“ 1844 TO EVERMORE! ”

In 1844 the fledging vineyard was officially established as the Penfolds wine company at Magill Estate.

1870 As the company grew, so too did Dr Penfold’s medical reputation, leaving much of the running of the winery to Mary Penfold.

1920 By Mary's death in 1896, the Penfolds legacy was well on its way to fruition. By 1907, Penfolds had become South Australia's largest winery.

1948 PENFOLDS HISTORY

The success of Penfolds has been driven by the generations of visionaries and innovators. From the beginning in 1844 to today, the merging of science, art and innovation has driven Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected winemakers.

THE MAGIC OF PENFOLDS BEGINS IN THE VINEYARD

The Penfolds winemaking philosophy is unbound by country, vine or time. This endeavour continues with Penfolds venture into California.

The selection of vineyard sites and quality of fruit have always underpinned Penfolds reputation. Over a 175-year history, Penfolds has owned and leased some of the best vineyard sites in Australia, and work with carefully selected growers to stay true to our fruitfirst philosophy of multi-vineyard, multi-regional sourcing. Today, Penfolds vineyards are located primarily across South Australia’s finest wine regions. At the heart is Penfolds Magill Estate. Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the first vines here back in 1844, and even today Magill Vineyard still contributes fruit to Grange when vintage conditions allow.

Blending across vintages is part of Penfolds winemaking philosophy and has been since 1844. Penfolds Tawny styles, famous in the mid-1800’s, continue a long tradition of fortified wines that celebrate this particular blending style. A natural progression was to apply this venerated technique to a create a new Penfolds red style, first with Penfolds g3, Penfolds g4 and finally Penfolds g5.

SPECIAL BIN 111A

A NEW, RARE WINE FROM THE 2016 VINTAGE TO HONOUR 175 YEARS OF INNOVATIVE WINEMAKING. This year Penfolds celebrates 175 years of innovative winemaking. To honour this milestone, we are proud to unveil a new, rare wine from the 2016 vintage - Special Bin 111A Clare Valley Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016. Following in the footsteps of the fabled 1962 Bin 60A, perhaps our most renowned Special Bin, the new release has been awarded a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

TWO GREAT REGIONS Named after the wine’s oak maturation stack number, Special Bin 111A is the first Special Bin blend of Clare Valley and Barossa Valley. Grapes were carefully selected from the Botanic Vineyard in Clare Valley and the Gersch Vineyard in Barossa, South Australia. Botanic Vineyard fruit has been included in five of the last six Grange blends. The Botanic Vineyard lies between Auburn and Leasingham at the southern end of Clare Valley. In 2020, the Gersch Vineyard in North-Western Barossa Valley will commemorate a centenary of supplying grapes to Penfolds. Gersch Vineyard fruit has been included in four of the last ten Grange blends.
