PREFACE All of us live in a technology rich environment. We depend on it in some way for every aspect of our life such as, education, communication, entertainment, designing, medicine, etc. The list is endless. Computer Science is no longer limited to just definitions and commands rather, it has now become the central focus of our lives. It now helps us to understand and appreciate the applications and the vast uses of computer science in our lives. This series has been written and designed with an idea to help the next generation students to hone their already curious minds. Since technology is inter related to everyday activities, our books contain examples from everyday life for the students to relate and map the concepts easily with other subjects as well. The idea is to provide students with a medium to nurture and develop their skills rather than simply learn about computers and technology. Touchpad Prime (Version 2.1) is based on Windows 10 and MS Office 2016. The books have been designed in such a way that teachers can use them as tools to integrate computer science with other subjects and skills. The chapters introduce the concepts in a simple and easy to understand language that helps the students to learn the concepts easily. The content has been developed using a conversational style for the young generation to make it an interesting read. There are three characters found in the chapters discussing various topics to make the learning process more interactive for the student. In order to emphasise on the use of concepts in this book, "Mind Drill" has been added to challenge students and encourage learning. Mind drill contains different sections to engage the students in meaningful learning process, such as Rapid Fire, Evaluation Time, Activity Time, Hands-On, Find Out, Group Task and In The Lab. This book also incorporates elements like Warm Up, Fun Fact, Soft Hint, Word Bank, Let’s Revisit, Computer Ethics as important tools to enhance teaching-learning process. We hope that the book will help the children to learn the concepts and find their applications for progressive development of computer-aided education. We look forward to any suggestions to improve the book. Here’s wishing young readers lots of tech fun and a knowledge-filed journey ahead! —Publisher

I have seen a Computer at school and my parents work on a laptop at home. They are different in size. But I don't know about types of Computers. There are four types of Computers. Let me tell you about them.
Types of Computers All types of computers have a CPU, keyboard, and a screen to display output. But they differ in their size, cost and speed. Let us learn more about them. On the basis of size and shape, Computers are mainly classified Microcomputer, Minicomputer, Mainframe and Supercomputer.
Microcomputer These are the smallest computers. Their size ranges from a calculator to a desktop. Any computer that has a microprocessor chip as its CPU is called a Microcomputer. It is a single-user Computer. Examples of Microcomputers are: •
Desktop Computer
•
Laptop Computer
•
Smartphone
•
Tablet Computer

These are used in various places like home, shops, schools, etc. to do different jobs. Microcomputer is also known as Grandchild Computer.
Minicomputer These are more powerful, faster, have more memory

space and larger than microcomputers. These are multi-user computers, which can support up to two hundred users at the same time. These are used in places like banks. Minicomputer is also called Midsize Computer or Child Computer.
Mainframe Computer These are large computers. They are faster and have greater memory space than minicomputers. These are also multi-user Computers, capable of supporting hundreds, or even thousands of users at the same time. These are used by large companies or government agencies to store large amount of data in a centralised location. These are mostly used for scientific research. Mainframe Computer is also called Father Computer.
Supercomputer These are the fastest and the most powerful types of Computer. These are very expensive, big in size as compared to Mainframe Computers. Supercomputers are used for special purposes like weather forecasting, weapons research and development. Supercomputer is also known as Grandfather Computer.

Features of a Computer Computer is not just an ordinary machine. It has many features which make it so special, such as:
Speed Computer works at a very high speed. It does calculations faster than a human being.
Accuracy Computer always gives accurate results. So, whatever input we give, it gives accurate results.
Diligence Computer is free from tiredness. Unlike human beings, it can work with same efficiency for a long time.
Memory The best thing about a computer is its large memory, where it stores a huge amount of information that can be retrieved quickly and easily when needed.
A computer is a multipurpose machine that performs a variety of tasks and is used in almost all fields.

parts of computer. A computer is mainly divided into two types of parts. Let me tell you in detail.
Computer System A computer system is made up of many parts. Each part of the computer performs a different task. The computer system is made up of two types of parts—Hardware and Software. The parts of a computer that we use to work with are called devices.

Computer Hardware The parts of a computer that we can see and touch are called Hardware. All input, system. The hardware components are divided into four groups. Hardware

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
processing, output and storage devices form the hardware components of a computer
Input Devices The devices that help us to enter data into the computer and give orders are called input devices. Some of the input devices are keyboard, mouse, scanner, joystick, touchscreen, microphone, web camera, light pen, etc.
Keyboard A keyboard is used to give input to the computer by typing numbers, letters and special characters.
Mouse A mouse is used to send instructions to the computer with the click of a button. It is also used to draw pictures and select objects in the computer. It is also called a pointing device.
Scanner A scanner is used to read papers, documents, images or pictures and send them as input into the computer.
Joystick A joystick is used to play games on a computer. It helps to control the different movements in the game.
13
Touchpad PRIME (Version 2.1)-III
Touchscreen A touchscreen is used to enter data by simply touching the screen. In this, finger acts as a pointing device as the object on the screen is pointed using finger.
Microphone A microphone is an input device. It is used to record voice, music and sounds. These can be stored on a computer.
Web Camera 14
A web camera is used to take pictures in digital form and store photographs in the computer. It is also known as webcam.
Light Pen A light pen is used to point to display objects or draw on the screen in a way like a touch screen. Fun Fact!
Laptops have in-built cameras, so webcams are used in Desktop systems.
All these devices are listed in Input Devices but what about monitor, CPU and other devices we learned in previous class? I was about to tell you the other devices which are very important for the working of a computer.
Output Devices The devices that show us the result of processing done by the CPU are called output devices. The result can be in any of these forms: display on the monitor, print by the printer and sound from the speakers.
The output which is displayed on the screen of a monitor is called the soft copy. A printout of the soft copy on paper is called the hard copy of the output. Some of the commonly used output devices are shown below:
A monitor looks like a television. It is also known as a Visual Display Unit or VDU. The monitor shows the data that you input and its result (output) after the computer processes it.
Speakers
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
Monitor
Speakers are used to hear music, voice and sound on a computer. 15
Headphones A headphones is used to listen music and sound without disturbing others as they are worn by an individual. But wearing them for a long time can affect your hearing power and cause damage to your ears.
Printer A printer is used to print the result of the work done by the computer on paper. We can print documents, drawings, images, etc. in black and white as well as in colour using a printer. There are two types of printers.
Laser Printer It uses a laser beam to print the hard copy.
Inkjet Printer It sprays ink on the paper to print the hard copy.
