reface

At present, Geographic Information System (GIS) has become an inevitable tool in all walks of life. The GIS technology has been growing at a fast pace. The developments in Information Technology have reflected directly in this process. Information on GIS technology is also plenty in the form of various literature items, both open-source and commercial software tools and the different apps that are glued to mobile phones in recent times. To work with the GIS software, lot of tutorials and manuals are available. But almost all are explained with accompanying ready-made datasets. So it seemed worthy to show the workflow starting with the user’s own dataset, to georeference it, to make various themes, to calculate the geometry and ultimately to present the output as a beautiful map. This has been accomplished using both open source software – QGIS, and a commercial one – ArcGIS. The first part of this pictorial kit is based on QGIS, Version 2.12.1 ‘Lyon’. The latest version as on today is 2.18.12 ‘Las Palmas’. The present work has been attempted as an illustrated guidebook to those who begin to work with QGIS. The theoretical makeup cannot be found along with this and the readers/users are requested to kindly refer the text books/manuals/tutorials dealing with the same according to their convenience and access. As far as commercial GIS software is concerned, products from Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI) take a lead position. ArcGIS and its variants are running successfully for quite a long time now. The latest version that is currently in use is ArcGIS 10.5. The second part of this illustrated guide is based on ArcGIS 10, the Academic Edition of which we had purchased in the Department a few years back utilizing the special assistance from University Grants Commission (UGC). A small step for utilizing the mobile phones for GIS data handling in the field using an App – QField, is also discussed in the last part of the book. Hopefully, this small illustrated kit will be useful for the GIS beginners, especially the undergraduates and postgraduates in Geology, Geography, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering and allied disciplines, for their practical sessions and also for those who are interested to sail through the ocean of geographic information.

I would like to place on record my heartfelt gratitude to my beloved and respected teachers who have in one way or another contributed to the origin of this small piece of work: Dr. A. Balasubramanian, Professor, Dept. of Earth Sciences, University of Mysore; Dr. K. Gopalakrishna, former Head, Dept. of PG Studies & Research in Geology, M E S Ponnani College; Dr. V.A Ayisha, Head, Dept. of PG Studies & Research in Geology, M E S Ponnani College; Prof. V. Gopinathan, Former Dy. Director, Dept. of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Kerala; and Prof. M. Prabhakaran Nambiar, Head, Dept. of Geology, AWH College, Calicut. I express sincere thanks to my senior friend, Dr. A.N Manoharan, an expert in Geoinformatics, Dept. of Post graduate Studies & Research in Geology, Govt. College Kasaragod, who has always helped me in keeping my interest in GIS ablaze. I am grateful to my Colleagues, Research Scholars and students in the Department. Last but not the least, I acknowledge the patience and love expressed by my family members during the period of this work and I sincerely thank one and all for the same. V K Brijesh

for Beginners My father used to say, “If your fundamentals are strong, nothing can stop you.” This was the slogan of a leading advertisement released a few years back. This body of work has been attempted with that powerful thought in mind. Working with a GIS is like driving on a ghat road in an SUV. The more you go, the bigger the thrill. However, even for that, the art of driving has to be fully understood. This humble book is for enthusiastic and energetic beginners. If you believe in the power of an open source GIS, this book is for you! If you trust the strength of a commercial GIS, this book is for you! If you love to experiment with a GIS on your mobile phone, this book is for you! Dr. Brijesh V K is an assistant professor of geology at M.E.S Ponnani College in Kerala. He has obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Mysore in the field of hydrogeology. Dr. Brijesh’s research has been published by the Scholar’s Press in Germany. Apart from hydrogeology, hydro geophysics, water quality studies and groundwater conservation, his areas of interest are geographic information systems and remote sensing. Before his current role as a teacher, he worked for the Kerala Ground Water Department.
