THE COMMODORE’S CORNER It was late October 2018 and I had just pur-

chased a brand new trawler I had been dreaming about my entire life. Since this was now reality and no longer a dream, she would come to be known as “Knot Dreaming.” She would be delivered to me in March 2019 and I had to find a place to put her. I checked Ft. Myers Yacht Basin, Edison Ford Marina, Legacy Harbor and many other marinas. All had 1 year waiting periods for slips. Continuing my search for where to dock my boat, I went to the Fort Myers Boat show in November and came across a booth for St. Charles Yacht Club. I stopped and chatted. I had lived in SWFL for 29 years at that point and never heard of Iona or St. Charles Yacht Club. I learned that the Club not only had slips, they had slips for sale! A visit to the Club the next day for a tour and a Lunch and I was all in. I joined December 2018, bought a slip and jumped in with both feet. I could not wait to be a part of this fabulous Club. I joined the Board as a Director in 2020 and have ascended the Bridge to this Honorary Spot as Commodore. I love St. Charles and refer to it as “my happy place.” I wanted to serve on the Board because I want to give back to the place and people I love so much. That is the history of my membership in a nutshell.

and still work, defending insurance companies from general liability claims. My only personal concern in the coming year will be how I balance working full time with being your Commodore, but I promise I will work tirelessly in the coming year to make it work. The 2023-2024 Board has already had one organizational meeting and an orientation. The Board is made up of new and long-term members, which I think is a great cross representation of where we are with club membership. When I joined in December 2018 there were 164 members. Today, we have 216. Our Board meetings will be the third Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. The first Board Meeting will be April 15th. I will hold a “Get Acquainted with the Commodore” coffee on April 22nd at 10:30a.m. which will be open to both club members and neighborhood residents. Please come and let’s get to know one another. I look forward to serving as your Commodore and if there is anything I can ever do to improve your membership experience, please let me know. I want St. Charles to be your happy place too!

On the personal side, I am originally from Raleigh, NC and have now lived in SWFL for 34 years. I lived in Naples for 26 years before meeting the love of my life, Eileen, and we bought a house together in Fort Myers in 2015. I am a Florida Bar Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer

Your GM! March was another record-breaking month for

us. The Poker Run and Fleet Review were exceptionally well attended. The results from the survey were beneficial. Because of your input, we have made some immediate changes. • We are researching a better way to store name tags. • We have set up a “Meet the Commodore” event this month. • An email explaining our Yacht Club Traditions was sent out and Silver Stars will continue to help with the language to be used on the website explaining our yearly planned yachting events. • Our French Fries have been changed/upgraded. • We have added chairs to the outside patio to fit more members on Thursday nights. • A No See Um extermination device was installed two weeks ago so that you can enjoy the Courtyard and Patio in comfort. • The board has been alerted to your interest in Pickleball. • We will be starting a Summer cornhole league in June. • An expanded Ala Carte section has been added to our menu. Some members had mentioned that when they don’t want to cook, they just come to the club. The feeling is that they don’t want to shell out forty dollars every time they come

for dinner (they don’t necessarily want a burger or wings). Because of this, I have added three entrees in the $18 to $20 dollar range. • We have added a “Simple Steak” for finicky meat eaters. • We will always have a pasta and vegetarian option on the menu. Your input is invaluable. Please feel free to contact me at any time. We improve with your insight. I am continuing to reach out to those of you that made suggestions. We have had some unique challenges post-Covid and Hurricane Ian. There are currently 1.5 million open food and beverage jobs in the country. This season has been a struggle at times with staffing. I believe we have a very strong core staff and as of February, we have a strong, complete kitchen staff. I appreciate your patience when we have fallen short. I have a few agencies helping us with recruiting. Our base pay has increased significantly, and I believe we have a great work culture in place. Part of that work culture is our members and I thank you for being so kind to our employees.

FCYC REPORT FOR SCYC

DOCK COMMITTEE INFORMATION

FCYC Change of Watch meeting was held on March 11 at Eau Gallie YC in Melbourne, FL. 32 of 37 clubs were represented.

March 15th - Post-Ian Waterways Debris & Submerged Hazards Safety comments from Cpt Jody Cook of SeaTow of Ft. Myers:

Brightline railroad bridge construction in Stuart will halt all East-West boat traffic on the Okeechobee Waterway for the first three weeks of May.

1. He recommends staying away from the back bay of Fort Myers Beach as they are still finding submerged items under the water. He was told of 4 local boaters who have boated around the island with no issues at all. Cook felt that they were just lucky that they made it through without damage. Use your own discretion!

Interclub Competition - this fall the FCYC will be hosting the Second Annual FCYC Inter-Club Competition. Tennis will be played at Tampa Yacht Club November 4 & 5. Pickleball at Bradenton YC on November 4 & 5. Bocce Ball at Isles YC on November 3. Golf will be at Harbor Ridge Golf and Yacht club over in the Stuart area. Given our robust Bocce Ball participation, I would hope we can field a couple of teams. Reciprocity documents were distributed. Fortunately, we at St. Charles enjoy a reputation of being welcoming and accommodating. Unfortunately a few clubs don’t play so well with others, and some of our members have been surprised when attending another council club. Hopefully those events will not recur.

2. Pine Island Sound has channel markers missing so caution is advised. 3. Matlacha Pass is terrible with many channel markers missing. Definitely stay away. 4. The intracoastal has a few markers still missing but is very navigable. The farther north you go the better it gets. 5. Off shore in the Gulf is good. 6. Getting fuel can still be an issue so please keep this in mind.

Our next FCYC meeting will be done virtually on May 13. Everyone is invited. If you’re interested in watching, I can provide you with a Zoom link.

Captain Dan, owner of SeaTow of Naples encouragingly says:

Respectfully submitted, Carl Schultz, P/C Director of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs Chair of the FCYC Communications Committee

2. Marco Pass and Capri Pass are open. Stick close to the red channel markers because there is some shoaling on Marco Pass.

1. Gordon Pass is open from the Gulf to Tin City. No issues.

3. Wiggins pass is open. 4. Fuel is available at several marinas. Probably the easiest to use is Hamilton Harbor. 5. Many restaurants with docking in Marco and Naples are open. Conditions on the waterways can change frequently so please use your own discretion when charting your trip.

SCYC Kayaking

The regular Wednesday morning kayaking paddles began in February and we’ve had lots of fun on the water, exploring local creeks and visiting with some friendly manatees. We head out from the SCYC kayak launch at 9 am and all are welcome! Bring your own boat or use one of the Club’s five single kayaks or two doubles. Paddling routes include trips through the creeks at St. Charles Harbour, visits to the Shell Point lagoon to see the manatees, and paddles to creeks up and down the river, depending on wind and tides. Also back are our monthly Sunday Kayak & Brunch paddles! We’re going out on the third Sunday of each month through June: April 16, May 21, and June 18. Join us for a late morning paddle, followed by brunch on the patio.

Al & Sally Hanser moved to Sanibel some 25 years ago from Minneapolis where they raised their family, 3 daughters and a son, Elise, Laura, Wendy and Albert. Al graduated from Brown University and The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and had been in the investment business for 64 years. Following retirement as Chairman/CEO of Resource Bank and Trust in Minneapolis they moved to Sanibel. Shortly thereafter he flunked retirement and started the Sanibel Captiva Trust Company which has grown to the largest private Trust Company in Florida owning Trust Companies in Tampa, Naples and other related locations. He remains active and as Chairman/CEO of the upstream holding company. The Hanser family have been owners of the St. Louis Cardinals for 65 years. Al 24

was born in St. Louis. Over the years he has been active on many public, private and philanthropic boards. Sally is a graduate of Simmons College in Boston and, in addition to being a mother, has had several businesses and continues to pursue her love of art and clay. Over the years she has been a volunteer in Hospice, grief counseling as well as her involvement in many philanthropic endeavors. She has also published an award-winning children’s book. Recently, Sally and Al celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Club memberships in Florida include, The Sanctuary, Captiva Island Yacht Club and Riomar Country Club in Vero Beach.

St. Charles Yacht Club

Prospective Members: Joe & Sheri Harris

Joe is from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was a Police Officer and then worked in construction and sales. Originally from Long Island, Sheri lived in New Jersey for over 30 years where she was Corporate Director for a Health and Wellness company. Joe and Sheri love the water and sunshine, so it was a natural progression when they came to Fort Myers on vacation 5 years ago and never left! They did not know anyone here but that did not last long! So far, 3 of their 6 children have joined them here (they’re working on the rest)! They also have one grandson up in PA.

They are currently real estate agents because they love it here and have helped many of their friends to join us here in paradise! Joe and Sheri just finished renovating their Cape Coral home after the hurricane. They love to boat, travel, ride motorcycles and entertain. They have a (new to them) 38’ Carver Santego and are excited to explore, make friends and meet people with similar interests.

Dennis & Lois Hogerheide are hoping to become members of St. Charles Yacht Club again. They were members for several years participating in many events. They especially enjoyed the boating activities. After selling their last boat they traveled in their motorhome visiting many states learning the history, seeing national parks and scenery. They always managed to spend three or four months in northern Michigan in the summer. Golfing is a passion for both of them. Now they golf here in Fort Myers and summer in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Prospective Members: Ravi & Abigail Ramcharan

Ravi: I was born in Trinidad and Tobago but I grew up in SWFL. I played Baseball most of my life, until I went to College at The University of Florida, for Mechanical Engineering. I started working at Youngquist Brothers in 2013 as a Mechanical Engineer, which is where I still work today. My wife Abigail and I built a house ourselves in South Fort Myers back in 2020 and live there currently. I enjoy boating, fishing, spearfishing, and anything mechanical. We have no former club involvement, although we have been around the neighborhood and guests at the St. Charles Yacht Club for the past 10 years. We have made friends with many of the neighbors and club members, so we are excited to officially become a part of the Club!

Abigail: I’m a local! Born and raised on Pine Island in St. James City. I lived in Orlando for nearly 8 years before moving back to Ft. Myers in 2014. I’m an IT Recruiter and have worked in Sales/Recruiting for 9 years now. Growing up on the Island curated my love for any and all water-related activities, primarily fishing and shelling and recently got into free diving last year. My husband and I have been guests of current St. Charles Yacht Club members several times and have always had a good time. We’ve made some dear friends at the club and are looking forward to future memories as members!

New Member: Ada Shissler

I am a native of central Illinois and a graduate of the University of Illinois where I was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. I became a realtor and owner, broker, and manager of Charter Oak Realty at Oak Run for 17 years before moving to Sanibel where I joined VIP and spent another 17 years in real estate. On Sanibel, I was active in the Captiva Island Yacht Club where I served as Commodore in 2013-2014 and did extensive cruising - visiting many of the clubs in the Florida Council. We also kept a 42’ Morgan sailboat at the Naples City Dock and enjoyed sailing as well as cruising.

I founded and was President of Sanibel Beautification for 11 years, raising funds and organizing volunteers to plant native vegetation on Sanibel, joining with the Chamber of Commerce, City of Sanibel, and SCCF to form the Periwinkle Partnership devoted to hurricane recovery after Charlie. I have 2 children, 5 grandchildren, and will have 5 great grandchildren by the end of the year. They are all in Dallas, Denver, and Bozeman, so all my travel these days points west.

Commodore’s Cruise 2023! The 2023 Commodore’s Cruise will take place September 2023 and the destination has been set..drum roll please…it’s the Greek Isles! We will be leaving Athens on 9/17/23, traveling to Santorini, Rhodes, Bodrum and Mykonos before returning to Athens 9/24/23. Now is the time to book this cruise! We will be cruising on the new Virgin Voyages “Resilient Lady.” With Richard Branson at the helm of this company, the Virgin Voyages fleet are Adult-by-Design, offering a sanctuary at sea for the discern-ing traveler. The goal is to create a unique cruising experience, with well-being at the forefront of the onboard experience. St. Charles cruisers will enjoy high-end modern cabins with luxury super yacht detailing, concierge butler service and access to restricted VIP areas on the ship and private beach club. There are no buffets or giant dining rooms—this is a cruise for foodies with over 20 unique restau-rants to choose from, all focused on a unique culinary experience. September is arguably the best month to visit the Greek islands- temperatures are still hot, the sea is warm and the summer crowds have disappeared. Many fun events are in the planning stages just for our St. Charles cruisers. The goal is to create a mix of high-energy moments coupled with relaxation and rejuvenation. We will be experiencing the onboard entertainment, dining as a group, and other unique events just for us. Of course, there will be plenty of ex-cursions at the amazing ports. Now for best part—this is an affordable cruise, starting at $9100 per couple. 20 cabins are reserved for St. Charles members, and they are all premium “Rock Star” cabins. Virgin has given us an additional incentive, offering us a $300 onboard credit if we achieve 10+ book-ings by November 10. Please contact Karen Kirk with Clandestine Travel, 239-415-3731, to book the 2023 Commodore’s Cruise or feel free to reach out to Gary Ralph and Eileen Pitel, your hosts for the cruise, at 239-287-7583.
