HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

PREFACE The Lagna denotes the body, and Sūrya and Candra are its Kāraka. Where Sūrya denotes one’s vitality, purpose and ambition, Candra’s denotes one health and mental state that must complement oneself for achieving life’s purpose. When the Lagneśa, Sūrya and Candra are powerful in a Kuṇḍalī, the person achieves great height and fulfils his ambition. A good physical, mental and emotional state is important for fulfilling life’s purpose. One’s sense of life’s direction, purpose and ambition are governed by the Lagneśa and Sūrya, and Candra supports him in achieving that. Undoubtedly, the Lagna, Sūrya and Candra are the three important pivots around which one’s life revolves. One enjoys good health when the Lagneśa s powerful in a Kuṇḍalī, and Candra is not afflicted. If both the Lagneśa and Candra are powerful, the person is freed from sicknesses, and even if he contracts one, he recovers fast. The body is subject to sicknesses when the Lagneśa is weak/afflicted. This can happen in several ways, i.e., the Lagneśa is in a Nīca/Śatru Rāśi/Añśa, Lagneśa is conjunct with Tamograhas, Śani, Maṅgala, Rāhu and Ketu; it is subject to Pāpakartari, Astāṅgata and defeated in Grahayuddha. While the Lagneśa protects one’s health, the ones damaging are the Ṣaṣṭheśa, Randhreśa and Vyāyeśa, commonly known as the Trikeśas. The 6 th bhāva/lord is responsible for physical injuries, wounds, boils and sicknesses caused by pathogens and insects. The 8th bhāva/lord denotes the body’s protective shield, and when it is weakened, the body is subject to defects and disabilities that arise from birth. 8th is connected with our negative Karmas of past lives, and therefore, it indicates sickness caused by physiological deficiencies, such as Hypertension, Immune deficiency, Cancer, Diabetes. The 12th is the house of loss and indicates loss of vitality. It does not show serious health troubles, but weaknesses! Health troubles occur during the Daśābhukti of a Graha that is hostile to the Lagneśa, the Lagneśa is in a Nīca/Śatru Rāśi/Añśa in Gocara, the Lagneśa joins with the Ṣaṣṭheśa/Randhreśa or when the Lagneśa is weak/afflicted otherwise. When Krūragrahas, viz., Śani, Maṅgala, Rāhu and Ketu traverse over the Lagneśa, the body suffers from ailments. It is through the judgement of several factors one should conclude. Change is eternal, and what is born must die. This brings us to the topic of longevity. The Maharṣis and Ācāryas of yore state that before judging a Kuṇḍalī, one must assess the longevity. Because, if one does not live through the time when a favourable Daśābhukti or Gocara can give their results, what is the use of having such yogas in the Kuṇḍalī. Only after estimating the longevity one must delineate the other aspects of the Kuṇḍalī. However, there are misconceptions that one must not see a Kuṇḍalī before 12 or 24 years of age. If that were so, how to decipher whether a child is born with Bālāriṣṭa yogas and need some remedial measures? What is the use of such yogas being delineated in the Śāstras? What is meant by the age of 12/24 is that it is not possible to estimate one’s longevity using normal longevity computation methods such as Piṇḍāyu, Añśāyu or Nakṣatrāyu. They

[V]

HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

require special estimation methods called the Bālāriṣṭa and Yogāriṣṭa. Only after one crosses 24, the other Āyuṣa methods become relevant. The first step in estimating longevity is to classify the Kuṇḍalī into one of the three brackets, Alpāyu, Madhyāyu or Dīrghāyu. There are several methods for doing this, and the most important among them is the method of the three lords. The Lagneśa, Randhreśa and Karmeśa are the protectors of longevity. When they are powerful in Ṣaḍbala, subject to Saumyayutidṛṣṭi, and they are Susthānas, they grant longevity. Estimate the longevity granted by each and find their average to arrive at a rough estimate of longevity. The next significant method is to use the three pairs as stated by Maharṣi Parāśara and Jaimini. The three pairs are Lagna-Horālagna, Lagneśa-Randhreśa and Śani-Candra. The Āyuṣa Kakṣā of each pair is to be known, and then the overall Āyuṣa is estimated. Dīrghāyu is Cara-Cara or Sthira-Ubhaya, Madhyāyu is Ubhaya-Ubhaya or Cara-Sthira and Alpāyu is Sthira-Sthira or Cara-Ubhaya. If the Āyuṣa Kakṣā is the same in any of the two pairs, that prevails. If it is different for all three, then the Candra-Śani pair prevails when Candra is in the 1-7 axis; else, the Lagna-Horālagna pair prevails. There are several other methods of longevity estimation, and they are thoroughly examined in the book. Certain Daśās must complement the longevity estimation methods for narrowing it down. The important among them is Brahmā Daśā, besides Viñśottarī, Śūla, Niryāṇa Śūla and Navāñśa Daśās. There are other Daśās, such as Sthira etc., not covered here and are a topic of future books. I have demonstrated with numerous examples how the longevity estimation methods can be used along with the Daśās to arrive at finite longevity! This book is meant for someone who wishes to deepen their understanding regarding the cause of diseases, their nature, and timing. This covers the topic of healing and electing a good time for that. A complex disease is treated using a holistic healing system, including western medicine, Āyurveda, Siddha Medicine, Naturopathy, Aromatherapy, appropriate food habits, Mantra Jāpa, Dāna, changes to the lifestyle etc., it increases the likelihood of being healed. According to Jyotiṣa, and the Karma Vipāka Saṅhitā of Sāyanācārya, diseases are caused because of the negative Karmas committed in the past lives. They occur when a Graha is afflicted in a Kuṇḍalī, and the negative Karma can be traced to the Kārakatvas of the Graha. For instance, if someone had negative Karmas about women, Śukra is likely to be badly placed in the Kuṇḍalī this life, and the person is subject to urinary ailments and diabetes. Therefore, besides taking the medicines, which help with the symptoms, one must undertake reconciliatory Karmas to overcome the blemishes caused by the past birth negative Karmas. The book contains several combinations of diseases, and it is hardly possible to remember every such combination. Therefore, it is advisable to be observant while examining a Kuṇḍalī for sicknesses and their cure. One may

[VI]

HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

refer to the yogas defined in the book and other classical texts but must keep an open and exploratory mind and thus, derive their conclusions. It is possible to grasp the yogas without memorising every yoga with practice and patience. Ultimately, a wise Jyotiṣa learns more than one’s experience by reading books. Books can only guide but learning only comes from experience! This book starts as a good starting point for those who wish to build their expertise in Cikitsā Jyotiṣa (medical astrology) and longevity estimation. This is, however, not the end because examination of each disease calls for a more detailed treatment. When time permits, I wish to publish my works on some complex diseases such as Cancer, Aids, Diabetes etc., that ruin people’s lives, and their early detection can be of great boon to the world. I wish to publish a volume containing numerous case studies giving practical guidance on dealing with such diseases. Of course, when time permits! Sarajit Poddar (Varāhamihira)

HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

ABOUT ME I am an earnest seeker of Jyotiṣa, having an unquenching thirst for learning this discipline. I am born Dhanu Lagna, Vṛścika Rāśi and Anurādhā Nakṣatra, on a Navamī Tithi, when Bṛhaspati was in Kumbha, Śani, in Mithuna, and Sūrya, in Siṅha. I stepped into the world of Jyotiṣa in 1988, in my thirteenth year, and after that, guided by the divine providence, to study it seriously. I was guided by my paternal uncle and my first Jyotiṣa Guru, Śrī Manoj Kānti Poddar, an accomplished Jyotiṣaśastri and a Śakti Sādhaka. My father was also a Śakti Sādhaka and an accomplished Palmist. Therefore, I was born into a family of Jyotiṣīs and Śakti Sādhakas, and Jyotiṣa is running down my family lineage. I studied palmistry from 1988 to 1993 seriously, and eventually, in 1993, I got introduced to Jyotiṣa through Dr BV Raman’s astrological magazine. I commenced my learning through the astrological magazine for months. After that, it continued through a Bengali edition of Bṛhatparāśara and Sarvārtha Cintāmaṇi that my uncle gave me. During my initial years, I learned immensely from Dr Raman’s books, Hindu Predictive Astrology and How to Judge a Kuṇḍalī Vol I and II. In 1999, Pt Sanjay Rath accepted me as his student, an event that I always cherish. It was the beginning of learning advanced Jyotiṣa. From him, I learnt several advance topics, including Āruṛhas, Argalās, Vargas, Tithi Praveśa Cakra etc. His books, Crux of Vedic Astrology: Timing of Events and Jaimini Maharṣi’s Upadeśa Sūtras, remained my constant companion for several years. In my studies spanning over thirty-three years, I always endeavoured to uncover the hidden meaning behind the ślokas and sūtras and reconcile the principles across several classical texts. My search slowly took the shape of this book, which is why I named it “In Search of Jyotiṣa”. I started penning down my thoughts and experiences in a blog, “http://varahamihira.blogspot.com/” from 2004, and later continued to write in other mediums such as Facebook, Medium.com, and LinkedIn.com. I kept my pen name as Varāhamihira in honour of the great Jyotiṣaśastri who adorned the court of King Vikramāditya as one of his Navaratnas (nine jewels). Who am I? It is difficult to say who I am. Different people see me in so many different ways. From my viewpoint, I am a soul trapped inside the world of illusion! I am not a Pundit, Ācārya, Guru, who claims to be a master of this discipline. I am merely a seeker who wishes to share his observations and experiences with like-minded seekers. I encountered numerous challenges navigating the arduous path of Jyotiṣa. In this book, I am narrating my reflections with a sincere prayer so it could be of some help to others in their journey. Sarajit Poddar (Varāhamihira)

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT First and foremost, I would like to thank my dear friend Śrī Senthil Ananth for his painstaking effort in proofreading and editing the manuscript. His critical assessment and suggestions always help me improve my writing. Besides, the encouragement of my readers is truly encouraging. Their feedback on my Facebook page and forums and their reviews on Amazon give me the energy to keep pushing. It is an exceedingly tough job to keep writing continuously and widely on a subject, and when the readers appreciate this, that gives immense encouragement and energy. Firstly, I would like to mention here Śrī Anil Gidwani, who was the first to point out the areas of improvement in the books after the first two volumes were published. His critical comments on the font size and readability, content, chart type, index of contents etc., helped me decide on my upcoming publications. I could not incorporate all his suggestions, but I did where I could. I appreciate the reviews of my readers on Amazon. One of them is from Ashwin Shriram. The following is his review of Book2, “The Kārakatvas”. I have been following the blog writings of Sarajit Poddar ji for a few years now and that was my earliest impression and experience of the author. I had been deeply impressed by the clarity, authenticity, dedication to detail and depth that were visible in his writings. His writing clearly conveys the passion and reverence he has for the subject. The author would always cite classical references in his work wherever possible, which is a practice that I wish all other astrologers would also pursue since the primary source of our learning comes from those classical references. So when I found out that apart from his blogs, Sarajit ji was busy writing books on Jyotish, I knew I had to get them. I knew it was going to be worth their weight. I have only recently purchased the first two books in the series and only just started reading this book, so I cannot go into the specifics of the book yet although I glanced through the pages (I might consider adding points to this review later after reading the book) but based on initial impressions I can say it is a comprehensive book on kārakatvas- it doesn’t miss out on any important detail relevant to the topic. It is probably the most thorough book I have come across with regards to this topic- i.e. kārakatvas. If you are a serious student of Jyotish then I would definitely recommend you get your hands on it. The copy of the book I received came in good condition (just some minor bents were visible on the edges of the cover pages but the inside pages look proper). I sense that someday universities teaching Jyotish to students would be recommending this book (and this series) in their curriculum to their students. It is that good.

I still have a long way to go, and I hope that my work will be liked by the Jyotiṣa community and help an earnest seeker. Thank you, Sarajit Poddar

7.1 HEALTH

T

he acclaimed yoga teacher Śrī BKS Iyengar states, “Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.” The Lagna and Candralagna signify our physical body. Like, without Lagna, Bhāvas do not exist; without body, one’s life does not exist. Even though the Ātmā is not born and never dies1, one’s existence in this world commences with the formation of the body in the mother’s womb. The Kuṇḍalī is cast when the body is formed in the womb (conception) or separated from the mother’s body (birth). Both can help us decipher one’s destiny and life’s experiences. The body, however, is subject to several forces, positive and negative. The level of discomfort the body is subjected to is seen from the Lagna. The discomfort is caused by sickness, laborious work, or lack of care for the body. According to Bṛhatparāśara 12.1-22, when Lagneśa is conjoined with Pāpagrahas or occupies the Dusthāna (8-6-12), there is a decline of physical comforts. However, when Lagneśa occupies a Kendrakoṇa, there are bodily comforts. When Lagneśa is Nīca/Śatru Rāśi or Asta, the body is subject to ill-health. Saumyas in Kendrakoṇa gives protection from diseases. In Bṛhatparāśara 12.33, Maharṣi Parāśara states that there are no bodily comforts when Lagna or Candra are yuti-dṛṣṭi with Krūras and devoid of Śubha dṛṣṭi. For bodily comforts and discomforts, the following conditions must be present.

1 Śrīmad Bhagavadgītā 2.20: na jayate mriyate va kadacin। nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah। ajo nityah sasvato ‘yam purano। na hanyate hanyamane sarire॥ For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying, and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain. 2 Bṛhatparāśara 12.1-2. सपापो देहपोऽष्टाररव्र्यर्यगो देहसौख्र्यहृत्। के ्रे कोणे स्वितोऽङ् गेशिः सदा देहसुखं स्दशेत॥् १॥ sapāpo dehapo’ṣṭārivyayago dehasaukhyahṛt. kendre koṇe sthito’ṅgeśaḥ sadā dehasukhaṁ diśet..1.. लग्नपोऽवतङ् गतो नीचे शत्रुभे रोगकृ द् भवेत।् शुभिः के ्रस्त्रकोणविा सववरोगहरािः वमृतािः॥२॥ lagnapo’staṅgato nīce śatrubhe rogakṛd bhavet । śubhaḥ kendratrikoṇasthā sarvarogaharāḥ smṛtāḥ ..2.. 3 Bṛhatparāśara 12.3. लग्ने च्रेऽिव क्रूरग्रहैर्दवष्टऽे िवा र्युते। शुभर्दस्ष्टस्वहीने च ज्तोदेहसुखं न स्ह॥ ३॥ lagne candre’thava krūragrahairdṛṣṭe’thavā yute. śubhadṛṣṭivihīne ca jantordehasukhaṁ na hi..3..
