INTRODUCTION

NP

Being a parent is one of the toughest jobs in this world. The constant bombardment of questions from growing children on a plethora of subjects always keeps us on our toes. My case is no different. My two adoring children keep me occupied with their questions, opinions, unconditional love, and warmth. As with any other parent, I and my wife, too, keep thinking about imbibing the right values and attitudes in our children to build their character from an early age. Being an avid reader of self-help literature in my youth, I knew the importance of systematic development of character in shaping one’s life. Although there is a huge body of self-help literature meant for adults, I hardly found any noteworthy for children. The desire to help our children develop the right attitudes, habits, and character gave birth to the idea of this book. This book is a culmination of my numerous conversations with my son and my daughter. It also includes my experience in life donning multiple roles of a son, a son-in-law, a husband, a father, a friend, and a corporate manager. It contains interesting observations about human behavior and the wisdom of hundreds of books accumulated over the last 25 years. It is a humble attempt to write an easy-to-read, interesting, and inspirational story for young readers that can help them build a strong foundation of character, the right attitude, and the winning habits in their formative years. Parents will also find the book useful in their continuous endeavor to guide their children on the right path. Following the ancient Indian tradition of seeking knowledge and wisdom through conversation, the book is in the form of a fictional conversation between a father and a son.

PROLOGUE

NP

“Happy birthday, Mayur,” I said and hugged my son as he woke up. “Thanks, Dad.” “So, you are eleven years old now and ready to take on the world,” I said. The pride on my face was obvious. I was pleased to see my elder child growing up to become a cheerful boy. “Yes, quite grown up now,” he said. The smile on his face was brimming with confidence. “Since you are admitting that you are now a grownup person, I will need to tell you what it means to be a grown-up.” “Are there rules for this too?” He winked at me knowing well where this conversation was headed. Little boys know their father more than anyone else! “There are no rules. For a change, I will tell you about some principles that should guide you to live a content and happy life. They will also help you to become successful in whatever you do.” “Great! It looks like I will be subjected to some philosophy sessions from you,” he said in a voice that appeared curious but apprehensive. “No philosophy lessons for you. We will just have some conversation between a father and a son on real living,” I said. He smiled and his eyes twinkled. “So, what’s going to happen?” “Every day we will have a small conversation to discuss something about life.” “I hope there will be no boring monologue.”

“Not at all. We will have a dialogue like grown-ups,” I  smiled and assured him that, now onwards, he would be treated like a grown-up. He seemed happy. “So, let’s see what we will discuss today.” “You will get to know that in the evening when we start our daily ritual after dinner,” I said to keep the suspense intact. “I love you, Dad.” “I love you too, my son.” I gave him a peck on his forehead and hugged him. *****
