ie für den 3. April anstehende Anhörung des ,,Economic and Social Justice Trust” (ESJT), der sich mit einem Beschwerdeschreiben über die anhaltende Gas- und Ölexploration in den Kavango-Regionen seitens des kanadischen Explorationsunternehmens Reconnaissance Energy Africa (ReconAfrica) an den Minister für Umwelt, Forstwirtschaft und Tourismus gewandt hatte, genießt nun auch in einem weiteren ausführlichen Online-Bericht von National Geographic viel Aufmerksamkeit. Die beiden Berichterstatter Jeffrey Barbee und Laurel Neme haben regelmäßig kritische Berichte geschrieben, in denen sie Vorwürfe an ReconAfrica richten, die sich wie die Klageschrift des Umweltinteressenverbandes „Save Okavango’s Unique Life“ (SOUL) lesen. SOULs Bittschrift hatte im vergangenen Jahr zu der Untersuchung seitens des Ständigen Parlamentarischen Ausschusses für Natürliche Ressourcen geführt (AZ berichtete). herbe Kritik an den drei betroffenen Ministerien – Bergbau, Umwelt und Landwirtschaft – enthalten, doch Folgen blieben aus. Im Gegenteil hatte der namibische Umweltkommissar, Timoteus Mufeti, wiederholte Einwürfe von Interessenvertretern vom Tisch gefegt, als diese sich dem Antrag ReconAfricas entgegenstellten. Dieser befasste sich nicht nur mit der Verlängerung der Explorationsgenehmigung sondern auch einer Erweiterung der Anzahl vorgesehener Probe-Bohrlöcher. Mufeti erweiterte und verlängerte die Genehmigung bis ins Jahr 2025 während eines laufenden Gerichtsantrags seitens der Vertreter der betroffenen Hege- und Forstgebiete in Kavango. Der Antrag scheiterte aufgrund eines technischen Fehlers im Gericht: die Kläger hatten sich nicht zuerst an den Minister gewandt, bevor sie sich ans Gericht wandten. Die Anhörung der ESJT wird sich mit vielen alten und neuen Argumenten befassen, doch dürften diese durch Sattelitenaufnahmen gestärkt werden, die Barbee und Neme als Teil ihres Berichtes veröffentlicht haben. National Geographic (NG) vergleicht Aufnahmen des Kapinga-Kamwalye-

Hegegebiets im Juni 2022 mit denen von November 2022 und zeigt an, was die AZ wiederholt ähnlich vor Ort erlebt hat: Straßen, die ohne Genehmigung gebaut oder verbreitert wurden. „Wir wurden nicht informiert“, zitiert NG den Vorsitzenden des Hegegebietes, Thomas Muronga (von Oktober 2019 bis Februar 2023). Laut Muronga, so die NG, trennt die neue Straße von ReconAfrica den Lebensraum der bedrohten Elefanten sowie der Afrikanischen Wildhunde. Die Elefanten würden nicht mehr die Wechsel benutzen, denen sie früher gefolgt seien. Jetzt würden die Tiere

in Dörfer eindringen, die nicht darauf vorbereitet sind, und würden dabei die Äcker zerstören. Ferner werde die Straße auch die Abholzung der Wälder und das Eindringen kommerzieller Wilderer erleichtern. Nachdem der Wirtschaftsprüfer Deloitte LLP im November gekündigt hatte, hatte das Managementteam ReconAfricas im Alleingang einen Jahresbericht vorgelegt. Darin brachte es selbst seine Sorge darüber zum Ausdruck, dass ReconAfrica bald der finanzielle Atem ausgehen könnte (AZ berichtete). Dieser Tage erkannte das Rolling-Stone-Magazin Ähnliches in einem Bericht unter der Aufschrift „Wird eine Öl-Masche eine der heiligsten Stätten Afrikas zerstören?“. Es gebe Anzeichen dafür, dass der Verfall der Aktienwerte ReconAfricas auch seinem Treiben ein Ende bereiten könnte.

Einfuhrverbot auf lebendiges Geflügel, Vögel und ungekochte Geflügelprodukte aus Argentinien und Chile verhängt, weil dort die Vogelgrippe ausgebrochen ist. Das betrifft sowohl den Import nach als auch den Transit durch Namibia und gilt zudem auch für Strauße und Straußenprodukte. „Da die von der Weltorganisation für Tiergesundheit festgelegte Inkubationszeit der Krankheit 14 Tage beträgt, tritt die Aussetzung 14 Tage vor Beginn des Ereignisses in Kraft. Daher werden Sendungen mit Geflügelerzeugnissen, die am oder nach dem Datum des Beginns der Aussetzung in ihrer endgültigen Verpackung verpackt wurden, zurückgewiesen und in das Herkunftsland zurückgeschickt oder auf Kosten des Einführers vernichtet“, heißt es in einer Bekanntmachung des Landwirtschaftsministeriums. „Alle zuvor erteilten Einfuhr- oder Durchfuhrgenehmigungen werden hiermit mit sofortiger Wirkung annulliert und zurückgerufen. Gekochte Geflügelfleischerzeugnisse für gewerbliche Zwecke dürfen weiterhin im Rahmen der tierärztlichen Einfuhrgenehmigung nach Namibia eingeführt werden.“

Sima betont, dass es sich dabei weder um einen Standpunkt der Ovaherero-Kommunalbehörde (OTA) noch des Nama-Kommunalführer-Verbandes (NTLA) handelt. Sie beendet den Brief mit der Bemerkung: „Geschrieben in meiner persönlichen Eigenschaft und daher nicht die Ansichten der NTLA und OTA reflektierend, weil ich das Versteckspiel der deutschsprachigen Namibier leid bin.“ Von Wietersheim soll nicht nach gewünschter Art auf ihre Einladung zum Genozid-Gedenktag in Lüderitzbucht reagiert haben. Es sei schon immer der Wunsch der NTLA gewesen als „Nachkommen der Opfer des Völkermordes direkt mit Ihnen, den Nachfahren der Täter, die den Völkermord begangen haben, in Kontakt zu treten“. Die Nachkommen der Täter seien Erben und Nutznießer eines nicht zu rechtfertigenden Verbrechens und „haben daher eine Rolle zu spielen, die nur das Forum, das behauptet, einheitlich die deutschsprachigen Namibier zu vertreten, definieren kann“.

Verurteilter Kindesvergewaltiger legt Berufung ein Windhoek (krk/sno) • Ein Mann, der wegen zweifacher Vergewaltigung eines 13-jährigen Mädchens für schuldig befunden und daraufhin zu 15 Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt wurde, legt nun Berufung gegen das Urteil ein. Lupandu Hofeni wurde im September 2021 vom Regionalgericht in Katima Mulilo für schuldig befunden und verurteilt; und legt nun Berufung gegen das Urteil beim Obergericht in Windhoek ein. „Ein Pädophiler ist jemand, der sich sexuell zu kleinen Kindern hingezogen fühlt. Im vorliegenden Fall hatte der Beschwerdeführer [Hofeni] im Alter von 43 Jahren nicht nur einmal, sondern zweimal Geschlechtsverkehr mit einem Kind unter 14 Jahren. Es ist daher nicht weit hergeholt, dass er als Pädophiler angesehen werden kann.” Dies erklärte der Staat in seinem Schlussplädoyer als Antwort auf eine der Berufungsbegründungen von Hofeni, in der er behauptet, das Gericht habe einen Fehler begangen, indem es seine Aussage zurückwies und ihn als Pädophilen betrachtet habe. Hofeni und sein Rechtsvertreter, Niinkoti Enkali, machen weiter geltend, dass das Gericht die Widersprüche und Unwahrscheinlichkeiten in der Aussage des Antragstellers nicht berücksichtigt habe. Staatsanwalt Palmer Kumalo sagte jedoch, dass eine Aussage aufgrund einiger Fehler nicht ungültig sei. Kumalo behauptet, das Gericht habe die Zeugenaussage der Beschwerdeführerin ausgewertet und befunden, dass sie immer noch als zuverlässige Zeugin gelte. Er argumentierte auch, dass das Gericht Hofenis Glaubwürdigkeit in Frage stelle und sein angebliches Alibi daher nicht viel Gewicht habe. „Es war daher vernünftig, sich auf die Identifizierung des Beschwerdeführers durch den Antragsteller zu verlassen.” Hofeni weist in seinem Berufungsantrag auch auf fehlende DNA-Beweise hin, die ihn mit der Straftat in Verbindung bringen könnten. Kumalo räumt zwar ein, dass im Zusammenhang mit der Tat keine DNA-Proben entnommen wurden, weil Kondome verwendet wurden, argumentiert jedoch, dass dies die Feststellungen des zuständigen Gerichts nicht in Frage stelle. Hofeni behauptet, das Gericht habe ein Urteil verhängt, das ihn schockiert habe, und dass ein vernünftiges Gericht nicht dasselbe Urteil verhängt hätte. Kumalo argumentiert jedoch, dass das Urteil angemessen und nicht als Schock wahrgenommen werden könne.

NACHRICHT AUS INDIEN: NAMIBISCHE GEPARDIN WIRFT JUNGE Nach den traurigen Nachrichten zum Tod der namibischen Gepardin Sasha in Indien erreichten Namibia gestern überraschend tolle Nachrichten: Eine der verbleibenden namibischen Geparden hat im indischen Kuno-Nationalpark vier Junge zur Welt gebracht. Das teilte der dortige Minister Bhupender Yadav mit und bezeichnete es als „einen besonderen Moment in der Geschichte des Naturschutzes“. Gepardenweibchen sind etwa 90 Tage lang tragend, somit müssen sie sich in Indien fortgepflanzt haben. Hatten manche anlässlich des Todes von Sasha durch Nierenversagen noch Kritik an der Umsiedlung geäußert, ist die Geburt der Jungen ein Meilenstein, der das enorme Potenzial geeinter internationaler Projekte zum Artenerhalt zeigt.

IANs Ziel (Inventors and Innovators) ist es, lokalen Erfindern und Innovatoren eine Plattform zu bieten und ihnen die Ressourcen, das Wissen, die Anleitung und die Beratung zur Verfügung zu stellen, damit sie Ihre Erfindungen in die Tat umsetzen können.

Gutes Geschäft für Meatco • Viehproduzentenvereinigung LPO zeigt sich optimistisch

ie Livestock Producers Organization (LPO) ist optimistisch, dass Meatco in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal seit Jahren seine volle Kapazität - 80 000 Rinder schlachten kann. Durch einen Prozessablauf in der Organisation, bei der das neuseeländische Unternehmen Global Protein Logistics (GPL) Rinder von lokalen Produzenten aufkauft, Meatco zur Produktverarbeitung nutzt und dann die verarbeiteten Fleischkisten wieder ankauft, wird dies möglich. Auf diese Weise wurden die ersten zehn Frachtcontainer mit Fleisch bereits von GPL exportiert, der nächste Auftrag umfasst

digte an, dass die Fluggesellschaft das Flugzeug für die Strecke zwischen dem Eros- und Rundu-Flughafen von einer „Beechcraft 1900D“ für 18 Passagiere auf eine „Cessna F406“ für 10 Passagiere umstellen wird. Der Wechsel des Flugzeugs wird am 5. April wirksam. Die Entscheidung wurde demnach getroffen, um die Strecke für Geschäftsreisende bequemer zu machen, indem die Möglichkeit geschaffen wird, morgens nach Rundu zu fliegen und nachmittags nach Windhoek zurückzukehren. Der Flugzeugwechsel sei auch besser auf die derzeitige Passagierauslastung dieser Strecke abgestimmt und ermöglicht demnach eine langfristige Nachhaltigkeit des Angebots. „Wenn die Passagierzahlen steigen, werden wir auf ein größeres Flugzeug umsteigen, um diese Strecke weiterhin zu bedienen“, so André Compion, Geschäftsführer von Fly Namibia. Die Fluggesellschaft wird auch mehrere Flugplanänderungen auf den bestehenden Strecken der Fluggesellschaft vornehmen, darunter die Strecke zwischen dem Flughafen Eros und Ondangwa sowie Hosea Kutako International und Kapstadt International.

100 Frachtcontainer. „Die größte Priorität der LPO ist es, den laufenden Betrieb Meatcos zu ermöglichen, aber die Cashflow-Probleme des Unternehmens bleiben eine große Herausforderung”, sagte der LPO-Präsident, Thinus Pretorius, gegenüber der Schwesterzeitung der AZ, der Republikein. Demnach muss sich Meatco nicht mehr um die großen Kapitalsummen kümmern, die für den Kauf von Rindern erforderlich sind - das liegt in den Händen von GPL. Der Schritt war notwendig, nachdem Meatco nicht in der Lage war, anderweitig eine Finanzierung zu finden. „Wir erwarten, dass wir in diesem Jahr 30 000 Rinder schlachten werden, aber wir denken, dass mit Hilfe

dieser Methode sogar 80 000 Rinder geschlachtet werden können. Es gibt noch andere Interessenten, die einspringen wollen, damit wir die Schlachtkapazitäten von Meatco voll auslasten können - mit Hilfe externer Finanzierung”, sagte er. Pretorius äußerte sich nach der Management-Sitzung der LPO in der vergangenen Woche. Er sagt, dass GPL den Landwirten derzeit 65 N$ pro Kilogramm zahlt, vorbehaltlich der Fleischsortierung und anderer Exportbedingungen. Der Präsident erläuterte weiter, dass GPL bereits für die Lieferung von Rindern an Meatco registriert ist, aber es gibt derzeit auch andere Entwicklungen auf dem Markt bei lokalen Unternehmen, die diese Gelegenheit ebenfalls nutzen möchten. „Dieses Modell wurde dem Minister für staatseigene Unternehmen vor vier Jahren in Form des Handelsmodells vorgestellt. Das bedeutet, dass Meatco als Produktverarbeiter

dient und nicht so viel Geld benötigt wird, um das Vieh zu kaufen und die Vorräte für drei bis vier Monate zu transportieren”, sagt Pretorius. Zuvor bezog GPL sein Fleisch von Karan Beef aus dem Nachbarland, doch aufgrund des Ausbruchs der Maul- und Klauenseuche in Südafrika war der Zugang zu den Exportmärkten stark beeinträchtigt. Dies führte dazu, dass GPL nach Namibia umzog. Pretorius fügte hinzu, dass Beefcor seit Oktober und November letzten Jahres hervorragende Ergebnisse erzielt und sogar die Berichtszahlen von Meatco übertroffen habe. „Für die LPO sind aber alternative Märkte sehr wichtig. Wir freuen uns daher zum Beispiel auch über Schafe, die in Mariental auf dem Bauernmarkt oder dann bei Hartlief geschlachtet und nach Norwegen exportiert werden. Verkausfsrekord

Berlin (dpa) • Der Darts-Verband PDC Europe wird 2023 einen Rekord für verkaufte Tickets aufstellen. Man habe für die Events in diesem Jahr schon jetzt über 200 000 Karten und damit mehr Tickets als in der Vor-Pandemie-Zeit verkauft, sagte Verbandsboss Werner von Moltke. Die Anzahl der Tickets bezieht sich auf alle europäische Tour-Events sowie die Team-WM in Frankfurt und die EM in Dortmund.

Es werden Bundesligaund Nationalspieler aus Österreich am Start sein. Schon seit einigen Wochen halten sich der Österreicher Fabian Greifeneder vom FBV Grieskirchen aus dem Trattnachtal im Süd-Osten Österreichs und Landsfrau und Teamkollegin Elena Kalteis in Namibia fit. Zu dem Turnier, welches mit den ersten Partien am Samstag ab 8 Uhr angepfiffen wird, hatte sich zudem die Mannschaft des TSV Unterpfaffenhofen Germering ankündigt. Den Anfang macht aber erstmal die Jugend mit den Partien des Sportklub Windhoek (SKW) A gegen B. Danach kommt es dann zum Duell der ersten Mannschaften und Dauerrivalen vom SKW und dem Swakopmund Sport Club (SFC).

Die Vorrunde im Pokalkampf ist in zwei Gruppen unterteilt, wobei die erste und die zweite Liga jeweils ihren Pokalsieger ermitteln. Zudem wird die Qualifikation, bei der die beiden Gruppenersten ins Halbfinale einziehen, auf Zeit (zweimal 12 Minuten) jeder gegen jeden ausgetragen. Je sieben Mannschaften verteilt auf die zwei Gruppen pro Liga werden um die Endrunde gegeneinander antreten. In der ersten Liga treten im Pool A die erste und zweite Mannschaft des CFC, der TSV mit einer AAuswahl und das Team des SFC2 an. In Gruppe B spielen der SKW 1, der SFC 1 und der TSV 2 um den Einzug in die Finalrunde. In Liga zwei Tritt der Sportklub Windhoek mit gleich fünf Mannschaften an. Komplettiert wird die Vorrunde durch die dritten Mannschaften des CFC und des SFC. Die Finalpartien werden in drei Gewinnsätzen ausgetragen und finden am späten Nachmittag statt.

2:1-Sieg der namibischen FußballAuswahl gegen den Favoriten aus Kamerun hat das Team von Trainer Collin Benjamin beste Aussichten auf ein Weiterkommen in die nächste Runde. Der Fußball-Lehrer, der zu aktiven Zeiten als Mittelfeldspieler des Hamburger Sportvereins (HSV) und des Zweitliga Clubs 1860 München auf dem Rasen stand, kann nun schon mal mit Planungen für die K.o-Phase des Pokals der afrikanischen Nationen (AFCON) planen. Peter Shalulile vom Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. aus Suedafrika und Absalom Manyana Kamutyasha Limbondi vom hiesigen Klub United Africa Tigers hatten für die gute Ausgangslage gegen das zentralafrikanische Land gesorgt. Derzeit führen die Brave Gladiators, bei einem noch ausstehenden Spiel, mit fünf Punkten die Tabelle der Gruppe C an. Dennoch besteht die theoretische Chance, dass sich der dritte aus Burundi noch an die Spitze setzt. In jedem Fall ist das namibische Team in der Endrunde dabei. Derzeit hat Burundi durch das Unentschieden gegen die Benjamin-Auswahl einen Punkt auf dem Konto. Die beiden letzten Partien, die der Staat aus Ostafrika noch vor der Brust hat, sind eben gegen Kamerun, welches einen Zähler weniger als Namibia hat, und die Brave Warriors. In jedem Fall ist Namibia mindestens Zweiter und damit qualifiziert.

Feenkreise – die ultimative Wahrheit

H

eute erscheint unter dem Steinbock eine Gastglosse von Renrew Ztreg – klingt irgendwie böhmisch, kann aber auch vom Balkan stammen. Erstaunlich - an Landeskunde fehlt´s nich. Hier kommt er zu Wort, um anhaltende Dispute unter Wissenschaftlern und Laien sommer moi aufzufrischen: Die namibischen Feenkreise sind ein höchst erstaunliches Phänomen. Ihre Entstehung war lange Gegenstand abendfüllender, engagierter Diskussionen, allerdings von Laien. Die wildesten Spekulationen kamen auf, aber nichts Genaues wusste keiner nicht. Die gute Nachricht: Endlich befasst sich die Wissenschaft ernsthaft mit diesem wichtigen Thema. Der aktuelle Stand der sachkenntlichen Diskussion, wie er z. B. bei der namibischen Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft vorgetragen wird: 1. Ursache sind Termiten. Es ist schon erstaunlich, dass Termiten exakt kreisrunde Objekte erzeugen können. 2. Selbstorganisation der Pflanzen in der Trockenheit Je 18 - 24 Pflanzen bilden einen Feenkreis, um Wasser besser zu nutzen. Es ist schon erstaunlich, dass Pflanzen zählen können. Allerdings: Es gibt neuere Entwicklungen, die diese bisherigen Theorien infrage stellen.

Hier die Details: Schon vor einiger Zeit erkundeten ein Freund und ich während einer Safari das NamibRand-Gebiet und sahen uns natürlich auch die Feenkreise an. Auf einem Hügel hielten wir an, um die langsam untergehende Sonne zu genießen. Plötzlich gab es eine ganz merkwürdige Lichterscheinung, Staub wirbelte auf. Wir dachten zuerst an eine große Windrose. Als sich der Staub gelegt hatte, sahen wir im Mittelpunkt dieser „Windrose“ ein silberglänzendes Objekt, das wir zunächst für eine Art Fata Morgana hielten. Wir dachten: Das müssen wir uns mal genauer ansehen. Als wir näherkamen, erkannten wir: Es handelt sich um ein UFO - Unidentified

Allerdings hatte bereits in den sechziger Jahren ein uns bekannter Farmverwalter ein UFO gesichtet und konnte es nachher detailliert beschreiben: Es habe in der Luft gestanden, dann blitzartig seine Position geändert, dann wieder stillgestanden usw., mehrere Male, und sei dann gelandet und 2 Wesen seien ausgestiegen.

Im Astronauten-Anzug Da wir uns nicht klar waren, ob dieses UFO uns freundlich oder eher feindlich gesinnt war, blieben wir in sicherer Entfernung stehen. Plötzlich öffnete sich im UFO eine Tür und ein Wesen in einem Astronautenanzug kletterte heraus. Es betätigte dann einige mitgebrachte Messgeräte, augenscheinlich, um die Luft-Qualität und -Verträglichkeit zu messen. Dann stieg es wieder in das UFO und kam mit einem leichten Astronautenanzug ohne Kopfbedeckung wieder heraus. Es hatte menschenähnliche Form und Größe und sah eher wie ein Mann aus. Als er in unsere Richtung schaute, fassten wir uns ein Herz und gingen ihm entgegen, machten eine Geste der freundlichen Begrüßung, und er wiederholte diese Geste. Zu unserer großen Verwunderung hatte er ein Mikrofon vor dem Mund, das augenscheinlich eine Simultan-Übersetzung seiner Laute vornahm, und so antwortete er mit einer leicht verfremdeten Stimme und etwas abgehackt: „Ich spreche Deutsch!“ Nach einigen Begrüßungsworten fragen wir ihn, ob wir ihm ein paar Fragen stellen dürften. Er stimmte freundlich zu.

Nachfolgend das Interview: F: Was machst Du hier? A: Wir sind gelandet, um uns ein wenig die Füße zu vertreten. F: Warum sieht man so wenige von Euch in Namibia, im Gegensatz zu anderen Ländern? A: Sehr viele von uns sind unterwegs, aber wir wollen nicht immer erkannt werden. In den anderen Ländern gibt es in der Regel Wolken und wir brauchen nur unser Licht auszuschalten. Aber hier in Namibia müssen wir eine Unsichtbarkeitshülle um unsere Fahrzeuge machen, damit man uns nicht erkennt. F: Warum seid Ihr jetzt gerade hier gelandet? A: Wir wollten uns die Gebilde wieder ansehen, die Ihr Feenkreise nennt, und die wir erzeugt haben. F: Wie? Habt Ihr die gemacht? A: Wir testen ab und zu unsere Energiewaffen, und da wir keine menschlichen Ziele zerstören wollen und damit es nicht so auffällt, machen wir das in der Wüste und auch nur mit ganz geringer Energie. Durch unsere gerichteten elektromagnetischen Impulse werden die Pflanzen im Ziel vaporisiert. Gleichzeitig wird dadurch die Restfeuchtigkeit im Wüstenboden an den Rand gedrängt, und das ist auch der Grund, weswegen die Pflanzen am Rand höher wachsen als sonst in der Umgebung. Da diese Tests sehr erfolgreich sind und praktisch unentdeckt bleiben, zumindest was die Ursache betrifft, haben wir unsere Kollegen darüber informiert, und sie benutzen auch eben diese Gegend hier als Übungsgelände. F: Wie kommt es denn, dass die Wissenschaftler glauben, andere Ursachen herausgefunden zu haben?

Einschub: Als er das sagte, fiel mir ein älterer Zeitschriftenartikel ein: Im Kalten Krieg hatten ja sowohl die Amerikaner als auch die Russen im Rahmen des Wettrüstens unterirdisches Silos mit LangstreckenAtom-Raketen, die Amerikaner zum Beispiel die LGM-30 Minuteman- Interkontinentalrakete. Es kam mehrfach vor, dass die Elektronik durchbrannte und damit die Raketen nicht einsatzfähig waren. Als dann der Kalte Krieg zu Ende war und die Militärs wieder miteinander redeten, fragten die Amerikaner die Russen: Wie habt ihr das gemacht? Und die Russen antworteten: Das wollten wir Euch auch fragen ... Bei den Gesprächen fiel den Militärs auf, dass immer in zeitlichem Zusammenhang mit diesen Blockade-Aktionen Ufos gesichtet worden waren. --Wir wünschten ihm und seinen Kollegen viel Erfolg bei ihrer Arbeit, bedankten uns für das Interview und tauschten dann noch einige Höflichkeitsfloskeln aus. Er verabschiedete sich winkend, sagte noch: „Bis demnächst“, stieg in das UFO, und es hob lautlos und mit großer Geschwindigkeit ab. Wegen der in der AZ gewählten Formulierung soll hier zugleich betont werden, dass Norbert Jürgens keinerlei finanziellen Einnahmen von Gondwana oder für Touristenführungen erhalten hat. Gondwana hat ihm aber dankenswerter Weise für das BIOTA-Projekt und für SASSCAL und die Feenkreisforschung die langzeitliche Nutzung von Quadratkilometern („Observatorien“) für Wetterstatio-

die Ursache für diese Genunterschiede? Meines Erachtens macht man es sich einfach zu leicht, wenn man sagt, dass die schwarzen Streifen die Wärme bzw. das Licht absorbieren und die weißen es reflektieren. Demnach müssten ja z.B. die Grevys tagsüber auf dem Rücken liegen und den Bauch nach oben halten! Und die schwarzen Zebras (siehe Bild!) in der westlichen Etoscha sind dann wahrscheinlich ziemlich verfroren! Spaß beiseite. Es gibt noch viele weitere Theorien über die Streifen der Zebras und meines Erachtens ist das Rätsel noch nicht gelöst. Schade, dass wir die Zebras nicht fragen können. Ponsatí war am Dienstag rund fünfeinhalb Jahre nach ihrer Flucht aus Spanien erstmals in ihr Heimatland zurückgekehrt. Das Oberste Gericht hatte gegen Ponsatí einen Haftbefehl wegen Ungehorsams im Zusammenhang mit den illegalen Unabhängigkeitsreferendum vom 1. Oktober 2017 erlassen.

Im Streit um die Rentenreform in Frankreich ist Berichten zufolge ein Gespräch zwischen Regierung und Gewerkschaften in Sicht. Anfang kommender Woche will Premierministerin Élisabeth Borne Vertreter der Gewerkschaften empfangen. Laurent Berger, Chef der Gewerkschaft CFDT, sagte gestern im Sender France Info: „Ich werde hingehen, um zu erklären, warum diese Reform eine Sackgasse ist, warum die 64 Jahre abgelehnt werden.“ Man müsse verstehen, dass es eine tiefe Ablehnung der Reform und einen starken Groll gegen die Art und Weise gebe, wie die Dinge dabei gelaufen seien. Frankreichs Mitte-Regierung unter Präsident Emmanuel Macron will das Renteneintrittsalter schrittweise von 62 auf 64 Jahre anheben, um eine drohende Lücke in der Rentenkasse zu schließen. Ampel kontra Klima?

Die Friedensnobelpreisträgerin Suu Kyi wurde wegen verschiedener angeblicher Vergehen zu mehr als 30 Jahren Haft verurteilt und sitzt im Gefängnis. Das Militär geht mit brutaler Härte gegen jeden Widerstand von Bürgern und Anti-Junta-Milizen vor. JuntaChef Min Aung Hlaing hatte erklärt, eine Wahl könne nur in einem stabilen Umfeld durchgeführt werden. Ende Januar hatte die Wahlkommission der Junta ein Gesetz zur Registrierung politischer Parteien für Wahlen verabschiedet, jedoch mit extrem komplizierten und unklaren Regeln Insgesamt hätten sich bis zur gesetzten Frist 63 Parteien registriert.

Gemeinsam mit Kenia gegen den Klimawandel

• Koalition: Ergebnisse wegweisend – Verbände rügen Das Ampel-Bündnis ist erleichtert, dass der Koalitionskitt noch hält und preist die Ergebnisse seiner Marathonsitzung als zukunftsweisend. ie Beschlüsse der Ampel-Koalition zum Klimaschutz und zur Planungsbeschleunigung haben bei mehreren Verbänden und Oppositionsparteien Kritik hervorgerufen. Umweltorganisationen warfen der Koalition eine Aufweichung von Klimaschutzregeln vor. Der Sozialverband VdK und der Kinderschutzbund monierten das Fehlen einer Verständigung zur Finanzierung der geplanten Kindergrundsicherung. Scharfe Kritik an den Beschlüssen kam von der Linken und der AfD. Führende Politiker von SPD, Grünen und FDP sprachen hingegen von wegweisenden Ergebnissen. Der Koalitionsausschuss hatte mit Unterbrechungen von Sonntagabend bis Dienstagabend getagt. Die drei Koalitionsparteien einigten sich auf eine Reform des Klimaschutzgesetzes. Außerdem sollen neben Bahnstrecken auch bestimmte Autobahnprojekte, die Engpässe beheben sollen, beschleunigt werden. Die Rede ist von 144 Projekten. Mehr Geld soll

die Bahn bekommen. Dafür sollen im Zuge einer Reform der Lkw-Maut Mehreinnahmen ganz überwiegend für Investitionen für die Schiene genutzt werden. Bisher gehen Einnahmen aus der Lkw-Maut nur in den Fernstraßenbau.

Zahlung von Kompensationen Bei Eingriffen in Natur und Landschaft, etwa durch den Bau von Windrädern oder Straßen, soll nicht nur ein Flächenausgleich gelten, sondern künftig auch Geld als Kompensation gezahlt werden können. Neu gehandhabt werden sollen die Jahresmengen, die Sektoren wie Energie, Industrie, Verkehr, Gebäude, Landwirtschaft sowie Abfallwirtschaft an CO2 ausstoßen. Überschreitet ein Bereich die vereinbarte Jahresmenge, müssen die Ministerien sogenannte Sofortprogramme für mehr Klimaschutz vorlegen. An dieser Erhebung für jeden Sektor will die Koalition zwar festhalten, nachsteuern soll die Regierung künftig aber erst nach zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Zielverfehlungen - und zwar für alle Sektoren zusammen. Nabu-Präsident Jörg-Andreas Krü-

ger kritisierte, mit der Aufweichung der Sektorenziele falle die AmpelRegierung hinter das Ambitionsniveau der Vorgängerregierung zurück. Der geschäftsführende Vorstand von Greenpeace, Martin Kaiser, monierte ebenfalls, mit der Aufgabe der Verpflichtung zur Umsetzung jedes einzelnen Sektorziels werde das Klimaschutzgesetz entkernt. Wenn nun 144 zusätzliche „klimaschädliche Autobahnprojekte“ beschleunigt durchs Land asphaltiert werden sollten, werde das Klima weiter vor die Wand gefahren. Andere Experten sprechen sogar von einem Rückfall der Verkehrspolitik der 50er Jahre. Lob kam hingegen von der Allianz pro Schiene. Deren Geschäftsführer Dirk Flege begrüßte, dass die Bahn mehr Geld bekommen soll und dafür auch Mittel aus der Lkw-Maut fließen sollen. „Endlich wird der Zwang abgeschafft, die Lkw-Mauteinnahmen in Bundesfernstraßen investieren zu müssen“, sagte Flege. Ganz anders ist die Sichtweise der Ampel-Koalition. Die berichtet mehrheitlich von einem großen Modernisierungspaket, welches das Land über die nächsten Jahrzehnte verändern werde. Die Koalition bescheinigt sich ein gemeinsames Interesse, den Klimaschutz voranzubringen, die Infrastrukturprojekte auszubauen und auch die Planungs- und Genehmigungszeiten drastisch zu verkürzen.

sident William Ruto hat bei seinem Staatsbesuch in Berlin eine engere Zusammenarbeit mit Deutschland in der Klimapolitik angekündigt. Bei einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz mit Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz im Kanzleramt sagte Ruto, beim Ausbau erneuerbarer Energien auf deutsche Technologien setzen zu wollen. „Ich freue mich, dass Kenia und Deutschland ähnliche Vorstellungen haben, was die Strategie zur Bekämpfung des Klimawandels angeht“, sagte Ruto. Kenia gilt wie Deutschland als Vorreiter der Energiewende. Schon jetzt stammen mehr als drei Viertel der kenianischen Energie aus erneuerbaren Quellen. Scholz bezeichnete Kenia als „echten Klima-Champion”.

he Namibian economy expanded by 4.6% in 2022, compared to 3.5% recorded in 2021, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA). The last time Namibia recorded economic growth above 4% was in 2015 when the economy grew by 4.3%. In value terms, real gross

domestic product (GDP) was estimated at N$144.1 billion in 2022, relative to N$137.8 billion in 2021, an expansion of N$6.3 billion. Without taking inflation into account (nominal), gross domestic product was estimated at N$206.2 billion in 2022, compared to N$183.9 billion recorded 2021, an increase of N$22.3 billion.

Inflation in 2022 averaged 6.1% in 2022, compared to 3.6% in 2021. With an estimated population of about 2.6 million, GDP per capita (GDP/ population) grew by 2.7% in 2022 from 1.7% recorded in 2021. Primary industries were leading in 2022 by recording a growth of 12.9% in real value added compared to a growth of 6.4% recorded in 2021. This performance is driven by the mining and quarrying sector that recorded a growth of 45.1%, emanating from improved

diamond production, NSA said. In addition, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector under primary industries also posted a positive growth. For 2022, this sector witnessed an improved growth in real value added of 2.6% compared to 1.3% that was registered in 2021. The secondary industries rebounded from a contraction in real value added of 3.6% in 2021 to a growth of 3.3% registered in 2022. The performance is due to a recovering in manufacturing and ‘electricity

He is currently a grade 11 learner at A Shipena Secondary School, and started practicing magic about four years ago at the age of 13, when he was in grade seven. He has managed to garner 794 000 followers on Instagram, with a goal to reach one million followers before the end of the year. His journey as a magician was inspired by wanting to learn how to properly shuffle cards. As he was scrolling through YouTube, he came across individuals practicing magic and he was inspired to do the same. He then went on to fully equip himself with the necessary skills by reading books and studying what other magicians do in order to start practicing. Mwanyekange learns his magic tricks from a book

and then teaches himself. In addition, he said most of his tricks come from being eager to learn and his creative nature. He said his tricks also come from social experiments with people, as this is where the tricks are born. The magician, who specialises in street magic and face-to-face magic, said this is when he really gets to engage his audience and make an impression. “I enjoy fooling people with my magic and that is why I enjoy face-to-face or one-on-one magic as this makes a lasting impression on people.”

Challenges

Getting a large audience has proven to be a challenge, Mwanyekange said, adding that people in Namibia are not always willing to indulge what he has to share. He further bemoaned the fact that there are not enough platforms for magicians in the country. This, he said, forces him to constantly

be innovative and come up with creative ideas.

Successes

The lack of opportunities for magicians led Mwanyekange to success, as this show him creating his own platform on social media. He started a YouTube channel and Instagram account and immediately got traction on Instagram. He garnered an audience of over 200 000 followers in his first eight months of sharing content, he said. He said this has been his biggest success by far, as it is what led to his growth and also created a popularity for Namibian magicians. Mwanyekange said he sees himself as a professional magician in the next five years, adding that he aims to stick to street magic and stage magic as this will allow him more opportunities to engage his audience. He further advised aspiring magicians to go for it and create that platform that nobody is willing to create for them.

great way to change how you feel is by helping others. If you do this correctly, like the founders of the Purpose Mentorship Programme (PMP) did, you’ll start to understand that there’s more to life than you can imagine. The non-governmental organisation was founded in 2015 by a group of women who come from a background of hardship, who have not always seen bright days. The programme aims to reduce the high rate of poor academic performance by helping 30 girls each year from areas of poverty to complete their grades 11 and 12 and gain admission to tertiary institutions. The initiative aims to address the social challenges the Namibian girl child encounters while also empowering her. PMP recently held its launch at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Hotel School to officially welcome its new beneficiaries for the 2023 academic year. A total of 30 girls from six Windhoek schools attended the launch with their teachers. These schools are: Ella Du Plessis High School, Acacia High School, Khomastura High School, Augustineum Secondary School, CJ Brandt High School and Dawid Bezuidenhout High School. encouraged all participants to seize the chance because it is not one all girls have access to. Former recipients expressed their gratitude to the organisation for establishing a sisterhood that prioritises women empowerment and offers a safety net for young girls from lowincome communities.

I’m mainly looking forward to a new challenge. This is our first time in Namibia and it’s a new environment and new weather. I’m excited to see the brand of rugby they play here. We have been preparing long and hard. It is a new team, so we have been doing lots of team-building and spent lots of time together.

Valentines movie night offers refreshing break SIRKKA MUDJANIMA As the holidays draw near, many creative young minds plan on taking the festive time to create and explore their creative talents. As a result of all the studying and arduous mental labour that have gone into making sure one not only passes but thoroughly aces the final examinations, creative blockages are to be expected along the journey of exploring one’s talents. This is natural, as learners have been focused on work that has required them to use more of their analytical brain than their creative side. Creative block is the inability to come up with new ideas. It can happen while you’re working on an existing project or when you are trying to create something completely original and haven’t yet figured out what it should be about. You feel stuck

and empty, like you just don’t have any more ideas left in the creative tank. “No matter how hard you try, you just can’t come up with something fresh and new,” said one ninth grader who loves to draw but sometimes struggles as a result of creative block. If you’re like most creative people, you get some of your best creative ideas when you’re doing something else, like taking a walk or a shower. When you step away, your subconscious keeps working on the problem and will often come up with new ideas. Sometimes it takes the direct opposite of a spontaneous walk to do the trick; sometimes creating a routine and setting aside time every day of the holiday to get creative work done also does the trick since your brain then internalises this routine and it later becomes a habit to create during that time.

This year’s athletic day took place on a sunny Thursday morning filled with plenty of sportsmanship, competition and good vibes. What do you get when you combine three schools and a tonne of competition? Breathtaking entrances of fancy cars and performances by the white, blue, and orange teams, which represent our beautiful school colours. The day offered a perfect opportunity for athletes to show off their skills and prove that they had what it took. Sporting categories included discus throw, javelin, running 100 m to 1500 m, shot put, high and long jump, relay, and others. Proud tradition The learners were split into three teams, each singing songs to motivate their representatives and gain points for their group. This has been a long-standing tradition at our school, and learners were proud to take part in it. The most exciting event, however, was the closing ceremony, where all the houses came together to find out who the overall interhouse champions were. More women than men graduate from universities

Spotlight on educational ­performance of boys A majority of graduates from Namibian higher learning institutions are women, an issue that has prompted educators to investigate the causes of underperformance among young men. 

She added that at secondary levels, more boys than girls display low survival and promotion rates from one grade to another, high failure rates, and high school-leaving rates.

o discuss the issue of boys’ underperformance and under-participation in Namibian education, Unam hosted a two-day seminar to unpack the findings of a study conducted in various regions across Namibia. The academic seminar, which took place from 27 to 28 March at the Khomasdal campus in Windhoek, provided a platform for an in-depth look for the variance of performance between male and female students. Educational stakeholders from all 14 regions attended the event to share their perspectives and suggestions on how to support boys’ education within the context of gender equality and inclusive education frameworks.

She said the Namibian nation in general and education stakeholders in particular are exploring ways to support boys’ education. “Over the years, it has been observed that women and girls all over the world are discriminated against and made to experience disadvantages in all spheres of life, including education,” she acknowledged. She added however that questions should be asked as to what goals are in place to advance the academic achievements not only of girls but also of boys, “and what boys do that undermines their academic achievements.” Bohn said it is important to celebrate the academic gains of girls, but to also look at strategies to support and enhance boys’ education.

Medicos changes the game JUNIOR KAPOFI Rebbekka Taukondyo is a fifth-year Namibian medical student studying in Havana, Cuba. Taukondyo is the founder and creator of Medicos, a fun and educational medical board game for health professionals. The game is aimed at helping doctors, medical students, nurses, pharmacists or anyone eager to learn about medicine. “It is practically a simulation of real-life, day-to-day experiences faced by health professionals, as it teaches you to think fast and study while having so much fun,” Taukondyo said. She was inspired to create the game following the difficulty she faced in her first two years of studying medicine. She said students had to absorb a lot of content in a short period of time, which made the journey challenging. “Therefore, I created a flash card method, which made it so much easier, and I witnessed my grades improve drastically.”

This means that I am constantly writing proposals and media plans for corporate clients and entertainment businesses. Prioritising and having good time management skills are essential, as clashes between the two are inevitable. I must choose the most beneficial option in each moment.
