"Love goes where it pleases and it pleases wherever it goes."

FOREWORD Love exists as a daily reminder that life is not all about rainbows and butterflies, it does not merely revolve around joy and camaraderie but it also entails excruciating pain and sadness, which many people attempted to avoid. Similarly, love embodies the sea of emotions that many people find troublesome and difficult to express; it unfolds the utopia created by each person's imagination. These and many other characteristics define love. Love teaches us the reality of life, how we need love as much as we need air to breathe, how to understand one's sorrow, how to value the relationships we form every day, and how to accept that not everyone in our lives will stay. I am grateful and proud of all of our contributors. Proud of your passionate heart as you write about a topic that many may find difficult or challenging to comprehend; proud of your unwavering commitment to finally step outside of your comfort zones; and proud of your hard work in creating your own literary pieces. “Agape: The Collective” is more than just a literary work; it is a reflection of each writer's own perception of love. I hope our fellow writers will continue to write about what makes their hearts happy and light. I wish you well and hope to see more of your beautifully written literary works in the future. And to you, dear readers, who are about to embark on a journey through this collection of literary masterpieces, may you open your hearts and minds to what our writers have in store for each one of you.

ABOUT THE BOOK This folio contains "Agape: The Collective," an anthology of writings from BSIT 2105. It follows the phases of love that humans can experience. It is also a reminder to let love embrace us, burn us, change us, and make us beam. This book was written in fulfillment of the subject, Asean Literature. It is the result of the effort and wholehearted dedication of this project's assigned leaders, writers, illustrators, editors, and proofreaders.

Phase I. Euphoria (Extreme Happiness) Nothing can truly compare to the happiness that fills our hearts, knowing that we are finally basking in the love and appreciation we truly deserve. It is simple: Love is tethered to happiness. Happiness is tethered to Love. Phase II. Truth Untold (What Lies Beyond?) Love will not always equate to the ideals in our minds. It disappoints us when love shows its true self; we put it on a pedestal so high that we convince ourselves that we don't deserve love at all. Phase III. Misery (Breaking Point) Every ounce of pain and misery is worth it when it comes to love, they say. But love? It breaks us in ways we could never translate into words. It deceives us, even. Making us believe that only love is the answer to everything. Phase IV. Saudade (Loneliness) Deep inside of us is an empty void and feeling that people do not often talk about as much. We could forever wander, but the world will never cease to pat us on the back and grieve for us. We only got ourselves to propel us ahead. Phase V. Acceptance (Loving thy self) There will be times when our pursuit of love leads us to dead ends and closed roads, making it hard for us to accept that it is really the end. But is it really the end? Letting go of something isn’t really a loss. It’s a gain to make space for better things to come.

May the writings of this book reach its destined readers and may they grasp the significance of this lovely banquet. With great feelings and thoughts, may love be found at the nib of our quills. Somewhere, Under the Starry Sky Janine B. Lansangan

It was a starry evening in the month of December. Arth rushes to school because she is already late for her best friend's band performance. Given that time is running out, she decides to run as fast as she can to get to the school's gymnasium. She ignores the cold breeze and tries desperately to get to where she needs to go. “What's the deal with this line? Zeo didn't give me a VIP ticket, ugh.” Arth mumbled to herself. She rolled her eyes heavenwards as she tried to calm herself. Right there and then, the crowd started cheering. “Oh my! They’re already here!” “I love you guys!” “Zeo! You’re my favorite bassist!” Arth smirked when she heard the final cheer. She can't keep the sarcasm from coming out. She looks at the girl next to her and raises one of her brows to intimidate her. The girl, on the other hand, paid no attention to her because she was clearly preoccupied with the presence of the bassist.

05 | SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY

SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY | 05

Favorite bassist, huh? As if on cue, Arth heard a familiar deep voice calling her from a distance. She turned to face that person, and her sarcasm was heightened by seeing her best friend so proud and happy. She abruptly left the line, unconcerned about the other girls' side comments. She went straight to Zeo, her best friend, becoming slightly self-conscious of her appearance. His bright smile made her smile as well. Her irritation and sarcasm vanished in an instant. There was something about Zeo that made her feel at ease. It's always been that way for her. “You’re quite late, huh? I thought you'd miss the chance to see me play the bass guitar again." Zeo remarked as he reached for Arth's handkerchief to wipe her sweat. He noticed how Arth broke out in cold sweat. Zeo imagined Arth rushing out of the house that evening so that she could watch him play. The thought made him smile. “Says the person who failed to give me a VIP ticket.” Arth backfired. “The line’s too long, it’ll take me forever to get inside.” "Oh, you're putting the blame on me now?" Zeo sarcastically laughed as Arth raised her brow at him. “Anyway, who needs a VIP ticket when you've got me? Come on, I'll give you the best seat in the house." Zeo remarked jokingly. He grabbed Arth's hand and led her through the gymnasium, finally giving her a seat in the front row. Best seat, indeed. 06 | SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY

SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY | 06

"Are you sure I'm permitted to sit here? I didn't even get to give my ticket at the door." Arth said. Puzzled by what’s happening. "I reserved that seat for you, okay? Relax now. I need to go backstage because the performance starts in five minutes. Prepare yourself." Without further explanation, Zeo left Arth alone. The girl then heaves out a sigh. "What is causing my heart to beat so quickly? Am I still tired from all the running I did earlier? ” Arth was so preoccupied with what had happened earlier that she nearly screamed when the lights went out, along with the deafening sound of the crowd's cheer. When she saw her best friend standing on that stage, looking so confident and holding the guitar he once tried to get rid of, memories flashed back. There was a time when Zeo refused to pick up that bass guitar again. Zeo became disoriented shortly after the death of his father, who was the sole reason he developed an interest in music. He appeared to have lost all motivation to continue playing. But everything changed when Arth gave him a new reason to keep going. Arth was overcome with emotion as she watched her best friend perform. She can't contain her emotions: proud is an understatement for how she feels right now.

07 | SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY

SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY | 07

The show lasted nearly two hours. Arth patiently waited outside the gymnasium for Zeo, who had promised to accompany her home. Arth smiled as she looked up at the sky. The stars twinkled and shone brightly. It brought back so many memories for her that her smile grew wider. “You look beautiful tonight. Are you aware of that?” She flinched upon hearing that deep and familiar voice. Her heart thumped so hard that she was in a trance for a few seconds. “I’m completely aware of that.” She tries to maintain her confidence. As he sits beside her, he laughs. Arth then grabs the bass guitar, almost dropping it when her gaze meets Zeo's. "After everything that happened, I never thought I'd be holding that guitar again. It's actually pretty cool and enjoyable; it's been a roller coaster ride. I'm still scared, but your mere presence takes all my fears away.” Zeo let out the words that he wanted to say all this time. Arth was left speechless as she tries to look for the right words to say. Zeo will always be grateful for Arth. As soon as Arth regained her composure, she immediately replied. Still trying to avoid any awkward moments between them. “Yeah, I’m actually very proud of you. You are and will always be my favorite bassist. It makes me wonder what you had in your heart when you were playing on stage earlier. You looked so immersed in what you’re doing.” She said as she gave the bass guitar back to Zeo. 08| SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY

SOMEWHERE, UNDER THE STARRY SKY | 08

“You really want to know? Then, ask me again.” He smiled widely. “So, what did you have in your heart while you were playing that bass guitar?” Arth asked once again. “I had you.” The air was deafeningly quiet. The two simply stared at each other for who knows how long, with genuine smiles plastered on their faces. Somewhere, under the starry sky, words need not be said. Somewhere, under the starry sky, two heart’s found their half. Somewhere, under the starry sky, a new chapter will begin.

(This may be) A Poem about Love Marielle A. Coronel

How do you write a poem about Love? It cannot be taught and is beyond words’ power of depiction It has no place to be, as all places are filled with Love Without Love, what else will matter? Love is what unites Love is what flows Love is what counts Love is what grows Love is all around Love is all about Love is all we ask Love is all we give Love wants nothing Love needs nothing Love misses nothing Love is what this is all about Uniting, flowing, counting, Growing, knowing around, About asking, giving, having All is Love Of that, I have no doubt

Extreme Happiness Iverson L. Amante

Children, people walking, and trees getting struck by sunlight. These are the only things I can see with my naked eyes right now as I decide to take a walk in our nearby park. I needed to find something here. Well, maybe one thing: peace. As I stared at the trees, I remember waking up because sunlight struck my face. “Ah, I forgot to close the curtains last night,” I mumbled to myself as soon as I opened my eyes. I decided to get up and wash my face, as I could still feel the heat after getting struck by sunlight. It wasn’t exactly painful, but I actually felt different. The light hitting my face made me realize something. It was like saying that today would be different and that the morning I needed would appear. “Maybe I should take a walk in the park first,” I said, hopeful that today would be different from my previous days of feeling so monotonous. The noise from the children laughing made me go back to the present. I continued walking and stopped when I saw a dog barking at me. It was barking, but not in a dangerous way. It was barking as if it needed my help. I started walking toward it, and it immediately licked my face. I smiled. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this way.

14 | EXTREME HAPPINESS

EXTREME HAPPINESS | 14

I lost my dog years ago, and I still can’t find one who can replace him. I patted the dog and noticed that no one was with it. As I continued patting it, I saw a tag named “Eros”. “Eros, huh? That’s the God of Love. Interesting, but where’s your owner, Eros?” I asked him, but he kept barking and sticking his tongue out. “Cute,” I whispered. I sat next to it, hoping its owner would be coming soon, but an hour passed, and it seemed like no one was interested in finding him. I returned my gaze to Eros, staring at me as if he wanted me to take him and feed him. “You’re hungry?” I asked him. He began to bark and wag his tail. “Yeah, you’re hungry, but I can’t take you. Your owner might come back.” I answered back. I began asking around to see if any were nearby. They are saying the same thing. “Ah, a woman, my boy. I saw a woman with that dog.” “I saw someone with that dog, but it wasn’t there. I think that dog was lost. By the way, it was a woman.” This park was huge, and the possibility of her finding this dog was low, mainly because maybe this dog ran away the moment he got unleashed. I came back, and I saw the dog running. “Yeah, that explains why he got lost, too,” I said while looking at it as it got farther away from me. I squinted my eyes and saw that he had jumped into someone. I panicked and started running to it. 15 | EXTREME HAPPINESS

EXTREME HAPPINESS | 15

“He definitely didn’t attack someone, right?” I said that and started to gasp for air as I was running while saying it. I slowly stopped running as I got closer. He’s licking that woman’s face. “Yeah. That’s definitely his owner.” I smiled while looking at them. I was about to turn around when I heard him bark. It was close, and as I turned around, Eros jumped up and licked my face. I started laughing and patted his head. “Hi? Sorry. Are you the one who accompanied him while he was lost?” I heard while playing with the dog. I immediately stopped and started to clean my shirt. I looked up and saw this beautiful woman. Her hair was shoulder length and looked lovely as it caught the light. She was smiling as she offered her hand to me. I grabbed it as we stared back at each other. “Yeah. It was me. I found him there.” I pointed to the place where I found Eros. “He was alone, so I thought he might need some company.” I continued. She smiled at me. It was the most comforting smile I’ve seen. I immediately looked away and started to tell myself that this was wrong. I don’t believe in love at first sight. I began to gather myself. “I think it’s time for me to go home. Please take care of him next time. Nice name, by the way.” I said that and started walking. Yeah. This is the right thing. I am not here to find “love.” I was here to find peace, and love is definitely not how to find it. I scratched my head when I thought of the word “love.”

16 | EXTREME HAPPINESS

EXTREME HAPPINESS | 16

“We just met, and yet I’m already thinking about love. How come?” I laughed but immediately got cut off by a soft voice. “Hi? Are you busy? Maybe we can hang out for a little while. “How about a walk?” She smiled after saying that. There’s no way she ran after me. “I just want to thank you, you know? I just think I owe you a big one.” I began to speak to her as if hypnotized by her presence. When I looked at Eros, he was sticking his tongue out again. “Yeah, sure. I’m not busy anyway. I can spare some time with you... and your dog, Eros.” I said. Yeah, that’s definitely awkward. She smiled again and started to pat Eros, and then they walked. I also began to walk beside them. I don’t know what to say. We just walked silently, and I was busy looking at our surroundings to hide that I couldn’t start a conversation. “So, do you live near here?” She broke the silence. Thank God. “Yeah. I live so near here that I’m just walking to go here and jog.” I answered. What’s wrong with me? My heart started to pound fast. “Same! Maybe we’re just neighbors, and you just don’t see me because you look like someone who goes out once a year,” she said and then laughed. Yeah, she was right, I guess. It’s been a long time since I went out and walked. “I’m just kidding. You know, just to lighten the atmosphere between us,” she said after. Maybe, he noticed that I became more silent and awkward. “No, it’s fine. You’re right, though. It’s been a long time since I went out.” I said, then looked at her.

17 | EXTREME HAPPINESS

EXTREME HAPPINESS | 17

I started to notice the features of her face. She was indeed pretty. She has a pointed nose. long lashes, and soft lips. I also noticed that she has three moles on her face. One on her nose bridge, one on the lower left cheek, and one on the chin. It wasn’t ruining her face. It was perfect and made her more beautiful. She stared back at me, and her eyes were brown. It was mesmerizing and familiar at once. “How are you, Khael?” I was snapped back to reality when I heard her say my name. I was confused and amazed at the same time. How? “You know me?” I asked. Maybe that’s why she looked familiar. Perhaps I had seen her before or even knew her. I just forgot because of what I’ve been through. “Yes. I know you. I was a bit sad that you didn’t recognize Eros and me. He was your birthday and farewell gift to me when I decided to study abroad.” I was looking down and immediately looked at her. Everything came back to me. “You’re Amber?” I asked her, but I knew it was her. I don’t know what to feel, but I can only think of the one who once brought me happiness. Perhaps she was the light I’d been looking for a long time. Maybe all I needed was love all along.

In the four corners of the room Your eyes evidently bloom Silently wishing I could zoom To the depth of those eyes blooming with gloom Your laugh echoes in my ears Whenever you do, it almost brings you to tears I admire the way the crowd clears As you start giggling in sheers I love hearing you sing For every song, my heart skips a beat You do not know the joy you bring Makes me fall deeper into a pit Your whole presence is iridescent I don’t know why. I cannot stop admiring With you, there is never a dull moment Do I like you? I would be lying.

Truth Untold: What Lies Beyond?

Broken Chronograph Janine B. Lansangan

Time has always been limited Nonstop chase, that’s the case Running endlessly, it’s unprecedented For what’s to come, you need to brace When there’s not much time left today Everything finds its place and leaves Even people go astray The feelings start to deceive Despite the passage of time There are words kept in the dark The wind starts blowing the window chime Along with the sound, two people lost their spark Everything’s taken, and now what’s left? Like the two hands of the clock, Feelings linger in the same place Your feet start to walk Craving to go back to the beginning Stop the time like a broken chronograph Inevitably, the clock is ticking Now realized, you’ll move forward without your half Although it might be hard and tiring

They, Us, You, Me Cheneill Carlisle R. Saltoc

They say it's bad, bad, bad to have sex with someone you are not yet married to. But whenever your eyes roll back in pleasure, all I know is it's so good, good, good.

They say alcohol is bad for your health, but it's the only thing that salvages the little amount of sanity I have left during anxiety.

They warn us not to smoke, but I have learned the taste of cigarettes whenever I bite your lips and inhale your scent.

They tell us it's a sin to fall in love with someone way older, someone belonging to the same sex, or someone who doesn't fit the standards society sets.

But actual sin comes not from love but from hating andcriticizing.

Let them blindly dictate what they think is right for as long as we enjoy what they deem wrong.

Eyes Don't Lie Kent Aldrin L. Roxas

Finally, my classmate in high school from the batch of 2016 decided to have a reunion. I’ve never been more excited like this before. Even though my long-term ex has ghosted me and may attend the reunion, I still want to go. While I was on my way to where the reunion will take place, I wondered what would happen if my ex and I bumped into each other. Would we feel awkward after a long period of not communicating? My mind is confused as I remember how we first met. Back then, in high school, I was always alone and just focused on my studies. The first day Via transferred to my school, I saw her eyes shine and glimpse at me. My heart beat so fast, as if it were running, as she sat beside me because I didn’t have a seatmate. Via has a great sense of humor, so I can catch up even though I’m used to being alone. I think she is not challenging to be with. As the days go by, our bond gets more profound, and that bond turns out to be a relationship. She was accommodating, particularly regarding how to communicate with others and be friendly. It turns out I’m good at making other people happy. When I’m with her, I can truly express myself. But our relationship has flaws too.

25 | EYES DON'T LIE

EYES DON'T LIE | 25

I’m a jealous person because I know that there are a lot of people who have a crush on Via. But she always makes me feel like I don’t have to worry about it. I remember what she said to me every time we had an argument that I could just look into her eyes because the eyes don’t lie. We overcome all the struggles and problems together. Not until we graduated she told me that her family would take her to another country with them. At first, I thought our relationship would not work, but by calling and emailing each other, we could continue our relationship, even though it is an LDR. But months and years later, I didn’t know why she was no longer replying to my emails or answering my calls. The last time we received a call, it was entirely normal for us. She is so happy like there is no problem with her, and I notice when we call, she always tells me that her eyes never lie, so I shouldn’t worry, and if there’s a problem, I can notice it by just looking into her eyes. Until now, I haven’t heard anything about her. That’s why I’m so nervous and curious about what would happen if I saw her at the reunion. My best friend from high school called as I was getting out of my car to go to the reunion, and I forgot to answer. That’s why I wondered why he called me. Walking through the restaurant door, I saw a girl with long hair and beautiful eyes. As I saw her, I reminisced about all the events that happened to me with Via in my high school days. I tried to wave and say hi to her, but she didn’t notice me. My best friend reached out to me and said that the girl was Via, and I didn’t know until he told me that Via suffered from a disease called “diabetic retinopathy.”

26 | EYES DON'T LIE

EYES DON'T LIE | 26

I didn’t know how and when she got that disease, but looking into her eyes, I felt terrible for cursing and hating the one I loved. I’m so embarrassed that I don’t want to disturb her life anymore. I kept my face straight, went speechless, and just went home. I understand why she kept that in me because she knew it would cause me pain. But the other side of me feels betrayed. In the end, I just remembered and did what she always said as I looked into her eyes. I see no pain but relief and acceptance. She was always right. Eyes don’t lie.

Likewise, I’ve been too excited to go home since my dad promised me that once I get home, a dog will be greeting me. On our ride home, I cannot contain my excitement. What piqued my interest, even more, was the fact that my brother had just sent me a picture of the dog. The dog was nothing like those adorable small puppies I've always admired. It scared me, but that didn't stop my eagerness to get home and meet that little angel. “Will tito come and fetch you, Ja?” One of my friends asked. I nodded in response. My father arrived a few minutes later, beaming brightly. I was already aware of what he meant. He is actually very proud and confident that he kept his promise, for which I will be eternally grateful. "Are you ready to meet your new friend?" " My father inquired, delighted. I immediately went inside the car, hoping for a quick ride home. I was overjoyed. 31 | ELLIE

“Super ready!” The trip back home took much longer than expected, but it had no effect on the excitement I was feeling. Finally! A dream come true! I jumped out of the car as soon as it stopped in front of our house. And, to my surprise, there was a cute not-so-little puppy waiting for me. It wags its tail like there's no tomorrow! I nearly screamed when it suddenly laid down and asked for belly rubs! I'm completely overcome with joy! Her brown thin fur was smooth and shiny, but it was her green eyes that drew my attention. I fell in love with this puppy right away and I named her Ellie which means “light”. Ellie has been my greatest source of happiness and comfort for months. When I feel like giving up, Ellie will always cuddle with me and will never leave my side until I feel better. It was moments like these that made me realize how dogs are furry angels. It also taught me that each of them is precious and unique in their own way. I celebrated my sixteenth birthday with her. I can still recall how she stumbled upon seeing a cake. She was too excited to have a taste, but because the cake is chocolate in flavor, we didn't give her any. We also spent Christmas with her. Last but not least, she celebrated the New Year with us, and I can honestly say that I was genuinely happy at the time.

32 | ELLIE

ELLIE | 32

However, Ellie's health began to deteriorate only three days after the New Year of 2019. It was unprecedented, to the point where I was unsure how I should care for her. Every other day, I saw how she tried to appear cheerful and playful, but it was clear that something was wrong. My little angel was battling her illness. For that, I admire her for being so strong. On January 4, 2019, we brought her to a veterinary clinic. It’s evident that she became a lot weaker than before. Seeing her in that state made me so emotional. My mind has been clouded with thousands of whys and hows. Ellie was given vitamins, and the doctor warned me to brace myself for what was to come. I knew exactly what she meant, and it broke my heart to pieces. Ellie had been staring at me the entire time, her green eyes begging me to take her home. My baby’s still scared of veterinarian appointments, huh? Ellie gave me a hug when we got home. She licked my cheek as well. She appears to be thanking me for looking after her. I smiled at her and gently patted her on the head. “You’ll get better soon, Ellie,” I mumbled with tears in my eyes. That same day, I suffered one of my deepest heartbreaks. I have no words to describe the agony in my heart. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I gazed longingly at her sleeping face.

33 | ELLIE

ELLIE | 33

My Ellie is now sound asleep. Her face bears no signs of pain or suffering. She appears to be at ease. Although she is no longer with us, our memories will live on in my heart forever. She taught me a lot of things, and I will be eternally grateful to her. She became one of my closest companions, my best friend, and a member of our family. I wished for Ellie to enter my life, and I am glad she did. Perhaps this is how the cycle of life works. We may be given the things we most desire, but we never know when they will be taken away from us. The very least we can do is cherish every moment with all of the relationships we build every day. Ellie, I'm sure God is lavishing you with treats right now. Remember that you will always have a special place in my heart. Run free in heaven, my love. -Janine

All Too Well Marielle A. Coronel

They dated in college, Mia and Clair. Most of their best memories are spent with each other in those years. Having a great time, making music together, enjoying life, and mindlessly dreaming for it to last forever. As cliché as it sounds, the couple actually did enjoy dancing in the dead of night; while everyone else was fast asleep. "I want to stay like this forever with you," Mia whispered as she rested her head on Clair's shoulder. Their hearts beat against one another. Losing themselves in each other's trance, they dance together with the sound. Clair caressed Mia's face, running fingers along the contours of hers. Trying to remember everything. It was a pleasant recollection right before everything went downhill. Until the two eventually split up. Clearly, their pride got into them, and no one dared to reach out. They believed it was the end they were fated with.

39 | ALL TOO WELL

ALL TOO WELL | 39

Mia wouldn't like Clair to know about this, but she almost didn't graduate in time. She spent her time crying while studying; she did not have a life. She lost her life. She failed every class and avoided her friends because she didn't want to be asked about the whens and the whys. Clair wouldn't like Mia to know about this, but she almost reached out to her. But who was she to put back all her broken pieces? Clair was afraid. Too afraid of the confrontation that he avoided it. Unconsciously pushing Mia away. And this is where their story ends. It did not have a loser or a winner. Only two lovers who were cursed to remember everything all too well.

Misery: Breaking Point

Mother O’ Mother Fryan Auric L. Valdez

Mother, o' mother, apprise me, how art thou? I missed your bright smile and lively vigor. Mother, o' mother, I wish you were still around. I promise this time I'll do the chores much quicker.

I came back alive from the war through sheer luck somehow. The amulet you bestowed me had guarded me. Go figure. Though the trauma I witnessed, I dream of them every day now. My dead comrades, the mere thought of them make me quiver.

I missed our home, so I visited our decimated town. In our withered house filled with endless litter, One torn and crumpled picture of you and me is all I have found. I sat on the creaky staircase to write this final letter.

Mother, o' mother, I can't bear being alone any longer now. I weep and lament in silence till both my eyes shine like glitter. Mother, o' mother, I'm coming to you now. One in the chamber, one press of the trigger.

Epiphany

Janine B. Lansangan With the autumn comes the glimmer on your face I’m always anxious. Will you leave me today? Every minute I’m scared. What if that’s the case? You’ll never know how much I want you to stay.

I would always prefer awkward silence with you Rather than talk with someone new How come you don’t have a clue? When will my feelings ever get through?

I’m lost and don’t want to be found Questions were drowning me out Now I found myself lying on the ground Suffering in the uncertainty of doubts

Will you leave me before the dark night engulfs me? Is it possible for one’s heart to be shattered into pieces? Do you still love me? Should I still bear the pain that only increases?

Here I am, standing in a moment of epiphany Moving forward without the memories of you and me No matter how hard it’s going to be I will need to face the harsh reality

Haunted

Cheneill Carlisle R. Saltoc It’s a Friday night, and the thoughts of you are still haunting me. Do you still remember how I made you watch all the movies I have watched so you could stay longer beside me? Do you still remember when my grandparents’ house was just finished renovating, and we didn’t have extra manly hands around, and you volunteered to help? Even though I told you not to, you still insisted because, “Okay lang na mapagod, kasama naman kita, ikaw pahinga ko diba?” Do you remember our nights together when we did nothing and just stared at each other? We love the sea because of its depth, but why do I like your eyes more if it’s the deepness we’re talking about? Do you still remember our comfortable silence? It’s like our heartbeats are in sync and communicating. Do you still remember how I whispered ‘I love you’ in person because I have never ever confessed my feelings to anyone, especially, love.

Do you still remember that day I just got home from school? We were texting each other on my way home, and I was ranting nonstop about how exhausted I was, and 30 minutes later, I heard your car outside. When I came out to really check if it was you, you lowered your window, “Sabi mo pagod ka, labas tayo. Pahangin gano’n.” That is when I realized that no road trip can beat the smile you gave me. Do you still remember how we used to go for random spontaneous drives? We used to walk by the beach in the middle of the night, listening to the waves crashing and me falling over and over again. Do you still remember how you used to sing me to sleep? I always had a hard time sleeping after we broke up. Do you still remember you used to teach me how to drive? We even made plans to get our licenses together, but I guess plans never really work, right? I hope wherever you are, you are happy without me. I always kept telling you that you deserve all the happiness and good things in life. And I always keep telling you that if somehow fate will meet us, maybe that is ‘it’. Waiting for fate to do its thing. *fingers crossed*

Smile

Fryan Auric L. Valdez Bloodshot eyes brimming with hatred when I'm in sight. Sounds of ridicule and contempt can be heard from left to right. A classmate shoved me down with all their might. Smile. Smile. Smile with a fading facade of delight.

As the bell rang, I stood up shakingly and headed home with fright. When I arrived home, my parents bore no attention to me, not even a slight. Nor a greeting or a question if their child is alright. I headed towards my room, granted I hadn't yet had a bite.

I dropped my shabby bag and removed my grimy clothes, for they were too tight. I closed the filthy curtains, for the setting sun was too bright. As I laid down slowly on my wobbling and cramped bed without a good night, For I shall wake up tomorrow and repeat this day as if it was trite.

Gazed upon the ceiling and wondered upon a question all night. When did this perpetual cycle of nightmares begin to happen downright? I shedded tears and whimpered till I wished I had a blind sight. No. Just smile. Smile. Smile. When I wake up tomorrow, everything will be alright.

Lost Eyes

Marielle A. Coronel Every day, I wander with these lost eyes. Everyone is searching for a place to go. And when my wandering eyes met yours, Only then was I finally found. In your eyes, I found a home, Somewhere, I can be myself and be loved. I never want to lose it, my home. But that day came, and I was lost once again. Lost eyes, once found. And now lost once again. Where do these lost eyes go, When they miss their home? Oh, lovely eyes, where do I find them? If I changed mine, would you look at me again? For so long, you've had your eyes on me. Never thought you'd get tired of looking at me. Suddenly those lovely eyes, Wandered at everything but me. And those eyes look one of joy, Even without looking at me.

Crestfallen

Marielle A. Coronel “Sometimes you just don’t know the answer ’til someone’s on their knees and asks you.” - Champagne Problems, Taylor Swift. The thing about love is that it’s a double-edged sword. It can be a happily ever after story or an anti-hero origin. It can be full of sunshine, but sometimes it’s like midnight rain. It may sometimes be liberating, and then the next minute, it’s suffocating. When love’s not handled correctly, it will feel like a chain in your neck, slowly tightening until you meet your dreadful end. It feels just like it for Allaine and Ethan. Though, their relationship did not start that way. They started beautifully, with affection and bliss. But it didn’t last; it has come to an end. At least for Allaine. But there still remains the respect she had for Ethan. She hasn’t told him that she’s falling out of love. There is still this little hope she got for her feelings to spark again when she heard several stories from her friends about how people in a relationship get cold feet but still end up marrying each other.

47 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 47

Allaine looked beside Ethan, who was driving. The entire trip to Ethan’s residence had been really quiet. Ethan’s family had been asking the couple incessantly about when they would seal the deal, which would only lead to a long discussion. Allaine is already anticipating the never-ending question, but the truth is that she has no idea what she would say if Ethan got on his knees. The love is still there, but marriage is a different story. Though, the couple did agree to do their best throughout their stay. After all, they don’t want to imply that they aren’t happy in their relationship because they are; it’s just that there are some problems that they need to work out. “Welcome home, love birds!” The two were welcomed after a long drive. Ethan’s family and his friends are here. Allaine was left to greet them while Ethan took care of their stuff. “Goodness, Allaine! You’re still as beautiful as ever. My son is very lucky to have you.” She responded to the statement with an awkward laugh. She grabbed a glass of champagne while her eyes traveled around the house. Just in time, Ethan wrapped her in an embrace. “Dance with me?” Before she could voice out a no, Allaine had already found herself in the center with a glass of champagne. Considering the clothes she was wearing, she dropped her hand and walked towards the table, leaving Ethan alone. “What was that?” Ethan said quietly, not bothering to disguise the pain in his eyes since he didn’t want to start a fight. He hugged his girlfriend, “Are we all right, love?” With a sigh of defeat, Allaine returned the hug and nodded in agreement. “We’re okay. Everything’s fine.” That was a lie. 48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

Even though the night was still young, Allaine began to feel dizzy from drinking too many champagne flutes. Suddenly, the lights dimmed, and the music softened. Allaine was watching it happen while feeling uneasy. The spotlight fell on Ethan in the middle of the party, expectant eyes watching his every move. He slowly closed the distance between them and Allaine, phishing for the engagement box in his pocket. “Allaine, my love, I spend my days loving you and only you, and I would do everything to spend it forever with you.” Ethan got on his knee. “Will you marry me?” Everyone in the room was screaming and shouting, ‘Say yes,’ but that’s not what was on Allaine’s mind. It felt like cold water was dumped on her. She no longer feels dizzy. The following hush was deafening. It took a few seconds for the words to sink in with Allaine. She had not expected things to turn out this way, so she quietly urged Ethan to stand up. But the latter didn’t bother and stayed on his knees, begging, hoping, waiting for an answer. The voices in the crowd began to get heavier, and her only thought was to leave. She ran, not once looking back. Turns out, Allaine wasn’t ready for marriage. She can’t imagine herself yet being married to Ethan. She also felt that what Ethan did was unfair; she wasn’t expecting a public proposal. Allaine disliked being thrown in the limelight. People may remember her as the person who crushed Ethan’s heart, but she’s okay with it. At least she didn’t rush into marriage just because she was frightened to speak up. She only wishes that Ethan finds a partner who does not leave him on the dance floor nor someone who will remain silent when asked about marriage.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

Five years later, in her room, Allaine’s on her phone while she reads the message she received from someone. An invitation to Ethan’s wedding. A bitter smile spread on her lips. “Cheers to the love you deserve, Ethan,” she whispered. Pouring herself a glass of champagne.

With A Crescent Above Us Janine B. Lansangan

“Mom, I want to give him my heart.” Says the ever-jovial Aerie to her mother, pointing to the guy her age. Her smile widened as she noticed how grumpy the guy appeared; she almost assumed he had severe anger issues. But, despite this, she still admires him. She couldn’t take her eyes off the guy. She only knows about him because they have a mutual acquaintance. The young lady is brave enough to go to any length to get his attention. She wants to get to know him better. She wants to see how deserving of her heart he is. Aerie approached the guy after noticing him walking alone down the hallway one gloomy day. Aerie seizes the opportunity to finally speak with him. She doesn’t show any signs of embarrassment or nervousness. “Hi, I’m Brigid Aerie! Wanna be friends? You’re Theo, right? Short for Theodore?” “Does it ever occur to you that you’re such a pain in the neck? Keep your childish games to yourself. Go get lost.” He replied.

47 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 47

“How many times do I have to shoo you away?” He’s tough to please, huh? Aerie thought to herself. Aerie found Theodore once more, just as she had done previously. The only difference is that he is at the park with a small child this time. Everything seemed to become more colourful and bright. Theodore is beaming. He’s giggling. He was smiling brightly as he stared at the amusing little boy. In an instant, Aerie’s heart melted. “You own my heart, alright?” She whispered. Aerie is simply watching the touching scene from a distance. She is concerned that his mood will shift abruptly once he becomes aware of her presence. When he heard Theodore call her name, she was about to walk away. She couldn’t believe her ears. She almost thought she was in a dream. “Aerie,” He addressed her differently than before. It was soft and soothing. Aerie couldn’t help but move her body towards him. She slowly walks towards him. Her face was filled with a wide smile. Her heart is overflowing with happiness. “Have you been watching all along?” Theodore inquired. Aerie responded with a nod. She doesn’t want to say anything. She kept all the words unsaid for fear of ruining the moment.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

“Do I scare you already? I’m sorry. I am terrible at handling my emotions. Pardon me for acting the way I did during our previous meetings.” Theodore spoke slowly. The young man is wary of the words he is currently uttering. “No. I’ll never be scared of you. I admire you regardless of how grumpy you are. Just as I admire the crescent moon above us right now.” Aerie responded, fully aware of how illogical it was to compare her admiration for Theo to her admiration for the crescent moon. A crescent moon shone brightly in the middle of the dark night sky. There were no words spoken. The two were simply content to stare at the sky. Aerie couldn’t help but smile bitterly, the moment meant so much to her, but she was aware of how time was limited for her. “You have truly won my heart, Theodore,” Aerie said quietly. “Look, Theo, I’m going to make you a promise with a crescent above us. I don’t care how strange this sounds to you, but my heart will be yours forever, and that is a promise I do not ought to break.” Aerie spoke after gathering all the courage she needed. The cold wind grazes her skin, but she doesn’t mind. Theo is standing in front of her, talking to her. Everything is perfect. “Then, I’d be holding onto that promise,” Theodore responded while gazing lovingly at the young lady.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

Little did they know that would be their last conversation. After a few weeks, Theodore never heard from Aerie again. He attempted to pay her a visit but was denied for unknown reasons. His worry grew as he remained in the dark about what was happening. Theodore doesn’t want to dwell on the negative, so he decides to focus on taking care of himself so that when he and Aerie cross paths again, he can express his true feelings that were left unsaid. “Today’s a big day for you, young lad. We’ll see you again in a few hours. You got this!” As Theodore was being transferred to the operating room, his father said. Theodore took a deep breath, hoping this transplant would be successful so he could visit his “Luna,” Aerie. The transplant went well. Theodore was eventually released from the hospital. However, there are no signs of Aerie. Months passed, and he tried to revisit her, only to be told that Aerie had been discharged from the hospital for quite some time. He was given Aerie’s address right then, and his world crumbled as he discovered the harsh reality behind Aerie’s everyday smile. Aerie had been suffering from bacterial meningitis, which significantly impacted her brain. Aerie’s seizures worsened a week after their first and last conversation, to the point where she was declared brain dead. Theodore discovered how Aerie dedicated her heart to him. She informed her parents about her desire to donate her heart to the person she believes deserves it.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

Aerie was fully aware of Theodore’s condition, but despite her initial intention of assisting him in living longer, she developed more than a benevolent feeling. She felt love. Theodore’s heart was consumed by regrets and pain. He was sorry for being mean to her, ignoring her, and hurting her, even though all she wanted to do was help him. The young lad then returned to where a crescent once again appeared. He raised his hand to his chest, feeling every heartbeat as he gazed up at the sky. He could feel Aerie’s heartbeat inside of him. Tears welled up in his eyes as the agony and pain worsened, and memories of her radiant face and warm presence flashed through his mind. “With a crescent above us, you promised to give me your heart forever. But how could I go on without you? Every heartbeat reminds me of you; your heart is so close, but I want all of you with me. So, Aerie, how? How can I continue to live when every crescent moon reminds me of you and the promise you once made?”

Sad to Remember John Lloyd C. Lasay

I’m with her, but not She’s here but quite far The body is here; the mind is not Holding her near, losing her, is my fear

A chance to save us The loneliness I want to pass As I reminisce about the past There I could see we really weren’t going to last

Where did we go wrong? The question I always ask The happiness is gone All left is sadness, and I’m so done

We hope to last together But now it’s only I and not we forever It would’ve been better If we did try harder

“Where is he? I’ve missed him so much,” Ricky asked himself. Five years before he became a super-rich man in the city, Ricky was a very gifted person. He is good in every subject that they have. Ricky always participates in every competition that their campus has. Also, he is one of the role models of their campus because he is an honor student. Ricky was a second-year college student, and he was taking AB Political Science. One day, while walking on the street, the sun is very direct, and its heat is very painful to the skin. He received a message from his brother. His mother was dead because of leukemia. When he read that message, his world seemed to disappear. He ran to his home immediately and saw his mother lying in the coffin. Ricky decided to stop in his college and work for his two youngest brothers. His friend, Manuel, came to him to sympathize with the death of his mother. “Manuel, I don’t know what to do. I will stop college to help my family,” Ricky said.

“No, you should not stop your college. Don’t worry, remember I’m your best friend, and we were like one family. I will help you and your family. Ricky, please pursue your dream. Make me proud.” Manuel replied. “No! It is too much. You helped me when my Mom got into the hospital, and your father helped me enter college. If you help me, I can’t accept it because it is too much.” Ricky said. “No! Accept whatever you want or you don’t want. You will continue your study until you become one of the most successful people in this city!” Manuel said Manuel encourages Ricky to continue his studies because he wants to see Ricky succeed. So, Ricky accepts the help that Manuel wants for him. Ricky continued college, and Manuel was so proud of Ricky’s achievements in his life. One day, both of them were biking on a bumpy road. They were laughing at each other. They rest on a mountain where they can view the city and sit on the grass. They feel the warmth and pleasant wind beating their body. Manuel asks him about his study, and o course, Ricky told all his achievements. After a few minutes, Manuel said, “I will go to New York City,” with a low voice. Ricky is shocked and asks Manuel why he will go to New York City and for what reasons. Manuel didn’t say anything about why he would leave. “How many days you and your family will stay there?” Ricky begged. Manuel replied that he didn’t know how many days, months, or years. Ricky cried and hugged Manuel tight. 33 | YOU ARE MY LIGHT

YOU ARE MY LIGHT | 33

“I will miss you so much, and Thank you for everything, and Keep Safe. Please don’t forget me. You can call me whenever you miss me, ha?!” Both of them started to cry. It is the day when Manuel will leave. So, Ricky was too fast to go to Manuel’s house, but he was too late because Manuel was already at the airport. So, Ricky texted Manuel and said, “Manuel, remember I will be your light that will make your way and day. So, if you are happy or lonely, please message me so that I know you are okay.” After how many years, Ricky is now a professor at his former school, and he graduated as an AB Political Scientist. Also, he has a business and is now running for mayor of their city. Ricky has achieved a lot since Ricky graduated from college. Because the offers to him are one after another, and he has also helped many poor. One day, when Ricky has a motorcade for his campaign, he sees where they hang out. He remembers that Ricky has no news about him after Manuel goes to New York City. Even to Manuel’s family, Ricky has no idea what’s happening to them. Then One night, he plans to ride a bike and go there. He sat on the grass, the strong wind beating his body. The city is like a Christmas bulb because it is full of lights. The night sky was too beautiful. He closes his eyes and asks himself, “Where is he? I’ve missed him so much.”

33 | YOU ARE MY LIGHT

YOU ARE MY LIGHT | 33

He felt a strong wind as if someone was beside him. So he quickly opened his eyes, and then he saw Manuel. He was very shocked about what he saw, so Ricky hugged him tight as he could. “Where did you come? I’ve been waiting for you so long, and it’s been a long time since we met” Manuel didn’t reply to Ricky’s question. So, Ricky tells him some memories that make them so memorable. Ricky said that when they were in high school. Manuel falls in love with someone, and he needs help from Ricky. Deep inside, Ricky was jealous because Manuel was his only best friend. Also, he doesn’t want Manuel to leave him alone. After Ricky said that, Manuel touched his back and said, “Sorry.” That’s what only Manuel said to him. So, Ricky said, “Oh! I’m sorry I didn’t tell you because I don’t want you to think of me. I only want to make you happy, so I kept it a secret.” Again, Manuel does not react to it. So, Ricky continues to tell every memory they have had since the meeting. Until Ricky stops talking and says something that makes him too nervous. “Hey! I have something to tell you. It is important because it makes me too comfortable if I will say this to you,” Ricky said. Ricky was too nervous, and he didn’t know what to do. He looks into Manuel’s eyes and lips. “I have feelings for you. I like you, Manuel!” Ricky said.

33 | YOU ARE MY LIGHT

YOU ARE MY LIGHT | 33

When Ricky expressed his feelings for Manuel, he did not know what to do. He became puzzled with mixed excitement. Ricky suddenly stood up, and he said everything he liked to Manuel. “I like you not only because you are handsome but also because you are very polite and pious. I admire you because you always understand my situation and don’t underestimate my strength. Remember, I am the one that is forever there for you if you want to go to church. Also, I’ve always cheered on you if you are playing basketball. I am your number one fan. I know it is not what you want because you will not like it. It’s okay, I’m fine.” Ricky proudly explained to Manuel. But Manuel does not react to it. Until Manuel asks him, “What if I’m gone? What will you do?” Ricky stood and shouted at him that he would not go because he was there for him, and he was the light that made his way and day, forever. He shouted at Manuel as he could because he believed that Manuel would not leave. Also, he tells many reasons that convince Manuel that his life has a purpose in this world. Until Ricky went to the end of the cliff, and he heard someone shouting at him. He looked for it, and he saw his sister of Manuel. “What are you doing? We have been looking at you for a long time. Who are you talking with?” Manuel’s sister said. “Oh! You’re here. I’m talking to Manuel. Wait! Where is Manuel?!” Ricky asks. 33 | YOU ARE MY LIGHT

YOU ARE MY LIGHT | 33

“What looking for, Manuel? He is dead, Ricky. Manuel is dead!” Manuel’s sister said. When Ricky heard this, his world seemed to collapse, just like when his mother died. Ricky was lonely, and he could not accept it. Ricky quickly ran to Manuel’s home. He saw the big tarpaulin, where a picture of Manuel reached for his smile. He also hurried to its coffin and wept bitterly. After a few hours, Manuel’s sister gives him the box that Manuel wants to impart to Ricky. The Sister of Manuel said that he died because of leukemia. That is the reason why they go to New York City. Ricky was shocked to find out, so he regretted not stopping or asking Manuel why and what was happening to him. So when he opened the inside of the box. He saw the little necklace he gave Manuel, and a piece of paper read, “You are my light that will make my way and day.” Tears rose in her eyes, and she could not help but kneel in front of Manuel’s coffin. He apologized and apologized for everything he had done in Ricky’s life. It is hard to forget people who pleased us, but when this person is gone and leaves us, it will shock our lives. It feels as if we have lost the desire to live. Even though we have many mistakes and shortcomings in them, we can do nothing but treasure the memories we have made through hardship and comfort. Ricky said, “So to my Manuel, that always there for me. I know you’re gone, but my love for you will never be gone. I’m your only best friend, and you are my best friend. Whatever happens, our friendship will always be together and forever. I love you, and goodbye.” 33 | YOU ARE MY LIGHT

Walking with sand beneath our feet I held your hand, surprised by how it perfectly fits Together, side by side, we sit As the color of the sky slowly shifts

As the sunset starts painting the skies I hope to witness your smile Because even in the dark, you shine the most in my eyes Despite you standing a mile

Again, you are colored with orange I smiled bitterly, I want to be with you more Like the sun sets and rises for change I stared at your face, and it shook my heart to the core

We talked for an hour I looked at my watch, I’m surprised Suddenly wishing for a downpour Oh, how time flies so fast

With our every hello comes goodbye Go ahead, I’ll let you go with a smile Tomorrow again, the sun will shine Guess we’ll see each other again in a while

Mary Ann Dela Peña They called it sky in the morning light And darkness when the sun hides I am a star who lost its shine I am lonely, no one is on my side

Sometimes I think this is not for me To be in the sky with shining stars They shine so bright that it can hurt my eyes And the feelings I tried to hide

I am a lost star in a body of a child Imprisoned in the darkness of night Will there be someone to recognized my dying utopia And save me in the loneliness of night?

The Sunset is Beautiful, Isn’t It? Marielle A. Coronel

The plane touched the ground, and the sun was already setting in the city. Nothing had changed. The views were still spectacular no matter what angle I looked from. Everything was still just as beautiful as ever. And this place triggered a million different thoughts in my head. I remained silent as I continued to walk straight to my destination. I walked and walked and walked along the path where the trees danced slowly as I felt the warm breeze and the autumn leaves fall, meeting with the ground. “Do you miss him?” A voice whispered in my ear, a thought rattling in my caged mind. I shook my head and heaved a sigh, trying to focus on the street. “Don’t get lost.” I blinked a few times. It’s me and the yearning voice in my head. I sighed. And then another, and one more, hoping to silence the thoughts in my head. I continued walking until I saw the familiar place along the long road stretch. My legs followed the path as if beguile until I was almost near it. And there, I saw it. Not just the sun’s rays scattered as it dawned from far away. But also the smile I once loved, the smile I once vowed to protect. I couldn’t look at you straight in the eyes, and I’m pretty sure you knew because you went ahead and spoke. “You came.” 31 | THE SUNSET IS BEAUTIFUL, ISN’T IT?

THE SUNSET IS BEAUTIFUL, ISN’T IT? | 31

I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I did.” Silence enveloped us again, but I tried to mutter another thought. “I miss you, love.” “I miss everything about you. I miss the late-night calls, the I love you’s, the non-stop flirting, the laughter we had together, the good morning texts, and everything that is you.” I went on and on while you were listening. It felt good. I felt free as the words tumbled out of my mouth casually, and I knew you were listening because I could hear your laughter. I remember it being my favorite sound that I never got tired of hearing daily. I let out a small smile; I probably look stupid right now. “I hate you too. You let me feel what real love feels, yet you left me hanging. How am I supposed to want it again when the only person I wanted to share that feeling with is gone now?” The tears obscured my vision until they became thick, spilling down my cheeks unwittingly. The words constricting my lungs strained to escape my chest as I poured my heart out. I looked at you, but you weren’t there. I looked around and called your name, but you were gone. You left. I stood up from where I was kneeling and wiped the tears from my cheeks. I walked along the same path, never once looking back. “Happy Death Anniversary, Mahal.” I whispered this time, staring in the sky.

Home. A word that’s supposed to elicit a feeling. The simplest hints of its walls or roof from a mile away would kindle the faintest of smiles or a single breath of relief. It’s familiar. It always has been, but you never tire of it as not a single corner of your house remains untouched from memories of old. He has this. A home. It used to be a bright and happy home that gave comfort and people to interact with. But for his parents, it’s nothing but a room with walls, empty shadows and painted pictures of smiles he’s never seen them wear. Toys were never once held by his parents.

47 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 47

Books and stories never hushed him goodnight. Color filled his home. But why was it so colorless? One day, a boy named Kyler decided to find a new home from other people. He bravely goes outside to make some friends. Finally, he found a new home where his new 3 friends would always play. Forgetting that he’s still tied from his old home. “Get back here!” Kyler’s dad shouted. He then got grounded for playing too much with his new friends. It happens more often to the point that he decides not to go out anymore. None of his 3 friends came looking for him, perhaps they had forgotten about him already, or they just didn’t want him anymore. His emotion and self-worth were destroyed that day, and he realized he was not good enough for others. As time passed, his mother noticed that her son barely ate anything and tended to avoid people. This worried the mother, so she decided to talk to her son. “Why don’t you go out anymore?”, The boy’s mother asked.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

“I don’t have any reason to go out anymore”, Kyler replied. He then directly went back to his room. His mother doesn’t know what to do, so she just moves on from it. After all, he is not her only child to take care of. He grew up in isolation, having little to no experience in socializing. Now that he’s at the high school, he’s having a hard time with school activities because most of it is groupings. His classmates would think he’s just a shy person, not knowing that he doesn’t know how to interact and socialize like the others. Someone was brave enough to interact with him. His name was Dylan. Kyler was often attached to the word “shy” or “introverted”, but that didn’t stop him from interacting with him. This may be the first time Dylan met an introvert, someone who prefers to listen and observe rather than talk. It took quite a while for Kyler to let his guard down and let new people enter his life again. After befriending Kyler, Dylan introduced him to his group of friends. They’re all shy to interact with him at first, but as they learn more about him, they start to understand and get comfortable with him. They all became good friends who would always hang out together.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

Dylan noticed that Kyler would always be at the back whenever they walked in groups. So Dylan said to him, “Why are you always at the back? Come here.” “It’s alright. I feel more comfortable walking behind you guys.” Kyler said. “Thanks, though,” Kyler added while smiling. “Alright then. Just come over here beside me if you want, okay?” Dylan said. Dylan and his friends were kind, considerate and attentive to him. Unlike his home. At last, Kyler found a new home. Being friends with Dylan and his friends was the best thing that happened to him this high school. Graduation day is almost here. They would talk about what strand they will take for senior high school. Dylan is interested in becoming an engineer, so he will take STEM. Kyler also takes STEM because he wants to be a doctor someday. They’re planning to have a party after graduation. Kyler is willing to join them, but something happened after graduation.

48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

A family problem occurred. He was forced to leave with them. He didn’t even have the chance to say goodbye to his friends. They move to a different city. New life, new people, and a new house. Kyler had a hard time adjusting to everything, but he had no choice but to keep moving forward. He can’t complain to his parents because they provide him food, clothes, and shelter. It seems like his parents disregard their children’s mental health. Maybe that’s the reason why Kyler’s siblings are not doing well. His big brother had a son at a young age and got kicked out of the house, and then his minor sister had a mental illness from all the stress. Leaving him as the only “normal” child in his parent’s eyes, with a chance to have a great future because he excelled pretty well in school. Not knowing that moving to a new place would harm him. The thought of having such heavy expectations from his parents burdened him. Kyler decided not to get attached to anyone anymore. The trauma of detachment from his old friends left a massive scar on him. His school performance keeps on deteriorating. The mother noticed the decline in her son’s grades, so she confronted him. “Are you doing your homework?” the mother asked. 48 | HAUNTED

HAUNTED | 48

“I can’t do my homework anymore”, Kyler replied. “Why?” the mother asked. “I don’t know”, Kyler replied while looking down. As expected, his mother disregarded the matter again to take care of his sister, who is mentally ill. Kyler would sit beside his bed, talking to himself. Asking if he will ever have someone on his side again. His parents used to be by his side before, but he understands that his parents got busier as time passed. He wants to make friends, but at the same time, he fears that he might lose them again. Am I going to be alone forever? Maybe I’m not good enough to make people stay. I know people come and go, but I hope they stay until the next one arrives. I just want to be loved and feel like I belong. Those are all the things he said to himself, feeling lonely while surrounded by the family that used to make him feel at home. Home is a feeling, but his parents can only see the physical world. Like the lesson, he learned from the story of the Little Prince, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” 48 | HAUNTED

Proud

Janine Lansangan "You should’ve done better." Hearing these words for the hundredth time made me want to close my eyes and disappear. It puts me under a lot of pressure and guilt because I know I can't improve myself any further than I am right now. The desire to do better than before is becoming hazy; it is exhausting, and I just want to live without having to meet the expectations of others. "I could’ve done better," I whispered to myself. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. This should be no problem for me. After all, there's only one person to blame, and that person is me. Our professor surprised us with a quiz one sunny afternoon. Fear was present, but the desire to do better was much stronger. We were given an hour to respond to thirty questions, which caught me off guard. "Will an hour be enough?" In my head, I almost cursed. Knowing myself, answering one question will take at least five minutes. So the chances of finishing the quiz in time were slim, which heightened my fear.

An hour flew by in the blink of an eye. I finished the quiz, but doubts began to form in my mind. I wasn't surprised by the outcome; in fact, I expected it. But I'll never be able to shake the feeling of disappointment. Again, “I could’ve done better.” It was difficult to pretend that I was fine, but I made it through the afternoon. I couldn't tell anyone in the house about the unexpected quiz that had been given earlier that day. I'm afraid and tired of hearing their gripes and disappointments. I should probably keep this to myself. However, my brother, among everyone else in the house, notices even the smallest change in my behavior. I was about to walk into my room when he asked me something. “Anything happened at school? Are you alright?” I was unable to respond. My tears began to pool in my eyes quietly. It has been extremely heavy. His questions made me realize that I am not alone, that someone is interested in knowing and listening about how my day went, what was going on, and, most importantly, that someone cares about me. "Nothing. Just failed a quiz earlier." I answered between sobs. I tried to hold back my tears, but they wouldn’t stop falling. I heard him chuckle, and he then gave me a pat on my head..

"You're used to getting high marks. It's okay to fail occasionally. One cannot always be at the top. There will always be times when you fail, but you must never give up. Cry now and then compose yourself. Take a break, and then get back up." He calmly said. I'm not sure how many times I nodded. It was actually surprising, how much comfort his words provided. It lifts the burden that my heart has been carrying all along. "I know. I think I’m just being too hard on myself." I responded. It was only then that I realized how much I despised myself for failing to excel in so many areas. My parents put me under too much stress. And I, too, put too much pressure on myself to live up to their expectations. "You should remember that no matter what happens, someone will always be proud of you. And that someone is me, your own brother." Words of assurance that I had longed to hear have finally arrived. I smiled broadly. I felt so relieved as I exhaled deeply. I haven't felt this light or happy in a long time. That day will live with me forever. Because it was on that day that I learned to accept my own flaws, and it serves as a reminder that… At least, someone is proud of me.
