Tribute To Shakespeare Others abide our question. Thou art free We ask and ask – Thou smilest and art still, Out-topping knowledge. For the loftiest hill, Who to the stars uncrowns his majesty, Planting his steadfast footsteps in the sea, Making the heaven of heavens his dwelling place, Spares but the cloudy border of his base To the foiled searching of mortality; And thou, who didst the stars and sunbeams know, Self-schooled, self-scanned, self-honoured, self-secure, Didst tread on earth unguessed at - Better So! All pains the immortal spirit must endure, All weakness which impairs, all griefs which bow, Find their sole speech in that victorious brow.

Introduction William Shakespeare is an ever glittering star in the world of literature. Among all languages, English continues to enjoy a proud and prestigious status for which the contributions of William Shakespeare are highly commendable. His expressions are the greatest treasures that the whole world is proud to be in possession of. The beauty of English can be felt by heart while reading William Shakespeare. He is one of the greatest dramatists that the world has ever produced. Reading of Shakespearean plays makes one feel that Shakespeare is yet to be discovered and rediscovered. William Shakespeare’s expressions, besides enriching one’s language skills, create some sort of linguistic spirit that can be felt by passionate readers. He has expressions for all ages and for all occasions. English without Shakespearean expressions is like a garden without flowers. We got freedom from the English in 1947, but we never wish to get freedom from Shakespeare, for his expressions uniquely enslave us and enable us to use words and expressions so freely, so creatively that boundaries cannot be thought of. Greatest stalwarts in every field and greatest leaders everywhere have never failed to quote William Shakespeare. Authors in thousands have paid rich tributes to William Shakespeare. Self-schooled, self-scanned, self-honoured, self-secure, William Shakespeare still remains as an amazing mystic in the world of literature. The world of Science is nothing without outstanding scientists like Isaac Newton, Thomas Alva Edison and Albert Einstein; the world of philosophy is nothing without outstanding philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle and the world of literature is nothing without outstanding literary figures like William Shakespeare and John Milton. He stands tall in the annals of history with his unique expressions in English.

INTRODUCTION

Great wits must never get wasted in the street. The perfumes of Arabia must never lose its flavour. The expressions of William Shakespeare must not stay just on the pages of books unread or rarely read or read for securing some grade in examinations, but must be got imprinted in minds. The edge of appetite cannot be cloyed by bare imagination of a royal feast, and use of beautiful expressions in English cannot be just thought of or imagined without having a taste for Shakespearean expressions. Though the advancements of technology are highly remarkable, and have their own advantages in acquisition of knowledge, too much impact of the same in acquisition of language skills poses threat to the use of King’s or Queen’s English that was highly glorified in the days gone. Frequent use of SMS language even in formal contexts and use of e-language have made communication easy, but the beauty of language can be felt only while reading books on literature. “Old is gold” is a proverb. The authors have collected some of the most quoted and most quotable expressions from all Shakespeare’s comedies with the passionate desire to get the minds of young learners filled with Shakespearean expressions and to enable them to explore more such expressions. The authors have given readers sample sentences following Shakespearean expressions. This attempt has been made to kindle the linguistic spirit of young learners in the hope that at least a few among many would further explore expressions not only from Shakespeare, but also from other great writers of English.
