Dear Passengers,

L

a temporada de invierno llega cargada de buenas noticias para todos ustedes, en tanto que arroja cambios en el mapa de rutas que AIR NOSTRUM les ofrece y que, al mismo tiempo, va a incrementar las posibilidades de viaje desde numerosos puntos de la geografía española. De entrada, ponemos en marcha una nueva conexión que va a enlazar con vuelo directo las ciudades de Alicante y Málaga. Los vuelos vienen a incrementar de manera rotunda la conectividad de estas dos capitales, importantes motores económicos del sureste de España. Me gusta contarles estas cosas porque soy consciente de que en numerosos casos la repercusión personal, para muchos de ustedes, es de gran calado. No hace mucho, de hecho, aguardando el embarque en la T-4 del Aeropuerto de Barajas, se dirigió a mí un empresario, propietario de una pyme, que muy cortésmente me agradeció la puesta en marcha de seis rutas que –desde hace ya un año– unen Cantabria con el resto de España. Sus palabras de agradecimiento causaron en mí una honda impresión. Regresé a casa satisfecho, porque recibí la mayor de las recompensas a todos los esfuerzos que, jornada a jornada, realizamos en AIR NOSTRUM por introducir avances en la conectividad transversal de la red nacional del transporte aéreo. Bien es cierto que AIR NOSTRUM es la única compañía que opera en las 17 autonomías y la Ciudad Autónoma de Melilla, y la pionera en establecer vínculos entre numerosas ciudades españolas nunca antes conectadas con un vuelo directo. Desde aquí soy yo quien quiere agradecer a esta persona la confianza que deposita en nosotros, al escogernos para todos sus desplazamientos. Gratitud que extiendo a usted, pasajero, que ahora está leyendo estas líneas. Hay muchas más novedades, aunque mi intención no es la de robarles mucho tiempo con un análisis exhaustivo. Sevilla y Fuerteventura disfrutan desde este mismo mes de noviembre de un enlace aéreo directo, lo que sin duda va a suponer un incremento de visitas turísticas a la isla. A la par, se erige en una vía de conexión sin parangón para el buen número de andaluces que hoy viven y trabajan en Fuerteventura. Añadan a ello los vuelos que permiten viajar desde Melilla a Barcelona y viceversa, o las rutas que unen Valladolid con Málaga, Palma de Mallorca y Sevilla. Hay que anotar también que AIR NOSTRUM ha reforzado con nuevas frecuencias las rutas que conectan Reus con Madrid; Barcelona con Almería; Pamplona con Barcelona; Almería con Madrid; Barcelona con León; Murcia con Barcelona o Zaragoza con Madrid. En estos casos la intención es la de mejorar los horarios para que usted pueda organizar de manera más flexible sus viajes. Espero que todas estas novedades les sean de utilidad. Ahora sólo me resta agradecerles el tiempo que me han brindado y desearles una placentera estancia a bordo.

am pleased to inform you this month that our new Winter Flight Timetable is full of novelties including, amongst other things, a number of new flight routes and a variety of increased flight frequencies. As you will discover for yourself, regional flight travel has never been easier. I am sure you will be happy to hear that we have introduced a new direct flight route between Alicante and Malaga. This new flight service will, without a doubt, increase communications between these bustling Mediterranean cities, considered two of southeast Spain’s most important economic motors. I love being the bearer of good tidings and am personally aware of the repercussion many of our flight policies have on our passengers. In fact, not long ago, I was embarking at the new Barajas T-4 Airport Terminal in Madrid when a passenger, owner of a small company, came up to me and very politely thanked me for the introduction of the flight routes that connect the region of Cantabria with the rest of Spain. I was extremely impressed by his words of gratitude. I went home with a feeling of deep satisfaction, bearer of a wonderful gift, the gift of gratitude for the efforts we make to improve Spain’s most important regional flight network. I feel I am not exaggerating when I say ‘most important’ because the fact is that AIR NOSTRUM is the only regional airline to operate in all of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions and the Autonomous City of Melilla, as well being pioneer in establishing direct flight routes between a large number of Spanish cities. From here, I would like to personally thank the passenger I met for the trust placed in our airline and for using AIR NOSTRUM on a regular basis. Another of our novelties is a new direct flight route between Seville and Fuerteventura. This new service will, I am sure, provide both an important increase in tourists to the Island of Fuerteaventura whilst, at the same time, providing a new via of communication for the numerous Andalusians that live and work on this beautiful island. A new flight service from Melilla to Barcelona and vice versa and flight routes between Valladolid and Malaga and Palma de Mallorca and Seville have also been introduced. We have also reinforced the AIR NOSTRUM flight timetable with new flight frequencies between Reus and Madrid, Barcelona and Almeria, Pamplona and Barcelona, Almeria and Madrid, Barcelona and Leon, Murcia and Barcelona and Zaragoza and Madrid. These new flight frequencies have been introduced to provide passengers with greater flexibility when travelling. I trust you will find the above of interest and, in the meantime, would like to thank you for dedicating your valuable time to reading this editorial. I hope you enjoy your flight. mpezamos por Logroño. Una visita indispensable, para empezar a tomar contacto con el carácter riojano y su gastronomía y vino, es la Calle Laurel. En el corazón del Casco Antiguo, tiene un bar en cada puerta y una especialidad culinaria en cada bar, regadas con buen vino de Rioja. Probad los champiñones, las zapatillas, el tío Agus, los cojonudos, la sepia, las setas con jamón, los matrimonios, los valentinos, los calzoncillos… una delicia (los nombres son cuando menos llamativos). Tras reponer fuerzas, un paseo por el Casco Antiguo. Las noches son una delicia en la Plaza del Parlamento o en la del Mercado, llenas de terrazas y disfrutando de los monumentos iluminados como la Concatedral de la Redonda o el propio Parlamento de La Rioja. It houses an interesting archaeological collection along with a number of educational areas offering information on winemaking. Visitors will also find here a wine tasting area, offering a number of wine tasting events, and an excellent restaurant. The picturesque town of Briones is also home of a number of interesting historical remains such as its ancient walls. Whilst in Briones, we would suggest a visit to a family wine bodega or bodegas situated in surrounding towns such as Haro, Ollauri, San Vicente etc. A number of sporting activities such as horse riding, walking or cycling amongst the vineyards or a trip in a balloon and recreational activities such as wine tasting or a spa wine therapy treatment can also be had here. On the third day of their break, we would suggest visitors visit the Way of St. James Pilgrim Route, crossing the Puente de Piedra (Stone Bridge) into the city, through

Rioja, que entra en Logroño por el Puente de Piedra y atraviesa el Casco Antiguo hasta la Iglesia de Santiago, que tiene a sus pies un curioso juego de la oca gigante con representaciones de todos los hitos principales del Camino. Siguiendo las marcas de las conchas amarillas y las flechas llegaréis a la Plaza del Parlamento, donde se encuentra el Parlamento de La Rioja. Cerca de allí se encuentra la Puerta del Revellín, antigua puerta de la ciudad orientada a Finisterre por la que los peregrinos abandonaban Logroño de camino a Navarrete. Siguiendo la ruta del Camino de Santiago, llegamos a Navarrete. Aunque si se hace en coche, una moderna variante rodea el pueblo, merece la pena entrar a visitarlo. Navarrete es famoso por su alfarería. Resulta curioso visitar alguna de las más artesanas como es la de Antonio Naharro, justo enfrente del antiguo Hospital de Peregrinos San Juan de Acre del que sólo queda la portada que hoy pertenece al cementerio de Navarrete. En la Hípica de Navarrete también tendréis la ocasión de recorrer los viñedos a caballo. Es un paseo para principiantes, pero es divertido y los paisajes son estupendos. Salimos de Navarrete de camino a Nájera, cuna de reyes, ya que aquí tuvo su corte durante muchos años el Reino de PamplonaNájera (918-1076). Sancho III el Mayor construyó el Monasterio de Santa María La Real, donde se encuentra el Panteón real, en base a una leyenda sobre unas visiones que

the Old Town to the Church of Santiago where they will find an unusual giant board game, similar to the game of Snakes and Ladders, that incorporates the main milestones of this famous pilgrim route. A painted line of yellow scallops and arrows will lead visitors to the previously mentioned Plaza del Parlamento and the La Rioja Regional Government Headquarters. Close to here, visitors will find the Puerta del Revellin, ancient city gate facing Land’s End, used by the pilgrims when leaving Logroño to continue their journey to Navarrete. Navarette, home of a modern bypass, is another town worth visiting. Famous for its beautiful pottery, visitors might like to visit the premises of one of its pottery artisans such as the Antonio Naharro Pottery Shop located in front of the ancient entrance to the Hospital of San Juan, all that remains of this ancient pilgrim hospice, and today forming part of the town cemetery. We would mention that the Navarette Riding Club offers horse riding trips through the beautiful local vineyards. From Navarette, we would suggest visitors continue on to Najera, cradle of kings and home of the court of the Kingdom of Pamplona-Najera (918-1076) for many years. Sancho III el Mayor built the Santa Maria La Real Monastery, home of the Royal Mausoleum, here after having a number of legendary visions in the cave situated in the Monastery church.

Desde Nájera, antes de partir por el Camino de Santiago hacia Santo Domingo de la Calzada, merece la pena un pequeño desvío que muchos peregrinos hacen incluso a pie para visitar los Monasterios de Suso y Yuso en San Millán de la Cogolla, Patrimonio de la Humanidad por ser el lugar donde se han encontrado las primeras palabras escritas en castellano. Ya en Santo Domingo de la Calzada, toda la ciudad esta construida por y para el Camino de Santiago, desde el antiguo Hospital de Peregrinos que hoy es Parador Nacional hasta, por supuesto, su magnífica Catedral que posee en su interior la prueba viva de una famosa leyenda medieval en la que cantó una gallina después de asada. Aun podéis oir cantar al gallo y la gallina en la Catedral y podréis conocer al completo la leyenda. Para el último día podéis visitar la zona de Rioja Baja: Calahorra, la capital romana de La Rioja, con su excelente huerta y verdura. Arnedo, capital del calzado y Enciso, donde viven los dinosaurios riojanos. En esta localidad y otras limítrofes se encuentra una de las mayores colecciones del mundo de huellas de dinosaurios. Existe un centro de interpretación que os ayudará a comprender estos vestigios.

Continuing along the St. James Way pilgrim route from Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, we would suggest visitors take some time out to visit the Suso and Yuso monasteries in San Millan de la Cogolla. These famous World Heritage historical monuments are considered to have outstanding associative significance as the birthplace of the modern written and spoken Spanish language. The history of San Millan de la Cogolla is closely linked to the Way of St. James, from its ancient Pilgrim Hospital, present day home of a beautiful Parador Nacional Hotel, to the magnificent cathedral where, according to a medieval legend, a hen crowed after it had been roasted. Visitors will be able to listen to the hen crowing here and the story behind this curious legend. Finally, we would suggest that visitors spend their last day visiting the Rioja Baja area, home of Calahorra, the Roman capital of La Rioja, with its excellent market gardens and produce, Arnedo, capital of shoemaking and Enciso, prehistoric home of dinosaurs and considered, along with other areas, to house one of the world’s large collection of dinosaur footprints. Este templo gótico de tres naves rematadas en capillas absidiales debe su denominación a que fue alzado sobre la base de un espacio palaciego donado por Alfonso VII de Castilla. “La Aguja” o “La Imperial”, como también se conoce a esta iglesia fundada en el siglo XI, reconstruida en el XII y ampliada en el XVI, posee un majestuosa cúpula octogonal, que exteriormente se prolonga en una esbelta torre piramidal gótica, un hermoso claustro y un espléndido retablo mayor de Arnao de Bruselas.

This three nave Gothic style temple with its apsidal chapels owes its name to the fact that it was built on the site of an ancient palace donated by Alfonso VII of Castile. The “Aguja” (Needle) or “Imperial”, as this church is also known, was founded in the 11th century, reconstructed in the 12th century and enlarged in the 16th century. It stands out, amongst other things, for its majestic octagonal dome, elegant Gothic style pyramidal bell tower, magnificent cloister and splendid main altarpiece attributed to Arnao de Bruselas.

Declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1997, este lugar de culto y recogimiento, privilegiado escenario del origen del castellano y de los primeros poemas en nuestra lengua, surgió a raíz de las cuevas habitadas por los eremitas discípulos de San Millán en el siglo VI. Salpicado por un eclecticismo singular en el que se dan cita rasgos arquitectónicos visigóticos, mozárabes o románicos, Suso atesora una extensa recopilación de manuscritos y códices, como el Emilianense de los Concilios, una copia del Apocalipsis, del Beato de Liébana, o la Biblia de Quiso.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1997, this religious building is considered the cradle of Castilian Spanish and home of the first poems written in Spanish. Its origins date back to the caves inhabited by the hermit disciples of St. Millan in the 5th century. This beautiful eclectic building with its Visigoth, Mozarabic and Romanesque style architecture houses an impressive number of manuscripts and codices such as the Emilianense de los Concilios along with copies of the Apocalypsis, the Beato de Liebana and the Bible of Quiso.

Alzada sobre un templo románico del siglo XII, este lugar de culto fue declarado “Insigne” por el Papa Benedicto XIII, según bula del año 1727, ascendiendo en agosto de 1959 al rango de Concatedral. Del espléndido monumento destacar sus impresionantes torres gemelas levantadas en el XVIII por Martín de Berriatúa, su profusamente ornamentada fachada principal, su capilla del Santo Cristo, el bello retablo mayor, del XVII, o la elaborada sillería del coro, formada por 24 asientos altos y 22 bajos.

Built on the site of a Roman temple, this 12th century church was declared “Insigne” by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727 in a Papal Bull. It was given the status of collegiate church in 1959. A monumental building that stands out, amongst other things, for its impressive twin bell towers built by Martín de Berriatúa, its richly ornamented façade, the Santo Cristo Chapel, the beautiful 17th century main altarpiece and the choir comprising 24 upper and 22 lower stalls.

Distribuida en cinco ámbitos, su exhibición permanente muestra los orígenes e historia de la vid y el vino; los distintos procesos y utensilios empleados por el hombre en la vitivinicultura y la impronta de la vid y el vino en la creación artística. Subrayar sus piezas arqueológicas, joyas, pinturas, esculturas españolas, flamencas e italianas, orfebrería, artes decorativas, colecciones de sacacorchos y etnográfica... todas ellas con el vino como denominador común, sin olvidar el Jardín de Baco, una recopilación de más de 200 variedades de vid en un entorno de viñas donde se conservan dos antiguas norias de riego del siglo XIX.

Divided into five different areas, this splendid museum houses a permanent exhibition with regard to the history of wine and the art of winemaking; the different processes and tools used in viniculture and grapes and wine from an artistic point of view. Worth mentioning, amongst other things, are the archaeological, jewellery, painting, Spanish, Flemish and Italian sculpture, silverwork, decorative art, corkscrew and ethnographic collections and, of course, the impressive Jardín de Baco (Baccus Garden) with its collection of over 200 different types of grapevine, endless vineyards and two ancient water-wheels dating back to the 19th century.

How long have you actually been playing handball, and when did you decide to become a professional handball player? I began playing as a hobby at school, the Sagrada Familia Horta de Barcelona Primary School, when I was 8-years-

Desde pequeño siempre me ha gustado el balonmano, tal vez porque mi hermano mayor jugaba a este deporte y por tradición familiar decidí hacer balonmano. Lo que sí que es cierto es que había un entrenador de baloncesto del colegio que me decía que dejara el balonmano, que no llegaría a ser nada y que en el baloncesto sí; menos mal que no le hice caso. ¿Cómo fueron tus inicios en la Selección Española? Debuté en ella con 19 años, en enero del 90 en Cádiz, en el torneo internacional de España contra Polonia, partido que ganamos. Mi primera experiencia fue muy

I decided to continue with this tradition. I would mention, however, that our school basketball trainer tried to convince me to give it up. He said I would never make it in this sport. Thank goodness I didn’t listen to him. How was your debut with the Spanish Handball Selection? I made my debut in January, 1990 in Cadiz when I was 19-years-old playing in the International Tournament against

Sin lugar a dudas un oro olímpico en Pekín sería fantástico, pero todavía queda mucho camino por recorrer y mucho trabajo por hacer. ¿Cómo lleva tu familia el que seas uno de los más grandes del balonmano español? ¿Recibiste su apoyo desde el principio? Muy bien porque para ellos soy David, no un jugador de balonmano; y sí, desde el comienzo me apoyaron y me ayudaron. Mis padres cuando era pequeño me acompañaban a todos los partidos fuera la hora que fuera. Si que es cierto que el primer día que le dije a mi madre que me había puesto de portero me dijo que no, pero no le hice caso y ahora ella está muy contenta de ello. Estás considerado como uno de los mejores guardametas del mundo, además de especialista desde los siete metros. ¿Te supone esto una responsabilidad añadida? No es una responsabilidad es una motivación que hace que me esfuerce cada día un poco más para ir mejorando, porque nuestra ventaja es que diariamente puedes aprender cosas nuevas. ¿Es el binomio Barrufet-balonmano un todo indisoluble? Indudablemente son muchos años y gran parte de mi vida está ligada al balonmano. Cuando me retire me gustaría seguir ligado a este deporte maravilloso pero desde los despachos. Soy Licenciado en Derecho y poder conjuntarlos resultaría maravilloso. ¿Portero es sinónimo de agilidad, presentimiento, valentía, locura...? ¿Qué cualidades debe reunir? Una de las principales es no tener miedo al balón cosa que si te pones en la portería ya se presupone, porque si no te apartas y eso sería muy malo; otras son la elasticidad, que es una parte relevante de nuestro entrenamiento, y mantener la cabeza fría, ya que tienes que tener claro que el gol encajado no es importante, lo importante es el siguiente lanzamiento. ¿Hay que tener algo de adivino para saber por dónde te van a lanzar la pelota o eres un maestro de la intuición? No. Todo es trabajo. Primero colaboración con la defensa, luego muchas horas de estudio viendo vídeos de los rivales y también un poco de suerte, que nunca viene mal. Acabas de cumplir 36 años, ¿está pasando ya por tu cabeza retirarte o todavía tendremos Barrufet para mucho? Lo que está claro es que la retirada está más cerca que antes. Ahora lo que tengo claro es que si todo va bien me gustaría jugar los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín y allí retirarme de la Selección y, según como me encuentre, seguir jugando un año o dos

The World Championship in Tunisia without a doubt, it was a dream come true. After winning, we spent ages just floating on a cloud. Is there anything you haven’t won that you would like to win? I just like to win and hope to carry on, it doesn’t really matter. Obviously, a gold medal in the Peking Olympic Games would be fantastic, although we still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do. How does your family feel about you being one of Spain’s greatest handball players? Have they always supported you? No problem because for them I am just David, not a handball player, and yes, I have had their support from the beginning. When I was young, my parents went everywhere with me. I must admit that my mother did not agree when I told her I was going to be a goalkeeper. I didn’t really take any notice and now she is really glad I didn’t. You are considered to be one of the world’s best goalies and a 7-meter specialist. Do you feel this could add to your responsibility? No, I find it motivating; it helps me strive to improve, it is never too late to learn something new. Is the tandem Barrufet-Handball going to be everlasting? I’ve been playing handball for years and a large part of my life is linked to this sport. When I retire, I would like to continue being involved but from an administrative point of view. I have a degree in law. It would be great to be able to combine the two. Would you say that goalkeeping is synonymous with agility, intuition, courage, madness etc.? What qualities does a goalkeeper need? One of the main things is not to be afraid of the ball. This is obvious. If it were not so, players would spend most of their time trying to steer clear of the ball instead of going for it. Elasticity is also important and a cool head because a goalkeeper has to know that the important thing is to concentrate on where the next throw is coming from rather than dwell on what has already happened. Do you have to have a crystal ball to know where the ball is coming from or is it a question of intuition? No. It is a lot of hard work, a good defence and hours of watching videos. A little bit of luck also helps. You were 36-years-old this year. Is it time to retire or do you plan to continue? Retirement is getting closer. I would like to compete in the Peking Olympic Games before retiring from the Spanish National Handball Team and, depending

Me gustaría dedicarme al Derecho deportivo, así no me desvincularía del deporte, que es lo que más me agrada. ¿Qué consejos darías a quienes quieran iniciarse en este deporte? Que lo practiquen porque es maravilloso; es una modalidad deportiva muy completa además al ser un deporte de equipo sirve, sobre todo para los niños, para aprender a compartir, a marcarte objetivos comunes con más gente, a ser un poco más extrovertido, a no ser egoísta… todo son ventajas. Se nota que es mi deporte y me gusta, ¿no? ¿Cuáles son tus aficiones? Me atrae mucho leer y escuchar música, pero cuando tengo un minuto libre lo que más me gusta es pasarlo con mis hijos y mi mujer y compartir todo mi tiempo con ellos. Por cierto, a los entrañables pitufos se les llama en catalán “barrufets”, y tu posees un físico imponente. ¿Has recibido alguna vez bromas al respecto? ¿Cómo te las tomas? Sobre todo en el colegio sí que me hacían bromas y yo era el primero en reírme porque así nos lo pasábamos todos bien. Vuelas frecuentemente con Iberia Regional-AIR NOSTRUM. ¿Qué aspectos destacarías de la compañía? El trato recibido es exquisito en todos los aspectos, pero una de las cosas que más me gusta es comprobar día a día el afán de mejora de todo el mundo que trabaja en esta compañía. Es un placer volar con vosotros.

It is an excellent sport that promotes, especially amongst children, the idea of teamwork, how to mark common objectives, how to become more outgoing, less selfish etc., it offers all types of advantages. Am I being too obvious that it is my favourite sport and that I love it? Do you have time for hobbies? Yes, I like reading and listening to music although what I really like to do is spend any free time I have with my wife and children. By the way, “Barrufet” is the Catalan word for gnome. Do you get a lot of ribbing about your name? Well, I used to at school, but I am the first to laugh, so we normally end up laughing together. As a frequent flyer with Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM, what do you like best about our airline? The service is exquisite whichever way you look at it, but one of the things I most admire is how hard the staff works to improve the quality of the client service. Fuerte de Rostrogordo

Rostrogordo Fortress

Erigido a finales del siglo XIX en la explanada homónima, este imponente fuerte posee una planta en forma de pentágono irregular, con dos torres hexagonales, una en el frente y la otra protegiendo la puerta de entrada. Su interior está presidido por una gran plaza de armas, mientras que su recia silueta exterior tiene una apariencia cercana a la de los enclaves defensivos medievales.

Built at the end of the 19th century on the esplanade of the same name, this impressive fortress with its irregular pentagon shape comprises two hexagonal towers, one at the front of the fortress and another protecting its entrance door. Its interior is presided by a huge parade square while its sturdy silhouette resembles a medieval fortress.

Iniciada su construcción por el gobernador Vázquez Angulo en 1657 y concluida por su homólogo Toscano Brito en 1683, a mediados del siglo XVIII es destruida por un virulento temporal, desastre meteorológico que propició su reconstrucción, concluida en 1757. Este lugar de culto, el más antiguo de Melilla, destaca por su cuidada decoración barroca, por sus bellos camarines y capilla en el lado del Evangelio, y por sus magníficas tallas.

The construction of this building was initiated by Governor Vazquez Angulo in 1657 and finished off by his counterpart, Toscano Brito, in 1683. The original building was destroyed during a terrible storm around the middle of the 18th century. It was, however, reconstructed in 1757. Considered Melilla’s oldest religious building, it stands out for rich Baroque style decoration, beautiful chapels and magnificent wood carvings.

Instalado en la antigua Torre de la Vela este interesante y completo espacio museístico sobresale por sus salas de Prehistoria, con una destacable colección de útiles, como puntas de flechas o hachas de piedra pulimentadas, y de Numismática, en la que hay que subrayar las dos piezas, de las seis que se conocen en el mundo, exhibidas de Russadir. Otras secciones se centran en la Antigüedad Clásica, en la Edad Media y en las épocas Moderna y Contemporánea, lo que convierte el recorrido por el Museo de Arqueología e Historia en un entretenido y didáctico paseo por algunas de las épocas más importantes de la Humanidad.

Housed in the ancient Torre de la Vela, this interesting museum stands out for its Prehistory Hall, home of an important number of articles including an interesting variety of polished stone arrowheads and axes. Visitors will find here an important Coin Collection that includes two, of the six that exist in the world, coins from Russadir. The Museum’s exhibits range from the Classical Antiquity to the Middle Ages and Modern and Contemporary periods. A tour of this splendid Archaeological and History Museum will provide an amusing and didactic stroll through some of Humanity’s most important historical periods.

The Autonomous City of Melilla houses over 150 Modernist style buildings that include, amongst others, the Reconquest buildings, Aqueduct, Spanish Casino, Cristales and Tortosa houses, Chamber of Commerce, Assembly Palace etc. This impressive number of Modernist style buildings turns Melilla into Spain’s second, after Barcelona, most important Modernist centre, and the fourth in Europe with regard to the number of buildings. We would mention the importance of the work of the architect, Enrique Nieto, disciple of the famous Modernist architect, Antoni Gaudi, who also carried out an important number of works here for Melilla’s different religious groups.

El Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión de Cáceres es una institución dedicada a la investigación y la formación quirúrgica en las técnicas de este tipo de Cirugía, que en los últimos años se ha convertido en referente internacional de los centros de estas características.

e trata de un Centro pionero en la introducción en nuestro país de la endoscopia y la laparoscopia, así como de la Ergonomía en Cirugía Laparoscópica, que consiste en el estudio de la posición exacta que debe adoptar el médico para aumentar la calidad de las intervenciones de cirugía de mínima invasión. Desde que en el año 1995 comenzara su andadura, como una apuesta decidida de la Junta de Extremadura por la I+D+i, ha cosechado el prestigio y el reconocimiento de la comunidad científica internacional y, en la actualidad, cuenta con 250 colaboradores tanto españoles como extranjeros. Los resultados obtenidos han sido sorprendentes y han puesto de manifiesto el acierto de la administración regional al apostar hace ya dos décadas por la creación e impulso de este centro dedicado a la Ciencia y a la Investigación. Gracias al diseño de proyectos de investigación aplicada y de formación teórica y práctica destinados a profesionales de la medicina, el Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión ha sido merecedor de las certificaciones de calidad de Aenor o IQNET, así como otras acreditaciones de la Sociedad Europea de Endoscopia Gastrointestinal o de la Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología. Cada año, más de 600 profesionales de la Medicina, un 20% de los cuales son extranjeros, acuden a Cáceres para formarse en las técnicas más novedosas de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión que imparte el CCMI. Hitos en Investigación Los logros en materia investigadora han sido numerosos. Algunos de ellos se han podido aplicar en ámbitos tan prometedores como la telemedicina o la telecirugía. Los destacados expertos que día a día trabajan en el CCMI han descifrado importantes claves de la obesidad mórbida, la realidad virtual y simulación quirúrgica, las técnicas de sutura en trasplantes infantiles, el aneurisma de aorta o la terapia celular. he MISC is a modern medical investigation centre pioneer in Spain in laparoscopy and endoscopy techniques and the Ergonomics of Laparoscopic Surgery or, in other words, the study of the points surgeons should aim for when carrying out minimally invasive surgical operations. This important investigation centre forms part of the I+D+i Programme designed by the Regional Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura). Inaugurated in 1995, it has gained an important amount of international prestige enjoying, today, the support of some 250 national and international collaborators. The results obtained to date confirm the regional government’s outstanding forecasts and ratify the need for a centre of investigation of these characteristics. The Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre of Caceres has, thanks to the applied investigation and theoretical and practical training projects aimed at medical professionals, been considered worthy of the Aenor and IQNET standard certificates. It has also received other recommendations from the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and the Inter-Ministerial Commission of Science and Technology amongst others. Over 600 professionals, including some 120 foreigners, visit Caceres each year to take part in the wide range of modern Minimally Invasive Surgical Training programmes offered by the MISC. Investigation Objectives The MISC has, since its inauguration, carried out a large number of successful investigations some of which have been applied to promising areas such as telemedicine and telesurgery. Its excellent MISC professionals have resolved a number of important factors with regard to morbid obesity, surgical simulation and virtual reality, transplant suturing techniques in children, aortic aneurism and cellular therapy amongst others. Its investigation programmes include the development of medical and surgical techniques, the application of diagnostic imaging systems, the study of biomaterials and the application of new surgical instruments.

The Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre of Caceres (Centro de Cirugia de Minima Invasion de Caceres), an international medical centre engaged in the investigation and surgical training of minimally invasive surgery techniques, has become over the past few years an international reference point with regard to this type of investigation.

Nuevo CCMI En el trascurso de las dos últimas décadas, las actuales instalaciones del Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión han quedado pequeñas para atender las demandas de la comunidad científica. Por este motivo, en 2004 se decidió que era necesario disponer de mayores y más modernas infraestructuras y se proyectó construir un nuevo Centro. Desde entonces, el impulso del mismo ha sido notable gracias al esfuerzo de la Consejería de Infraestructuras y Desarrollo Tecnológico de la Junta de Extremadura, responsable en la actualidad de la I+d+i en la región. Las instalaciones del nuevo complejo de 14.000 metros cuadrados se han proyectado sobre una superficie de media hectárea. El compromiso por mantener una investigación de vanguardia parece haberse trasladado a la idea constructiva y el resultado ha sido un ambicioso proyecto arquitectónico adaptado a las peculiaridades de un centro de estas características, en el que el programa funcional es múltiple y diverso. Para ello se ha dividido en distintos usos y se ha planteado como una estructura geométrica reconocible y perfectamente integrada en el paisaje circundante. El nuevo edificio también potencia el valor humano, ya que en su organización interna se ha dotado de áreas de trabajo confortables en las que se han tenido en cuenta múltiples parámetros como la orientación solar o la iluminación y ventilación natural de las zonas interiores. Además, las instalaciones están concebidas para funciones multidisciplinares, por ello, el edificio se divide en áreas de laboratorio, quirúrgica, animalario, así como área administrativa y científica, y de informática y técnicas de comunicación. Edificio de última generación Con el ánimo de afrontar nuevos retos y siempre bajo la premisa de la calidad, el nuevo Centro contará con las instalaciones más avanzadas y específicas de edificios sanitarios de última generación. Se complementará con un sistema completo de reproducción de imágenes, audio, voz y datos. New MISC Headquarters The installations of the MISC have, due to its extraordinary success and the demands of the scientific community, become insufficient. It was decided, therefore, to correct this situation by constructing a new Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre. The works on this new centre began in 2004 under the supervision of the Department of Planning and Technological Development (Consejeria de Infraestruras y Desarrollo Technologico) of the Regional Government of Extremadura, responsible for I+D+i in this region. The new Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre is being constructed on a plot of land of approximately half a hectare. The installations will, once constructed, cover a total surface area of 14,000 square meters. This ambitious project has been designed to meet the numerous needs of this type of medical investigation centre. The new Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre will be divided into a number of different areas and will be housed in a geometric structure designed to blend in perfectly with its surroundings. These new installations will include a number of outstanding features. We would mention, amongst others, a variety of functional working areas with special attention on the orientation of the building so as to produce natural lighting and ventilation wherever possible. The new Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre will be equipped with a number of multidisciplinary areas to include laboratory, surgical, animal, administrative, scientific, computer and communication departments. State-of-the-art Installations This new Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre will also be equipped with a wide variety of state-of-the-art equipment that will turn it into one of Europe’s most modern medical investigations centres and will include a complete image, audio, voice and data reproduction system. The surgical area will be equipped with “intelligent operating theatres” together with a system for the management and control of the installations regarding medicinal gases, acclimatization and humidity and temperature control. “The MISC is the flag ship of the technological revolution in Extremadura” ¿Puede considerase el CCMI el buque insignia de la I+D+i en Extremadura? En cierto modo sí, admitiendo la singularidad de su temática. Nace desde la Universidad como motor y Centro generador de Conocimiento, ligado al concepto de Universidad al servicio de la Sociedad. Se desarrolla a partir de una idea emprendedora, apoyada por la Administración Autonómica, en el mundo de la Sociedad de la Información y alcanza su cumbre en la Sociedad del Conocimiento y de la Imaginación. Nos viene a dar un ejemplo de que las comunidades, los países, se miden cada vez más –y muy pronto de forma casi única– por su capacidad de generar y compartir Conocimiento. Además, es un ejemplo del lema que la Junta de Extremadura ha abanderado “pensar en global y actuar en local”. En definitiva el CCMI es un puntal de la revolución tecnológica de Extremadura iniciada a principios de los '90, pero ha habido otras experiencias destacadas como el desarrollo de la Universidad de Extremadura, Fundecyt o los Centros Tecnológicos.

Could the new MISC be considered the flag ship of I+D+i in Extremadura? Yes, in a way, if we take into consideration the singularity of this project. This important project, engine and generator of knowledge, will be responsible for placing the concept of University at the service of Society. It is the result of an enterprising idea that, thanks to the support of the Regional Government of Extremadura, brings together the world of Information, Knowledge and Imagination. It is an excellent example of how communities and countries are, more than ever, evaluated for their capacity to generate and communicate Knowledge. It also an excellent illustration of the slogan of the Regional Government of Extremadura: “Think globally, act locally”. The MISC is, without a doubt, an important part of the technological revolution of Extremadura, initiated at the beginning of the 90’s, along with other projects such as the construction of the University of Extremadura, Fundecyt and its Technological Centres.

¿Es posible que Extremadura haya pasado de tener una economía agraria a ser puntera en tecnología e innovación sin haber pasado por la fase de industrialización? Es indudable que es posible y prueba de ello es el caso del CCMI, entre otros. Las Nuevas Tecnologías no necesitan haber pasado por etapas anteriores como la de la industrialización para su desarrollo. Es más, el gran error sería pasar primero por esas fases, pues cuando se hubieran terminado los que van por delante estarían más desarrollados aún. En el mundo actual, los conocimientos y la información circulan a una velocidad increíblemente más rápida que lo que ocurría hace sólo unos años, de forma que una sociedad en desarrollo no tiene necesariamente que recorrer el mismo camino, y en el mismo tiempo, que recorrieron las sociedades que hoy están más avanzadas. Se pueden saltar etapas aprendiendo de los errores y los aciertos de otros. En Extremadura es posible seguir ese camino y, para ello, necesitamos el gran dinamismo de nuestras empresas y nuestros emprendedores, apoyados por las Administraciones Públicas, sobre la base de unos objetivos concretos a alcanzar y un programa para alcanzarlos. La nueva sociedad se basa en el conocimiento libre y la imaginación, y nosotros estamos demostrando ser punteros en innovación y desarrollo tecnológico, partiendo de cualquier punto, sólo con el requisito de aportar el conocimiento.

Has Extremadura, in your opinion, become a pioneer in technology and innovation without having had to go through the stage of industrialisation? This is highly likely. The Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre is, amongst other things, proof of this. New technologies do not necessarily need to go through an earlier stage, industrialisation for example, as part of their development. I would go even further and say that it would be a great mistake to go through unnecessary stages. This would give those at the forefront an even further advantage. In today’s world, knowledge and information circulate at an incredible pace, much faster than a few years ago, in such a way that a developing society does not necessarily have to follow the same path, and at the same rate, as other more advanced societies. It is possible to avoid certain stages by learning from the mistakes and successes of others. In Extremadura, we have decided to take the path to success. However, to continue where others have failed, we need dynamism, local entrepreneurs backed by regional and local authorities equipped with a variety of clear objectives and an efficient plan of action. Today’s society is based on free knowledge and lots of imagination. We are assuming the role of pioneers in innovation and technological development with the sole purpose of providing knowledge.

Con una consolidada trayectoria y a punto de estrenar unas extraordinarias instalaciones, ¿cuál debe ser el reto de futuro para el CCMI? Lo importante es seguir la línea maestra en el desarrollo de nuestra política en I+D+i. Y es que el nuevo edificio del CCMI es consecuencia de una idea, de un exitoso proyecto, y no a la inversa como a veces se pueda pensar. EL CCMI, además de seguir creciendo en su tarea como Centro de Referencia en Cirugía mínimamente invasiva, debe potenciar en su ámbito el espíritu emprendedor de creación de empresas de base tecnológica en su entorno, poniendo como ejemplo su trayectoria y como valor su conocimiento.

What are the future plans of the MISC now that it has consolidated its trajectory and is about to inaugurate its new headquarters? The most important thing is to continue with our plans for the development of our I+D+i Policy. The new MISC installations are the result of an idea, the development of a successful project, and not the reverse as could be thought. The new Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre should, in addition to increasing its prestige as a reference point in minimally invasive surgery, promote the spirit of enterprise in the development of technological companies in this area using its trajectory as an example and its knowledge as a value.

SAT Mutua de Accidentes ha distinguido a AIR NOSTRUM con el premio a la mejor de sus empresas por la baja siniestralidad laboral registrada. La entidad otorgó la distinción a la aerolínea después de que ésta quedara en primera posición entre 30.000 firmas, por su reducida siniestralidad laboral. El Director General de Trabajo y Seguridad Laboral de la Generalitat Valenciana, Román Ceballos, presidió la entrega del galardón al presidente de AIR NOSTRUM, Emilio Serratosa, que recogió la distinción de manos del presidente de dicha Mutua, Josep Casas. Al acto, que tuvo lugar el pasado 6 de octubre en las instalaciones de la firma valenciana, también asistieron otros representantes de las mutuas SAT y Egara.

Castillo de Javier: During the whole of 2006. Built in the municipality of the same name between the 10th and 16th centuries, this magnificent castle, declared a monument of cultural interest by a regional government decree dated 2nd February, 1994, will host a number of events organised to celebrate the V centennial of the birth of San Francisco Javier that will include, amongst other things, concerts, theatre performances and the presentation of publications with regard to the life, cultural legacy and teachings of this famous saint from Navarra.

This retrospective exhibition of work carried out over the last decade of this influential North American artist, together with two film projections, is made up of 278 drawings that include not only a number of series but also a variety of recurring themes regarding the North American culture.
