as Volk der !Xun San im N#a JaqnaHegegebiet in Tsumkwe-West und das Volk der Ju’/hoansi San im Nyae NyaeHegegebiet in Tsumkwe-Ost müssen zusehen, wie ihre Lebensgrundlagen unter den Hufen der Herden vieler illegal agierender Viehzüchter zerstört wird. Im Namen dieser Randgemeinden gab die Sprecherin der Nyae Nyae Development Foundation, Saskia Sheehama, letzte Woche eine Pressemitteilung heraus. „Die langfristigen und potenziell extrem negativen Auswirkungen der illegalen Beweidung durch besagte Rinder und auch die illegale Einzäunung von Gebieten, auf der zum Beispiel die Teufelskralle wächst und ihr damit verbundenes Potenzial als Einkommensquelle für diese Gemeinschaften, müssen dringend angegangen werden. Das trifft in gleichen Maßen auf die Nyae Nyae als auch die N#a Jaqna zu“, schreibt sie. Sie zitiert ein Gemeindemitglied: „Unsere Zukunft und die Zukunft unserer Kinder ist ungewiss. Wir können unsere Kultur nicht mehr leben und ausüben. Reiche und politisch gut vernetzte Farmer und ihr Vieh sind in unsere Gebiete eingedrungen und haben diese besetzt. Dort befinden sich die natürlichen Ressourcen. Unsere Nahrung und unsere Heilpflanzen werden von den Rindern zerstört“, sagt er. „Wir werden immer ärmer, und infolgedessen nimmt die Kriminalität in unseren Dörfern zu. Von uns wird erwartet, dass wir uns an die Gesetze halten, aber anscheinend brauchen sich bestimmte Leute nicht an die Landesgesetze halten und berei-

chern sich an den wenigen Ressourcen, die wir noch haben“, fügte er hinzu. Die Gemeindemitglieder baten um Anonymität, da sie sich vor Vergeltungsmaßnahmen der Beschuldigten fürchten.

Langzeitiges Problem Laut der Nyae Nyae Foundation dauert das illegale Eindringen in das Hegegebiet bereits seit 15 Jahren an. Sie beruft sich auf Medienberichte aus dem Jahr 2009, in denen von der Verhaftung von Landwirten und Farmern berichtet wurde, und dem Widerstand dieser illegal handelnden Landwirte im Jahr 2017. 2015 verklagten das Hegegebiet und die traditionelle Obrigkeit der Ju’/hoansi vier Bauern vor Gericht, nachdem sie einen Grenzzaun durchtrennt hatten und mehr als tausend Rinder in das Gebiet eingeschleust hatten. Nach Interventionen des ehemaligen Polizeichefs, Generalleutnant Sebastian Ndeitunga, wurde ein Gerichtsverfahren 2016 eingeleitet, welches aber aufgrund von Verzögerungen noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Der Sprecher des Landwirtschaftsministeriums, Jona Musheko, besteht jedoch darauf, dass die Regierung die Gesetzgebung in Bezug auf das Land in Tsumkwe nicht missachten solle. Er sagte, das Ministerium habe durch eine Untersuchung bestätigt, dass 137 illegale Zäune gefunden worden waren, von denen 57 bereits mit einem Kostenaufwand von 349 407 N$ entfernt worden seien. Das Ministerium fand 19 Kilometer illegale Zäune in Kano Vlei, 11 km in Bubi Pos, 23 km in !Kadu und 105 km in #Ha-Du. Das Ministerium arbeitet mit dem kommunalen Landrat von Otjozondjupa und dem Justizministerium zusammen, um die restlichen 42 Zäune zu entfernen, so Musheko, der das Problem als sehr kompliziert bezeichnet.

Legale Probleme Die Rechtmäßigkeit eines jeden Zauns wird eingehend untersucht, sagt er. Bislang wurden 34 Personen für schuldig befunden und angewiesen, ihren illegalen Zaun auf eigene Kosten zu entfernen. Weitere fünf Zäune müssen aufgrund eines Beschlusses des Berufungsgerichts entfernt werden, während für weitere 18 Zäune ein Gerichtsbeschluss vorliegt, sagt er. Eine große Herausforderung besteht darin, die Eigentümer der Zäune ausfindig zu machen, sagt er. „Das Verfahren zum Nachweis der Illegalität eines Zauns ist weder einfach noch dauert es nur zwei Tage. Es ist ein langwieriger Prozess mit Komponenten, die nicht in die Zuständigkeit des Ministeriums fallen. Abgesehen davon genießt das Tsumkwe-Problem die höchste Aufmerksamkeit im Ministerium“, fügt er hinzu.

angeklagte Ernst Joseph Lichtenstrasser bestritt am gestrigen Montag im Obergericht, dass er den ehemaligen Direktor des Namibischen Instituts für Minenkunde (NIMT), Eckhart Mueller, je bedroht habe. Laut früherer Aussagen im Prozess soll Lichtenstrasser zu Mueller gesagt haben, dass er „mit einem Auge offen schlafen“ solle. Lichtenstrasser bestritt dies und argumentierte, dass diese Drohung in einem anonymen Brief von NIMT-Mitarbeitern gegen Mueller gerichtet war. Er bestritt auch, Kenntnis von der Herkunft des Briefes zu haben. Somit begann gestern die Fortsetzung im Lichtenstrasser-Mordprozess in diesem Jahr, nachdem zum Ende des vergangenen Jahres die Staatsanklägerin Antonia Verhoef ihr Verhör vorerst beendet hatte. Lichtenstrasser wird momentan von seinem Rechtsanwalt Albert Titus zu den Geschehnissen im April 2019 befragt. Lichtenstrasser argumentierte, dass eine Gruppe von NIMT-Mitarbeitern im Vorfeld des anonymen Schreibens aufgrund verschiedener Probleme, wie zum Beispiel die Unsicherheit, ob sie ihren Arbeitsplatz verlieren könnten, Vetternwirtschaft und der Unzufriedenheit wegen der Finanzverwaltung (Korruption) von NIMT, unruhig geworden waren. Er gab weiterhin zu verstehen, dass er nicht gegen seinen Umzug von Tsumeb nach Keetmanshoop gewesen sei, aber dass er Einwände gegen die Finanzierung seines Umzugs hatte. Vorherige Zeugen hatten ausgesagt, dass Lichtenstrasser über die Versetzung von Tsumeb in den tiefen Süden nach Keetmanshoop sehr empört gewesen war und dies ein ausschlaggebender Punkt gewesen sein soll. Lichtenstrassers Familie lebt, und deren Haus liegt in der Otavi-Gegend.

„Ich hätte den Umzug selbst bezahlen und diese Unkosten später dann von ihnen (NIMT) zurückfordern müssen, aber ich wusste, dass es ein Problem mit der Forderung geben würde“, sagte Lichtenstrasser. Er sagte dem Gericht auch, dass er nie Streit mit dem stellvertretenden NIMT-Direktor, Heimo Hellwig, hatte und dass er ein auf gegenseitigem Respekt basierendes Verhältnis zu Mueller pflegte. „Er (Mueller) war nicht leicht zufrieden zu stellen, aber ich denke, ich habe ihn mit meiner Arbeit überzeugt und ich habe ihn für seine Arbeitsetikette respektiert“, sagte Lichtenstrasser zu Oberrichter Christie Liebenberg. Er gab weiterhin während seiner Aussage an, dass er mehrere Tage ohne jeglichen Kontakt zu irgendeinem Menschen in der Wüste bei der Spitzkoppe verbracht hatte. „Aufgrund meines posttraumatischen Stresses habe ich manchmal das Bedürfnis, allein zu sein“, erklärte er. Lichtenstrasser argumentierte, dass er erst am Tag nach den NIMT-Morden über die Medien von den Morden an Mueller und Hellwig erfahren habe. Lichtenstrasser ist der erste Zeuge im Verhör der Verteidigung. Sein Rechtsanwalt erklärte Liebenberg, dass man beabsichtige, drei weitere Zeugen nach Lichtenstrassers Aussage zu laden, darunter einen Ballistikexperten aus Amerika. Titus erklärte, dass dieser Experte, William Tobin, im April nach Namibia kommen würde und aussagen werde. Der Prozess wird heute im Obergericht in Windhoek weitergeführt.

Menschliches Skelett entdeckt

menschliches Skelett wurde am Sonntag, den 15. Januar, von Mitgliedern der Nachbarschaftswache von Walvis Bay hinter dem Walvis Bayer Gefängnis entdeckt. Der Sprecher der Erongo-Polizei, Inspektor Ileni Shapumba, hat den Fund des menschlichen Skeletts bestätigt und erklärt, dass das Gebiet, in dem das menschliche Skelett entdeckt wurde, nur mit Allrad-Fahrzeugen befahren werden kann. Dies ist eine sich entwickelnde Geschichte.

uf dem 18. Fernweh-Festival in Göttingen am vergangenen Wochenende stand auch ein Vortrag über Namibia auf dem Programm. Der Berufsfotograf und Reiseveranstalter Andreas Huber begeisterte die Besucher mit seinem MultimediaVortrag ,,Traumhaftes Namibia“. Bei dem Festival wurden insgesamt 12 Vorträge gehalten und ein Fotografie-Kursus angeboten. Eine umfangreiche Fotoausstellung trug ebenfalls zu dem erzeugten Fernweh – die Sehnsucht, andere Länder zu besuchen – bei. Der Fotografie-Kursus soll den Teilnehmern dabei helfen, ihre Eindrücke besser im Bildformat festzuhalten. Der Mitbegründer dieses Festivals,

ellste Ernte namibischer Tafeltrauben hat die vom Vorjahr übertroffen. Die Ernte vor einem Jahr mit 8,5 Millionen Kartons mit jeweils 4,5 kg Gewicht war bisher die größte Produktion. Doch nun wurden stolze neun Millionen Kartons in dieser Saison geerntet und verpackt, berichtete die Internetplattform www. freshplaza.com. „In Namibia war es eine sehr gute Traubensaison, die mit etwa fünf Prozent über unserer ersten Schätzung von 8,6 Millionen Kartons lag“, wird Kobus Bothma, der Vizevorsitzende der namibischen Weinbauvereinigung zitiert. Bothma zufolge sind die Absatzmärkte in Europa einschließlich Großbritannien gut und die Preise für Namibias Tafeltrauben seien jetzt höher als im Vorjahr. Es werden rund zwei Prozent der gesamten Ernte innerhalb Namibias Grenzen verkauft. Bothma stellte auch fest, dass die logistischen Herausforderungen sich gegenüber der Vorsaison stark verbessert haben, da nun mehr Container verfügbar seien und der Hafen von Kapstadt effektiver arbeite. Namibias Tafeltrauben reifen etwas früher als die in Südafrika und anderen Ländern der südlichen Halbkugel und das bringt einen gewissen Marktvorteil. Sie sind etwas kleiner, aber dafür köstlich süß im Geschmack.

Wir wollen unserem Publikum ausgezeichnete Vorträge garantieren.“ Neben dem Namibia-Vortrag trug Thoge Berger, der mit einem Freund den Iran bereiste, seine Eindrücke unter dem Titel „Verborgene Schönheit“ vor. Der eine verbrachte seine Jugend im Iran, der andere kannte das Land nur aus den Nachrichten. Der Fotojournalist Heiko Beyer wiederum reiste ein halbes Jahr durch Neuseeland und teilte seine Erlebnisse mit den Zuschauern und –hörern. Auch der heute 41-jährige Weltenbummler Stephan Meurisch begab sich im Jahr

Polizeibericht: Vergewaltigungen durch die Väter

Windhoek (cr) • Dem Polizeibericht zufolge wurden kürzlich drei Vergewaltigungsfälle gemeldet. Die Polizei muss demnach noch zwei Männer verhaften, die in zwei verschiedenen Fällen der Vergewaltigung ihrer Töchter im Alter von fünf bzw. 14 Jahren beschuldigt worden sind. Laut des Berichts soll eine Fünfjährige am Freitag, den 13. Januar, von ihrem Stiefvater in ihrem Haus in Greenwell Matongo in der Hauptstadt, wo der Verdächtige als Freund der Mutter des Opfers wohnte, mehrmals belästigt worden sein. Der Verdächtige ist bekannt, aber noch nicht verhaftet. Im zweiten Fall wurde ein Verfahren wegen Vergewaltigung und Inzest eingeleitet, nachdem berichtet wurde, dass ein erwachsener Mann (Alter unbekannt) seine 14-jährige leibliche Tochter im Dezember 2022 auf der Farm Klipdriff in Seeis mehrfach vergewaltigt hat. Der Verdächtige ist bekannt und ebenfalls noch nicht verhaftet. Ferner wurde ein Mann in Tsumeb am Samstag verhaftet, weil er eine betrunkene Bekannte vergewaltigt haben soll. Nach Angaben der Polizei ereignete sich der Vorfall gegen 4 Uhr in einem Flussbett im Ort Nomtsoub. Es wird behauptet, dass der 27-jährige Verdächtige und das 25-jährige Opfer zusammen in einer Bar waren, als er beschloss, sie nach Hause zu begleiten, da sie sichtlich betrunken war. Er soll sie jedoch vergewaltigt haben, bevor sie den Wohnort erreichten.

Ramaphosa setzt Prioritäten

nach eigenen Angaben seit Beginn des neuen Jahres einen deutlichen Rückgang der Blutkonserven für Patienten in Krankenhäusern festgestellt. „Bei den Blutgruppen, die derzeit weniger zur Verfügung stehen, handelt es sich um die Blutgruppen O und B. Wir appellieren an alle Blutspender, im Laufe dieser Woche zu spenden, um sicherzustellen, dass Leben gerettet werden können“, so NamBTS. Um den Bedarf an Blut und Blutprodukten für die Patienten zu decken, muss das NamBTS täglich durchschnittlich 160 Blutspenden sammeln. Derzeit spendet jedoch nur ein Prozent der namibischen Bevölkerung jährlich Blut.

Die grundlegenden Spenderkriterien sind: • Muss zwischen 16 und 65 Jahre alt sein; • Mehr als 50 kg wiegen; • Medizinisch gesund sein; • Einen geschützten sexuellen Lebensstil führen.

Tipps für die Blutspende:

• Essen Sie 3-4 Stunden vor der Blutspende eine kräftige Mahlzeit. • Trinken Sie vor, während und nach der Spende viel Wasser und/oder Saft. • Halten Sie sich nach der Spende mit Sport zurück. NAMBTS bietet auf Anfrage einen kostenlosen Transport für Blutspender an. Vereinbarungen oder andere Fragen können mit Salmi unter 081 122 1265 besprochen werden. Alle Spender erhalten als Dankeschön ein zusätzliches Guthaben von 30 N$.

er Regionalrat der ||Karas-Region und der Bezirksrat von !Nami╪Nûs (Lüderitz) haben ihre Frustration über die anhaltende Wasserkatastrophe in Aus ausgedrückt. Laut der Bezirksrätin Suzan Ndjaleka ist der Wassermangel schon seit langem ein Problem, das sich in den letzten Jahren noch verschlimmert hat. Ndjaleka zufolge haben die Stadt und der Bezirk die dringende Umsetzung eines Managementplans für den Wasserbedarf gefordert, mit dem die Wasserverluste ermittelt, die Ablesung des Wasserverbrauchs ausgeglichen und die Rechnungen von NamWater aktualisiert werden sollen. Sie habe Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz (beide SPD) um Entlassung gebeten, hieß in einer Erklärung der Ministerin, die der Deutschen PresseAgentur am Montag aus dem Verteidigungsministerium vorlag. „Die monatelange mediale Fokussierung auf meine Person lässt eine sachliche Berichterstattung und Diskussion über die Soldatinnen und Soldaten, die Bundeswehr und sicherheitspolitische Weichenstellungen im Interesse der Bürgerinnen und Bürger Deutschlands kaum zu“, schreibt Lambrecht demnach. „Die wertvolle Arbeit der Soldatinnen und Soldaten und der vielen motivierten Menschen im Geschäftsbereich muss im Vordergrund stehen. Der Kritikerverband Critics Choice Association (CCA) bedachte die USProduktion am Sonntagabend (Ortszeit) in Los Angeles unter anderem mit Preisen für den besten Film, das beste Originaldrehbuch und den besten Schnitt. Außerdem wurden das Duo Dan Kwan und Daniel Scheinert für die beste Regie sowie Ke Huy Quan als bester Nebendarsteller ausgezeichnet. Für ihre Rolle als fiktive Chefdirigentin der Berliner Philharmoniker im Drama „Tár“ gewann Cate Blanchett den Preis als beste Hauptdarstellerin. Zum besten Hauptdarsteller wurde Brendan Fraser gekürt, der in „The Whale“ als stark übergewichtiger Mann mit dem Verlust einer großen Liebe kämpft. Der deutsche Antikriegsfilm „Im Westen nichts Neues“

ging hingegen wie bereits bei den Golden Globes leer aus. Das Drama von Regisseur Edward Berger läuft bei Netflix und ist auch Deutschlands Oscar-Kandidat. Den Kritikerpreis als bester nicht-englischsprachiger Film erhielt stattdessen „RRR“ aus Indien. Dessen Soundtrack wurde ebenfalls ausgezeichnet, für das Lied „Naatu Naatu“. In den Fernsehkategorien überzeugte mit ingesamt drei Trophäen vor allem „Better Call Saul“. Der Spin-off der Kultserie „Breaking Bad“ wurde als beste Dramaserie ausgezeichnet. Die Darsteller Bob Odenkirk und Giancarlo Esposito gewannen in dieser Kategorie für ihre Rollen als Saul Goodman und Gus Fring die Preise als bester Hauptdarsteller und bester Nebendarsteller. Die Trophäe für die beste Comedy-Serie ging an „Abbott Elementary“. Die Critics Choice Awards sind wichtige Kritiker-Filmpreise. den Sprache und bereiten nicht auf eine Prüfung vor. Die Mindestteilnehmerzahl für einen Lehrgang ist zehn und die Klassengebühren betragen 8 Rand pro Jahr. Liebhaberei-Lehrgänge sind z. B. Kuchenverzierung, Zubereitung von gewürzten und gesalzenen Gerichten und von Salaten, Blumenarrangements, Innendekoration, Makramee, Häkeln, Kunststickerei, Rohrflechtarbeiten, Zinnarbeiten, Holzarbeiten, Mauerarbeiten und Schweißarbeiten. Diese Lehrgänge haben das Erlangen einer Handfertigkeit zum Zweck. Es werden auch in diesem Fall keine Prüfungen vorgenommen. Ein Lehrgang erstreckt sich über 25

Dakar(dpa) • In Senegal in Westafrika sind bei einem weiteren schweren Verkehrsunfall 19 Menschen ums Leben gekommen. 24 Menschen seien verletzt worden. Vor gut einer Woche waren bei einem schweren Verkehrsunfall 42 Menschen ums Leben gekommen und mehr als 80 verletzt worden.

Nach dem Flugzeugabsturz in Nepal mit dutzenden Toten geht die Suche nach den letzten Insassen weiter. Bislang seien die Leichen von 66 der 72 Menschen an Bord gefunden und zur Identifizierung in ein Krankenhaus gebracht worden, sagte der Koordinator der Rettungsarbeiten vor Ort gestern Morgen. Anschließend würden die Leichen an die Angehörigen übergeben. Am Sonntagabend noch hatte die betroffene nepalesische Yeti Airlines den Tod von 69 Menschen bestätigt. Der Koordinator erklärte die Differenz damit, dass Teams an mehreren Orten bei dem Wrack in und um eine 300 Meter tiefe Schlucht in der Stadt Pokhara nach Leichen suchten und einige doppelt gezählt worden seien. Die Ermittlungen zu der Absturzursache dauerten an. Die Blackbox sei noch nicht gefunden worden, sagte der Koordinator. Schutz vor Unwettern • Laser können Blitze zu Blitzableitern führen Bislang waren solche Versuche gescheitert. Nun zeigen Forscher, dass Laser Blitze in eine gewünschte Richtung leiten können. in Laser kann bei einem Gewitter Blitzentladungen zu einem Blitzableiter führen. Das zeigt die Untersuchung einer internationalen Forschergruppe an einem 124 Meter hohen Telekommunikationsturm auf dem Schweizer Berg Säntis. Die Erkenntnis könnte zu einem besseren Blitzschutz für Flughäfen, Startrampen und große Infrastruktureinrichtungen führen, schreibt das Team um Aurélien Houard vom Laboratoire d’Optique Appliquée in Palaiseau bei Paris im Fachmagazin „Nature Photonics“. Laser für den Blitzschutz einzusetzen wurde bereits 1974 vorgeschlagen. Im Labor wurde die Führung von Blitzen durch Laser Ende der 1990er

Jahre nachgewiesen. Doch Versuche im Freien scheiterten 2004 im USBundesstaat New Mexico und 2011 in Singapur. Dass die Experimente am Berg Säntis erfolgreich verliefen, führen die Wissenschaftler auf die um zwei Größenordnungen höhere Laserpuls-Wiederholungsrate als bei den früheren Versuchen zurück. Der eingesetzte Laser strahlte Licht von etwa einem Mikrometer (Tausendstel Millimeter) Wellenlänge und mit einer Wiederholungsrate von 1 000 Hertz aus. Die Forscher profitierten davon, dass der Turm auf dem Säntis in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder für Messungen an Blitzen genutzt wurde. „Dieser Turm, der etwa 100 Mal im Jahr vom Blitz getroffen wird, ist mit mehreren Sensoren ausgestattet, die den Blitzstrom, elektromag-

netische Felder in verschiedenen Entfernungen, Röntgenstrahlen und Strahlungsquellen der Blitzentladungen aufzeichnen“, schreiben die Studienautoren. Sie installierten weitere Messgeräte und zwei Hochgeschwindigkeitskameras, die Blitzeinschläge mit bis zu 24 000 Bildern pro Sekunde aufzeichneten. Physikalisch gesehen passiert wahrscheinlich Folgendes: Die intensiven Laserpulse heizen die Luft stark auf, so dass viele Luftmoleküle in die kühlere Umgebung entweichen; es entsteht entlang dem Laserstrahl eine Art Kanal mit sehr geringer Luftdichte, ein sogenanntes Filament. In diesem Filament ist die Luft erheblich leitfähiger als in der Umgebung, weshalb sie Blitzableitungen erleichtert. Vergleiche mit aufgezeichneten Blitzen ohne Laser zeigen, dass der Blitz durch die Führung des Lasers sehr viel zielgenauer den Blitzableiter des Turms trifft. Diese vorläufigen Ergebnisse sollten jedoch durch weitere Versuchsreihen mit neuen Konfigurationen bestätigt werden.

Auch unabhängige Berichte stellten Scotland Yard ein verheerendes Zeugnis hinsichtlich Sexismus und Rassismus in den eigenen Reihen aus. Den Mafiajägern gelang die Festnahme in einer Privatklinik in Palermo, wo er sich behandeln lassen wollte. Messina Denaro wurde in Abwesenheit wegen etlicher Morde zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt. Er wird als Mitverantwortlicher für die tödlichen Bombenanschläge auf die Mafiajäger Giovanni Falcone und Paolo Borsellino im Jahr 1992 gesehen.

hile the domestic economy is expected to record its best growth rate since 2015 in 2022, global growth slowdown will weigh on Namibia’s performance this year, analysts say. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates the global economy to decelerate to 2.7% in 2023. According to PSG Economic Outlook, the global growth slowdown in 2023 will take some shine off the recent impressive performances of Namibia’s diamond mining and manufacturing industry and also slow down the recovery

in tourism. The robust rebound in private consumption following the 2020 lockdowns will also fade fast this year as the positive impact of reopening the economy tapers off, export earnings moderate, fiscal stimulus is curbed, and interest rates remain elevated, PSG added. The latest quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) growth figures by the Namibia Statistic Agency (NSA) indicate that the domestic economy expanded by 6.6%, 6% and 4.3% during the first, second and third quarter of 2022, respectively. PSG projects Namibia’s real GDP to grow by 3.9% in 2022, before mod-

PSG anticipates inflation to average 5.0% this year. “We expect transport price inflation to remain in double digits in first quarter of 2023 due to base effects, but to ease significantly over the re-

mainder of the year thanks to the lower global oil price,” PSG added. The ministry and energy recently announced a reduction in fuel prices. Fin24 yesterday reported that huge sanctions are looming for Russia’s diesel exports. From February 5, the European Union, the G-7 and its allies will attempt to impose a cap on the price of Russia’s fuel exports — the latest punishment for its invasion of Ukraine. That will coincide with an EU prohibition on almost all imports of Russian oil products. COMPANY NEWS IN BRIEF TENCENT FIRES MORE THAN 100 ­EMPLOYEES Chinese tech giant Tencent said Monday it had fired more than a hundred employees for violating company policies, with some referred to police and later found guilty of bribery and embezzlement. The Hong Kong-listed company is the world’s top video game maker and the owner of popular super-app WeChat but has struggled under a broad regulatory crackdown on China’s tech sector initiated in late 2020. In a statement, the firm - which in November posted its second consecutive quarterly decline in revenue - said it had found more than 100 employees guilty of violating its anti-fraud policy. More than 10 were transferred to China’s public security organ, it added, accusing them of “bribery or occupation”. “In response to the problems of corruption and fraud within the company, Tencent’s Anti-Fraud Investigation Department continued to strengthen its crackdown and investigated and dealt with a series of violations with common problems,” the firm said. “The number of cases and personnel investigated and dealt with throughout 2022 has increased compared with 2021,” it added. Those accused were found to have embezzled company funds and accepting bribes, it added, with a number referred to police and some found guilty in court. A number of those fired and accused of corruption were part of the company’s PCG arm, which oversees the its mammoth content output from news to sports and movies. But they also span Tencent’s other businesses, including cloud computing and fintech. Most notably, one employee was found guilty of “accepting bribes from non-state employees” and sentenced to three years in jail, the company said.

MTN GETS US$773 MILLION GHANA TAX BILL MTN, Africa’s largest wireless carrier, said it’s received a US$773 million back-tax bill, including penalties and interest charges, in Ghana that it plans to fight. The bill is for the period between 2014 and 2018 and implies that MTN under-declared its revenue in the country by 30%, the company said in a statement on Friday. TRANSNET REACHES SETTLEMENT WITH LIEBHERR The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and Transnet have reached a settlement agreement with Liebherr, a Swiss-based equipment manufacturing company, over the irregular awarding of two tenders for the supply of cranes to Transnet. The SIU said on Friday the agreement was reached on 31 December 2022 by the SIU, Transnet and Liebherr to set aside and review the tenders, which were awarded in 2013 and 2014. The SIU found that the decision to award the tenders was irregular. It is envisaged that the review application will be launched this year. At around the same time that the tenders were awarded, Liebherr made a US$3.2 million, or R54 million, payment to a sales agent called Accurate Investments Limited. Accurate Investments has been linked by AmaBhungane to a series of kickback schemes allegedly linked to the Gupta family. The total sum that Liebherr paid to the sales agent has been repaid to Transnet as part of the settlement, despite the SIU finding no evidence that the payments made were corrupt or fraudulent. TWITTER SUED OVER DATA LEAK Twitter was sued over an alleged data leak that may have exposed the information of more than 200 million users but which the company denied was caused by a flaw in its system. New York state resident Stephen Gerber claims his personal information was among the cache of data obtained by hackers between 2021 and 2022. He sued Friday in San Francisco federal court seeking class-action status for all those whose information was leaked. Gerber blames a defect in Twitter’s application programming interface (API) that allowed cybercriminals to obtain usernames, emails and phone numbers of users of the social media website. In January, an anonymous user on the hacker site BreachForums published a database that they claimed to contain basic information on hundreds of millions of Twitter users. Twitter said in a blog post that there was “no evidence that the data being sold online was obtained by exploiting a vulnerability of Twitter systems”. “The data is likely a collection of data already publicly available online through different sources,” the company said. Gerber claims in the complaint that Twitter “seemingly buried its head in the sand” and says the company may have tried to hide the magnitude of the leak. Twitter “to this day, has inexplicably failed to notify or contact the victims of this particular API exploitation”, Gerber said. Gerber is seeking unspecified monetary damages, likely to exceed $5 million, and court orders requiring Twitter to hire thirdparty security auditors to test and audit its systems as well as to implement and

LABOUR DEPT TO HELP INJURED WORKERS AT ASTRAL The Department of Employment and Labour said it would be helping workers injured during an incident at an Astral Foods’ poultry facility to access compensation benefits. Similar efforts would be made for the families of the two workers killed in the incident which took place last Sunday at Astral’s County Fair facility in Klipheuwel, Agter Paarl. Speaking to News24 after a visit to the facility and the families of the two deceased workers, Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi said the department would also be “looking at the company” to make sure it was complying with regulations. “We have met with the management at County Fair and we have been able to listen to what they are saying. All we could say at this stage is we have indicated there is an investigation that is already going on by our inspectors and we have been told them about the prohibition of that area where the accident happened until such time that everything has been cleared and there is no danger there.” He said the department would allow the investigation by its inspectors to take its course. “It is unfortunate that lives have been lost and we will go and pass on our condolences to the families,” he said. Astral, which is South Africa’s largest poultry producer, said on Thursday that the incident took place at 13:00 while the men were working at the waste disposal plant, “which is separate to the main plant and which does not have any septic pits”. – Fin24

A

n unprecedented chunk of the global diesel market, the workhorse fuel of the global economy, is just weeks away from being subject to aggressive sanctions. From February 5, the European Union, the G-7 and its allies will attempt to impose a cap on the price of Russia’s fuel exports – the latest punishment for its invasion of Ukraine. That will coincide with an EU prohibition on almost all imports of Russian oil products. Similar measures are already in place on the country’s crude shipments, but it is the cap and ban on refined fuels — and in particular diesel — that has some oil-market watchers concerned about the potential for price spikes. Prior to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia was Europe’s largest external supplier of the fuel and the continent has continued to buy in big volumes right up to the cutoff. As a result, the sanctions are likely to see a great rerouting of global diesel flows – aided by Russia’s new crude buyers sending fuel back to Europe. In the short-term, there’s a risk of higher prices. “The loss of Russian barrels is huge and replacing them will be a huge logistical challenge,” said Keshav Lohiya, founder of consultant Oilytics. “But the market is pricing in less panic as markets and trade flows have proven resilient. This will be a new rerouting of diesel.” The European Union will have to replace about 600 000 barrels a day of diesel imports, and Russia will need to find new buyers for those supplies, store the fuel on ships, or cut production at its refineries. Shipments into the EU from the US and India have already been on the rise as they produce more than they consume, allowing them to export their surfeit. China is also expected to send more of the fuel into its nearby markets, indirectly pushing cargoes from other suppliers toward Europe.

“Product flows from net-long regions will intensify as the continent’s embargo on Russian products takes effect February 5th, which we see compounding a tight diesel situation,” Bernstein analysts including Oswald Clint wrote in a note to clients. India’s role in supplying Europe is notable because it has become one of the biggest buyers of discounted Russian crude since the war broke out. A big increase in Indian diesel flows would all-but guarantee that Russian crude was being purchased and refined into diesel in India before being sold back to Europe. Such a trade wouldn’t breach the EU’s rules, but it highlights the inefficiency inherent in the sanctions. Essentially, hydrocarbons will be transported thousands of miles further than would normally be the case – and then back again. There’s also the potential for murkier practices, such as redocuat Standard Chartered Plc in London. “They’re trying to reinforce that there is a different model for how to develop” than relying on China. Her meetings in Senegal and South Africa will bracket a visit to Zambia, seen as a proving ground for democracy in southern Africa and for debt relief prospects among heavily indebted countries worldwide. Yellen on Friday in Senegal will deliver what the Treasury is billing as “major remarks on the US-African economic relationship.” Senegal, where she’ll meet President Macky Sall, is expected to have the fastestgrowing economy in Africa this year and is currently chair of the African Union.
