So much can be said about her contribution to my life, that a whole book can be written about it. However, I will simply say that even an ocean of words can’t describe her true contribution to my life. After that, I bow to my dear and respected father Lt. Sh. Bodh Raj Shangari. Though he left us when I was nine only, the mere fact that he along with my mother brought me to this world, makes me indebted to him for this life as well as for the lives to come. edic astrology is a very old and comprehensive faith of astrology. Though some other similar faiths are like streams or rivers, Vedic astrology is an ocean which can provide resources to many of these faiths. I have studied and researched many such faiths like Numerology and Vastu but none of them holds their ground without the support of Vedic astrology. It is the faith which is the backbone of many such faiths. The fact that Vedic astrology is among the oldest faiths of its kind, also makes it vulnerable to many types of corruptions and adulterations from time to time. Some of these adulterations may be the results of misinterpretations of various concepts of Vedic astrology from time to time. Some others may be there because some scholars may have twisted some definitions, for selfish motives. Due to such adulterations, corruptions and misinterpretations, Vedic astrology may not look as capable and accurate to a number of people, as it actually is. With the grace of Lord Shiva, I have spent years in researching various concepts of Vedic astrology. It has been a constant effort to find out where and how much, such concepts may have been misinterpreted; and what could be

the correct interpretations of these concepts. Though in their misinterpreted forms, most such concepts of Vedic astrology don’t hold ground in real practice of astrology, almost all of them hold solid ground in their modified forms. This effort has taken many years of research as well as analysis of thousands of horoscopes. The results however, have been very rewarding. This book is an effort to create awareness among the lovers of Vedic astrology that this faith is still as capable as it was when it was born. Various misinterpretations from time to time may have caused confusions related to many important concepts of this faith. Through this book, an attempt has been made to create awareness about the concept of Kaal Sarp Yog. According to its prevalent definition; if in a horoscope, all seven planets except Rahu and Ketu are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. For example, if Rahu is placed in first house of a horoscope, Ketu is placed in seventh house of the same horoscope and the remaining seven planets are placed; either in the houses ranging from one to seven; or in the houses ranging from seven to one, Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope. The most important criterion for a planet to form defect in a horoscope is that it should be functionally malefic in such horoscope. Hence both Rahu and Ketu should also be malefic in a horoscope, for Kaal Sarp Yog to be formed in that horoscope. This gives us the refined definition of Kaal Sarp Yog. If in a horoscope, all seven planets are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope; provided both Rahu and Ketu are functionally malefic in the horoscope. It means that even if one of them xii

is benefic in such horoscope, Kaal Sarp Yog may not form in such horoscope. Once the formation of this defect is confirmed in a horoscope; its strength and field of impact is calculated. The field of impact is calculated on the basis of placements of Rahu and Ketu in various houses of horoscope. Based on these placements, 12 types of Kaal Sarp Yog exist; from Anant Kaal Sarp Yog to Sheshnaag Kaal Sarp Yog. The strength of Kaal Sarp Yog is calculated through the placements of Rahu and Ketu in various signs, nakshatras and navamshas; as well as through the influences of other benefic and malefic planets on Rahu and Ketu. The overall theme of horoscope and running times (Mahadashas) also affect the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog. This book features a chapter on Kaal Sarp Yog and 12 chapters on different types of Kaal Sarp Yog. Important factors like the aforementioned ones which may affect the results given by Kaal Sarp Yog have been discussed in details. Each chapter includes relevant examples from horoscopes. ahu and Ketu are most mysterious, interesting and fear generating planets among navagraha (the nine planets in Vedic astrology). From ancient times, astrologers have associated various types of bad things and unfortunate events with these two planets. What makes them even more interesting is that none of these planets have physical mass and they are shadow planets. Due to this attribute of theirs, some faiths of astrology find it difficult to believe that a planet which does not have any physical mass can affect the lives of billions of people on earth; and even more than that; such an entity can even be called a planet. This is why some faiths of astrology, especially the ones which did not originate in India; doubt the existence of Rahu and Ketu in the first place; let alone the choice of giving them a place among navagraha. Indian Vedic astrologers and sages however, were of different opinion as they believed that for any entity to affect us on any level; physical body is not a compulsory requirement. For instance, as long as our parents or loved ones are with us in their physical bodies; their impact on us is obvious and it looks practical. However when they leave their physical bodies and are no longer with us, does their influence on us die altogether?
