WHAT IS SHIFTWORK? Shift work refers to a work schedule that is performed in rotations. For example, while some employees might fill a role during the day, others might work night or early morning shifts. This means the company operates for 24 hours each day. Whereas some employees may work various eight-hour shifts throughout the week, others might work all their hours for the week within three days and have the next four days off. There are various ways to schedule shifts.

HEALTHY TIPS • Cluster night shifts together.

• Stick to a routine. • Get your household on board. • Practice good sleep hygiene. • Prioritize sleep. • Eat healthy. • Stay hydrated. • Nap effectively.

TYPES OF SHIFTS

DAY SHIFT: Day shift employees work during daytime hours, often from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. NIGHT SHIFT: Also known as the graveyard shift, employees on this schedule work during the night, for example, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. SPLIT SHIFT: Split shift workers perform their job duties during two separate shifts on the same day. For example, they might work 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., have a four-hour break and resume work from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. SWING SWIFT: Employees who work a swing shift start their day during the afternoon. COLD/FLU/COVID

WHAT IS DIFFERENCE The signs and symptoms of COVID-19 may seem non-specific and somewhat similar to those associated with the common cold or influenza. This table shows the difference and similarities.

COLD

While you may feel miserable when you have a cold, the symptoms are generally mild compared to more aggressive viruses like the flu. A cold can cause any or all of these symptoms: • Runny or stuffy nose. • Cough (mild). • Fatigue (sometimes). • Sneezing. • Watery eyes. • Sore throat. • Headaches (rarely). • Aches and pains.

Waymaker SHE Support Services

FLU

Seasonal influenza (flu) is still active and generally comes on fast and furious. It’s a common respiratory infection caused by a virus that affects your nose, throat, and lungs and can last from 5 to 7 days. Here’s are some common symptoms of the flu: • Fever and/or chills. • Cough (usually dry). • Fatigue. • Aches and pains. • Runny or stuffy nose (sometimes), • Sore throat (sometimes), • Diarrhea (sometimes in children),

COVID

Coronavirus, or COVID-19, is a new strain of coronavirus not previously seen in humans that is spreading quickly worldwide. Four other strains of coronavirus are actually very common and usually only cause mild symptoms (like the common cold). However, some strains, like COVID-19, can cause severe illness in certain groups. For example, older people and people of all ages with severe underlying health conditions — like heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes, for example — seem to be at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness. There’s currently no cure or vaccine for COVID-19.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include: • Fever and/or chills, • Cough (usually dry), • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, • Tiredness (sometimes), • Aches and pains (sometimes), • Headaches (sometimes), • Sore throat (sometimes),

WHOLE BODY VIBRATION WHAT IS WHOLE BODY VIBRATION? Whole-body vibration (WBV) is transmitted through the seat or feet of employees who drive mobile machines, or other work vehicles, over rough and uneven surfaces as a main part of their job. Large shocks and jolts may cause health risks including back-pain.

PREVENTION HEALTH EFFECTS

Whole-body vibration can cause fatigue, stomach problems, headache, loss of balance and “shakiness” shortly after or during exposure. The symptoms are similar to those that many people experience after a long car or boat trip.

Waymaker SHE Support Services

• Limit the time spent by workers on a vibrating surface. • Mechanically isolate the vibrating source or surface to reduce exposure. • Ensure that equipment is well maintained to avoid excessive vibration. • Install vibration damping seats.
