The lady was taken into the ICU and the doors were closed. He was walking across the hall with anxiety filling his nerves. The beat of the man’s heart was louder than the sounds of the lightening and the thunders outside the hospital. He was interrupted by a noise. He stopped for a

The night sky is filled with thick clouds. The heavy downpour is drowning the streets of the city. The weather resembles one that precedes a cyclone with winds blowing at high speeds. A branch from the tree at the hospital is almost hitting the floor when an ambulance stopped at the entrance. A man in his thirties, wearing maroon shirt and black trousers got down and ran into the hospital. He returned with two boys wearing hospital uniform and bringing a stretcher. The man carefully lifted his pregnant wife up from the car and placed her on the stretcher. While the boys moved her into the hospital, the man ran along with a worried face.

moment to notice the noise. The noise was so sweet and soothing to the ears. When he realised what the noise really was, he quickly turned back to see a nurse smiling at him holding the crying baby in her hands. The nurse said “You have a girl”. He ran to it as fast as he can and took the baby into his hands. He looked at the baby. She has a little face and beautiful eyes almost closed, a pretty little nose and lips. Her fingers were so tiny. She was simply like a baby doll. He kissed his girl on her small head. The man took the baby into the operation room and smiled at his adorable wife. He put the baby in the cradle near the bed and hugged his wife with tears in his eyes. He said, “This is the best moment of my life. Thank you so much, Honey.” “I thought of a name for her, ‘NIDHI’.” The wife replied, “I know how you came up with that. The name is a combination of our names ‘Nitya and Sudhir.”

21.08.1996 4.00 PM. Hyderabad Srinagar. Swarga Residency. The room was filled with balloons and lights. The children were entering the room excited with gifts in their hands. One wall was filled with photos of the couple enjoying with their baby girl, arranged in the shape of heart. Meanwhile, Nitya came down the steps carrying the birthday girl in her arms. The baby looked really like an angel wearing the white frock with wings. The smile of the baby was like music of the heavenly air. It was contagious and almost brought smiles on everyone’s face in the room. All the children invited the baby with claps. Mohan arranged the Mickey-mouse shaped cake and the chocolates on a beautifully decorated table. The letters were so finely carved on the cake. “Happy Birthday to our ANGEL”

Sudhir took his baby girl’s hand and put it on the cake. The delicate fingers moving on the cake were just like the peacock playing music with its delicate feathers in the air. Sudhir announced the name of his daughter as Nidhi. Everyone sang birthday song to Nidhi.

A man with full grown beard wearing a black T-shirt was standing in the corridor. His eyes were sad as if he just lost something very precious. The nurse came handed over the baby to the man and said “It’s a boy.” He was relieved by looking at the boy and smiled. He took the boy to his mother and said “I am so sorry Honey, you hoped for a girl. But you don’t worry. He will grow up handsome and bring us a beautiful daughter by marrying someone special.” She smiled and turned to the baby “Hai JAI. We love you, Nanna.”

07.08.2013 Hyderabad Srinagar. Jai entered the campus of Pragati Engineering College with his father. He finally gave up his fight and agreed to join in the Engineering following his parents’ wish. The campus was filled with noises of students scattered across the sight. There are almost 50 buses parked on a side, a large ground covered with dark green grass and on a side was a football ground filled with enthusiastic young players sweating out their energies to the game.

A lady was standing to the left side of the room, shouting the instructions. “Parents in the third room to the left side and students to the room on the right side.” She was wearing a black dress and cream-coloured heels that perfectly match her complexion. She stood there with two

Jai, without having the slightest of interest in this entire chaos, walked along with his father towards the main block. In the entrance was painted a quote that says “Enter to learn. Leave to Serve.” Going through the line, he entered the block.

books in one of her hands and the other hand busy in adjusting her mike and the head phone. She is elegant both in her looks as well as her body-language. Somehow, seeing the lady, an excited smile appeared on Jai’s face. He wished him “Good morning, Ma’am. Have a good day.” She replied, “A very good morning dear, what’s your good name?” “It’s Jai Ma’am. I am a new student here”, he said with his over-spread smile. She said,” Ok Jai, go to class now. Your introduction session will commence in 5 minutes.” She continued to shout the instructions into her mike.

Jai walked into the class quickly feeling a bit tensed obviously as it is his first day of college. The classroom was filled with the chattering students. He found a place in the back corner and sat there silently searching the entire class for Bobby. But he was nowhere to be found. Bobby was Jai’s classmate in the childhood but parted ways later. He met him three days before and came to know that he was going to join in this college. It’s one of the reasons Jai agreed with his parents to join in the Engineering. A professor entered the class and talked about the college and its greatness as well as the achievements of the alumni. After two hours, the longest two hours of Jai’s life, the professor left announcing the class to look at the list of students in the display board and know their respective sections.

After 3 days, in the morning class, the professor not yet arrived. All the students were immersed in their own small group sessions, some laughing out loud, some playing around with their friends and some engaged in serious talks. Bobby started a fun game of finding each of them a perfect match from the girls. While his friends are fooling around talking about each girl in the class, Jai’s eyes were caught up on one girl. This girl was looking special standing out of all the other girls. She was talking to her friends, clicking the pen in one of her hands, pressing it on her lips in between the conversation and laughing her heart out. Her smile was perfect, at the same time innocent. Jai felt the time stopped for a moment. The professor came into the class and suddenly, Jai came to the senses and laughed at his own stupidity.

7

The next day, luckily Bobby came and to their surprise, they were allotted same sections. Both went to the classroom together. On the top of the door was written in block letters “CSE-B”. In the class, Bobby found his old friend named Sunny. The three sat in a bench. After a few minutes, a tall boy with curly hair entered the class and reached their bench and said “Can I sit here?” They agreed. So, a batch of four boys was formed on the very first day. Spending the whole day with them reduced Jai’s uncertainty in the idea of BTech and brought him some hope of good time in the college.

After almost one month of college, the fresher’s day was conducted by the seniors. The seniors randomly selected some students from the freshers and assigned them certain tasks to perform on the day. Jai was asked to perform a dance and Bobby was allotted a pole dance. Ram and Sunny escaped as they were absent the previous day.

Jai and bobby were excited for the fresher’s day as well as a little bit tensed for their respective tasks. But they decided to enjoy to the core no matter what. As they reached the campus, the ground was decorated with balloons and chairs are arranged in front of the Dias. A table and four executive chairs are kept on the Dias for principal, HOD and other guests. The programme started with a boy from seniors playing the song ‘Challa’ Song from Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Later the chairman and other dignitaries gave their “little” speeches. Later, the boring part got over and the party started. Bobby performed first and Jai’s performance

FRESHER’S DAY...

came later. He got tensed first, but once he reached on to the stage, he performed with full confidence. He performed on “ye mera dil” song as ordered by seniors. All the students cheered him up by clapping and jumping throughout the performance. He was happy coming down the stage and went straight to the changing room. When he came outside and walking towards the crowd, he was stopped by someone shouting “Hey mera dil!” from behind. When he turned back, he was shocked to see Nidhi dressed like a boy in jeans and shirt. Nidhi smiled and said, “don’t be shocked. It’s just that song you performed. I like it very much. That’s why I called you that. And by the way you rocked the performance.” Jai was almost dancing inside. He said, “Yeah. Thank you. What about the dress?” Nidhi explained that it’s her task by seniors to perform a song dressed as a boy and asked Jai if she could use his cap. Jai was more than happy to help her and gave her his cap immediately. Jai said with a smile on his face, “All the best for your performance.”

Jai went and joined his friends in the crowd. After a while, they went to the canteen as they found the party a little bit
