ADVICE-CUM-PREPARATION STRATEGY FOR

IBPS BANK CLERK CRP PRELIMINARY EXAM

ADVICE-CUM-PREPARATION STRATEGY

FOR

IBPS BANK CLERK CRP PRELIMINARY EXAM Thousands of aspirants get a glittering opportunity for a bright career as the Banking Sector is poised for a high trajectory growth. A Common Recruitment Process (CRP) will be conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) as a pre-requisite for selection of personnel for Clerical Cadre posts in the 11 Public Sector Banks. The Banking sector in India is poised for a high trajectory growth with prospects for a bright career to thousands of new entrants. Here is a unique opportunity for aspirants for a career in 11 Public Sector Banks through a Single Common Examination. A Common Recruitment Process Examination (CRP) will be conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) as a prerequisite for selection of personnel for Clerical Cadre posts in the Public Sector Banks mentioned below. This system of Common Examination for recruitment in Clerical Cadre posts has been approved by each of the 11 participating Public Sector Banks and the Managing Committee of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) with the consent of the Government of India. IBPS, an autonomous body registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 and a Public Trust under Bombay Public Trust Act 1950, has been authorised by IBA and has received a mandate from the 11 Public Sector Banks listed below to conduct the Common Recruitment Process. An individual who aspires to join any of the Public Sector Banks as a Clerk or in a post in that cadre will necessarily be required to take the CRP. Prospective candidates who wish to appear for the CRP will have to apply to IBPS and should carefully read the advertisement regarding eligibility criteria, online registration process, pattern of examination, issuance of call letters and score cards.

Candidates who appear for the CRP will be able to check their status after the examination. Scorecards will be issued to candidates who secure minimum qualifying marks and above in each test of the examination. It should, however, be noted that successful candidates in the CRP who have been issued scorecards and who meet the stipulated eligibility criteria are then required to apply to any of the participating banks they wish to as and when individual banks call for applications, quoting their personal details and their CRP scores. Each bank will then individually shortlist candidates and carry out their own selection processes such as Interviews etc. for final selection. Each participating Public Sector Bank will independently issue a separate recruitment notification, specifying their vacancies and stipulating the eligibility criteria in terms of age, educational qualification, proficiency in Offical Language of the State/UT for which vacancies he/she wishes to apply, experience (if any), minimum required level of IBPS score in each component test plus Total Score (if any) etc. Since clerical cadre recruitment would be on State-wise basis, candidates can apply for vacancies in one State/ UT only. It will therefore be necessary that candidates appear for examination in one of the centres of a particular State/ UT where they would like to apply for emaployment i.e. they have to appear for the examination from a centre for that particular State/UT. The candidate may also be required to possess proficiency in the Official Language of the State/UT for which vacancies he wishes to apply to be eligible as per the notifications of the Participating Banks.

A BRIEF DISCUSSION ON THE SUBJECTS OF EXAM Although the advertisement published by IBPS bears no formal description of subject wise syllabus but we can formulate a model syllabus on the basis of the memory based questions of previous Clerk Exams of IBPS. In this process the Think Tank of Kiran Institute of Career Excellence, Pratiyogita Kiran, Renu General Knowledge & World Vision & Kiran Prakashan, held wide discussions qualitatively and analytically. The abstract of discussion is given below as a pragmatic but to the point syllabus —

■ ENGLISH LANGUAGE In the Test of English Language, 30 questions would be asked. The questions in this section may be asked from the following topics : ✦ Passage Comprehension ✦ Common Errors ✦ Sentence Improvement ✦ Fill in the blanks ✦ Cloze Test ✦ Paragraph Rearrangement ✦ Antonyms and Synonyms. You can prepare General English with the help of follwing books : Kiran’s Competitive General English (Price Rs. 295), Kiran’s Competitive General English-Hindi Medium (Price Rs. 290), Ki-

ran’s Common Errors in English- English Medium (Price Rs. 295), Kiran’s Common errors in English-Hindi Medium (Price Rs. 255), Kiran’s Idioms and Phrases (Price Rs. 155), Kiran Standard English Grammar (Price Rs. 99). These books cater to the needs of competitive exams of today.

TYPE OF QUESTIONS ASKED IN EXAMS Directions (1– 8) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain, words are printed in BOLD to help you locate them while answering some of the questions. Smart City Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop 100 cities across the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. The mission’s objective is described as promoting “cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of “Smart” Solutions. Smart Cities Mission envisions developing an area within 100 cities in the country as model areas based on an area development plan, which is expected to have a rub-off effect on other parts of the city and nearby cities and towns. Cities will be selected based on the Smart Cities challenge, where cities will compete in a countrywide competition to obtain the benefits from

ICPWE-10

ADVICE-CUM-PREPARATION STRATEGY FOR

IBPS BANK CLERK CRP PRELIMINARY EXAM

this mission. The smart solutions are largely technology-based interventions such as traffic management using cameras and public transport using mobile applications and the Global Positioning System or GPS. It is a five-year program in which, except for West Bengal all of the Indian states and Union territories are participating by nominating at least one city for the Smart Cities challenge. Financial aid will be given by the central and state governments between 2017 and 2022 to the cities, and the mission will start showing results from 2022 onwards. As per the program, each city gets Rs 500 crore of central funds, matched equally by the state, as seed funding. It must raise the rest of the money independently to implement its plans. Analysis by the Centre for Policy Research shows that almost 70% of the funds are “sourced from public sources”. Smart city development can take two main forms – area based development, which is limited to small pockets of urban territory, and pan-city development, which extends to the entire city. Most pan-city development projects involve the use of “technology, information and data” to improve services. In many cities, this has transformed into mobile application based, GPS-enabled public transport and bike-sharing systems. According to Government, the area-based development projects across the 100 cities are worth Rs 1,64,204 crores while the pan-city ones amount to just Rs 38,914 crores. This is why the Housing and Land Rights Network has criticized the mission as the “smart enclave scheme”. Under the Smart Cities Mission, however, only one company is formed to handle every type of project in a particular city like roads, sanitation, housing and parking in certain areas of the city, which will no longer come under the purview of the Municipal Corporation. However, the experts criticize that this plan creates a potential conflict with the municipal corporation, an elected body whose members are answerable to the public. So, the critics say that the Smart City Mission appears to bypass the democratic process. It might create friction between the smart city corporation and local politicians which is not healthy in democratic administration. 1. What is the primary motive of the Smart Cities Mission as given in the passage? (1) Brining technology based interventions (2) Smart enclave benefits (3) Application of smart solutions (4) Decent quality of life (5) 2 and 3 2. What is the criterion for a city to obtain the benefits from this smart cities mission as given in the passage? (1) The City must raise part of the money independently to implement its plans (2) The City should not be under the purview of the Municipal Corporation (3) The City should compete in a countrywide competition

(4) The City should have Global Positioning System (5) All the above 3. Which of the following inference is CORRECT with respect to Government funds to the implementation of the plan? (1) The Government funds will start showing results between 2017 and 2022 (2) The implementation plan is shared by Government and respective cities (3) 30% of the funds are given by the Government (4) Each city will get equally matched fund from Government (5) 2 and 3 4. What is meant by “pan-city development” as given in the passage? (1) Only one company is formed to handle every type of project (2) Promotion of technology, information and data (3) Tested by Smart Cities challenge (4) The city that comes under the Municipal Corporation (5) Development extends to the entire city 5. Which of the following reason is stated by the author for “bypass of Smart Cities Mission over democracy”? (1) The mission is exercised by corporation which is accountable to public (2) The pan – city development consumes more budgets (3) Rub-off effect on other parts of the city (4) The mission is largely technology-based than human values (5) The mission is not exercised by elected members who are publicly responsible Directions (6 – 7) : Choose the phrase which is most nearly the same in meaning as the word printed in BOLD letter as used in the passage. 6. RETROFITTING (1) Demounting (2) Redeveloping (3) Dismantling (4) Degrading (5) Dismembering 7. TRANSFORM (1) Transmute (2) Blight (3) Preserve (4) Maintain (5) Stagnate Directions (8): Choose the phrase which is opposite to the meaning as the word printed in BOLD letter as used in the passage. 8. BYPASS (1) Detour round (2) Go past (3) Confront (4) Evade (5) Avoid Directions (9 – 16) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain, words are printed in BOLD to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

ADVICE-CUM-PREPARATION STRATEGY FOR

IBPS BANK CLERK CRP PRELIMINARY EXAM

President Donald Trump wants to strangle the Iranian economy and keep gas prices low for American drivers. The discovery that Russia has been exporting contaminated crude oil means any hopes that he could do both have all but evaporated. Trump decided not to renew waivers that let countries buy Iranian oil without violating his sanctions, affecting eight nations that have exemptions expiring in 2019. This drove crude prices higher at a time when gasoline prices were already rising. This harsher regime looks like it will stick. While some countries will try to persuade Trump to grant last-minute extensions, the current rhetoric from Washington doesn’t look encouraging. The exemptions that were made alongside the first wave of sanctions in November 2018 were unexpected. Offering a second round of waivers after saying there wouldn’t be any would, frankly, make Trump’s administration look stupid. Three countries won’t even try to persuade Trump to issue new waivers. Italy, Greece and Taiwan never used them and won’t miss them when they’re gone. China and Turkey have both criticized the unilateral nature of the sanctions and accused the US of exceeding its jurisdiction. In China’s case, the importance of reaching a bilateral trade deal with the US may outweigh the benefit of defiance. An agreement could be reached by the end of 2019, according to Citigroup. President Xi Jinping may be loath to create any cause for delay. Turkey has already strained relations with the US over its plans to buy a Russian missile-defense system. Continuing to buy Iranian crude would sour them further and even if the Turkish government wants to rebel against the sanctions Tupras, the country’s biggest refiner, may be less willing as it would bear the brunt of any American retaliation. That leaves India, South Korea and Japan, and they are already lobbying the White House. Even if Trump were to have a change of heart, he doesn’t have to capitulate fully. Trump was to agree a 25 percent reduction in the volume of oil allowed for purchase from Iran over the next six months that would still make his sanctions tougher than those of his predecessor. But if the president refuses to budge, then all three are likely to stop buying crude and condensate from Iran. They are already starting to toe the line into the sharp drop in Iranian exports. The US sees itself as able to get tougher with its sanctions because it believes oil markets are well-supplied, unlike in last year. Brian Hook, Special Representative for Iran, says all forecasts show the global supply of oil exceeding demand in 2019. That’s only true if OPEC boosts its overall output. The group’s production already has to increase by 250,000 barrels a day in the second half of 2019 compared with last month’s levels to balance the market, according to the Department of Energy’s latest forecast. All these moves of US over Iran are an obvious target of US to control its economic growth that would support Iran becoming nuclear country, as US administration fears.
