CAROL J. CAPLAN SERVICE AND COMMITMENT AWARDS Each year, BHC honors specific volunteers for the work they have done over time with the congregation. In this way, we also honor all the many volunteers who make BHC buzz in countless areas. This year, we are honoring Julie Simon and the Afghan Refugee Circle Volunteers. Please look below to learn more and to hopefully be inspired towards your own volunteerism. Please join us at the Annual Meeting on April 28 beginning at 5 pm to celebrate these wonderful BHC volunteers.

Julie Simon and the Afghan Refugee Welcome Circle Volunteers Community and Relationship Building. When the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, there were over 75,000 Afghan refugees looking for sanctuary. Agencies across the United States were overwhelmed and struggled to respond quickly. Organizations like HIAS began promoting the idea of community-based welcome circles just as a small group of BHC congregants were trying to figure out how to help. Partnering with HIAS, the Afghan Refugee Welcome Circle was formed and immediately started researching housing, schools, medical care, benefits and halal markets. BHC launched a fundraising campaign to meet the initial goal of $35,000 to get started and found a pro bono attorney willing to assist. In the wee hours of the night on January 27, 2022 two members of the group welcomed an Afghan family at BWI. Despite language and cultural barriers, they made the family feel as comfortable as possible in their new temporary housing. Within the first few weeks, the Welcome Circle helped them find more permanent housing, medical care and other benefits, get registered for school and ESOL (English as a Second Language) and started on all the required legal paperwork. Together with our friends from Bolton Street Synagogue, over 40 additional volunteers worked to welcome this family to their new home. Our caring and generous community donated the items needed to help the family set up their new apartment and volunteer drivers made sure the family got to appointments, grocery stores and English classes. BHC members even shared their professional expertise, providing dental care, eye exams and glasses. While not limited to women, the Welcome Circle brought the energy of a group of Jewish mothers, digging in and getting things done no matter how challenging or unfamiliar the task may have been.

WELCOME CIRCLE

Now the family is thriving. They have secured employment, drivers licenses, bank accounts and even credit-cards and a car. Their English is improving. They recently moved to a new apartment, renting their own U-Haul truck for the move. Over the past year, they have enjoyed a baseball game, blueberry and apple picking, a Fourth of July celebration, as well as a Chanukah celebration and pizza parties with other Afghan refugees. Our community has shared a year of birthdays and other celebrations, including an Havdalah/Iftar in the BHC tent and sharing immigration stories at Sukkot to build friendships and community. This experience has been phenomenal, giving us a chance to put our Jewish value of welcoming the stranger into practice. Volunteers have made and strengthened friendships within the Welcome Circle and our community, as well as with this family and other Afghans. This in our Welcome Circle may not be “resettlement experts,“ but they’ve met the challenge and made a difference.
