Military Schools : An Introduction Rashtriya Military Schools were established by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India for providing qualitative education to the sons of military personnel (ex-servicemen also). Formerly these schools were known as King George VI Royal Indian Military Colleges. At present, there are five military schools in India. They are situated at Ajmer, Dholpur in Rajasthan, Chail in H. P., Bangalore and Belgaum in Karnataka. These schools are residential and are run on public school lines. Military schools prepare students for the All India Senior School Certificate Examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education. These schools also prepare students academically, physically and psychologically for entry into National Defence Academy. Medium of instructions in all Rashtriya Military Schools is English.

Administration Military Schools are under the direct control of the Director General Military Training, Army Headquarters, New Delhi. The composition of the Central Governing Council is as follows : (a) Defence Secretary Chairman (b) Deputy Chief of the Army Staff Member (c) Director General Military Training Member (d) Joint Secretary (G) Ministry of Defence Member (e) Joint Secretary Ministry of Education Member (f) Additional Financial Advisor Ministry of Finance Member (g) Two persons to be nominated by the Chairman Member (h) Any Educationist from one of the Public Schools (to be nominated by the Chairman) Member (i) Additional Director General (Army Education) Secretary In addition, the general administration of a military school is governed by the Local Board of Administration under the chairmanship of General Officer Commanding of the area in which military school is situated. Principal of the military school is the member secretary of the Local Board of Administration. Principal of the Military School is a Service Officer of the rank of Colonel or its equivalent. He is assisted by an Administrative Officer of the rank of Major or its equivalent. Besides dedicated teachers, every Military School has Matrons, Hostel Superintendents, Physical Training Instructors etc. Principal is the academic and administrative head of the school.

Academics In Rashtriya Military Schools academic instructions are imparted by well qualified and dedicated teachers. By using modern techniques of teaching special attention is paid to enhance the academic standard of the students. In order to assess the performance of the students, monthly tests are held at the end of every month. Special coaching is provided to the boys appearing in U.P.S.C. written examination for the entry into N.D.A. Apart from academic aspect boys are subjected to the obligations inherent in community living. Boys are required to follow the school discipline meticulously. Senior boys guide the Junior boys to learn to live in a disciplined way.

● Eligibility for Admission (a) Age : Boys must be within the age group of 10 to 12 years as on July 1. Six months relaxation in age is permissible for the sons of war widows/JCOs/ORs killed in action. (b) Education : A candidate should have passed class Vth from a Govt./recognized school before the date of admission to a Rashtriya Military School. However, a student studying in class Vth is eligible to appear in the entrance test. (c) Medical : The candidate should be medically fit. Selected candidates will have to undergo medical exam at the Command/Zonal and other Military Hospitals as nominated by the Director General of Medical Services prior to admission and only those found fit will be offered admission.

70% for wards of JCOs and other Ranks of Army, Navy and AF (including ex-servicemen), 30% for wards of officers of Army, Navy and AF (including retired officers) and wards of civilians.

(viii) (c) 50 seats are reserved for wards of service personnel killed in Action. Note : 15% and 7.5% seats are reserved for SC and ST in all categories.

● Facilities The Rashtriya Military Schools are residential Public Schools which provide quality education up to All India Senior School Certificate Examination Class XII and prepare the cadets to join Defence services.
