August 10-14, 2023 Atlanta, GA

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Welcome to Atlanta’s Georgia on My Mind Seminar! Planning for Georgia on My Mind started about five minutes after ANG announced our 2023 plans to gather with our needlepoint community and stitch with friends in Atlanta. We have a wonderful chapter and host committee that has jumped in and started working to make this seminar special for all of us. The logo that was designed by Nan Remus is gorgeous and inspirational! The Seminar Brochure this year is intended to be your starting point for everything seminar! And of course, the first thing is to check out more than forty (40) classes that are offered, through the amazing talents and inspirations of our faculty. We will have many of the events that you are familiar with at Seminar — Exhibit, Silent Auction and Buy It Now, Teacher’s Showcase, Expo, and, of course, lots of opportunities to meet up with your fellow stitchers. We will have an Exhibit in 2023, but we have made the decision to review and compile that Information in a separate brochure that will be available closer to seminar. We will continue to share all the “nuts and bolts” of seminar information, such as the hotel, tote bag, and chapter merchandise when it is available. And everything will be available on the website at: www.needlepoint.org/page/2023Seminar. Atlanta has a lot to offer for the sight seers also! We have included some references to local attractions on the website, and of course, don’t forget to visit the local needlepoint shops while you’re in! It was wonderful to get back to an in person seminar last year in Tucson, and I, along with the ANG board, are looking forward to seeing you all in Atlanta to continue the celebration of our needlework, our art and our friendships. Until then…. Georgia, Georgia, The whole day through, This old sweet song, Keeps Georgia on my mind Thanks to Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell for those beginning lines to that amazing song. See you in Atlanta, August 10-14, 2023!

ANG QUEST 2023: What Do You See? As needleworkers, stitching is never far from our thoughts. We notice a pattern in the carpet of a hotel or a sunset and think, “This would make an impressive needlepoint design.” Quest 2023 will give you the chance to create, “What do you see when you look through your window?” Now, the topic is intentionally open to your interpretation. Your window could be your imagination, or an actual pane of glass. Do you see a landscape of mountains and trees or the ocean with gentle lapping water? Or your Grandma’s bedroom? Do you see an owl watching you from high up a pine tree or your pet with her favorite toy? Maybe it’s a

butterfly landing on a flower. Let your eyes and imagination run wild with the beauty that delights your heart. Then stitch it on a counted ground to share with others. Quest pieces must be entered into the Judged Show Exhibit in the Original, Adaptation or non-judged categories. It may be stitched by either a professional or non-professional. The piece must be designated as a Quest entry. An Artist’s Statement for the piece is required, clarifying to the reader areas about the design, why you selected it, and how you decided on colors, stitches and threads and any difficulties encountered. Because this information may be

different from the Artist Statement written for your other category, you may need to supply two different artist’s statements depending on the categories you enter. The Quest Artist’s Statement will become part of the Quest Program archives. An ANG judge will evaluate the Artist’s Statement and the piece together and write a brief statement that will go to the stitcher. Creative interpretation is the key to success, more than stitching technical ability. Qualifying entries receive the judge’s brief evaluation and special Quest Certificate of Participation.

Class Listings

The following descriptions provide the information you need to select your classes: a photograph, the class description, teacher, proficiency level, and kit fee and contents. You may also view this entire brochure on the ANG website at www.needlepoint.org under “Events, ANG Seminar 2023.”

space is often limited; excessive equipment and large floor stands are discouraged. Classroom lighting is not always conducive to stitching, and students are encouraged to bring a battery-operated light and magnification.

You will receive a letter from your teacher about 30 days prior to Seminar, acknowledging that you are in their class, and listing the supplies you should bring, if any, in addition to your usual stitching supplies.

Any additional lighting brought by students must be batterypowered. ANG no longer allows the use of plug-in lights, power strips, or extension cords for lighting in the classrooms.

Most students bring to class their usual stitching supplies, including a laying tool, a pair of sharp scissors for cutting thread, a pair of scissors for cutting metal and paper, pencil/ pen for taking notes, and a frame weight or frame holder of some kind so that both hands can be free for stitching. Orchid Blast (Encore)

Lorene Salt 21016 Thursday-Friday August 10-11, 2023 I have always enjoyed Bargello – the color schemes, the interesting shapes and the creativity of position. Circles in Circles

Linda Reinmiller 21313 Sunday-Monday August 13-14, 2023 Circles in Circles is an experiment in pushing the square grid of canvas into the softness of circles. This is reminiscent pf the string art of the 1970s, for those old enough to remember. The thread choices are limited in both type and color to make the circles the stars of this design. SEMINAR REGISTRATION BROCHURE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What does the term “Encore” mean?

How will I receive Seminar Information?

An “Encore” class is one that has been previously taught at another ANG Seminar or other similar event.

Other than by this brochure, Seminar information will be available on ANG’s website and by email only.

How should I dress for Seminar?

How can I enter an Exhibit for Seminar?

Dress casually and comfortably. The Welcome Reception and the Farwell Gala are not formal, but most participants wear “elegant casual,” somewhere between formal and casual. Remember that Seminar is fragrance-free. Atlanta has bright, sunny summers, and it may be humid. During our stay, it is likely to be in the 90s during the daytime hours. Indoors, the hotel will be air conditioned; you might want to bring a sweater.

ANG will email (and place on the ANG website) the instructions for entering an exhibit at Seminar, including a list of special awards.

Where do I find the Proficiency Levels? Proficiency Levels are described at www.needlepoint.org.
