DON’T RELY ON CHANCE.

EXPERTS YOU CAN TRUST. A very complicated roof on a three story, 100+ year old house, plus a detached garage. They said they would get it done in three days, and I laughed. Boy was I wrong. They had an army of workers at the house at 7:30 and were working like crazy from 8am to dusk. The roof is beautiful, but most important are the fellas who run it. Matt and Nick are true professionals who want to create a sustainable and trustworthy business here in Rhode Island. Response time was quick, they were personally on the job regularly, and they did what they said they would do. Oh, the cleanup was exceptional. Matt and Nick are brothers with whom you will want to have a beer. Speaking from personal experience. - JEFF MILLER

PHYSICAL THERAPIST KRISTI MASON IS HELPING PEOPLE FEEL BETTER THAN EVER! Being a physical therapist is a rewarding endeavor. Imagine improving the quality of life of individuals experiencing pain, movement difficulties, or other physical limitations. That’s what Kristi Mason, Physical Therapist as Come As You Are Physical Therapy and Wellness, offers to her patients. WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH MCCABE

“I want to eliminate the pressure that you have to show up how you think others expect,” says Kristi. She understands that mothers often experience a lot of pressure for perfection and having everything together. She encourages people to take care of themselves, commenting, “Your pain is real and deserves to be treated. You deserve to make your health a priority. You only have one body and it deserves to be cared for.”

KRISTI’S BACKGROUND

Before becoming a physical therapist, Kristi always had a love for sports. Growing up in North Hampton NH, she loved playing soccer and knew she always wanted to work with athletes. “I also was passionate about helping others and was always craving movement. I truly love exercise and moving my body daily. It was, and still is my daily medicine,” she smiles. She resides in the Hamilton area of North Kingstown by Bissell Cove, where she has lived for 12 years along with her husband Curt and their two children, Owen (10) and Taylor (8). “We are a very active family and enjoy spending our time in nature, especially the beach in the summer and on the ski slopes in the winter. We also are a big soccer family and spend many hours on the soccer fields,” says Kristi. In her freetime, Kristi enjoys a number of interests, including running, skiing, triathlons, cycling, swimming, paddle boarding, yoga, and coaching soccer.

Kristi is an inspiration, doing what she loves and helping countless clients in the process. We are honored to feature her in our Resident Entrepreneur in this month’s issue. P

hysical therapists work with patients of all ages and with various conditions, including injuries, chronic diseases, pregnancy, postpartum, and post-surgical rehabilitation. Through a thorough evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is designed to help patients achieve their goals, whether it is to reduce pain, improve mobility, prepare for childbirth, or enhance overall physical performance. Physical therapy not only helps individuals recover from injuries but also plays a crucial role in injury prevention, promoting overall health and wellness.

ABOUT THE PRACTICE

CONCIERGE BUSINESS

Kristi opened her practice in May 2022, eager to serve the needs of the community. She comments, “I wanted to provide better care to my clients without time constraints. I treat very differently than traditional physical therapy. I treat the whole body and find the most success by taking the time to listen to my patients.” By working with clients holistically, she helps them return to pain free activity. Not only does she offer pelvic health, orthopedic, and pregnancy/postpartum services, but she is also certified in functional dry needling and bike fits.

What makes Kristi’s practice unique is that she offers concierge services in the comfort of people’s homes. New moms and clients working from home enjoy the accessibility and convenience of this innovative offering. “I also offer in-office care on Fridays in beautiful historic Wickford Village,” says Kristi.

Now Open! Accepting New Patients.

MEETING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE

Kristi, who decided on the name of her practice with the help of a friend, wanted to encourage her clients to feel comfortable and confident to come as they are.

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is your BMR plus the energy required to perform low-effort daily activities, such as eating, going to the bathroom, and sweating or shivering. Add exercise, stress, sports, chores around the house, or a physical job to the equation and your body needs even more calories, known as total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). EAT MORE TO WEIGH LESS

It seems counterintuitive, I know. But if your body thinks it’s starving, it’s going to hold onto whatever it can. That extra body fat provides insulation, protects your vital organs, and stores energy. DETERMINE YOUR METABOLIC NEEDS

We are skilled nurses, social workers and other health and medical professionals who offer levels of care based on the needs of your family member. Decreased mobility and cognitive functioning can make even the most basic task a monumental challenge. When families are spread out, it can be difficult to provide the level of care your loved one needs. “Always being there for a loved one can be challenging, especially if you do not live near by. Having a care manager involved can bring you piece of mind that they are safe and sound in the home they love.”

You can Google an equation to calculate BMR and TDEE; however this will only be an estimation. For a more exact result, you may want to consider getting an InBody done. InBody is an advanced body composition analyzer that accurately and precisely determines your percent body fat, skeletal muscle mass, total body water, BMR, and other vital measurements. Just recently, we added one at JG Fitness & Performance! While my nutrition and lifestyle coaching is anything but “calorie-centric”, this type of detailed analysis is an enormously helpful tool in coaching clients to make the best change(s) to their daily habits in order to reach their health, fitness, performance, and body composition goals. If you’re interested in learning more or booking an appointment to get your InBody done, give me a call at 401-335-0800. Stay well! Stroll Wickford

MSCUSSOC ASSOCIATIO U C O N C

CELEBRATES

ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2023 Seventy-five years ago, on August 9, 1948, thirty men and women came together to form the Cocumscussoc Association for the purpose of saving the then almost 300-year-old Smith’s Castle from demolition.

BY MARILYN T. HARRIS, SMITH’S CASTLE DOCENT PHOTOS BY MARY-E PHOTOGRAPHY

Volunteer docents of all ages are ready to share early Rhode Island history with our guests.

The individuals who came to the Castle’s rescue were well known in the community; many of them were, in fact, descendants of the original Rhode Island families. They included some of the twentieth century’s best Rhode Island historians, architects, community leaders and antiquarians. Under the leadership of the first Association President,

Mark Burnham and Caed Ankrom share a colonial tale.

Spring

is the time of new plans and beginnings.

Contact our office to help you plan for your family's future!

Let our team at McCarthy Law help you plan for your loved ones. In addition to helping establish your Estate Plan to accomplish your goals of being prepared, organized, and providing for your family, we are also here to assist with updating existing Estate Plans, discussing Elder Law Solutions including Medicaid Planning, and helping with Long Term Care Planning. Newly-Elected Association President John Dower discusses plans for celebrating our 75th anniversary with docents Catherine Delorme, Marilyn Harris, and Mark Burnham.

Norman Smith, they resolved to: acquire by purchase the property and to maintain and preserve it as a historical monument, to open it to public inspection and establish and maintain it for the public education, benefit and use of the [community] . . . . They had their work cut out for them. The house and grounds at Cocumscussoc had been continuously occupied and well maintained

as a residence until 1936, but thirteen years of neglect had caused both the house and the grounds to suffer. After raising sufficient funds to purchase the property within a year, substantial architectural work was required to not only stabilize the structure but to return the building to its earlier appearance. As soon as possible, the house was opened for public use as a meeting place for local historical groups and schools and for public events on the grounds. Subsequent association presidents and hundreds of devoted volunteers added their own visions for the use of the house and property over time. Today, over 30 docents and numerous other volunteers of all ages welcome visitors from New England, the U.S. and even some foreign countries. As our newly-elected Association President, John Dower, says: “In the coming years

the Cocumscussoc Association will continue the legacy started 75 years ago to share the considerable history of the people who lived here and the events that took place over nearly four centuries. We will maintain our recent efforts to make those stories inclusive of all who called Cocumscussoc their home, including the many enslaved people who worked the threethousand-acre agricultural operation for so many years.” Please visit our website at www.smithscastle.org to view details about the many activities we have planned during this special year. Regular tours start in May and run to mid-October. Public events include Opening Day (May 6th), Strawberry Festival (June 24th), Harvest Fest (September 23rd), and Christmas at the Castle (December 2nd & 3rd). Numerous Lectures on the Lawn and Breakfast Talks cover topics of historical interest. Monthly teas with a twist of history are scheduled for May to September. If you’ve never been to the Castle or just want to revisit us, there are many opportunities to do so. FINANCIAL FOCUS

FINANCIAL TIPS FOR BLENDED FAMILIES PROVIDED BY WICKFORD RESIDENT RONDA WARRENER, FROM EDWARD JONES

Becoming part of a blended family can certainly be rewarding. Of course, as is the case in all families, there will be challenges, one of which is financial. A blended family must deal with some specific financial issues, so it’s a good idea to become familiar with them. IN PARTICULAR, CONSIDER THESE AREAS:

Buddy’s family are John, Michelle, Madison and Mia Bucci. He’s a 2-year-old chocolate lab from Acushnet, MA. Why did you get your pet?

Michelle shares, “While my husband John and I were away one weekend, our girls, ages 12 & 14 at the time, prepared a PowerPoint presentation called, “ 10 Reasons we should get a dog “. Upon arriving home they sat us down and “wowed” us with their presentation. It wasn’t long after that we all gave in to previous requests to get another family dog.” Is there a story behind its name?

Buddy was named after John’s father’s nickname. Anything special or unusual about Buddy (talents/ quirks)?

Everything. It’s hard to put into words. What do you like best about your pet?

He loves to cuddle. Any funny stories?

When he first learned how to swim in the pool. How spoiled is your pet?

He is extremely spoiled. More so by the girls. What else should we know about Buddy and how he has enriched your home/family?

Although he adds an extra level of responsibility to our already hectic lives, and he sure does keep us on our toes with his countersurfing. One thing we can all agree on, is that he has become this family’s best friend!! 22

April 2023

• Separate or joint accounts? – Should your two family units combine all your finances or maintain separate accounts? There’s no one correct answer for everyone, because this issue has emotional and psychological components to it, as well as financial considerations. But the nature of your new, blended family might guide you to a choice that makes sense for your situation. So, for example, if you are remarrying at a later stage in life, and you and your new spouse have adult children, you might think the best move is to keep separate accounts. But if you are joining households with a spouse or partner with younger children, you may want to merge accounts to pay for household expenses and work toward your new, shared financial objectives. And it doesn’t have to be an “either-or” approach — you might decide to blend some accounts and keep others separate.

the other is more conservative? It’s important to reconcile these differences as best you can, especially if you plan on merging your finances. This means that you both may need to compromise somewhat, but you should strive to avoid having either of you feeling uncomfortable in your choices. In any case, open and honest communication is the first step in achieving a harmonious financial strategy. These aren’t the only financial considerations involved with blended families, but they should give you some things to think about — and the earlier you start thinking about them, the better. We would love to feature your pet in an upcoming issue. Send us an email: [email protected].

• Debts and credit ratings – It’s likely that you and your new spouse or partner, and perhaps even some children, will bring debts into your blended family. As these debts can affect your family’s finances in several ways, including your ability to borrow and your credit ratings, you will want to know what everyone owes, and the amount of monthly payments needed to meet these obligations. After that, you may be able to find ways to consolidate debts or find other ways to reduce or eliminate them. • Legal issues – When you establish a blended family, you may want to review, and possibly update, the beneficiary designations on your life insurance policy and retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). These designations can supersede instructions you may have left in your estate planning documents — including your last will and testament — so it’s important to ensure they reflect your current wishes. And speaking of your estate plans, you may well need to revise them, too, in consultation with your attorney. • Attitudes toward money – Attitudes toward money — yours and those of your new spouse or partner — should be addressed when starting a blended family. Artwork and photos are what first come to mind when people think of custom framing. “In addition,” Jan says, “We’ve framed everything from children’s artwork to beach stones that hold emotions for people to vintage keys.” They also have framed jewelry, collections such as collections of arrowheads, collections of campaign buttons, and vintage textiles, including baptismal gowns. “We frame a lot of sports jerseys,” adds Jan. Finishing Touches Picture Framing is the Preferred Picture Framer for URI Athletics and the Ryan Center.

PRESERVE YOUR COLLECTIBLES, MEMORABILIA, AND MORE WITH FINISHING TOUCHES PICTURE FRAMING! A Rhode Island resident since her teenage days, Jan Bertwell has always had a strong interest in needlework, studying textiles, clothing, and related subjects at URI. While in college, she worked in a needlework shop. Once the customers finished stitching their projects, she took it from there and created products such as pillows and other soft furnishings using their lovely work. WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH MCCABE PHOTOS BY HOLLY WALSH PHOTOGRAPHY

During her college years in the mid‘70s, Jan started her own business, Finishing Touches, since she was putting the “finishing touches” on her customers’ work. Her business grew since its inception, expanding with contacts in needlework shops all over New England and eventually from Maine to Florida. The business evolved from needlework finishing when her husband purchased an existing 24

April 2023

picture framing business, and they combined the two. The framing side grew in popularity because anything can be framed, not just needlework. Going from a home-based business to a retail framing business in the ‘80s helped them to accommodate more clients. She and her husband leased a store near their home so they could still be there for their two sons. Although Jan’s husband passed away in 2009, with the support

of her sons, Evan and Dan, she decided to continue to press on with the business. Jan joined BNI and learned the value of networking. The members of the group encouraged Jan and Evan to get a location that was more visible and accessible. With many of their clients from Wakefield, Charlestown, and North Kingstown, it made sense to have a location closer to those towns. They moved onto Main Street in Wakefield in November

Evan, Jan, and their staff excel in customer service, which is their focus. If they don’t know the answer to a customer’s question, they will do the research and get back to them. For questions concerning paper conservation and textile conservation, Jan and Evan direct clients to the right people for the project. PRINTING AND FRAMING PHOTOS

For those who have photos on their phones, they can be printed and framed in-house at Finishing Touches. Jan says, “Several years ago, we bought a nice printer for the store to print photos, and it has worked out well. We’ll print the photos in the desired size, and then we’ll help to choose matting and framing all in one visit.” Framed photos are great for holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. When working with a customer to design framing, Jan, Evan, and their team ask questions about where it will hang. What is the style of the room? What are the colors in the room? Will this coordinate with the existing frames or stand on its own? During the conversation, they get a sense of the recipient’s style and what they envision for the piece. Then they work together with the customer to choose matting colors, framing style, and the appropriate glass. Finishing Touches only works with conservation materials that will stand the test of time. TIPS

Jan has some tips for residents. “Never leave

artwork in your car,” she says. “The temperature changes in your car can be damaging to artwork.” When hanging something on the wall, always use the hanger that Finishing Touches supplies. Another tip is to avoid hanging art in direct sunlight. Also, consider how you are cleaning the artwork. Jan says, “When cleaning the frame, just lightly dust it or use a microfiber cloth. When cleaning the glass, gently buff it with a microfiber cloth. If more cleaning is necessary, use a glass cleaner that doesn’t have ammonia. And never spray directly on the glass. The cleaner can seep under the glass and damage the artwork. Always spray the cloth and gently wipe the glass.” Following these tips will help you protect your work for years to come. Preserve your memories with Finishing Touches Picture Framing. You’ll be glad that you did! Perhaps one of the oldest homes in the village, The John Updike House, an elegant old dame of a house, refuses to tell her age!

Once again this June, HistWick will host its biennial walking tour throughout the village! Wickford in Bloom, Historic Home and Garden Tour will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 24th and 25th. Many of Wickford’s households will graciously open either their home or garden for your viewing pleasure. Leading up to the event, Stroll Wickford is pleased to showcase a sampling of those properties to whet your appetites! So dust off your sun hats and get those walking shoes out of the closet to enjoy what will surely be a unique event! JOHN UPDIKE HOUSE C 1745

Perhaps one of the oldest homes in the village, The John Updike House, an elegant old dame of a house, refuses to tell her age! The date of 1745 is widely believed to be when her original foundations were laid, but the truth is, no one really knows the exact date! She stands along Pleasant Street in the oldest part of the village looking out over the waters of Fishing Cove towards Sauga Point. Once part of an estate including a wharf, warehouses and several outbuildings, Updike House served as the homeport of many a seafarer or merchant and existed as an important hub for Rhode Island’s early shipping industry. In 1920 Alonzo Cross, president and founder of Cross Pen & Pencil, purchased the house. Having fallen into disrepair over the long years, the house was meticulously restored by renowned architect Norman Isham. Isham not only oversaw restoration and remodeling but also the relocation of the house. It was moved back from the street 40 feet as Mrs. Cross wanted to have a front yard, which was the style at that time. Originally built in the fashion of the grandest Newport estates of the time, Updike House has been lovingly restored to its former beauty. Current owners of the Updike House are Ellen Cullom and Chris Scofield. Stroll Wickford

Jennifer Shaker, Director of the Willett Free Library in Saunderstown, is a strong supporter of the idea that art is an expression of our thoughts, feelings and experiences that serves as an avenue for creativity and often inspires self-reflection or social change.* She also finds it meaningful that the Willett Free Library was founded by neighborhood members in 1885 with the mission of ‘a circle for mutual improvement,’ providing a haven where people could come together to pursue similar interests and to participate in lifelong learning. A librarian at heart since her youth, Jennifer enjoyed collecting as many books as possible, drawing ‘due date’ slips in the back and checking them out to her sisters. She was inspired by her grandmother who frequently brought her to the library and was always reading a book. Could this be at the heart of her desire to become a librarian? 28

April 2023

If you have never visited the Willett Free Library, you might want to explore this welcoming and inspiring jewel that is so close to home. Upon entering you will see all sorts of books and be awed by the organizers’ creativity in finding space for what seems like an unlimited treat of reading material. You are also likely to enjoy the active, but peaceful, environment that sparks a warm welcome and seems to inspire creativity. Because the library staff at Willett believe that art is not just for painters, you will find a variety of art forms brought to life in this tiny building. You will also likely feel welcomed by kindred spirits who wish to join you in a pursuit of expressing creative thoughts that make us problem solvers and truly human. What sort of art forms will I find, you might ask? One day you may discover authors discussing

their writing, at another time you may experience music lessons or performances. Still other days might offer a kaffeeklatch for conversation around books or other issues, or a group of people knitting while bonding in the joy of completing a project you thought you could never do. Participating in a painting exploration class or a discussion of artwork created by artists of Wickford Art Association could be another option. The Willet Library is truly one of the joys of Rhode Island… and it’s right here in our backyard! Belgian & French Design, Dare to be Noticed!

Open year round

NOW HIRING ALL POSITIONS

Stroll Wickford guests were recently treated to a selection of plantbased deliciousness at the “Evening of Inspired Health” event in Providence, at the Biomed Center of New England. What a feast! WRITTEN BY MICHELLE GIRASOLE, RESIDENT PHOTO BY HOLLY WALSH PHOTOGRAPHY

M

eet Julie and Dean, founders of SoCo Vedge, a weekly vegan meal delivery service, based in Narragansett. Now, wait, before you turn the page, saying “vegan isn’t for me”, trust me - take a look at these photos and give this your full attention! I was instantly hooked by the bright colors and plated items that looked like meatballs, crab cakes and pulled pork. Their spread captured my eye’s interest, and my mind’s curiosity could these vegan morsels taste as good as they looked? I will tell you, I could not wait to try them all and instantly fell in love! SoCo Vedge’s motto, “Eat Locally, Taste Globally” speaks to Dean’s background and talent as a chef, combined with the couple’s passion for worldwide travel. They were about to venture out on a trip to their 47th country (Mexico), and no doubt, they will be bringing back the freshest of culinary delights for their customers to sample. Taking the best fare the world has to offer and bringing it to our

doorsteps here in South County is what they are all about. As more and more people shift their eating habits to adjust for food sensitivities and lifestyle preferences, there are certain foodstuffs that many folks “used to love”, but they have to give up. The genius of Dean and Julie’s menu is that they are “masters of food disguise” - they have transformed food you wouldn’t consider vegan into tasty little bites of goodness. For example, the Mojo Pulled “Pork” was made of jackfruit - similar in appearance and texture, served on a plantain tostone with cumin drizzle. So full of flavor and nutrients, and you get the feeling you just indulged. Whipping beets into a lovely hummus, to serve with carrots, celery and pita wedges is another way to add fun color, but also healthy nutrition and flavor to any menu. Dean included this in a trio of dips, with traditional garlic hummus as well as a bright green edamame dip. Ricotta

Bruschetta and Southwest Quinoa Salad rounded out the menu and proved very popular with the guests. Even desserts took on a new “plant slant” - Raspberry Rose “Cheesecake” Bites and Belgian Chocolate Mousse Cups delivered a rich, sweet ending to the meal, leaving every palette satisfied. By now, you must be wondering how you can try the magic of SoCo Vedge. Venture onto their website for easy online ordering, with pickup or delivery options. Julie takes on customer-facing business tasks and serves up their social media with a smile. A quick peek at their Instagram and you are whirled around the world - Morroco, Japan, Korea, Italy, Greece and more. Personally, I can’t wait to see (and taste!) what Dean and Julie will come up with next.

MEET JULIE AND DEAN FOUNDERS OF SOCO VEDGE
