PREFACE All of us live in a technology rich environment. We depend on it in some way for every aspect of our life such as, education, communication, entertainment, designing, medicine, etc. The list is endless. Computer Science is no longer limited to just definitions and commands rather, it has now become the central focus of our lives. It now helps us to understand and appreciate the applications and the vast uses of computer science in our lives. This series has been written and designed with an idea to help the next generation students to hone their already curious minds. Since technology is inter related to everyday activities, our books contain examples from everyday life for the students to relate and map the concepts easily with other subjects as well. The idea is to provide students with a medium to nurture and develop their skills rather than simply learn about computers and technology. Touchpad Prime (Version 2.1) is based on Windows 10 and MS Office 2016. The books have been designed in such a way that teachers can use them as tools to integrate computer science with other subjects and skills. The chapters introduce the concepts in a simple and easy to understand language that helps the students to learn the concepts easily. The content has been developed using a conversational style for the young generation to make it an interesting read. There are three characters found in the chapters discussing various topics to make the learning process more interactive for the student. In order to emphasise on the use of concepts in this book, "Mind Drill" has been added to challenge students and encourage learning. Mind drill contains different sections to engage the students in meaningful learning process, such as Rapid Fire, Evaluation Time, Activity Time, Hands-On, Find Out, Group Task and In The Lab. This book also incorporates elements like Warm Up, Fun Fact, Soft Hint, Word Bank, Let’s Revisit, Computer Ethics as important tools to enhance teaching-learning process. We hope that the book will help the children to learn the concepts and find their applications for progressive development of computer-aided education. We look forward to any suggestions to improve the book. Here’s wishing young readers lots of tech fun and a knowledge-filed journey ahead! —Publisher

Learning Objectives t and Useful • Computer: A Smar Human-made Machine uters • Humans and Comp s • Uses of Computer s • Types of Computer

Computer is a smart machine. It is used for many tasks. But how is it different from humans? I will tell you. Machines are human-made things that save our time and make our work easy. Computers are smart and useful machines. A computer cannot work on its own. It needs commands or instructions to work.
