The boy’s basketball team had a fine season, ending the year with an 11-9 record. The team m ight have had a better record if not for some close ballgames. The basketball team also had a first for the school, taking the co-championship in the newly form ed 1-70 League. Coach Jerry Wright was optim istic about the team. “ The team made steady pro gress and im provem ent throughout the season, and if not for a couple of poor games, we could have com pet ed against anyone,” he said. The team had the fou rth best wonlost record for the school and the best record in the last six years.

In the sophom ore tournam ent at Seaman High School, the team lost in the finals to Topeka High. Their tournam ent wins included a forfeit by Shawnee Heights. In the finals, both the Trojans and the Chargers employed a run-and-gun offense, with a hard, hustling full court press. Both teams played in the same fash ion as the varsity, and players looked to the day when they would advance to the improving varsity squad.

With eight returning letterm en, the squad picked up its first 1st place trophy in over three years. In the city and regional the team finished second. With a respectable seventh place showing in the state meet, the wom en’s gymnastics team polished off their final goal of the season. A first place finish in city and a successful season took care of the other goals. First year Coach Cindy Medill took over a young and relatively inexperi enced squad. The team was made up of only two seniors, one junior and six promising sophomores. “ The best com petition in the state com peted and our girls held their ow n," said Coach Medill.

New to West this year has been the addition of the yell leaders. This group of men aided the cheer leaders by helping in form ations, leading student cheers, ringing the bell and assisting in pep assemblies. Leading student cheering at athletic events was just one of the duties of the Topeka West cheerleaders. Be hind the scenes they prom oted spir it, pride and enthusiasm for the school. Organizing and perform ing in school pep assemblies was also a major responsibility of the cheer leaders. The cheerleading squads combined to sell 360 white and purple cowboy hats to wave at the games. Captains this year were Natalie Evanson for the varsity squad, Marty Young for the junior varsity and Chris Pierce headed the yell leaders. “ They are all excellent groups. They work hard and they participate as a unit,’ ’ said Miss Beverly Bernardi, cheerleader sponsor.

JU C lijail 'J OOH3RS9 The precision of the drill team, w it nessed at home football and basket ball games, took tim e and dedica tion. Beginning last summer and continuing through the year, the team practiced diligently in first hour along with additional morning practices. The hard work paid big dividends in pride and enthusiasm. The Westsiders worked under the guidance of Mrs. Susan Affolter, Captain Carol DeSelm and Co-Cap tain Sheri Ball. Popcorn was the big money-maker as the team sold $600 worth to pur chase cowboy hats. “ This is a very dedicated group who thoroughly enjoy working together,” said Mrs. Affolter.
