Far away in a forest, a jackal wandered alone. He was hungry and tired. He hadn’t found anything to eat in days.

3

4

Soon he reached the edges of the forest. He could see the houses and the streets of the town nearby. It was a new place for him. He didn’t know anyone there and he wasn’t sure it was safe.

5

But he was very hungry. ‘Perhaps I could scavenge what people have thrown away,’ he thought. And he headed towards the town.

6

The sun was hot. The road was dusty. The jackal was tired and faint with hunger. When he reached the outskirts of the town, a dog barked. The jackal was a bit scared.

7

The dog howled and called out to his friends. Soon the street was filled with dogs barking at the jackal. The jackal tried to move forward. But the dogs wouldn’t let him. They charged towards him, barking and growling.

8

The jackal realised that he could not win a fight against a pack of dogs. So he ran into town as fast as he could. The dogs chased him. The jackal ran helter-skelter. He didn’t know where he was headed and ran straight into a weaver’s shed.

9

10

The weaver had gone out for lunch and left a drum of blue paint in his shed. The jackal in his hurry stumbled and fell into it. SPLASH! Startled, he stepped out of the drum of paint and realized he was soaked in blue paint. Outside, he could still hear the growl of the dogs.

11

The jackal came out of the shed. Strangely, the dogs first whined and then turned around and ran.

12

The jackal was still hungry. But he decided to return to the forest before the dogs came back. When he entered the forest, the animals looked nervous. They rustled in the bushes; they stamped their feet and grunted. They didn’t know who the blue creature was. One after the other, they started to run away from the jackal.
