READING Direction (16 – 20): Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. 1. Anna didn't care about Christmas gifts or decorating Christmas trees. She did not wish for Santa or a new toy. For 6 year old Anna eating marshmallows without her mother breathing down her neck was more important than the holiday season. She had been counting days on her little fingers when Halloween will come and when she will be the official owner of her own sweets with various choices. 2. Anna was busy counting her Halloween harvest. This year she had gone one block extra because she was no longer a baby who cried when the street light flickers at night. Yes, there were times when she thought she might drop her candy basket and run home to her mother crying but this year Anna decided to become a big girl and earn extra sweets for herself without her big sister or mother accompanying her. 3. Proud of herself for not letting the street lights scare her, Anna opened a caramel candy and popped it in her mouth as a reward. "Ann…I've to rush to the supermarket to get some groceries, it will take me a while okay…you hear me dear?" Anna instantly replied "Yes, mom!" Anna went back to counting her candies from Halloween when suddenly she remembered her mother saying, "it will take me a while". Anna staring at her marshmallow collection started wondering what if she finished it all before her mother comes back? 4. Usually when she eats more than 3 pieces her mother gives her the look, first the look, than the full name and lastly the "no more candies for ten days as a punishment". A sudden impulse took over her and she started filling her mouth with marshmallows. First went the pink ones, then the yellow then the white. She was giggling internally thinking there's no one to give her the disapproving look. Anna thought to chew them at once and relish it all. The only problem was she couldn't move her jaw! She tried a few movements but she had stuffed too many of them. Her mouth hurt. 5. After 5 brave seconds Anna broke into tears in pain and frustration. But no one was in the house. Thinking about this made Anna's tears roll faster. Now she missed her mother's glare. It was not until an hour later her mother came home, by the time Anna had enough time to count the numbers of marshmallows she stuffed in her mouth. "8!" she thought to herself. It took her only eight of them to make her hate marshmallows for life.

There was music playing in the background and she noticed that it was her father's favourite song about a cowboy or something; it wasn't a tune that she particularly favoured. 2. She chose to go and find her mother who she thought might be at the front of the house on the veranda with her uncle and aunty. It turned out that her mother was with them and that she had left the key on the table in the kitchen. Fiona went back and checked but couldn't find it. She looked around and eventually found it on the sideboard next to the fruit bowl. 3. When Fiona eventually got outside into the back garden, it had started to rain lightly and it made the garden look like a movie set. She set up her table and got her tea and book and sat down to relax. As she did, she heard a loud banging noise coming from over the wall. This was not good, and it was really vexing her and ruining her quiet time. Fiona decided to text her neighbour who was in the same year as her at school. READING Direction (16 - 20): Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Recent research in London, England, has been investigating why dogs lick humans in the face. Yuck! This horrible habit upsets most people and is considered dangerously dirty by many others. In the UK, people seem to love their dogs. They let dogs sleep in the house, eat from the table, and often sit on beds and sofas. So, it is clear that many of the Europeans are mad about dogs. The research suggests the reason why dogs would lick their owner or other people in the face. In the past, it was assumed that dogs do this only to get food, water or perhaps even a walk outside. Now, it is believed that dogs react to the behaviour of their owners. Animals have lived with humans for a very long time, long before we had a written history and long before we had the science to understand much about them. Dogs have been used for a long time to help people with visual disabilities, cats are taken into care homes for elderly people, rabbits are used in hospitals to make kids happy and even emus are used as emotional support pets in America. It is no surprises then that there is more to the behaviour of dogs than we fully understand. It is now believed that dogs understand the different faces people have for example, a happy face with smiles and open eyes will make your dog happy and often want to play. The same is true for when people wear their angry faces. The dog will see this and try-by licking-to make them happy again. 16. Why do English people often let dogs in their house? Sometimes people do it more or less frequently, but most people try to make sure their nails are clean and short. In a recent ceremony, a man cut his fingernails for the first time in 66 years. It is hard to even imagine but the man from Pune was happy to have the nails on his left hand cut and immortalized on display for others to see for at least 100 years. Shridhar Chillal had not cut his nails on his left hand since he was 16 years old back in 1952, now at 82 he has decided it is time. The longest of his nails was his thumbnail that measures 197.8 centimetres! In total, if you added all the nails up, they nearly reached 910 centimetres in length. He did have some health issues because of his extra-long nails. Chillal lost the feeling in his left hand because he could no longer use it and he lost the hearing in his left ear too. This was because the nails were so heavy, the weight damaged his nerves on his left side. After the ceremony, Chillal has decided to donate his nails to a museum. They will be on display at different places around the world but will mostly be on display in central New York.
