PREFACE As one ages and experiences life, many feelings and impressions get instilled and embedded in his/her mind and these relate to the different faces of life which he/she has come across. What better way to share these feelings than to express them through Odes penning down all that is warmly cuddled in one’s heart through an appealing prose ?. For, an Ode or Poetry is a mannerism which allows one to speak his heart out in a very presentable way ie enwrapped in decency and in a refined language. As I too have lived for more than half century now, I got this idea of translating my impressions in form of a poetry book during the idle hours of the lockdowns imposed due to the corona pandemic. This is my first book and as I write in both English and Hindi, I have made this collection a unique sort , in the sense that the book has two sections, one for English poems and one for Hindi Kavitas and I am very hopeful that it will be received well. My optimism is based on the fact that in India, as on today, Hindi and English languages combined, cover 59 % of the total population and nearly 75 % of the literate populace. Hindi prose has understandably some Urdu mixed in it which I feel only serves to enrich the national language and reflects the harmonious amalgam of communities in this great land of diversities. I have towards the end of the book, kept v

some pages where Meanings of some not so common Words (used here) have been given for reader’s convenience. In this book, I have dwelled upon various aspects of life such as Love, virtue of work, Death, Sex and on personalities like Father, Sons, Labourers, Women of India and have also touched romantic themes like Beauty of a woman, Her bewitching smiles, Her influence on lovers and the time in wait for her etc. among others. None of my works have so far been published anywhere; so this venture is more so a maiden effort and I would not claim it to be crafted to my complete satisfaction in any way. Rather while trying to articulate my feelings during course of writing these poems, I have often groped for a suitable word. Of what caliber I am that would only be decided by the response to this book. However with the above background, I submit this presentation to Poetry lovers so that they go through the book and if they find it or a part of it worthy of appreciation, then I would be indebted if they convey their likings to me so that I may be encouraged for further such ventures. So wishing a happy reading and soliciting a fair feedback from you all ! ( Saurabh Srivastav ) ‘Chaanv’, 23 B, Sai Hills, Bhopal-42

Little Fairy The little girl in a bright floral frock, was prancing about her pony tail bouncing, as she played happily with a ball. She smiled as she exchanged puerile glances with passer-bys her beautiful face radiating a gleam knowing her charm is cast, so she is being watched. The old sober gentleman resting on a bench and observing her from a distance, was transported across seven seas as he began missing his granddaughter of the same age, brooding, how the little darling would run up to his arms, how she would sit on his lap and with her cute heavenly face, implore for a fairy tale 1

and in between the story …. would drop into blissful sleep, The Grandpa would seeing her innocent face think that she looked more beautiful than any little fairy of any fairy tale ever. Suddenly a ball landed on the old man’s frame and a veil came apart... a fairy was there right in front of him ! she was smiling and asking for the ball her hair were tied in a pony tail, and she was wearing a floral frock.

Mr. Professor Tree Look, Look at the Tree ! Look like you have never seen before Look closer, See it’s speaking ! It’s articulating ! It wants to convey something, It’s so persistent, so clear now Hear the muffled whisper…. It’s Roots say… To grow up strong make the base strong first Because only it will nourish The blooming spread above, your crowning glory . Hear ! what the Bird’s nest on it says…. Once prosperous, open your heart to others Let the needy find a cradle of solace in you Live, thrive but let not others be deprived. See ,the green canopy on it, it is speaking now…. Son, bear the simmering Sun, endure the biting hail 3

but let not troubles deter you, from giving others your shade. or from sharing your very own fruits and distributing the mirth of swings to all populace. The Posture of the Tree is preaching now….. Hold your own, come snow, come storm, stand out proud on the horizon, but bend at times effusing happiness in your sway and let pressures to uproot you thus end up in vain. The Stem too is emphatic …… Be connected with your roots all time proliferate, like branches from trunk, but in a balanced way… retaining a strong core to keep troubles at bay. The silence of it’s breath is communicating too….. absorb the venom, intake the let out pollutants and give fresh air – all purity in return, for the environment to sustain healthy and render thus selfless service for humanity.

Love Let the fountain of love effuse in your heart till it gushes within you saturating every vein of your body and dictates every stroll of your mind. Let your love over flow to the external world.. breaking barriers of self concerns, and spread happiness for one and all ending different alienations. Let every action and every notion of yours become a word of an unspoken language that people with you popularise and make the world fraternity to realise that loving, not hating, is the profitable deal and that they are different souls….. emanating from the same oneness from somewhere alien to this universe and meeting in this world in the form of materialistic bodies to stage a sequence of the play called Life. 5
