Audiovisual Media: An overview

01

Audiovisual Media: An overview Audiovisual Media is a form of electronic media that combines both a sound and a visual component to be perceived by hearing and seeing. It can include programmes, stage plays, slide shows, and processes that combine audio and video technology. Film and TV adaptations are examples of taking a visual-only piece of media and adding audio components to enhance the experience and give it a more concrete identity. The basic format is the same, although they differentiate in which of the components are given more emphasis. The definition can become skewed to some, but it should be noted that the media can only be interacted with by SIGHT and SOUND to be considered audiovisual media, anything more will fling it onto a different category. They can be deceptively simple, and require no screen whatsoever; Concerts, Church Sermons, Business Meetings, Live Talk Shows, publicspeaking presentations, etc. And plenty of audiovisual media is utilized for educational purposes as well, with many schools ranging from pre-school to universities utilizing projection equipment and public speaking presentations for sermons, gatherings, classes, etc. It has proven to be an effective tool for increasing retention of information, increasing engagement between the teacher and the learner. These also include higher participation rates and emotional engagement.

Overall, Audiovisual media is a powerful tool in the creative economy that allows people to present themselves or their ideals to a large group of individuals. It is an important tool in communication in this society, and businesses should not be coy when advertising themselves with it. It can make almost anything engaging and easier to remember than other forms of communication.

The only real disadvantages are those who aren’t as tech literate as most, and those who have no real access to that sort of technology. But the advantages, and the increase in retention among viewers, stands as a legitimate means of learning, rather than just the effects of such a mediadependent society. When you present information through an audio and visual component, you’re giving the brain two options on where to draw information from, and when you’re steadily presenting clearcut information through two channels, you’re effectively reducing the chance of distraction from any other sources of information, or just noise and points of interest. Or just staring. Yet, the ease of use is arguably the biggest advantage of audiovisual media. The overabundance of social media platforms with which you can use as a channel for your voice, and the camera on your phone with its mic can allow just about anyone to get a message out. Editing software can be accessed from your computer, and even mobile phones are making advances towards photo and video editing. Yes, indeed, it’s no wonder why audiovisual media is the most popular branch in the creative economy. .

Audiovisual Media: An overview

02

Audiovisual media has the potential to give everyone a glimpse into the lives of others. A preservation of memory that’s undoubtedly priceless. They represent an invaluable heritage that is an affirmation of our collective memory and a valuable source of knowledge since they reflect the cultural, social, and linguistic diversity of our communities. As in, they help us grow and learn more about the world we inhabit. Conserving this history is key to the education of the future generation.

AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA: IN PHILIPPINES HISTORY

A brief backtrack on how audiovisual media was introduced to the Philippines. It started in 1897 when the Spanish soldier, Carlos Naquera, brought short films with him. After their success with cinema, the Lumiere brothers’ cinematograph film camera and projectors made their way over to the Philippines thanks to the effort of the Spanish. With the projector and the cinematography camera, he showed a select group of audiences from the Philippines short, Spanish films. When the supply of short films were finally run dry, Carlos brought the camera around and began to shoot at local scenes, presenting them as brief documentaries. Thus began the Filipino love for the art formed. And music, its history in the Philippines, is far more vast than movies. Divided into four eras or traditions, namely the Ethic, Spanish, Colonial, American Colonial, and Contemporary. The majority of music revolves around so many cultural differences and influences from the west, it’s a bit of a challenge to archive it all in a single paragraph. But now that the Spanish and American rule over the Philippines was where Filipino music began to truly flourish.

Challenges of the audiovisual community

Challenges of the Audiovisual community

MISOGYNISTIC WORKPLACE

in the audiovisual business are significantly worse. Women are rarely treated with respect until they meet a condition, which might occasionally include harassment or objectification.

Challenges of the audiovisual community

04

LABOR SHORTAGE

Next is the labor shortage. Due to the many technicalities and considerations of the industry, workers need to be skilled and trained in the many technologies used. However, with more technological courses being offered, the youth are choosing other fields to pursue.

EQUIPMENT SHORTAGE Lastly, another challenge faced by the audio visual industry is equipment manufacturing, especially semiconductor chips, the main component for any electronics. Due to the pandemic, there has been a shortage in factories producing semiconductor chips. With the shortage, the demand and costs for these chips have increased which leads to the equipment needed in the audio visual industry being more challenging to purchase. It also does not help that most factories producing semiconductor chips do not have the audio visual industry in mind since it is not considered a high-priority industry.

Following the equipment shortage, some audio visual companies allow people to rent out their equipment. But due to the shortage of components required to repair any type of damage, most companies are forced to decline high-paying clients due to not having adequate equipment to offer. This is going to be a huge loss for the company since renting equipment can cost up to hundreds of dollars depending on the equipment the clients wanted to rent and for how long.

Media and the Self

05

MEDIA AND THE

The people in the audiovisual economy will always try their best to

PHYSICAL SELF look good for the audience. There are also some creators who

encourage people to love their physical self and never hate it which is a great way to use the audiovisual economy. There will be people who prefer dressing up and those who prefer the way they are in this economy but all in all, they are still beautiful, and the viewers will look up to that. This creative economy is very powerful when changing the watcher’s judgement with their physical self. In the audiovisual economy, especially in vlogs, many kinds of MATERIAL SELF products are being featured and reviewed by content creators. This has been used many times as a marketing strategy since words and pictures aren’t enough to convince the audience. Every kind of topic can be featured by the audiovisual economy, which also includes one’s sexuality. One side of this is the explicit, nude, or audiovisuals that shows the reproductive organs, which can sometimes be educational if portrayed properly. The other side is one’s sexual identity, orientation, and awareness which is very helpful and encouraging for the audience to understand.

SEXUAL SELF

Since the audiovisual media is created mostly in digital, this is very much applicable to everyone that uses technology for work, education, entertainment, and more. This will help to find a person’s interests through the digital world where everyone can share their audiovisual content.

DIGITAL SELF

The audiovisual economy provides the most effective way of

POLITICAL SELF engaging with the audience about the political status of our

country. The way that the audiovisual was presented and explained will affect the audience’s perspective.

Audiovisual media can be used in strengthening one’s spirituality.

SPIRITUAL SELF Recited prayers with photos are mostly used in churches and

seminars. This was most convenient when a pandemic happened because all spiritual gatherings aren’t allowed which resulted in the creation of live masses in social media platforms. This was their way of still connecting with their spiritual self in times of hardships.

WHAT ARE OUR ROLES AS FILIPINO CITIZENS IN THE AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA COMMUNITY?

06

Challenges of the audiovisual Recommendations community for the creative economy

07

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE CREATIVE ECONOMY Audiovisual Media has been a great help to our community. In order to help this creative economy flourish, we have to make use of all our efforts to create a recognition that will be very useful for the audiovisual community creators such as posting feedback, typing blogs, and creating content about it. We should support young creators that value the importance of giving the audience facts and entertainment that they need. Some local audiovisual creators these days make use of their platform for creating fake and easily misinterpreted information to help their content boost in the wrong way. The purpose of the audiovisual economy is to provide fun but honest media. That is why we need to look into those audiovisual creators and influencers who are passionately doing the very purpose of this creative economy, to provide the audience the hearing and visual aids that they seek. This creative economy is also very helpful for educational purposes. Since the audiovisual media uses both audio and visual features, it can serve as a tool for stimulating a student’s understanding. We could help donate money to schools to buy devices used for presenting. It is very recommended to support audiovisual learning as the new normal for education here in the Philippines because students nowadays are exposed to modern technology which means we also have to adapt the lessons by using audio and visual means of communication such as educational videos.

WHAT IS

WHAT IS ANIMATION: GUIDE TO ITS HISTORY AND MODERN USE IN DESIGN (Matt Ellis, 99 designs.com) In this article, the author provided an all-encompassing animation overview. Animation was defined as the capturing of sequential, static images—drawings or photos of inanimate objects— and playing them in rapid succession to mimic real-world motion. If you’ve ever seen a flip book, you know how it works. Outside of film and TV, animation is becoming a favorite technique of businesses in the digital space. In particular, animation enhances web/app design and digital marketing campaigns with its practical benefits just as much as its entertainment factor. Motion graphics (that is, animating elements like typography, icons, on-site images, etc.) aim to explain concepts using movement, such as animated objects in web design. While not as focused on storytelling as animated videos, motion graphics still encapsulate many of the benefits of animation, but in a different way. Placing motion graphics in the right spots on a website can actually make your site function better, to say nothing of the secondary delightful benefits: teaching the visitor how to use the site quickly, effectively and visually.

https://99designs.com/blog/video-animation/what-is-animation/

It provided the four main types of animation that designers find most useful:

what is animation?

09

TRADITIONAL ANIMATION

Each frame is created individually, and then run sequentially for the illusion of movement. This is the historical root of animation, but its cost and timecommitment are the reasons animators developed more modern methods.

2D VECTOR-BASED ANIMATION

More advanced software lends its support to traditional animation. The principle is the same, but Flash and other vector-based animation tools generate many of the individual frames based on the animators’ input.

3D ANIMATION (CGI)

A whole new way approach to animation, where computers generate all the imagery and animators input the movement and angles. CGI animation is said to be closer to puppetry and traditional animation—the animators focus more on controlling the movements and leave the visuals up to the computer.

STOP MOTION

Individual frames are captured by manipulating and photographing real objects; most commonly known as claymation, but it can be used with more than just clay, as you can see below. Although its as costly and time consuming as traditional animation, the final results often have a unique and priceless look.

Filipinos as Animators

10

Filipinos as Animators Animation has been around for sometime. There have been a few animations featured in foreign productions. Little did we know that there are many Filipinos behind the most loved animation films. As early as pre–World War II, local animation on the screen had already shown promise. The first few works were of animation being used as a support for the creation of mainstream films through the use of special effects. Later on, it was introduced in the world of advertising through its use in commercials for consumer products. Cartoonists would then venture into converting their caricatures on paper into animated shorts, many of which were renderings of the country’s folklore, like in Jose Zabala Santos’ Juan Tamad in 1955. In the ’80s, local animators would look into producing cartoon storylines skewed toward the masses. In an effort to make the relatively new art form favorable for daily viewing experiences, storylines of comic book characters were used in a television series format. The Marcos regime birthed a new era for animation, shifting the industry’s identity as a reflection and critique of the nation’s tension-filled state. Through short films, more Filipino animators took a stand toward the various prevailing political and social issues through their work. In parallel, a new wave of experimental types of animation was introduced. Quite notable are the Alcazaren brothers’ works during this era, with eight of their films using claymation to convey their visuals. (Arrah Balucating, “Why The Time Is Right For Animation in Philippine Feature Length Film”, Commoner, November 21,2020)

Filipinos as Animators

11

In essence, there has been a wide use of animation as an alternative visual art. The use of special effects to make drawings and objects is quite a challenge that requires imaginative minds to indulge in. The topics are diverse and there is no limit to where animation can be off-hand. The opportunities are around the corner but somehow there is little exposure on how to actually be a part of the animation industry. Most Filipino animators are being outsourced and find fame working behind known foreign animated films.

shorturl.at/nJUY8

Maria Paulina P. Florentino in her study, “Reanimating Philippine Cinema: For Filipinos, By Filipinos”, she concluded that “though, currently, the Philippine animation industry primarily serves as a source of subcontracted labor for foreign companies, the creation of original local content will definitely be the saving grace of the industry. Now that growth in the outsourcing field appears to be stagnating, it is high time that Filipino animators focus on creating their own content in order to re-animate the Philippine cinema. The government should provide more funding to these animators for their projects. The private sector should see the benefit of helping the animation industry and give chance to able and talented Filipino animators in order to fully develop animation as a Philippine cultural and cinematic art form, for these resemble the aspects of our everyday lives and remind us of the values that are important to us as a people. The quality of local animated content in the Philippines is undoubtedly remarkable”.

There should come a time that Filipino animators work as in Philippine projects and be known as for such and not mere people behind the scene. Filipino talents are quite rare and they deserve to be recognized in the animation world.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

What can we do?

15

In order to truly help the animation creative economy and for our advocacy to be heard, we have our own social responsibility that we can use to help. Here are gathered information for awareness.

STUDENTS

Students can play a significant role in the development of creative economies by contributing their creativity, innovation, and skills. Here are some ways in which students can contribute: Developing new ideas: Students can generate new ideas for products, services, or solutions that can be turned into viable businesses. Their fresh perspectives and innovative thinking can help to drive creativity and innovation in the economy. Participating in creative industries: Students can participate in creative industries such as arts, media, design, and technology, which are critical components of the creative economy. By developing their skills in these areas, they can contribute to the growth of these industries. Promoting entrepreneurship: Students can become entrepreneurs themselves, by starting their own businesses or ventures in creative fields. By doing so, they can create jobs, drive innovation, and contribute to economic growth. Supporting local creative communities: Students can support and participate in local creative communities, such as arts organizations, cultural institutions, and creative hubs. By doing so, they can help to foster a supportive environment for creative industries to thrive. Advocating for the importance of creativity: Students can advocate for the importance of creativity in the economy, by raising awareness about the value of creative industries and the need to support them. By doing so, they can help to build a culture that values and supports creativity and innovation.

THE ROLE OF ACTIVE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN TODAY'S WORLD AND HOW CAN IT HELP CREATIVE ECONOMIES

It can improve the progress of the creative economies in the world faster by executing the responsibilities that the society needs to do like promoting and sharing it to others. The social responsibility effect can also inspire others to become content creators because they will see that the community of this creative economy won’t bring you down; instead, the people who are active in social responsibility will support them even if they are not famous yet. The active social responsibility will have a huge impact on this creative economy because this idea needs more people and if they can comment their opinions like suggestions on how to improve the content of the creator or animator, the creative economy will also grow gradually by the help of the manpower of our society. It is possible that the progress of this creative economy will help a lot of people if the people in our society will just cooperate because once the animator or the content creator become well known in the field of social media and society, there will be opportunity to create a studio that will help to improve the progress of the content and it will help the others by hiring a people who doesn’t have job.

What can we do?

16

WHAT CAN WE DO?

THE BEST PRACTICE OF ACTIVE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY THAT CAN BE APPLIED IN THE AUDIOVISUAL AND ANIMATION ECONOMY

The best practice of active social responsibility is to become consistent on supporting the animator or the content creator by sharing it to the others with the use of different platforms in social media in order to expose them and help them to grow their career. One of the best practices that the individual can do is to watch the content and comment their opinion about the content of the video. This method will give benefits to the content creator to improve the content or the animation. It will also give knowledge to the content creators what kind of viewers they have. The people on our society can also help by supporting the collaboration of the animators. Sometimes if the collaboration becomes a huge success, the contents will also grow and it will gather more audience because of the interesting collaboration of the different content creators. This practice for supporting creative economy will inspire some of the viewers who wants to become an animator or content creator in our country. It will also teach the viewers who wants to become an animator or content creator that there is money on art.

FILIPINO VALUES, CUSTOMS AND PRACTICES THAT CAN PROMOTE THE CREATIVE ECONOMY

The values of the Filipino that can help promoting the output is that we are always positive on the things even if we don’t know what’s the exact outcome of the output. The most important value for this output is being helpful to others because it will dramatically improve the progress of the output. Being a helpful to the content creators specially for the one who just start their career, it will give them a huge help. They can assure that their career path that they take is good and it will help them to feel comfortable on their career without feeling fear of losing their jobs if the viewers or the audience who watch the content of the animator will not vanish. Some of the problems that the content creators or animators encounter is that they need to improve their skillset like attending some workshops but the fear of losing audience is the one that hold them back. If the viewers of the animators or the content creator are willingly to wait for the next content, the animator will focus on how to improve his skillset without the fear of losing the audiences or viewers. As a community who has our own different advocacies, our own different desires to be heard by another person, the animation economy in the Philippines is seeking recognition from the government. This advocacy has been fighting for many years now yet there is still little progress to it. Filipino animators create wonderful films but it is not surprising that they are working under an international company. This is the effect of not being given attention. The animation industry made a great deal of recognition to the Filipino community yet they are not advancing as much here in the Philippines. In order to help this animation economy, we can start by promoting Filipino underrated animations. There are alot of animations created by young artists being posted on youtube. By hearing what others have been pointing out in this matter, we can create a bigger recognition that can reach every platform not only on youtube.
