PREFACE All of us live in the midst of technology. We depend on technology for every aspect of our lives such as, education, communication, entertainment, designing, medicine, etc. The list is endless. Information and communications technology (ICT) has also become an integral part of our education system. Computer Science is now not limited to just teaching definitions and commands. Instead, it helps the learners to understand and appreciate the varied uses of computers and its vast applications. The young learners must be equipped with the correct tools to utilise this amazing machine. At the same time, they also have to be aware of the demerits and harmful effects of the technology, if it is misused. We have tried to make the learning experience interactive and hands-on for the young learners. Touchpad PLUS (Version 2.1) is based on Windows 10 and MS Office 2016. This series contains five sections: Digital World section introduces fundamental and application concepts to embrace computer science and integrate them with other subjects and skills.

Cyber World section covers Internet literacy and makes the students aware of cybercrime and cyber security, website development, etc.

Computational Thinking section includes interesting and engaging activities on Reasoning, Visualization, Interpretation, Critical Thinking, Information Processing and Algorithmic Intelligence and thereby making them smarter. Coding World section introduces students to the world of coding and thus developing their problem solving and logical skills.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) section takes the students on a voyage to the world of latest trends like Robotics and AI along with an AI game, making them future ready. We hope that the book enables the children to learn the concepts with not only the purpose of gaining knowledge but also to be able to find its applications. We look forward to any suggestions for improving the book. —Publisher

COMPUTER SYSTEM A computer system is made up of many parts. Each part of the computer performs a different task. The computer system is made up of two types of parts—Hardware and Software. The parts of a computer that we use to work with the computer are called devices. Computer System

7

COMPUTER HARDWARE The parts of a computer that we can see and touch are called Hardware. All input, processing, output and storage devices form the hardware components of a computer system. For example, keyboard, mouse, etc. The hardware components are divided into four groups. Hardware

Input Devices

Processing Device

Output Devices

Storage Devices

Input Devices The devices that are used to enter data into the computer and give orders are called input devices. Let us study about some of the commonly used input devices.

Keyboard A keyboard is used to give input to the computer by typing numbers, letters and special characters.

Mouse A mouse is used to send instructions to the computer with the click of a button. It is also used to draw pictures and select objects in the computer. It is also called a pointing device.

Scanner A scanner is used to read paper documents, images or pictures and send them as input into the computer.

Joystick A joystick is used to play games on a computer. It helps to control the different movements in the game.

Touchscreen A touchscreen is used to enter data by simply touching the screen. In this, finger acts as a pointing device and the object on the screen is pointed using a finger. 8

Touchpad PLUS (Version 2.1)-III

Microphone A microphone is an input device. It is used to record voice, music and sounds that can be stored on a computer.

Web Camera A web camera is used to take pictures in digital form and store photographs in the computer. It is also known as webcam.

Light Pen A light pen is used to point to objects or draw on the screen in a way like a touch screen.

Processing Device The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the processing device that works on input and sends the result to the output devices. The CPU is a chip which is placed inside the CPU box. CPU is also called the “brain” of a computer as it is responsible for all the work done. A CPU is further divided into three parts: ALU, CU and MU.

Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) ALU does all the arithmetic calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. It also does comparisons like greater than, less than, equal to, etc.

Control Unit (CU)

CPU

CU coordinates and controls all the parts of the CPU. The CU gets the data and instructions from the memory unit and passes them to the ALU in a step-by-step manner.

CPU Box CPU Memory Unit

Memory Unit (MU) The CPU also has a memory like human beings. It stores the data and instructions that you give to the computer along with the results of the processing.

Control Unit

Airthmetic & Logic Unit

Output Devices The result we get after processing is called Output. The devices which help us to get these results or outputs are called output devices. Let us study about some of the commonly used output devices. Computer System

9

Monitor A monitor looks like a television. It is also known as a Visual Display Unit or VDU. The monitor shows the data that you input and its result (output) after the computer processes it.

Speakers Speakers are used to hear music, voice and sound on a computer.

Headphones Headphones are used to listen to music and sound without disturbing others as they are worn by an individual. But wearing them for a long time can affect your hearing power and cause damage to your ears.

Printer A printer is used to print the result of the work done by the computer on paper. We can print documents, drawings, images, etc. in black & white as well as in color using a printer. There are two types of printers.

Laser Printer It uses a laser beam to print the hard copy.

Inkjet Printer It sprays ink on the paper to print the hard copy.

Plotter A plotter is used to print big sketches, diagrams and maps on long sheets of paper. They are used by engineers, architects, scientists and designers.

Projector A projector projects or displays data of computer screen on a large screen or surface for audience.

10

Touchpad PLUS (Version 2.1)-III

Smartboard A smartboard is used in classrooms as a teaching tool. It is an interactive board that displays information with the help of a projector.

Storage Devices The devices that are used to store data are called Storage devices. There are many storage devices to store our data or work, so that we can get it back whenever we need it. Let us discuss about some of the commonly used storage devices.

Hard Disk The hard disk is permanently fixed in the system unit. It is used to store large amount of data.

Compact Disk The CD drive reads information stored on a compact disc (CD). CD is an external storage device. It can hold upto 700 MB of data.

DVD These look like CD but they can store a large amount of data.

Pen Drive It acts as a portable hard drive and is easy to use. Pen drive has storage capacity of upto 1TB.

IPO CYCLE A computer works on the IPO (Input-Process-Output) cycle. It receives input from the user through input devices, processes it using the CPU and gives back the output using output devices. This cycle is known as IPO cycle. Computer System

There are two types of software: System software and Application software. Software

System Software

Application Software

System Software A software that controls and manages all the activities of a computer system is called System software. The system software is like a manager who manages a computer system. When we switch on a computer, the first thing that system software does is to prepare the computer for you to work on it. It loads important files so that you can work and run the application software. This software is called the Operating System. Operating system is the most commonly used system software. Microsoft Windows is the most popular operating system used by people across the world. There are many versions like Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 , Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 11 is the latest version.

Windows 11 Application Software The software that are designed to perform some specific type of jobs on a computer are called Application software. Paint, Tux Paint and Windows Media Player are examples of application software.
