8 Narrative Text Bahan Ajar Kelas X 3. Folk Legends a. Social Function The word “legend’ is from the Latin legendus or its meaning stems from the Medieval Latin term legenda, meaning “things to be read”. A legend is a traditional history tale popularly regarded as true, but usually containing a mixture of fact and fiction. A legend is also defined as an unverified story handed down from earlier times, esecially one popularly believed to be historical. Although the legend may not be truly accurate, the fact that the person existed is true. That’s why legends are always believed to be true, especially by people who live around the place. Legends resemble folktales in content. They may include supernatural beings, elements of mythology, or explanations of natural phenomena, but they are associated with a particular locality or person and are told as a matter of history. Legends are retold as if they are real events and were believed to be historical accounts. The following are the social functions of legends. ✓ To entertain or amuse the readers. ✓ To teach lesson, like knowing right or wrong. ✓ To present the story of human actions in such a way that they are perceived by the audience to be true. Chracteristics of legends: ✓ A narrative account of a historical figure or place. ✓ Have a specific setting. ✓ Often include beliefs and ideas of a culture and believable miracles. ✓ Stay within the realm of possibility. ✓ Evolve over the time. ✓ Told like factual human history b. They are: ✓ Orientation (who, when and where). ✓ Complication (problem, rising action, and climax – moment of high tension) ✓ Resolution (a solution of a problem) Legends also have similar plot structure: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Problem in a story is also called a crisis or a conflict. In general, there are two kinds of conflict: internal and external conflict. In details there are some types of conflict: ✓ Character vs Self. It is an internal conflict. It may be related to moral or what is right or wrong faced by the character. It may also encompass mental health struggles. ✓ Character vs Character. One character wants are at odds with another character’s. ✓ Character vs Nature. Good codas leave the readers satisfied. A coda or an epilogue adds to the development of the character by telling readers what happened to them after the story has ended. It reiterates the importance of a story. It can be a good way to remind the lesson of the story. Here is given an example of legend with the generic structure c. Language Features Similar to fairy tales, legends have some language features. The following are some additional information related to the language features of legends. ✓ Use past tenses ✓ Use complex sentence ✓ Use adverb of time ✓ Use action verbs When we write a story, especially a legend, we should pay attention to the punctuations and capitalizations. CINDERELLA Once upon a time there was a kind and beautiful girl, whose name was Cinderella. She lived with her cruel stepmother and stepsisters where she was treated as a servant and spent her days finishing all the house chores. One day an invitation to a royal ball arrived. The Prince was looking for a bride and everyone in the kingdom was invited. Cinderella could not go because her step mother and sisters kept asking her to do many things on that day. Left alone, Cinderella began to cry when all of a sudden her Fairy Godmother appeared. “Do not cry my child, you shall go to the ball!” she said. “But I do not have a dress to wear.” cried Cinderella. Her Fairy Godmother waved her magic wand and at once Cinderella’s rags turned into a beautiful new ball gown. Then her Fairy Godmother found six mice playing in the pumpkin patch. She touched them with her magic wand and the pumpkin turned into a beautiful coach and the mice into four white horses and two coachmen. When everything was ready, Cinderella waved goodbye to her fairy godmother who said, “The magic will only last until midnight. You must reach home by then. When she entered the ballroom, the guests were struck by her beauty and her stepmother and stepsisters did not know who she was. The prince asked Cinderella to dance and she was overjoyed. The Prince and Cinderella danced all evening until the clock approaching midnight. “I must go” she told the Prince as she fled from the ballroom. As she ran down the steps of the palace, one of her glass slippers fell off, but Cinderella did not stop to pick it up. She directly went home. The prince had fallen in love with Cinderella the moment he saw her, but he did not even know her name. He picked up her glass slipper from the steps and declared “I will marry the girl whose foot fits this slipper.” The prince and his servants took the glass slipper to every house in the Kingdom, but it did not fit any of the women who tried it on. Cinderella’s stepsisters tried to squeeze their large feet into the dainty shoe, but the servant was afraid it might break. The slipper fit Cinderella’s foot perfectly and the Prince realised this was the beautiful girl he had danced with at the ball. The Prince had found the girl he was looking for. They were married and both lived happily ever after.
