Abigail Ahern has been hailed as an international tastemaker, a style disruptor with a daring approach to design and a fierce pioneer of a dark inky palette. In this, her second collection of curtains, Roman blinds and cushions with window dressing experts, Hillarys, she reveals her lighter side.

Soft caramels, dusky hues, mid-tone prints and textural plains coexist harmoniously with the depth and drama of her trademark bottom of the lake hues, displayed in tantalisingly textural boucle, super-glam velvet and cool, comforting cord fabrics. “As a designer I am constantly evolving, pushing boundaries and trying different things rather than staying in the same lane,” says Abigail. “It was important to create a collection that looks as beautiful with pale walls as it does with dark. It reflects a shift to a mid-tone palette but retains my signature obsession with moody seductive shades and powerful texture.” “Fashion and travel inspire me. The new fabrics take their cue from the rediscovery of corduroy

and boucle as fashionable textiles and the dusky collection of colourways walking the runway. “Organic camouflage motifs conjure up images of rippling sandy beaches and the Berber diamond design brings a Moroccan infused vibe.” The collection introduces ten sumptuous new fabrics, includes seven of the most loved fabrics from our first collection and reimagines three of the best-selling designs in a lighter palette. All are available as curtains, Roman blinds and cushion covers. Customers can add ‘a touch of Abigail’ to their homes, whether their style is maximalist or minimalist, colourful or pared back, while keeping a look that’s unique and personal to them.

Q & A WITH ABIGAIL AHERN Considered one of the hottest designers in the UK, Abigail Ahern is a product designer, author, retailer, interior designer, and all round champion of a different approach to interiors. She’s famous for shaking up the interior design world with her signature inky hues, faux flowers and glamourous eclectic style; earning her a reputation as the “queen of cool interiors.” Hannah Cooley, product manager, Hillarys, caught up with Abigail to talk trends, inspiration and why her latest collaboration will take window dressings to a whole new level. (Below, right.)

We are super-excited about our second collaboration together. What can people expect? In a nutshell - ‘snuggle-tastic’ textiles, beautiful silhouettes and a lighter colour palette. I’m obsessed with texture, it adds such interest to a room and is often the most underconsidered component. People seldom think about how things feel just how they look. So I’m super excited about the gorgeous tactile fabrics we’re bringing into the collection – soft, nubby boucle, comforting corduroy and Moroccan inspired Berber. It may surprise people to see a lighter, mid-tone palette juxtaposed with my trademark inky hues.

BEHIND THE SCENES...

A whole new level of cosiness! Texture is everything when you want to feel cocooned in your home and this collection brings it in spades. Fashion was a strong source of inspiration. A real favourite on the catwalk, bouclé has been used for decades for a cosy yet on-trend look. Now, this luxurious, soft curly fabric dials up the drama in the home. And, no longer a hang-over of seventies style, cord has made a serious comeback both into our wardrobes and our interiors. Offering the same inviting texture and sheen of velvet, it has such a homely, warm feel. You’re renowned for your ‘bottom of the lake’ inky palette, why are you introducing a mid-tone palette? I’m enjoying mixing in softer tones with my signature darker accents. It was important to create a collection and palette that works with pale or dark walls and speaks to both the die-hard ‘Abigail’ aficionado and those customers who want a touch of Abigail in their home. Caramel, clay and soft pink are restorative colours, hues that are tranquil, restful and calm and embrace a laid-back way of living. What features make the collection special? We’ve gone to town on the embellishments; my style is described as quite masculine but six coloured fringes bring a flourish of femininity and bold colour to the collection. The other key touch is coloured linings for curtains. It’s a game changer. Why shouldn’t your home look as amazing from the outside as it does inside? We’ve been forced to slow down and spend time in our homes; for many, this has resulted in a desire to create spaces that are driven by our senses. What do you think our senses will be drawn to in 2023? In interiors everything starts with the visual. When we step into a room our senses are triggered and beautiful tactile fabrics instantly make us feel comforted and restored. In 2023 and beyond this will only increase as we travel more and start experiencing other cultures once again. I know every time I travel I want to come home and create a sanctuary with similar sensations to buffer us from the outside world. My new collection with Hillarys absolutely does that!
