Chapter 1

The Early Days

I

was born in Nottinghamshire where my father resided. I was the third of his five children. At the age of fourteen, I left my family to study at Emanuel College in Cambridge for three years. Then I moved to London and started working as an apprentice to James Bates. He was a well-known surgeon and a very good master. I always desired to travel around the world. I used to spend the money I occasionally received from my father on my education. After four years, I returned to my father and expressed my intention, “I wish to see the world. For that, I need to go to Leyden and study the subjects that would help me during my voyages.” My father and some of our relatives arranged forty pounds and promised to send thirty The Early Days

pounds every year. After studying for two years and seven months, I went to settle in London. I was a surgeon now and had made a few voyages with Captain Abraham Pannel into the Levant. Few years later, I was married to Mary Burton of Newgate street. After my master, Mr. Bates’ death, I travelled to the East and West Indies several times in six years, as a surgeon in the ships. I loved to observe people and learn their languages. But soon, a time came when I didn’t like the sea anymore. All I wanted was to be with my wife and family. In this way, three years had passed until one day, I received an offer from Captain William Prichard. He was planning a voyage to the South Sea.

s decided, we went to sea on May 4, 1699, from Bristol. The early days of our voyage were very thriving. But as we proceeded towards the East Indies, a fierce storm drove us to the north-west of Van Diemen’s Land. The crew members were in terrible condition, encountering several constraints; many had already lost their lives. On November 5, after being thrown upon a rock by the strong wind, the ship split. I, along with five others, tried to escape in a boat. By then, we were too exhausted to row the boat and were willing to go where the waves led us to. I can’t tell what happened to the others, for I found myself floating amidst the tides. Gradually, the storm calmed and I managed to reach the shore. Meeting the Lilliputians

It was around eight o’ clock in the evening, and I was too tired to notice anything around me. I laid down on the soft grass and immediately fell asleep. Perhaps I had slept for nine hours. and when I woke up, I couldn’t move. My hands, legs and hair were fastened to the ground. I could see nothing but the sky above me. I could hear noises around me and felt something tiny moving on my body. Soon, forty little men, about six inches tall, walked onto my chest. I tried to lift my head to see what was happening but failed. By then, they had reached up to my chin and I could now see them clearly, guiding my eyes downwards. They had bows and arrows with them. I roared in wonder. The men began to run all over my body in terror. Many hurt themselves while landing on the ground. All of them shouted, “Hekinah degul,” which I couldn’t understand. Finding it very difficult to lie in the same position any longer, I raised 10 |

my left arm. The strings that had been used to fasten my arm to the ground broke. I quickly loosened the strings that held my hair on the left side. When I turned my head slightly to my right, there came a cry, “Tolgo phonac.” At once, I was attacked by hundreds of arrows, which felt like tiny needles. I intended to rise, but didn’t. A stage had been erected near my right ear, with four men on it. The tallest among them commanded, “Langro dehul san.” Soon, the men cut the strings that tied my hair and allowed me to turn my head towards the stage. A long speech was delivered to me which, I thought, included some threatening and requests. “I want food,” I said, putting my finger in my mouth. Fortunately, they understood my gesture and several little men climbed near my mouth with the help of ladders. They had brought baskets of meat sent by the king. I finished them in no time, and they continued feeding me with great astonishment. Then I Meeting the Lilliputians

signalled that I wanted drink. They gave me something that tasted like wine. When I had finished the food and drink, they all started shouting and dancing on my chest in joy. Soon after, an ointment with a pleasant smell was applied on my face and hands. This along with the sleepy potion in the wine acted well to dispose me to sleep again. The Emperor wished to take me to the central city as a prisoner. Five hundred carpenters and engineers were appointed to build a platform of wood, seven feet long and four feet wide, moving on twentytwo wheels. Strong cords were fastened around my entire body. Nine hundred strong men drew up the cords with the help of pulleys fixed on eighty poles and raised me on the vehicle. Fifteen hundred horses, about four inches tall, pulled the vehicle towards the city, half a mile away from there. After four hours, the journey was stopped to amend something that was out of order. A few natives, out of curiosity, climbed up my body. Meeting the Lilliputians

One of them was an officer in the guards. He put his sharp half-pike into my left nostril. I woke up sneezing fiercely, and the men ran for their lives. We moved through the entire day and rested at night with the guards pointing arrows at me.

The New Home

T

he next morning, we stopped near an old temple where the Emperor and many others had gathered to welcome us. I crept through the temple gate, which was four feet high and two feet wide. There were small windows on each side from which hung eleven chains. They were locked to my left leg with thirty-six padlocks and all the strings round my body were cut. The crowd was astounded to see me rise. The chains that bound my leg were two yards long and allowed me to move in semicircles and lie down at my full length. I crept out of my new home for fresh air. The Emperor was riding his horse towards me. His cooks and butlers pushed some vehicles laden with meat and drink towards me. The Emperor and his courtiers talked to me and retired after two hours, leaving a strong guard with me. The New Home
