Namibias Dünen eilen immer schneller nach Norden

Zeiten und heftigen Atlantikwinden geformte Sandmeer der Namib-Wüste ist seit einer Million Jahren in Bewegung, mit steigender Tendenz. Wie das „Earth Observatory“ der NASA jetzt mitteilte, haben neu ausgewertete Satellitenfotos der Serie Landsat 8 und 9, die zwischen 2013 und 2022 aufgenommen wurden (eine Szene pro Jahr) schnellere Bewegungen gezeigt.

Die Dünen im Sperrgebiet der südlichen Namib-Wüste seien in den letzten Jahrzehnten mehrere Kilometer nach Norden gewandert, hauptsächlich angetrieben durch die anhaltenden Süd-Südwest-Winde. Forscher des Desert Research Institute und der Smithsonian Institution nutzten Satellitenbeobachtungen des Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) auf dem Terra-Satelliten der NASA, um die Be-

wegung der Dünen über acht Jahre zu untersuchen. Sie stellten fest, dass die durchschnittliche Geschwindigkeit bei Dünen dort zwischen sieben und 32 Metern pro Jahr erreichte. Einige kleinere Dünen waren viel schneller und erreichten sogar 83 Meter pro Jahr. Kleine Dünen wandern schneller als große, weil einfach weniger Material zu bewegen ist. Dem Earth Observartory zufolge tendieren große Wanderdünen

dazu, ihre Form beizubehalten. Sie bewegten sich laut der Forscher mit durchschnittlich etwa neun Metern pro Jahr. „Die Verfolgung von Dünen mit Satellitenbildern über Jahre und Jahrzehnte zeigt, dass kleinere Dünen regelmäßig auftauchen und an den größeren sichelförmigen Dünen vorbeiziehen“, teilte das Erdobservatorium der NASA mit. „Dadurch gehören die Dünen des Sperrgebiets zu den sich am schnell-

s war ein trauriges Jahr für den Artenschutz in Namibia, denn die Zahlen, die das Ministerium für Tourismus und Umwelt herausgegeben hat, sind erschreckend. Demnach fielen 2022 Wilderern insgesamt 77 Nashörner wegen des begehrten Nasenhorns zum Opfer. Das sind seit 2013 die drittmeisten Vorfälle hinter 2013 mit 97 gewilderten Dickhäutern und 2015 mit 84 getöteten Nashörnern. Die Statistiken aus den Vorjahren zählen weniger Fälle von Jagdfrevel auf. So waren es 2020 61, 2019 sechs weniger, 2017 66 und im Jahr davor 56 tote Nashörner. Dagegen verzeichnete das Ministerium bei der Wilderei von Elefanten nur vier Tötungen. Im Vorjahr waren es noch zehn gewesen. Auch 2020 waren es mit 12 deutlich mehr

Elefanten, die Wilderern zum Opfer gefallen sind. Zieht man die Statistiken aus den Jahren 2016 bis 2019 zu Rate, dann sinkt die Zahl der Tötung dieser Dickhäuter stetig, wobei 2016 mit 101 Elefanten besonders negativ heraussticht. Im Jahr darauf hatte sich die Ziffer mit 50 bereits auf die Hälfte reduziert. Zwölf Monate später wiederum um rund 50 Prozent (27) und auch im Jahr darauf halbierte sich die Summe erneut (13). In diesem Jahr habe es bisher zwar noch keine Fälle gegeben, wie der Sprecher der Behörde, Romeo Muyunda, bestätigte, dennoch habe es bereits Versuche gegeben, Tiere zu wildern. Beweise dazu wurden im Etoscha-Nationalpark entdeckt. Es gibt auch schon die Verhaftung eines Verdächtigen, der laut Polizeibericht aus Okangwati stammen und einen Versuch gewagt haben soll. dem 4. und 6. Januar ereignet, bei dem der Verdächtige dann mit einer Waffe und scharfer Munition aufgegriffen wurde, nachdem man den Spuren von Wilderern gefolgt war. Vorherige Ermittlungen führten bereits zu dem Schluss, dass mehrere Verdächtige mit Ziel des Jagdfrevels in den Etoscha-Park eingedrungen seien, um Nashörner zu jagen und an das Nasenhorn zu gelangen. Dem ergriffenen Verdächtigen wird zur Last gelegt, mit dem Vorsatz der Wilderei illegal in den Etoscha-Park eingedrungen zu sein. Außerdem muss er sich wegen illegalen Waffenbesitzes verantworten. Weiterhin gibt der Bericht des Mi-

nisteriums darüber Auskunft, dass im letzten Jahr 106 Verdächtige wegen genau dieser Delikte arretiert worden seien. Von diesen sind 44 wegen Nashorn- und 62 wegen Elefantenwilderei in Haft. „Es ist schändlich, dass 93 der Inhaftierten Namibier sind“, merkte Muyunda an. Bei den anderen handele es sich um Angolaner (8) und Sambier (7). Das Ministerium hat seit 2014 in viele Programme zur Bekämpfung der Wilderei über ganz Namibia investiert. Muyunda gab aber auch zu Bedenken, dass es der Beteiligung aller betroffenen Parteien bedarf, um den Kampf gegen die Wilderei erfolgreich zu führen.

Nützliche Daten von automatisierten Wetterstationen können in solchen Situationen hilfreich sein und die ländliche Bevölkerung frühzeitig warnen. Die meisten dieser neuen Wetterstationen sind allerdings von Vandalen zerstört worden. Das teilte der Minister für Landwirtschaft, Wasser und Landreform, Calle Schlettwein, gestern in den sozialen Medien mit. „Wir hatten Stationen für alle Flüsse, auch die im zentralen Norden. Viele Stationen sind zerstört oder die Ausrüstung gestohlen worden. Das so wichtige Frühwarnsystem für die bevorstehenden Efundjas funktioniert nicht mehr“, schrieb der Minister. Bei guten Niederschlägen füllen sich die Senken (Oshanas) im sogenannten Cuvelai-System. Wenn sie überlaufen, fließt das Wasser in Rinnsalen weiter nach Südosten bis nach Namibia und füllt dort die Oshanas. Das kann auch Hochwasser (Efundja) verursachen. Davor warnte jetzt ein Hydrologe im Agrarministerium. So berichtete das NBC-Fernsehen und zitierte diese Woche Leonard Hango, der vor Efundjas warnte. Das Wasser käme von Ondjiva und Namacunde in Südangola nahe der Grenze zu Namibia.

dem ein schockierendes Video über Soldaten kursierte, die in Mosambik Leichen auf einen brennenden Trümmerhaufen warfen, hat jetzt auch Präsident Hage Geingob reagiert. Die Soldaten trugen Uniformen der SADC-Eingreiftruppe. Geingob teilte als derzeitiger Vorsitzender des Gremiums für Politik, Verteidigung und Sicherheit der Staatengemeinschaft im südlichen Afrika (SADC) am Donnerstag mit, dass Ermittlungen eingeleitet wurden. Die Leitung der SADC-Mission in Mosambik (SAMIM) werde die Ergebnisse anschließend veröffentlichen. „Ich möchte kategorisch betonen, dass die SADC die in dem Video wiedergegebenen Handlungen nicht duldet und nach Abschluss der Ermittlungen entsprechende Maßnahmen im Einklang mit dem internationalen Recht des bewaffneten Konflikts ergreifen wird“, teilte Geingob in einer Presseerklärung mit. Die SAMIM-Truppe habe sich (bisher) stets professionell, effizient und verantwortungsbewusst in Übereinstimmung mit den geltenden Gesetzen und den Einsatzregeln verhalten. SAMIM wurde am 15. Juli 2021 in der Provinz Cabo Delgado von Mosambik als regionale Reaktion zur Unterstützung bei der Bekämpfung von Terrorismus und gewaltbereitem Extremismus eingesetzt. Dort stiften seit rund sechs Jahren islamistische Gruppen durch Morden, Rauben und Zerstörung Unruhe. Tausende Menschen wurden bereits vertrieben. Laut Geingob habe sich die Lage im Norden von Mosambik seit dem Einsatz der SAMIM verbessert. In diesem Zusammenhang werde die SADCGemeinschaft Mosambik weiterhin durch die SAMIM bei der Bekämpfung von Terrorismus und gewaltbereiten extremistischen Gruppen in der Provinz Cabo Delgado unterstützen. Sie sollen die terroristische Bedrohung neutralisieren und die Sicherheit in dem Gebiet wiederherstellen und den Weg für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung von Mosambik in der SADC-Region voranbringen, so Geingob.

Die 71. Miss Universe-Vorwahl, an der Cassia Sharpley, Miss Universe Namibia 2022, teilnahm, fand in New Orleans (Louisiana, Amerika) statt. Sie betrat die Miss Universe-Bühne in New Orleans in ihrem Nationalkostüm, das den Nationalvogel des Landes, den Fischadler, darstellen soll, um die Fauna Namibias zu feiern. Das Kleid wurde von der Miss Namibia-Organisation selbst konzipiert und in Zusammenarbeit mit ihrer Kostümabteilung und Lloyd Kandlin entworfen. Die Kandidatinnen präsentierten sich auch in ihren Abendkleidern und Badeanzügen. Das Finale ist für Samstag angesetzt und wird auf dem offiziellen Miss Universe YouTube-Kanal live in alle Welt gestreamt. Staat: Zu wenig Dialyse-Geräte • Patienten werden zumeist an Privateinrichtungen überwiesen Weil Staatshospitäler aktuell nicht über genügend DialyseGeräte verfügen, werden die meisten Kassenpatienten zur Dialyse an private Einrichtungen verwiesen. Das kostet das Gesundheitsministerium jährlich Millionen von Dollar. Im Rahmen einer neuen Kampagne sollen jetzt mehr Dialysestühle für staatliche Einrichtungen beschafft werden. as Gesundheitsministerium gibt jährlich mehr als 50 Millionen N$ für Dialysedienstleistungen in privaten Einrichtungen aus, an die Kassenpatienten überwiesen werden, da es im Ministerium an Dialyse-Geräten mangelt. Dialyse ist ein Verfahren, mit dem das Blut eines Menschen von giftigen Stoffen gereinigt wird, wenn seine Nieren dazu nicht mehr in der Lage sind. Das Ministerium verfügt derzeit über nur etwa 20 Dialysestühle im ganzen Land, einschließlich der jüngst beschafften sechs Geräte in der ursprünglich für CoronaPatienten eingerichteten Station im Katutura-Hospital. Der Staatssekretär für Gesundheit, Ben Nangombe, sagte, man habe eine Kampagne begonnen, um die Zahl der Dialysestühle im

Bei diesen Krankheiten kann die Behandlung nicht aufgeschoben werden, weshalb wir sie an private Einrichtungen überweisen”, sagte Nangombe. Er fügte hinzu, dass man zwar mit einem deutlichen Rückgang der öffentlichen Ausgaben für Dialysedienstleistungen rechne, sobald mehr Stühle von der Regierung angeschafft worden seien, einige Patienten aber dennoch an private Einrichtungen überwiesen würden, sobald die staatlichen Kapazitäten erschöpft seien. ie Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) werden sich noch in diesem Jahr mit dem Thema Service und vor allem mit der mangelnden Dienstleistung im EtoschaNationalpark beschäftigen. Dazu gehöre auch eine umfassende und intensive Schulung des Personals. Laut des NWR-Managers für Unternehmenskommunikation und OnlineMedien, Nelson Ashipala, streite man Beschwerden unter anderem über schlechte Serviceleistungen und überhöhte Preise nicht ab. Er stellte aber klar, dass „wir uns darum kümmern und die Infrastruktur mit Renovierungen verbessern.” Ashipala räumte ein, dass die Renovierung der Infrastruktur noch nicht abgeschlossen sei, lediglich die Sanierung von Onkoshi sei vollendet. „Wir wissen, dass die meisten der Einrichtungen alt sind. Wir bitten um Geduld, während wir unsere Infrastruktur erneuern.” Diese Reformbemühungen folgen auf wachsende Kritik namibischer und ausländischer Touristen am Zustand der NWR-Einrichtungen: Ein vielzitierter Besucher, der den Park während der Ferienzeit besuchte, schrieb in einem in den sozialen Medien verbreiteten Beitrag, es sei, als ob die „wunderschönen Tiere ihr Bestes täten, um die

Inkompetenz, Gleichgültigkeit und das Desinteresse der Menschen auszugleichen”. Seine Gruppe habe mehr als eine Stunde warten müssen, um den Park zu betreten, „weil die Person am Tor nicht schreiben konnte”. Es habe an Formularen gemangelt und Personenangaben seien falsch zitiert worden. Zudem beklagte sich der Tourist über horrende Preise in den von NWR betriebenen Restaurants. Die Regale im Kiosk seien meist leer gewe-

sen und die Straßen voller Löcher und Gräben. Der größte Schock sei jedoch der Zustand der öffentlichen Toiletten in Okakuejo gewesen, der „zu schlecht ist, um darüber zu reden”. Laut Ashipala fällt der Zugang zum Park in den Zuständigkeitsbereich des Ministeriums für Umwelt, Forstwirtschaft und Tourismus (MEFT) – es solle eine Unterscheidung zwischen den vom Ministerium und den von NWR verwalteten Einrichtungen gemacht werden. In Bezug auf das teure Menü sagt Ashipala, dass die Inflation und die Entfernung des Parks und der Rastlager von den Annehmlichkeiten der Städte berücksichtigt werden müssten. „Wir haben das untersucht und werden dort, wo Änderungen

möglich sind, diese auch vornehmen.“ Die Nichtverfügbarkeit von Lebensmitteln komme in der Branche gelegentlich vor. Das MEFT hatte indes Ende letzten Jahres angekündigt, es wolle alle Straßen im Park bis zum Ende der Ferienzeit repariert haben. Nach Angaben des Sprechers, Romeo Muyunda, hat sich der Straßenzustand im Park verschlechtert, weil die Maschinen, die zum Glätten der Straßen verwendet werden, repariert werden mussten. Die Straßen im Südosten des Parks zwischen Okaukuejo, Halali und Namutoni sollten demnach bis zum Ende der Weihnachtszeit repariert werden. Nach einer kürzlich abgegebenen Erklärung hat das Ministerium bereits

35 Millionen N$ in die Verbesserung des Straßennetzes im Park investiert. Insgesamt wurden 195 km Straßennetz gebaut und fertiggestellt. Davon entfallen 69 km auf die Strecke zwischen Sonderkop und Olifantsrus und 126 km auf die Strecke zwischen Olifantsrus und dem Galton Gate, einschließlich des Dolomite-Abstechers zur Küste, für die 35 Millionen N$ aufgewendet wurden. Weitere 71,3 Millionen N$ sollen in die 86 km lange Straße zwischen Ozonjuitji und M’bari nach Okaukuejo investiert werden. Muyunda sagte, dass das Ministerium auch eine neue Strategie zur Instandhaltung von Straßen (insgesamt etwa 213 km) entwickelt habe, die kürzlich vom Kabinett genehmigt wurde.

Wasserpegel ähnlich wie im Vorjahr

Fünf namibische Staudämme zu mehr als 70 Prozent gefüllt – gute Regensaison prophezeit Windhoek (es/sno) • Obwohl Namibia die

ersten flutartigen Regenfälle des Jahres zu verzeichnen hatte, sind nur geringe Zuflüsse in einigen Staudämmen in den zentralen Landesteilen verzeichnet worden. Bisher wurden Zuflüsse in den Staudämmen Omatako und Von Bach verzeichnet. Laut des letzten Standes des Dämme-Bulletin, das NamWater am Montag herausgegeben hat, sind fünf der Staudämme des Landes noch zu mehr als 70 % gefüllt. Der durchschnittliche Gesamtpegel der namibischen Dämme lag zu Beginn dieser Woche bei 71,4 %, im Vergleich zu 73,2 % im vergangenen Jahr. In den zentralen Gebieten Namibias lag der durchschnittliche Pegel der Dämme bei 42,7 %, während er im vergangenen Jahr 58,6 % betrug. Der Swakoppoort-Damm ist jetzt zu 73,3 % gefüllt, der Von-Bach-Damm zu 31,6 % und der Omatako-Damm zu 0,5 %. Der Friende-

nau-Damm ist inzwischen zu 74,2 % gefüllt und der Goreangab-Damm zu 100 %. Im Süden liegt der durchschnittliche Füllstand der Dämme bei 80,3 %, verglichen mit 79,7 % im Vorjahr. Der größte Staudamm Namibias, der Neckartal-Damm, ist zu 93,7 % gefüllt. Das bedeutet, dass er derzeit über 803 562 Millionen Kubikmeter Wasser enthält. Im vergangenen Jahr waren es noch 92,5 %. Der Hardap-Damm ist derzeit zu 48,5 % gefüllt, der Naute-Damm zu 76,2 % und der OanobDamm zu 65,7 %. Der Dreihuk-Damm ist zu 4,9 % gefüllt und der Bondels-Damm ist leer. Im Osten des Landes liegt der durchschnittliche Füllstand der Dämme bei nur 13,4 %, weit weniger als im vergangenen Jahr, als sie noch zu 42,2 % gefüllt waren. Der Otjivero-Hauptdamm ist zu 19,9 % gefüllt, der Tilda Viljoen-Damm zu 34,9 % und der Daan Viljoen-Damm zu 31,6 %. In anderen Teilen des Landes ist der Olushandja-Damm in der

Oshana-Region zu 12 % gefüllt, verglichen mit 14,1 % im vergangenen Jahr. Sowohl der Omaruru-Delta-Damm in Erongo als auch der Omatjenne-Damm in Otjozondjupa sind wie im vergangenen Jahr leer.

Niederschlagsvorhersage

Nach der jüngsten Niederschlagsvorhersage des meteorologischen Dienstes von Namibia werden im gesamten Land von Januar bis April normale bis überdurchschnittliche Niederschläge erwartet. Auch für den Mai bleibt diese Vorhersage unverändert. Eine Ausnahme bilden die weiten südwestlichsten Landesteile, wo normale bis unterdurchschnittliche Niederschläge erwartet werden. eue pikante Enthüllungen bieten den Republikanern neues Futter bei ihren Angriffen gegen US-Präsident Joe Biden: Nach dem Fund von Geheimdokumenten in einem ehemaligen privaten Büro Bidens sollen Medienberichten zufolge weitere Regierungsunterlagen gefunden worden sein. Sie seien von Biden-Mitarbeitern bei der Durchsuchung eines zweiten Standorts entdeckt worden, berichteten mehrere US-Medien. Eine Bestätigung aus dem Weißen Haus gab es dafür zunächst nicht. Viele Fragen zu dem neuen Fund waren noch offen - darunter der Inhalt der Dokumente sowie Fundort und der Zeitpunkt. Dem Sender NBC zufolge handelt es sich erneut um Geheimunterlagen. Erst am Montag war öffentlich geworden, dass Biden geheime Unterlagen aus seiner Zeit als US-Vize unter dem damaligen Präsidenten Barack Obama in seinen privaten Büroräumen im Penn Biden Center in der Hauptstadt Washing-

Biden habe die Räumlichkeiten nach seinem Ausscheiden aus dem Amt des Vizepräsidenten 2017 bis etwa 2020 genutzt, hieß es aus dem Weißen Haus. Diese Unterlagen seien umgehend dem Nationalarchiv übergeben worden. Bei den Dokumenten handelt es sich Berichten zufolge um mindestens zehn geheime Papiere, einige mit höchster Geheimhaltungsstufe. Biden hatte sich als Reaktion auf den am Montag bekannt gewordenen Fund überrascht gegeben. Er wisse nicht, wer die Dokumente dorthin gebracht habe oder was sie beinhalteten. Gleichzeitig versprach der Demokrat „volle Kooperation“ bei den Untersuchungen. Die Situation ist für

Biden politisch äußerst heikel, denn mit einem ähnlich Fall hatte sein Vorgänger Donald Trump im Sommer für einen Skandal gesorgt. Biden hatte Trump daraufhin kritisiert. Dass nun mutmaßlich noch weitere Unterlagen gefunden worden sind, bestärkt die Republikaner in ihren Attacken gegen Biden. Trump teilte auf dem von ihm mitbegründeten Netzwerk Truth Social Berichte zu dem neuem Fund. Im Repräsentantenhaus wollen die Republikaner mit ihrer zurückeroberten Mehrheit Biden ohnehin mit Untersuchungen vor sich hertreiben. Sie haben nun etwa die Befugnis, Personen vorzuladen oder Dokumente anzufordern. In verschieden Gremien

soll beleuchtetet werden, wie Biden den Abzug aus Afghanistan abgewickelt hat. Auch die Geschäftsbeziehungen von Bidens Sohn Hunter und die nun aufgetauchten Geheimunterlagen werden Thema sein. Nach dem ersten Fund im November hätten Biden-Mitarbeiter weitere Orte nach Regierungsdokumenten durchsucht, berichtete der Sender CNN über die neuerliche Entdeckung. Dabei sei die zweite Tranche gefunden worden. Es war offen, ob noch weitere Dokumente darüber hinaus entdeckt wurden. Das Weiße Haus wich am Mittwoch kritischen Frage zu dem ersten Fund aus und verwies lediglich auf eine Erklärung von Montag.

Deutschland ist die wichtigste Handball-Nation in Europa und entsprechend wichtig für die ganze Sportart“, sagte Jacobsen dem ,,Mannheimer Morgen” gestern. Der 51-Jährige führte die Dänen 2019 und 2021 zum WM-Titel. Die DHB-Auswahl bezeichnet er als „eine sehr spannende Mannschaft mit einem erfahrenen Trainer, was ich für eine gute Mischung halte“. Allerdings glaubt der frühere Bundesligaspieler und -trainer, „dass es noch ein wenig dauern wird, bis dieses Team auch richtig weit bei einem Turnier kommen kann“. Mit der Bundesliga hat Jacobsen, der die Rhein-Neckar Löwen 2016 und 2017 zum Meistertitel führte, „noch nicht abgeschlossen“. Lagos (dpa) • Der Deutsche Fußball-Bund (DFB) hat die Schiedsrichter und Assistenten der 1. und 2. Bundesliga in einem sechstägigen Trainingslager an der Algarve angewiesen, Unsportlichkeiten und Zeitspiel stärker in den Blick zu nehmen. Dafür seien die Referees ,‚nochmal sensibilisiert“ worden, teilte der Sportliche Leiter Peter Sippel bei DFBTV mit. Dies sei aber „kein großer Richtungswechsel“, es gehe um die Konsequenz.

Der Grund für mehrere Stromausfälle während des ersten Rennens beim Biathlon-Weltcup in Ruhpolding ist neben einer technischen Störung im Stromnetz auch der Ausfall eines Notfall-Systems gewesen. Zwar sei die Reserve-Einheit vor dem Wettkampf am Mittwoch ausreichend getestet worden, trotzdem funktionierte die sogenannte Battery Box nicht. RÄTSEL UM PURPURFARBENEN TEICH IM HILDESHEIMER WALD

Ein Teich in der Nähe von Hildesheim sorgt wegen seiner Farbe derzeit für Aufsehen. Das Gewässer in der Gemeinde Sibbesse ist purpurfarben, wie auf Bildern zu erkennen ist. Offenbar seien Bakterien der Grund für die Verfärbung, so der Niedersächsische Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz (NLWKN). Gewässerverfärbungen könnten ganz unterschiedliche Gründe haben, sagte Hans-Heinrich Schuster vom SeenKompetenzzentrum des NLWKN in Sulingen (Landkreis Diepholz). „Solche typischen Verfärbungen haben häufig den Hintergrund, dass dort Mikroorganismen tätig sind - und das sind hier sehr wahrscheinlich Purpurbakterien“. Häufig seien Kleinstgewässer von diesen Bakterien betroffen. Sie könnten aber auch in sehr tiefen Seen vorkommen, wo es in tieferen Schichten kaum Sauerstoff gibt, erläuterte Schuster. Von einem Betreten der Gewässer rät der Experte ab. Bei den Bakterien handele es sich allerdings nicht um Blaualgen, die manchmal auch eine rötliche Färbung haben könnten. Die in Hamburg geborene Patitz sei am Mittwoch im Alter von 56 Jahren im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien gestorben, teilte ihre Model-Agentur in New York mit. Singapur (dpa) • Die Ölpreise haben am Donnerstagmorgen ihre am Vortag erzielten Aufschläge halten können. Im frühen Handel kostete ein Barrel (159 Liter) der Nordseesorte Brent 82,78 US-Dollar. Das waren 11 Cent mehr als am Vortag. Der Preis für ein Barrel der amerikanischen Sorte West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stieg ebenfalls leicht auf 77,49 Dollar.

Liverpool (dpa) • Drei Wochen nach tödlichen Schüssen auf eine junge Frau vor einem Pub bei Liverpool hat die Polizei zwei weitere Menschen festgenommen. Ein 22-Jähriger stehe unter Mordverdacht, einer 23-Jährigen werde Beihilfe vorgeworfen, teilte die Polizei mit. Damit sind bisher insgesamt fünf Menschen in Zusammenhang mit der Bluttat am späten Heiligabend festgenommen worden. Allerdings wurden die bisherigen Verdächtigen wieder auf freien Fuß gelassen.

urch den Eintrag von Sedimenten drohen große Staudämme weltweit einer UN-Studie zufolge bis 2050 im Mittel rund ein Viertel ihrer ursprünglichen Speicherkapazität zu verlieren. Der geschätzte Verlust gegenüber der ursprünglichen Kapazität summiere sich bei den rund 50 000 berücksichtigten Anlagen auf 1,65 Billionen Kubikmeter, was in etwa dem jährlichen Wasserverbrauch von Indien, China, Indonesien, Frankreich und Kanada zusammen entspreche, teilte die Universität der Vereinten Nationen mit. Das Ausmaß der Verluste sei beunruhigend, zumal die Welt bereits mit einer Reihe weiterer Wasserversorgungsprobleme konfrontiert sei. Staudämme schränken den natürlichen Sedimenttransport der Flüsse ein. Durch die abgelagerten Sedimente verlanden viele Stauseen nach und nach, zudem drohen flussaufwärts verstärkt Überschwemmungen sowie flussabwärts verstärkt Erosion. Der Eintrag in die Speicherbecken sei zu einer der bedeutendsten Herausforderungen für die weltweite Wasserspeicher-Infrastruktur geworden,

berichtet das Team um Duminda Perera vom Institut für Wasser, Umwelt und Gesundheit der United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) in Hamilton (Kanada).

Kein Ausgleich durch Neubau

„Der Rückgang der verfügbaren Speicherkapazität bis 2050 in allen Ländern und Regionen wird viele Aspekte der Volkswirtschaften in Frage stellen, darunter die Bewässerung, die Stromerzeugung und die Wasserversorgung“, sagte Perera. „Die neuen Dämme, die derzeit gebaut werden oder geplant sind, werden die durch Sedimentation verursachten Speicherverluste nicht ausgleichen.“ In Asien zum Beispiel, wo 60 Prozent der Weltbevölkerung leben, ist die Wasserspeicherung von entscheidender Bedeutung für die Erhaltung der Wasser- und Ernährungssicherheit, wie es in der UN-Analyse heißt. Die Lage werde schwieriger, wenn dort rund 23 Prozent der Wasserspeicher in großen Staudämmen aufgrund von Sedimentation verloren gingen.

Probleme für Flora und Fauna

Die Ablagerung von Sedimenten etwa in Stauseen bringe aber nicht nur Probleme in der Wasser- und Energiever-

sorgung mit sich, berichtete Theresa Schiller, Referentin für internationale Wasserressourcen der Umweltstiftung WWF Deutschland. Demnach spielten Sedimente etwa eine zentrale Rolle dafür, welche Form ein Fluss auf seinem Weg von der Quelle bis zum Meer annimmt. Zudem wirkten Sedimente bei der natürlichen Überflutung von Ufern als Dünger. „Bleibt der Sedimenttransport aus, kann das dazu führen, dass sich Flüsse tiefer ins Bett eingraben und Uferregionen stärker unter Trockenheit leiden“, so Schiller. Außerdem fehlten dann für viele Ökosysteme und die Landwirtschaft wichtige Nährstoffe. Die Forscher um Perera hatten aus Schätzungen der Verlandungsraten den wahrscheinlichen Verlust an Speicherkapazität für mehr als 47 400 große Staubecken in 150 Ländern für die Jahre 2022, 2030 und 2050 errechnet. Gut 28 000 der Bauwerke liegen im asiatisch-pazifischen Raum, rund 2 300 in Afrika, etwa 6 700 in Europa und 10 400 in Amerika. Eine Alternative sei das Erhöhen des Damms, um den Speicherverlust auszugleichen, erläutern die Wissenschaftler. Allerdings werde dadurch die Fläche des Stausees vergrößert, was Folgen für angrenzende Lebensräume haben könne. Möglich seien auch kostspielige Ausbaggerungen oder Sedimentspülungen, die aber erhebliche negative Auswirkungen auf flussabwärts gelegene Gebiete haben könnten.

Beck galt als einer der einflussreichsten Gitarristen der Geschichte. Später gründete er die Jeff Beck Group und spielte mit Rod Stewart. In November 2022, annual inflation stood at 7%. On a monthly basis, price levels in Namibia increased by 0.3% in December 2022, compared to 0.5% recorded during the previous month. The main contributor to the monthly inflation rate recorded in December 2022 was food and non-alcoholic beverages. Fin24 recently reported that

world food prices hit a record high in 2022. In Namibia, the month of December recorded the highest annual food inflation rate of 12.1%, while March recorded the lowest rate of 4.7% in 2022. Local annual food inflation averaged 7.8% last year. Selected food items that recorded high inflation rates are oil and fats (20.8%), fruits (20.5%), bread and cereals (18.2%), and vegetables, including potatoes and other tubers (12%).

reported that Windhoek was ranked by the Numbeo Cost of Living Index as the 13th most expensive city in Africa last year. The city was ranked tenth and fourth in 2021 and 2020, respectively. The data released by the agency clearly indicates that Zone 2 (Windhoek) has been recording the highest inflation rates for the whole of 2022 compared to other zones. Inflation in Windhoek averaged 6.8% in 2022, compared to an average of 3.4% recorded in 2021. August and November recorded the highest inflation rates of 7.9% last year.

The zone recorded an annual inflation rate of 7.6% in December 2022. Furthermore, inflation in Zone 3 (//Kharas, Erongo, Hardap and Omaheke) averaged 5.8% in 2022, compared to 4.4% in 2021. Similarly, the month of August recorded the highest inflation rate 7.2%. Lastly, Zone 1 (Kavango East, Kavango West, Kunene, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa, and Zambezi) recorded an average inflation rate of 5.5% last year, compared to an average inflation rate of 3.3% in 2021. he buzz of 2023 awakens, our children return to school and parents are back to the grind after yet another extensive “spending season”. This is also when the harsh reality of our financial situation kicks in and one is left to manage a balancing act to reach end of January. COMPANY NEWS IN BRIEF TELKOM SURGES 11% AS IT CALLS OFF MERGER TALKS Shares of SA’s third-largest mobile operator Telkom leapt by double digits on Wednesday afternoon, after it said merger talks with data-only operator Rain had been called off. The parties had determined that “a suitable transaction is not possible at this time”, Telkom said in a brief statement, with this being determined after initial discussions, but before any due diligence. Telkom’s shares jumped as much as 11% to R35.95 on Wednesday afternoon, but they have still fallen more than 30% over the past year. Rain had maintained a merger with Telkom could create a “5G powerhouse” and also mooted other benefits, including in terms of infrastructure, while also avoiding the creation of a mobile “duopoly” in the form of Vodacom and MTN. However, Telkom’s failure to offer MTN exclusivity during their takeover talks had resulted in MTN walking away from discussions in October, prompting Telkom’s shares to crash by almost a quarter on that news. In July 2022, MTN had offered to buy Telkom in return for shares or a combination of cash and shares, while in September, Rain had essentially asked Telkom to buy it in exchange for new shares. Rain said on Wednesday that both parties had “determined that the current circumstances do not align for a mutually beneficial transaction to take place at this time”. “While the specific reasons for

this decision are confidential, both parties will keep open the possibility of re-evaluating the potential transaction in the future when -Fin24 conditions align,” it said. MATTRESS FIRM PULLS NEW YORK LISTING PLANS Steinhoff’s US unit Mattress Firm has pulled its plans to raise as much as US$100 million (R1.7 billion) in a New York listing due to volatility in the market for initial public offerings (IPOs). Steinhoff holds 50.1% of Mattress Firm, which is the largest specialty bed retailer in the US, with almost 2 400 outlets. The firm is almost twice as large as its next biggest competitor and an estimated 82% of the US population live within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of one of its stores. Mattress firm announced in January 2022 it was planning to list, with its prospectus noting that historically, mattress sales in the US closely follows GDP growth. Mattress Firm continues to actively explore all options and paths forward, including resuming the IPO process once the markets are favourable, Steinhoff said on Wednesday. According to a report by professional services firm Ernst & Young, IPO proceeds fell 61% in 2022 due to market volatility after setting records in 2021. While conditions are expected to remain muted in early 2023, there is a strong pipeline for IPOs which could see activity pick up in the second half of the year, the report said. However, this would still be conditional on a raft of factors, such as improved stock market performance, easing geopolitical

tension, lower inflation as well as an end to interest rate hikes. Steinhoff, which currently has debt of €10 billion (R183 billion), had also raised about €1 billion through Pepco’s listing on the Warsaw bourse in Poland in 2021, but the group itself may delist. The firm announced in December that it had reached a deal with its largest creditors, which could see them holding 80% of the -Fin24 company.

The standardised nominal value of transactions cleared through BankservAfrica climbed more than R150 billion to some R1.3 trillion in December.

ankservAfrica, the largest automated payments clearing house in Africa, says its index tracking activity in South Africa’s economy snapped a six-month streak of declines in December, almost recovering to a level seen in January 2022. BankservAfrica’s economic transactions index (BETI) makes use of data from the millions of transactions it processes daily, and it climbed 1.7% year-on-year to 132.1 points in the last month of the year. The report uses 2005 as a benchmark of 100 points, reflecting the standardised value of all economic transactions in the South Africa economy at seasonally adjusted real constant prices. The monthly, quarterly and annual improvements in the index all signal some improvement in the broader South African economy, BankservAfrica said, with the improvement coming despite “the ongoing, dismal economic context. “The welcomed improvement to the BETI occurred against the broader economic context that has remained fairly grim during December, with load shedding continuing, interest rates and inflation remaining at elevated levels and the global economic slowdown gaining momentum,” said independent economist Elize Kruger, who helped compile the report, in a statement.

VSS-P staff collaborate with Programming, Training, and Evaluation (PTE) staff, safety and security staff, IT staff, the Volunteer Support Specialist – Administration, and Medical staff to ensure that Volunteers are able to successfully live and work in their communities by helping to monitor Volunteer competencies such as local language acquisition and integration into Namibian communities; demonstration of responsibility for personal health, safety, and security; and exemplification of a commitment to service and resilience, which enable Volunteers to facilitate participatory development under the unique conditions of Peace Corps service in Namibia. Prior Work Experience: • Three years of related experience working in a similar environment or in relevant fields (intercultural communication, community-based development, economic empowerment, education, health, project design and management, volunteer programming, etc.). Three to five years with an organization working with volunteers is desirable. • Strong experience working closely with people from different cultures. • Strong presentation skills; willingness to contribute actively in frequent stakeholder meetings. • Significant experience as a trainer and/or in the development of training programs. • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills. • Experience in designing, implementing, and reporting on community development activities. • Must reside in Rundu • Must have a minimum of 5 years driving experience Skills and Abilities: • •Must be computer literate.
