Introduction

All we want is to spend time with our children, but the hustle and bustle of everyday life often prevents us from dedicating the necessary time to them. However, the truth is that making time for games and playing them with our students is very important and helps to strengthen our bonds and memories. As well as being able to spend some quality time with our children, we can also let them know what we did yourself as a child. Just teach them some of the old traditional Portuguese games, the ones we all played on the street in the 70's, 80's and 90's, with our friends, family and neighbours. At the end of each game we will realize that, in addition to spending some quality time with our children, we also remember how simple the happiness of our own childhood was. So, we leave you with some suggestions of traditional Portuguese games that you can play with your students.

First game - SIMON SAYS

“Simon Says” Game Objective The game objective is for each player to closely follow the instructions of the leader (Simon).

What is Needed to Play “Simon Says” Nothing is required for this game to be played.

“Simon Says” Game Setup In the “Simon Says” game you need a coordinator or organizer who is able to combine different gestures with spoken phrases. Speed is demanded. Step 1. All participants will form a circle surrounding the leader. Players can either hold hands and form a giant chain or not, depending on their desire. The rules of the game will be clearly stated.

Step 2. The leader will act like the fictional character “Simon”. His role is to give orders as quickly as possible and in a subtle way. He will do that using the phrase “Simon says” ( e.g. “Simon says jump!” ). The players will follow the verbal instruction. If however, the leader doesn’t use the agreed-upon phrase and simply gives the command ( e.g. “Jump!” ), then the players shouldn’t follow suit. Step 3. The task of the players is to be good listeners, carefully point out the flaws in the leader’s commands, and know when to comply and when not to. Step 4. To eliminate players as soon as possible, the leader must issue the commands at a faster pace and in a subtle way. When a player gets confused and makes a move that mirrors Simon’s, even if the leader didn’t say “Simon says”, he is eliminated. The last player standing next to Simon wins the game.

'I packed my school bag'

Second game - 'I packed my school bag’

'I packed my school bag' Game Objective It is a good way to practice vocabulary.

How to Play The first player says the first sentence and adds an item. For example: 'I packed my school bag and I took a ... cake.' The second player repeats and adds another item: 'I packed my school bag and I took a cake and an orange.' The players keep taking turns (repeating and adding items) until someone makes a mistake or forgets a word. You can practice this with several different types of vocabulary. For example: ❑

shopping (I went to the shop and I bought ...)

animals (I went to the zoo and I saw ...)

hobbies (At the weekend I like to ...).

Third game – TIC-TAC-TOE

TIC TAC TOE ' Game Objective A traditional children's game for logical thinking and problem solving!

How to Play Draw the basis of the game: three rows by three columns; In turn, each player places his mark where he wants (one player plays with "0", another player with "X"); The aim of the game is to make a sequence of three identical symbols, either in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line, while trying to prevent your opponent from doing the same; When one of the participants makes a line, he wins the game; Start from the beginning, usually by swapping the chosen symbols. In this version, teams will have to overcome obstacles and answer questions before they

can make their move

Fourth Game- THE 3 CHOPSTICKS GAME This game is very simple, but prepare yourself because it will make you run and take your breath away. With the distance increasing, who will be able to stay in the game?

NUMBER OF PLAYERS : 2 or more RECOMMENDED AGE : 4+ SPACE REQUIREMENTS: flat or dirt floor MATERIALS NEEDED: 3 sticks

How to play: 1) First, look for three sticks. 2) Then, place the sticks horizontally and in a row. Set the distance you want, but don't go too far so you don't start the game on hard mode. 3) The first player is positioned behind the first stick and will have to jump between them. The objective of the game is to pass/jump between the sticks with only one support between each one. The last player marks the increase in distance and moves the last stick to where his foot left off.

4) The second player picks up on the opposite side (where the last player ended up) and repeats the previous step. Don't forget to always increase the distance, according to the last jump you make. 5) Get ready… the distance and difficulty will increase. When a player fails to pass/jump the 3 sticks in this way, he must leave the game. 6) The player who manages to stay in the game the longest will be the winner.
