READING Direction (31 – 35): Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. 1. I often think about what my dream house might be like and where it would be. Sometimes I think I want to live somewhere warm, where the sun shines most of the time. Other times I like the seasonal variation that is currently around me. Perhaps, I would be bored if the weather was constantly nice. In whatever climate the house may be in, it should be near the sea as I’d prefer a sea view. Unfortunately, with a sea view comes a sea view price tag, and this is currently well beyond my reach. 2. If money were no object, I think I would like to live in a castle. However, if you have ever been in a castle, you would know that they are often drafty, with small windows, bad insulation, and a musty smell. I don’t like any of these things. So, I would like my castle to be modernized. To take full advantage of the sea view it will need some large, single pane glass windows. I am quite keen on saving the planet, so they would need to be well fitted and employ some sort of light harvesting technology so that I could use the sun’s energy to give power to the building. The castle would need wind turbines, geothermal energy pipes, and/or solar panels. 3. I love the outdoors and would like to envisage creating an indoor-outdoor garden within the house with a retractable roof. Within this garden would be a pond feature that I could swim in. It would not be a conventional pool but perhaps a series of streams and pools as you can see in nature. There would be areas where the current increased in strength, so I could practice swimming against it, or simply be taken along by it, floating through the waves and through my garden. I am not entirely sure of the practicalities of creating such an idyll, but if I could, I would. 31. Choose the best title or heading for the passage. A) The House I Live In B) Ideal Home C) A Castle for a King D) Watery Living 32. What kind of house was financially unattainable for the author? A) A flat B) A sea view house C) An apartment D) An ecological house 33. According to the passage, at what kind of a place does the writer want to live? A) A cold and dry place B) A place which has seasonal variations C) Near the forest D) On the hills 34. The writer was quite keen to save the ______. A) Money B) Earth C) Castle D) Solar energy 35. What does the word ‘envisage’ mean in the third paragraph? A) Imagine B) Doubt C) Produce D) Disregard Direction (36 – 40): Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. 1. In ancient Chinese history, there were lots of heroes, but most of them were men. China was a patriarchal society where men’s social status was higher than women’s in the ancient time of China. Women couldn’t join the army and were only allowed to do household chores. Hua Mulan felt she didn’t fit into the stereotypical nature of being subservient and coy as a female. As a teenager Mulan struggled to find her own identity and also wanted to be accepted for the way she was. Mulan was more interested in learning sword fights and war stories rather than wearing pretty dresses. 8

2. Ancient China of Mulan was raging in constant wars, so the royal administration requested all the men to join the army. Mulan’s father though very old, still wanted to protect his country. Mulan couldn’t bear to see her aged father join the army with a limping leg, an injury he got from previous wars. She gave up her identity as a woman, cut her hair and joined the army as a boy. Had her identity been revealed before she could show her worth at the battlefield Mulan would have been sentenced to death for treason. Mulan who was already good in sword fights and martial arts did not falter or feared being amongst trained male soldiers. She managed to earn the respect and acknowledgement from her fellow soldiers and generals by being outstanding on the battlefield. 4. After her real identity was exposed, Mulan was only kicked out of the army and not sentenced to death because she saved Shang, the prince earlier. Her prowess on the battlefield in a way saved her own life. After that a series of incidents made Mulan return to save the emperor and combat against the Shan Yu, the celebrated villain, with the help of her allies. 5. Mulan was branded as the Savior of China and received the highest praise from the emperor, her allies, and the Chinese people as a whole. She returned home to her parents with Shan Yu’s sword and a medallion from the emperor. She presented those items to her father in an extremely formal way, since she feared rejection from her family due to her previous acts of dishonor. To her surprise, her father enveloped her in a tight hug and told her that she is accepted and loved for who she is. This alleviated her insecurities that were present in the beginning of the story, in which she felt that she couldn’t be her true-self due to societal and cultural standards. By finding and becoming her true self, she was able to complete her hero’s journey. 36. Choose an appropriate title for the passage. READING Direction (31 – 35): Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Sarah Yerkes was in her 90s when a friend invited her to try something new. A graduate of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Yerkes had had decades-long careers: first as a landscape architect using brick and stone; then as a sculptor creating works in wood and steel, and in her later years, papier-mache models made from newspaper and glue. As she aged, sculpting had become physically challenging. A fellow resident at Ingleside at the retirement community where she lives, had started taking a poetry writing class, so Yerkes joined, too. Last month, at age 101, she released her first collection of poems, “Days of Blue and Flame”. The book is the latest iteration of a creative mind that has worked with form and style for the better part of a century. She said recently, while eating a breakfast of cornflakes and toast in her apartment, that she really felt like the good fairies were standing over her bed, giving her the oomph to create. She was raised in Cleveland and educated as an architect. She fell into landscape design accidentally when she and a friend entered a contest and won. They ended up opening a business together. Sculpting came to her decades later, after she was in her 50s and newly married to her second husband, architect David. That was nearly 50 years ago and today she has unveiled her new book by giving a reading of it to her fellow residents at the home she lives in. What has changed for her is that she is now a record breaker as the oldest poet to release a book. 31. Choose the best title or heading for the passage. A) Echo B) Study C) Move D) Failure Direction (36 – 40): Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Britain’s bees are under threat after a family accidentally brought a non-native specimen home in their holiday luggage, experts have warned. When Ashley Toy, 49, spotted an unusual petal cocoon on the living room sofa, he had no idea that it had been left by a stowaway that had travelled back from his family’s summer break in Turkey. He threw the nest away but the next morning, his daughter Amelia, 19, spotted an unusual bee outside their home in Bristol. She did some research and learned the type of bee, Osmia avosetta, is only found in Turkey and Iran. The family had come back from Turkey only a week ago. They contacted the British Beekeepers Association which then alerted the environmental authority Defra and the National Bee Unit. A spokesman warned the rare bee could have a 13

‘devastating effect’ on native mason bees, adding: ‘Non-native species like this bee pose several problems and need to be controlled. Yearly, May 18th marks Endangered Species Day, created to raise awareness, engage conservationists, and ultimately advocate for the protection of thousands of the world’s species facing extinction. The last decade has marked a dramatic increase in the risks facing species from rhinos to bees. In 2016, the animal trafficking market grew to an estimated $23 billion. Many researchers have called the additional loss of animal life to habitat change, pollution, climate change, and other factors to a ‘global epidemic’. Meanwhile, the bee is happily constructing numerous beautiful cocoons in the family’s conservatory – 1,800 miles from home. Ever since finding the Turkish insect, the family has opened the back door every morning and watched in awe as the insect flies in and out with petals from their hydrangea, creating intricate nests. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust said it was not aware of Osmia avosetta ever being seen in the UK before and advised that it could be illegal to release a non-native species into the wild. Miss Toy said: “I guess if Defra are involved it must be a pretty big deal. They haven’t advised me to capture it yet. It’s there now, flying in and out with the petals. I’m completely baffled.” The National Bee Unit has contacted the family and is working out what to do next. 36. Choose the best title or heading for the passage.
