“Rain has a way of bringing out the contours of everything; it throws a coloured blanket over previously invisible things; instead of an intermittent and thus fragmented world, the steadily falling rain creates continuity of acoustic experience” - John M. Hull

CONCEPT: For a sighted individual, vision allows the capacity of capturing, perceiving and recording spaces; whereas, emotion, culture and history of the self complete the inhabitation of spaces. For a blinded individual, the absence of vision allows a greater capacity for hearing which allows them to inhabit spaces similarly through acoustics. Focusing on ability rather than inability, this residential design aims at maximizing the blind inhabitant’s ability for echolocation through the superposition of solid and void, presence and absence: moiré patterns, experienced through sound. The acoustic patterns are an instrument of continuity and mapping which allow the blind individual to inhabit their home with pride and authorship.

Echolocation + Location Voids turn to solids then to voids again with shifts in locality. Privacy and noise filtration are achieved through the densification and layering of voided walls which consist of columns spaced at multiple intervals dependent on privacy needs. Densities of the columns shift as the body positioning of the inhabitant changes which allow spatial discernment through echolocation of the changing wall densities.

Ground + Interior + Roof Upward and downward circulation suggest exterior and interior transitions whereas the voided enclosures allow echolocation to navigate through the interior. In rainy weather, the roof welcomes rainfall as an acoustic blanket that accentuates the arrangement and continuity of the interior.

CONCEPT: The Redhook waterfronts in New York saw a vast transformation from a wildlife sanctuary with waterfronts occupied by abundant native vegetation and native wildlife to a waterfront occupied by maritime industrial activity that completely devastated its natural environment. With the halt of maritime activity, demolitions led by upscale businesses has also destroyed its historical industrial identity.The goal for this project is to memorialize these histories into a contemporary aquatic center that allows human and nature to coexist together as a collective and charged ecosystem which simultaneously accepts the inevitable future of sea level rise.

Case Study Formal + Informal + Visible + Invisible: At Tainan Spring, the formal, informal, visible and invisible are deeply rooted in a site that has experienced a historic transformation. Formality relates to the idea of confinement and control within the city. Through a process of deletion, the site transforms into something that is informal. This informality is characterized by openness and freedom, signified by the remnants of what once stood. The visible is defined as the park’s physical porosity: a rejection of an enclosed structure represented by structural ruins, and the flow of visitors within the space. This porosity and movement also gives way for new penetrations, some visible and some invisible

The Curve The slopes of the curved roof prioritize access to native and migrating birds seeking refuge and shelter from the urban landscape.Controlled areas with subtle slopes allow access for locals to enjoy views of the waterfront. Enclosures below provide fish habitat for aquatic life to thrive. The entire structure will be underwater in the distant future which will continue to support aquatic life.

CONCEPT: Altgeld gardens, a CHA public housing project, has been victim to years of environmental injustice due to poor zoning laws that allowed its construction over a highly contaminated site on the South Side of Chicago, segregated from the rest of the city. Before imagining what the future of Altgeld could look like, we examined how changes in policy could affect the city, the community, and the residents. This project involves the remediation of the land surrounding Altgeld and in turn the remediation of the harm done to the community along the way.

The Backyard as Private Space Direct and protected access to the outdoors year round. Winter gardens act as a direct extension of living rooms which can be closed off during winter months or opened up completely during summer months. They offer air filtration against the surrounding polluted air.

The Frontyard as Public Space Front yards bring the community together. A Hazel Johnson Memorial Garden educates the Altgeld community on their historical fight against environmental injustices while also educating the community on the process of bioremediation. Plants are cared for by the community’s youth in partnership with other local youth programs. Ownership A community-ran greenhouse encourages self-sufficiency and community pride. shops and a cafe offer great opportunities for job training and employment.
