Preface

Practice is the key to achieve perfection. We have observed that performance of a student on a test improves dramatically if he/she has reasonable understanding of the type of the question being asked in examination. It makes the student at ease and allows him/her to take the test calmly without any surplice and stress. This becomes more important in the context of competitive examinations where race is neck-to-neck. To understand the format and the kind of questions are asked, Practice Tests play a very important role. With this objective, we are presenting before you this book containing 10 Practice Tests for NTSE (National Talent Search Examination). These Practice Tests enhance student’s speed, accuracy and scoring ability and at the same time improves exam taking temperament. Effectively, these tests give you feel of 'Exam' before the final real Exam. Detailed solutions with answers have been given for better understating. We advised student to take these tests in examination like environment under in specified time limit. Students are advised to properly analyze their solution & think of alternative methods and linkages to the solutions of identical problems also. We firmly believe that the book in this form will definitely help a genuine, hardworking student. We have tried our best to keep errors out of this book. Comment and criticism from readers will be highly appreciated and incorporated in the subsequent edition. We wish to utilize the opportunity to place on record our special thanks to all team members of Content Development for their efforts to make this wonderful book.

How to prepare for NTSE Subject-wise strategy NTSE contains two papers of MAT & SAT at both level, State (Stage I) as well as National (Stage II). In these Papers MAT covers Reasoning and SAT covers General Science, Mathematics and Social Science.

1. Mental Ability & Reasoning This section contains 100 questions. The objective of this section is to gauge the power of reasoning, ability to judge, evaluate, visualize in space, spatial orientation, etc. of the candidates. Important topics - Analogy, Classification, Number Series, Insert the Missing character, Coding-Decoding, Cubes and Dices, Completion of Figure, Venn-diagram, Mirror and Water images, etc. Many students tend to overdo preparation of Social Science, General Science and Maths but in the process ignore MAT. However it is important to realize that MAT carries more weight than any of the subjects. Hence students are advised to practice a good number of questions from MAT.

2. SAT - General Science This section of SAT test paper consists of 40 questions from General Science - Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Important topics - Light, Motion, Force & Pressure, Work Energy & Power, Organic & Inorganic chemistry, Periodic table & Its Classification, Atomic Structure, Cells and Tissue, Human Health & Diseases and Microbiology & Respiration etc. You should follow NCERT books of class IX and X to prepare for this section. Focus should be understanding the basic concepts and their applications for advanced level problem of class IX and X.

3. SAT - Mathematics This part of SAT consists of 20 questions. For this section one has to learn the basic formula and concept of every topic of class IX and X Maths along with their application. Practice as many questions as possible to master Maths and develop scoring ability. While practicing, you should also focus to develop short tricks to solve question quickly & accurately.

4. SAT-Social Science This part of SAT consists of 40 questions from Social Science - History, Geography, Civics, Economy. There is no iota of doubt that managing the topics of Social Study is also very important. In stage-1 knowledge of History, Geography and Civics is required, and in Stage-II student must also have good knowledge of current affairs, current events and Country also.

Tips to Become an NTSE Scholar 1.

Know your Strengths & Weaknesses It’s necessary to know your strengths & weaknesses. E.g. If you’re strong in Mathematics and Science but average in languages and weak in social sciences, then focus on your weak subject and turn your weaknesses into strengths for an overall good score.

2. Follow NCERT Books Follow NCERT books of classes IX and X. For some concepts in biology, refer NCERT Class XI Biology textbook (only portions that are relevant to IX and X class curriculum). It’s imperative to thoroughly study the Social Studies NCERT book for NTSE. 3. Strengthen Your MAT Section The MAT section tests your analytical ability and reasoning skills. As it is not the part of regular curriculum of class IX and X, hence you must give sufficient time for preparing for this part. Also remember this part of question paper has maximum weightage. 4. Solving Sample Papers You must solve sample papers in exam like environment. You should aim to solve these papers within the stipulated time so that you can improve your speed and know the sections that consume more time. 5. Analyze Your Performance Make sure you minutely assess what you could do and what you had a hard time with. Was it the subject understanding you lacked? Or did you miss out on the scores because of silly mistakes? Whatever it is, just analyze your performance very critically. Once you know your weak points, take corrective measures. 6. Practice, Practice & More Practice Finally, regular practice is what will get you through. Solve as many questions as possible so that you’re not shocked on the exam day. Take the help of your school seniors and teachers. With practice, you’ll also get more confident about your speed, subject knowledge, and accuracy.

Just remember that you don’t have to be a Know-It-All to compete. You can be just an ordinary candidate and follow these tips to become an NTSE scholar.
