falling off the course and giving up. Why does this happen?

Why are fitness resolutions short lived? In the world of instant noodles, we try to find instant results for our fitness goals. Gaining weight does not happen overnight and likewise, losing it cannot be just as fast.

From what I’ve noticed, many people take their health for granted and focus more on other goals and resolutions. Even though some people say health is a priority, they don’t put the necessary time into maintaining it.

Following a fad diet starting January 1st can be difficult to maintain and may lead to giving up on a yearlong self-promise to stay active and fit. Some of us develop high expectations without thinking through what will be required on a daily basis and our actual capacity to do what is necessary to meet our expectations. Another reason for short-lived new year's resolutions is making them too general. SMART goals or resolutions can help us achieve bet-

While we strive to improve in other aspects of our lives, I believe that we should make our health our number one priority over other goals and resolutions.

ter results. SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. How to stick to your fitness resolutions all year long? First, try to keep in mind that staying active and healthy is the best way to enjoy all areas of life. Health is wealth! Our body is designed to move and be in action. Here are a few tips that have helped me keep to my fitness resolutions and may help you too. •S et small initial targets. Hitting a target can give us motivation to continue. • Make sure to include rest days in your plan. •It’s not about falling off track, it’s how quickly you get back on. Not all our days go according to plan, and that’s ok. Get back on track as soon as you can. • Make a plan that works best for you and doesn’t clash with your other commitments. Not a morning person? Maybe 5am workouts aren’t your best bet. • Track your progress so that you become accountable. • Plan fitness in advance and for the whole week so that you can play your days around it. The final factor to consider is patience. Physical changes will not appear overnight. Commitment and consistency will lead to effective results and once you see the results, it is more likely to become part of your life. Happy new year and I hope we all can be very active in 2023 and keep our fitness resolutions a priority.

5 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO BOOST YOUR HEART SALMA SIDDIQUA As the calendar flips to 2023, you’ve made some resolutions to guide the way. Maybe it’s a pledge to eat healthier, exercise more, or drop a few pounds. If you want to make your vows really count this year, then let’s think how you can get into the heart of the matter!

1

Good nutrition, optimal exercise and healthy heart goes hand in hand. The right lifestyle changes make all the difference. High levels of LDL cholesterol can damage your arteries, put you at greater risk for heart disease, heart attack, increase your risk of stroke and arterial blockages — so if your doctor tells you to lower your bad cholesterol, it’s time to do it!

Achieve your ideal weight. The no.1 goal that most of us make is the first one we break. But think of the benefits you’ll reap if you could make steady progress in that area of your life. When you are overweight or obese, you increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and blood clots.

There are ways to manage high cholesterol, and the wonderful news is that heart disease is 90% preventable. Even if you have a significant family history of high cholesterol, you can prevent heart disease.

To help keep your resolution, focus on lifestyle modification instead of going on a fad diet. There are many apps for your phone or tablet that can help you track your food intake and exercise. And it helps to understand your triggers so you can avoid them. Ask yourself: do you eat more when you’re stressed, bored or in a social setting?

If you stick to these goals, you may just sail into next year with a healthier heart.

2

Get an annual checkup Aside from ensuring that you have no major health problems, a physical exam allows your doctor to keep tabs on your blood pressure and glucose level, and discuss physical activity, smoking and eating habits. Both men and women should get annual physicals to better focus on heart-health risk modification.

3

Reduce stress in your life. Stress is, unfortunately, an unavoidable fact of life. Stress sickness can contribute to many health issues, including: anxiety, poor sleep, Irritability, not being able to concentrate, trouble getting your work done, substance abuse problems, and poor food choices. Highly anxious people are most likely to suffer from heart attack or stroke. Make time in your day to do things that help you relax. Try meditation, talking with friends, getting outside for a walk, reading a book, or exercising.

4

Get more sleep. Not getting enough sleep can lead to overeating, heart failure, hypertension and atrial fibrillation. Having less sleep consistently can increase blood pressure and

cause inflammation. To get more zzzs, don’t use your phone before bedtime and cut back on caffeine. As a rule of thumb, sleep psychologists recommend to keep your bedroom at 60 to 67F and to think of your bedroom as your cave. It should be cool, dark and quiet to enhance your sleep.

5

Follow a heart healthy diet. Good nutrition and a healthy heart go hand in hand. Following a heart-healthy diet can help reduce your total cholesterol and bad (or LDL) cholesterol, lower your blood sugars and triglycerides, and decrease your blood pressure. According to AHA American Heart Association, a heart healthy diet focuses on vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, lean animal protein, and fish. Dieticians recommend to aim for a combined seven to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day: roughly 4 or greater for vegetables and two to four for fruits. Lastly, if you resolve to make yourself healthier this year, talk to your doctor about ways to trim down, be more active and relax. You know in your heart those are all resolutions you can live (longer) with. So, here’s to a better you in a new year. Good luck!

5 QUIRKY NEW YEAR’S EVE TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD PALAVI KELE While the Turks sprinkle salt on their doorstep, the Greeks hang onions! Armenians bake a special bread with a secret ingredient and Danes jump off a chair at midnight! Join me on a fun ride across the globe to ring in the New Year. New Year’s Eve is one of the largest global celebrations marking the last day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. Although not all cultures celebrate with festivities on the 31st December, the majority of people from around the world take time to reflect upon their past year and plan for the upcoming one. But hang on, before you get thinking about your New Year resolutions, let me teleport you to different parts of the globe to join in some unique NYE traditions and rituals. I wish I could find out how all 197 countries of the world celebrate this day but until then, here are some of my favorites:

PERU As per Peruvian traditions, friends and family gift each other a specific-colored underwear symbolizing different wishes – yellow for luck, red for love, green for money and so on. The idea is for the receiver to wear it before the stroke of midnight. My Peruvian friend mentioned how she has a fun

memory of running around her neighborhood with twenty cousins, uncles and aunties strolling an empty suitcase in the hopes of a travel-filled year. A similar ritual is observed in other Latin American cultures. Eating exactly 12 grapes for each of the twelve bell strikes after midnight and making 12 wishes to bring good fortune is yet another NYE tradition observed in many Spanish speaking cultures.

COLUMN CULTURE GERMANY Germans celebrate Sylvester by cheering ‘Prosit Neujahr’ and sipping Sekt (German sparkling wine) while watching the fireworks. I have a vivid memory of celebrating this day with my German host family many years ago on a table decorated with tiny pink glass pigs (a symbol of good luck) and watching the classic comedy German short film from the 60s called ‘Dinner for One’ on the TV. Another interesting tradition is for each member at the table to melt candle wax and drop it in cold water. It is believed that the shape it takes determines the person’s fate for next year. A fun guessing game indeed.

JAPAN In the Japanese culture, it is customary to welcome the new year with a bowl of Toshikoshi soba noodles. It is believed that the soba's thin shape and long length signifies a long and healthy life. As the legend goes, back in the days, goldsmiths used fine soba flour to collect stray gold dust or gold lacquer, as it picked up the gold easily. Through this ritual, eating soba is said to bring gold to the household in the coming year.

BRAZIL Every New Year's Eve, Brazilians throw white flowers into the sea from the shore. This tradition stems from the Afro-Brazilian religions of Candomblé and Umbanda to pay respects and seek blessings from Lemanjá –the deity of the sea. Locals, dressed up in white clothing (symbolic of peace and spiritual purification) gather by the shore and make seven wishes by jumping over seven consecutive waves. The New Year in Brazil is guided by the motto ‘Ano novo, vida nova,” meaning “New year, new life.”

PHILIPPINES If there’s one word to describe NYE festivities in the Philippines, it’s the ‘circle’. The shape symbolizes coins and money and is believed to attract wealth and fortune. As a result, locals lay out a colorful table with twelve or more round fruits. They also extend this fun tradition to their clothes and wear polka dots! Do take a moment to ask your multicultural friends if they have any family traditions to welcome the New Year. Who knows, you may end up with a big basket of quirky traditions just like I did!

COLUMN LIFESTYLE TOP 5 TO-DOS THIS WINTER THE PINK TARHA Do you snuggle, er, struggle, to survive Riyadh’s winter days? As residents of a country that has most of its months on “summer mode”, we welcome the cool days during this time of the year and we make the most of it. After all, it’s a winterful, er, wonderful life!

In our column on a DQ Living issue in 2020, we listed down some activities you can do to enjoy the winter days in Riyadh (read “Winter Has Come” at dqliving.com). While this season makes us want to lie in bed all day long, reminisce in its late dawns, and just sip hot chocolates in the comfort of our warm homes, there are reasons to forgo stilling ourselves and instead get up and enjoy the cool days. We’re updating our list of winter activities to include some things new, heartwarming, and fun.

1

Keep your stomachs warm with “Asian fondue.” In need of a hearty, heartwarming soup to keep you warm? Look no further than the hot pot (or hotpot), a pot of steaming broth or soup that is continuously simmering while a variety of foodstuffs and ingredients are added. This cooking method originated in China and the dining table has a heat source that keeps the soup stock, whether it’s the simple clear broth or the fiery spicy one, hot. Typical hot pot ingredients include thinly-sliced meat, seafood, mushrooms, and vegetables. You can mix your own sauce from the bar. We suggest sesame paste with oyster sauce,

38

sesame oil, crushed peanuts, garlic paste and fermented bean paste with a dash of vinegar, soy, and spring onions. Don’t forget noodles and rice! This is perfect for groups! Try this at Hala Hot, Hot Pot, or Riyadh Chinese Restaurant.

Enjoy a stroll in the park (in Riyadh governorate). You’ve probably visited most parks in the Diplomatic Quarter already and the known parks in Riyadh center like Olaya Park, King Fahd Library Park, and An Nafal Park. This winter, the Riyadh Municipality has announced a winter initiative in 10 locations within the scope of the governorate to provide unique social experiences in public parks every weekend. Apart from just walking or strolling in these areas, there will be open markets that display products from locals. This is a social experience that will try to connect and integrate sustainable communities in Riyadh province. Activated parks include Uyaynah Park in the Jubailah Governorate, Alshaba Garden in Alkharj, and King Fahd Park in Sudair Municipality. More details at twitter.com/amatalriyadh.

3

Have a good cup of coffee (with unique desserts). With the mushrooming of so many cafés in Riyadh, it’s not just enough to have a good cup of coffee to attract customers. It should be paired with not-so-basic sweets and desserts that are not found everywhere. Thankfully, some coffeeshops have been creative! Now, we can enjoy the perfect pairing of black coffee, cappuccino, latte, etc. with the perfect decadent sweets. Just A Space (@justaspace.sa) is currently attracting long lines with their crème brulee and waffle sticks. LOUD (@ loud.sa) has chimney cake (with ice cream if you want). Chök (@chok.ksa) has elevated cronuts filled and topped with creams and fruits. ELCT (@elct.sa) has warm chestnuts!

4

Savor the good “IG-worthy” outdoors. Camping is best done in winter when you won’t feel the brunt of the sun in your skin. However, not all of us are knowledgeable when it comes to camping. So why not spend a few hours under the night sky in coffee “camps” in Thumamah? The area is filled with IG-worthy café camps and simple eateries that will call the desert home during these wintry months. It's far from the city center but that’s the point: to get away for a few hours and enjoy a relaxing ambiance away from it all. Thumamah is also home to a lot of camps and tents so if you want to stay overnight, it’s a great place for that too. Dark Vanilla Café (@darkvanilla.sa) is gracing the Riyadh desert with their scrumptious desserts while beside it is Crispish (@crispishksa), a chicken burger shop that has one of the best chicken lollipops in Riyadh! A few kilometers away is the camp with Half A Million Coffee (@halfmillion_ sa) and Key Café (@keycafe.sa).

5

Visit new places. Of course, the Riyadh Season zones are still the best places to visit for fun and entertainment in Riyadh. However, if you want to escape the crowd, Riyadh has some hidden gems that you can go to. For indoor activities, visit exhibits like Tales of Nostalgia at the Misk Insitute, The Line Exhibition and From Spark to Spirit (both at the Jax District in Diriyah). For outdoor activities, visit the Reef Café (@reefcafe.sa) which features a farm and mini zoo or Mirzam x Najdarah (@mirzam_sa), a unique restaurant with water landscaping at AlAmmariyah. *Mentioned @ are Instagram account handles.

EAT According to the Kanji definition of the word Kayzo, it is a place where many people gather; a place where the ocean and the ground meet. It is most fitting to the atmosphere that Kayzo DQ has created with what was once a pop-up restaurant venue in Oud Square. Rooted from its upper class flagship restaurant, Myazu, Kayzo was created to provide a more casual dining experience. Particularly to the residents of the Diplomatic Quarter who would prefer a nearby location that offers a quick bite for lunch or a wonderful dinner for the family without breaking the bank or getting stuck in traffic.

Inside the restaurant are deep hues of blue and browns, reminiscent of the colors of the land and sea. The tableware is noticeably beautiful with earthen serving dishes that were minimalist in nature but pleasing to touch and use. There are comfortable sofa seatings and wide open windows; almost like a large, elegant living room that can entertain a number of guests. Compared to Myazu, there is no dress code requirement at Kayzo. Feel free to come as you are, whether from a long day at work or from a simple walk around the DQ. Kids are most welcome here and they pride themselves in being a family-friendly restaurant. The staff will usher you in with their warm smiles and cordial hospitality.

EAT Kayzo’s menu is designed for small plates to share (sharing concept) with a broader spectrum of choices, hence a table of two or more can enjoy a variety of dishes that they can share. Items like the Popcorn Shrimp, Prawn Chilli Garlic Gyoza, and Marinated Yellowtail are great options for a light and straightforward appetizer; while the Baos and Maki selections make for a slightly heavier bite with the Japanese Beef Sando and Smoked Eel Maki - both exuding bolder and memorable flavors and textures.

Chips, which makes use of the Najil fillet that is exclusive to the Red Sea and the Black Cod with Miso that is a classic Japanese recipe.

They intend to introduce new items in the menu on a regular basis. Currently, one of the highlights of their main course menu is their rendition of Kimchi Fried Rice where they have taken a Wagyu short rib and smoked it and added to Japanese rice mixed with kimchi and a sunny side up egg in the middle. It is foremost a visually appealing dish and the meat will melt in your mouth like butter. The kimchi and pepper mix gives it its umami note and the mushroom used adds to the flair of it in every bite. For other main course options, there’s also the Tempura Fish and

Their dessert variety is kept modest with just the Date Cake, Warm Miso Cookie and Mochi selection to choose from. All three though is a sufficiently sweet way to end any meal.

For drinks, the Japanese Mint Refresher lives up to its name with the mixture of yuzu and lemon juice, rose water, ginger syrup, and mint. The Melon Kyuri is a new item on the menu made with fresh cantaloupe, cucumber, and peach soda. There’s also a variety of hot beverages such as Black Cherry Tea and Sencha Tea to name a few.

For a classy yet affordable dining experience, Kayzo is a fitting choice for your next gathering. With a convenient distance to the residences and business in the DQ, a menu that does not compromise on flavor and creativity, and a welcoming atmosphere to family and friends, it’s simply waiting for you to meet it.

DQ QUICK EATS A TASTE OF RIYADH The Diplomatic Quarter is now home to more than thirty restaurants and cafes, and it is often difficult to choose where to eat. Here’s a list of my personal favorites that will hopefully guide you in answering life’s greatest dilemma: what to eat.

There is quite a wide range of restaurants and cuisines in the neighborhood, but based on personal experiences, there are numerous ones that stand out among the others for several reasons like taste, quality, and consistency. I curated a list of places that fall into different categories and will give you zero regrets in eating your way through the neighborhood.

KINDI PLAZA Burgeration’s Wagyu Special and French Fries When I want to indulge in a treat for dinner, I head to Burgeration. I love how the components of the burger are proportionate to each other; you get a bite of everything, and it’s not overwhelming. I usually skip French fries at restaurants, but theirs are not to be missed; they are perfectly salted, spiced, crispy, and not too greasy.

Raw.k’s Honey Mustard Chicken Wrap Raw.k is most known for their healthy food, especially for people who need an on-the-go meal. I like their honey mustard chicken wrap because it’s packed with a generous amount of chicken, along with arugula, avocado, tomato, and honey mustard sauce. The wrap tastes great, and is overall wholesome.

RECOMMEND OUD SQUARE Wacafe’s Hasawi Cookie and Coffee The Hasawi cookie is one of the best cookies I’ve had in Riyadh. The base of the cookie is perfectly soft and chewy, and is elevated with ingredients from Al-Hasaa in the Eastern Province, which include fennel, black seeds, and dates! It pairs well with a hot cup of coffee.

Urth Caffe’s Kale Caravan Salad Urth Caffe is one of the few places that beautifully prepares kale; ridding it of its tough texture and making eating healthy and delicious a breeze. The salad is composed of ingredients such as sweet potato and quinoa, which give it great sustenance. It is evenly dressed with a balanced vinaigrette, which ties the salad together.

@wacafecoffee @urthcaffesaudi Dolce Ragusa’s Pastries and Hot Chocolate I appreciate the authenticity of their Italian pastries, especially with ricotta filling. I don’t usually enjoy sweets, but the sweetness of their pastries is subtle, the quality is fantastic, and the taste is exquisite. During the winter, I consider their hot chocolate an essential; it’s rich and decadent, and perfect to keep warm.

LITTLE RIYADH Joe and the Juice’s Spicy Tuna Sandwich I believe their thin and crispy bread is what makes the sandwiches more special; adding a variety of texture and making room for more filling. I recommend their spicy tuna sandwich, which is one of their most popular items.

@dolceragusa @joeandthejuiceksa

Fortunately, the mentioned places are in close proximity to each other. Whether you’re looking for healthy options, want to indulge, or simply want an afternoon coffee and pasty, this list won’t disappoint.

EMBASSY OF FINLAND CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY ALEXANDER WOODMAN The Embassy of Finland celebrated their 105th anniversary of independence. Built on trust, Finland participates in international dialogue and always seeks solutions through cooperation, making the country resilient and reliable partner to international cooperation. On this special occasion, the newly appointed Ambassador, H.E. Anu-Erika Viljanen, hosted an exceptional evening and delivered a touching speech. "In my first months as Ambassador, I have found in Saudi Arabia what has always been dear to me in international cooperation: trust, energy, passion and compassion, and an openness to work together for good. I am so proud of the work we have already accomplished together for the benefit of our two countries."

She also emphasized that the economies and trade sectors of the two countries complement each other and recalled the regular visits from both sides, including the visit of the Minister of Foreign Trade of Finland, Ville Skinnari's visit to Riyadh, and Saudi Minister of Commerce, H.E. Majid Al-Qasabi's visit to Helsinki. The Ambassador Viljanen also conveyed Finland’s compliments for the remarkable changes taking place in the Kingdom as the part of Vision 2030. MEET

EMILY GADACZ REAL ESTATE BROKER, AVID OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST Over 10,000 residents call the DQ home. Meet Your Neighbor profiles interesting people in our international DQ Community. Learn about the diverse experience, interests, and backgrounds of DQ dwellers. Read on, and Meet Your Neighbor. Tell us about yourself. Two years ago, I moved to Riyadh from Colorado, USA when my husband accepted a position contributing to HRH's incredible Vision 2030. Back in Colorado, I have enjoyed a lustrous 20-year career in luxury real estate sales. We are fortunate to have loving parents and are blessed with four children and a new granddaughter, Sawyer Rose. She just turned one year old and brings us more joy than we thought imaginable. I live an active life embracing new experiences. I love mountaineering, cooking, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends. How would family and friends describe you? I think they would say talkative; I am energetic, outgoing, and independent. Who or what have been the strongest influences in your life? There have been many but to name one: my father. He is one of the smartest people I know, to begin. He has an incredible work ethic and made his life's work as a very dedicated surgeon in service of others. He is a firm believer in volunteer work and giving back. He has the most kind and generous heart. He encouraged his three daughters to grow strong careers and be self-reliant. He and my mother have been married almost 55 years. Together, they are an example for the many generations of our family. What brought you to Riyadh? My husband, Howard Karawan, accepted a position in hospitality as CEO of one of the tourism projects in Saudi.

50

What are your thoughts and insights on being a resident of Saudi Arabia? I am so grateful for the experience of living in Saudi which has changed who I am. I knew so little about Middle Eastern culture, Muslim religion, and especially Saudi Arabia. The cultural adjustment mixed with the pandemic made the first year difficult and I felt quite isolated. Despite the slow start, I have made close friends and will be forever grateful to all those that helped ease the transition. I believe people crave a sense of belonging; I am certainly one of those people. The Saudis have shown us such warm hospitality. I find the locals to be inclusive, easy to connect with, and upbeat. We have been showered with home cooked food, so many types of dates, different Arabic coffee recipes, and lifelong friendships. It saddens me the misperceptions people have of Saudi Arabia without any actual real experience of the Saudi people. I think it is remarkable how the society here is shifting and growing while staying committed to keeping their culture and customs intact. What were your first impressions of the DQ? First impression - we were drawn to the more relaxed feel of the DQ with the multi-cultural mix of people yet maintaining a strong Saudi vibe. The access to Wadi Hanifa, all the trees and parks make it a great place to live. What do you like most about the DQ? We immediately fell in love with the DQ because of its walkability and access to nature. We enjoy the trails, go to Oud Square on a regular basis, bike to the gym and grocery, and generally enjoy taking a break from being in the car.
