Categories of Computers Some other Special Computers

As you know that a computer is an electronic device used in different places for different purposes such as managing accounts in schools and reading at home. In this chapter, you will learn about the different types of computers and computer languages.

CATEGORIES OF COMPUTERS Nowadays, different types of computers are used that can be categorized on the basis of their: Type Size, speed, processing power and price. Let us learn about these categories in detail.

Type On the basis of their type or functioning, computers can be classified into three categories which are as follows: Analog Computer: refers to a computer that operates by measuring instead of counting. It measures the continuously changeable physical quantities like voltage, pressure, water flow, etc. Examples of analog computers are mercury thermometer, speedometer in cars, old radio, etc.

Analog Computer

Digital Computer: refers to a computer that uses digits (binary numbers 0’s, and 1’s) to generate, process and display data. All the modern computers that currently we use like Desktop, Laptop, and smartphone are examples of the digital computers. Some other examples of the digital computers are digital watch, digital thermometer, electricity Digital Computer

meter, etc.

Categories of Computers

7

Hybrid Computer: refers to a computer that provides the functionality of both an analog and a digital computers while processing and displaying data. It uses the speed of analog computer and accuracy from digital computer. Heart beat measuring machine used in hospital is the common example of the hybrid computer.

Size, Speed, Processing Power and Cost

Hybrid Computer

Computers differ in their size, processing power, speed and cost. On the basis of these factors, computers can be categorized as follows:

Microcomputer A microcomputer is a type of computer that has one microprocessor as its processing unit. It is a small and less expensive digital computer. This type of computers are made to be used by single user at a time. Some examples of microcomputer are: Desktop: It is a personal computer developed for regular use and generally placed at a single place on a desk or table. All its components such as keyboard, mouse and storage devices are connected through wire or wireless. Due to its size and power requirements, we cannot carry this type of computers.

Desktop

Laptop: It is a portable and small digital personal computer that is suitable for use while travelling. We can use a laptop computer by keeping it on our lap. A laptop computer has a built-in mouse, monitor and a keyboard. It also has a rechargeable battery. Laptop

Tablet: It is a portable digital computer smaller than the laptop computer. It has a touchscreen as its primary input device instead of mouse.

FEATURES OF WINDOWS 10 Windows 10 is an operating system launched by Microsoft Corporation in 2015. Some of the useful features introduced in Windows 10 are Sneak, Snap and Jump List.

Sneak The Sneak feature of Windows 10 shows you on the taskbar a preview of the windows that are open. For this, you need to hover your mouse over any icon on the taskbar. All the open windows related to that icon appear as mini windows showing the contents of that window. This feature is useful as it saves your time. You need not restore different windows to search a particular window. You can just 'sneak' the required window on your taskbar and click on the window that you want to work on.

Snap

Using Sneak feature

Suppose you have to compare two files. You need to arrange the two windows side by side exactly to fill half of the screen. It takes time to arrange windows like this. This becomes more time consuming if this work is to be done on regular basis. Windows 10 provides Snap feature to make this easy. To use Snap feature, click and hold on title bar of one of the two required windows. Move the mouse pointer towards left or right edge of the screen. Release the mouse button. The window will fill exactly half of the screen. The other open windows will appear as mini windows in the remaining half screen. Click on the other window required. This window will now fill the remaining half of the screen.
